Cold welding for linoleum type "C" most often used when re-laying and restoring old linoleum. It provides a high-quality connection even when it is impossible to fit the strips closely. Permissible gap - 4 mm.

In this type of welding, glue with a thicker consistency is used. This composition forms a "bridge" in the seam between the working surfaces. After the seam dries, excess adhesive is removed. Such welding can also close up small holes and glue gaps.

"T" type welding designed for types of linoleum on a mixed basis (polyester + polyvinyl chloride), as well as for felt-based materials. It forms a transparent highly elastic seam, while providing a reliable connection.

Step-by-step instructions for using cold welding

Correctly gluing linoleum with cold welding is easy. Anyone can do this procedure. The main thing is consistency and accuracy.

In addition to a tube of cold welding, we need tape (paper and double-sided - for fixing linoleum), a rule (a guide along which we will cut linoleum), a piece of plywood and a sharp knife.

The workflow includes eight steps:

Step 1. In order for the joint to be as tight as possible, the linoleum strips must be overlapped with an overlap of 3-5 cm.

Step 2 We cut through the linoleum at the junction through two layers at once. Linoleum is cut with a knife along the rule to make the line even (you can also use a metal square or a wide spatula as a guide). If the floors are concrete, then it is recommended to put a piece of plywood or OSB under the bottom so that the knife blade does not dull on the concrete.

Step 3 After cutting, we remove the extra strips of linoleum, then bend the canvas and glue double-sided tape to the floor for the entire length of the seam. We are filming protective film and tightly press the linoleum to the adhesive tape.

Step 4 We use a plastic roller and smooth out the junction.

Step 5 Before using cold welding, care must be taken to protect the front side of the floor covering. This is done using paper (masking) tape. It is glued along the seam line on both strips, it also needs to be smoothed with a roller.

Step 6 I cut the paper tape along the seam line so that the glue can penetrate into the joint.

Step 7 Now you can start the welding process. Since we have prepared a new tight joint, we use type “A” welding. The tube of cold welding has a special needle-shaped tip that allows the glue to penetrate into the seam. With one hand we press the needle deep into the seam and lead along the incision, and with the other we press on the tube, dosing the supply of the composition. The glue should protrude slightly on the surface of the paper tape, this indicates that the seam is sufficiently filled with adhesive.

Step 8 The polymerization process begins immediately after applying cold welding to linoleum. After about 10 minutes, remove the paper tape. It is easily removed and does not tear if you maintain a sharp angle. Subject to technology, the docking point will be almost invisible.

Linoleum is considered to be the most popular floor covering. An impressive variety of colors and sizes, practicality and quite budgetary cost of this material make it indispensable for finishing private apartments and public spaces. To lay the coating at home, it is not necessary to be a specialist. It is enough just to do the job carefully and know how to glue linoleum so that the joints are strong and inconspicuous. The use of hot or cold welding will provide a reliable and beautiful connection between the material webs.

When is it necessary to glue linoleum?

Linoleum is a finishing material made from natural or polymer fibers. Laying such a floor covering is not difficult if you only know how to glue linoleum end-to-end at home.

The fact is that this finishing material goes on sale in the form of rolls 2 or 5 meters wide. There are no other options. If the room in which the renovation is planned has small area and you can cover the entire floor with a single piece, there are no difficulties.

But much more often the rooms are the same correct form or the width of the room is more than 5 meters. In such cases, it is necessary to cut out and lay several pieces of linoleum, which then need to be securely and imperceptibly fastened together. If this work is carried out poorly, water will penetrate into the joints, dirt will clog and after a while the edges of the canvases will bend and twist.

Linoleum has to be glued in doorways and when replacing a damaged piece with new material. If the flooring has a pronounced pattern or the designers decided to decorate the floors with a colorful application, it is also impossible to do without gluing the joints.

How can you connect linoleum at the joints?

To connect two or more pieces of linoleum into one whole, you can use the following methods.

Attaching double sided tape. This option is more suitable for creating a temporary hitch, and its main advantage is the speed of the work. The resulting seam will soon disperse, debris and dust will fall into it.
Installation of aluminum or plastic nut. A good way to create a quality connection, but it is only appropriate to use it in doorways.
Hot welding. Gluing parts of linoleum by hot welding is used when laying industrial flooring in public spaces. This method requires professional equipment and skills, so it is not suitable for connecting household coatings at home.
Cold welding. To connect the canvases and create an airtight seam, a special glue called cold welding is used.

In everyday life, they mainly use the last method of gluing linoleum.

Hot welding method

Hot welding is most often used when laying industrial linoleum, which differs from household finishing material thickness, strength, wear resistance. Such flooring is laid in schools and hospitals, offices and industrial premises, that is, where there is an intense mechanical impact on the floors.

To get a high-quality and aesthetic seam, before gluing the linoleum together, it is necessary to glue the PVC coating to the floor. Sealing of joints can be started no earlier than one day after gluing.

For gluing ordinary linoleum, hot welding is almost never used. The fact is that the usual coating has a small thickness and does not withstand the temperatures that are used for joining by heating. In addition, for hot welding, it is necessary to have professional equipment and certain skills.

For docking by hot welding, it is necessary the following materials and fixtures:

special gun-hair dryer;
cord made of linoleum;
sharp knife or flat chisel.

To create a strong and reliable seam, you must perform the following steps.

Along the entire length of the joint (the canvases must be laid with a minimum gap and tightly glued to the base), a groove is cut out with a chisel, into which the cord will be placed in the future.
The docking site is cleaned of dust with a vacuum cleaner.
The linoleum cord is tucked into the clip of the welding gun, which is connected to the network. A connecting cord can be purchased with the floor covering.
Under the action of air heated to 400 ° C, the edges of the linoleum, together with the cord, are melted and connected. The result is a strong and almost invisible seam.
The part of the cord that rises above the joint can be cut off with a sharp knife.

At first glance, the hot welding procedure seems very simple, but in fact it is not. When performing such work, professional skills are required, in addition, high-temperature welding poses a danger to the life and health of an inexperienced repairman.

Features of cold welding

For gluing the coating at home, reaction adhesives are used, which are otherwise called "cold welding". They contain polyurethane and epoxy resin, have a very corrosive odor and are highly flammable.

The reaction adhesive enters into chemical reaction with polyvinyl chloride, from which the floor covering is made. The edges of the joints soften and dissolve into each other, resulting in a thin but strong seam, appearance reminiscent of real welding. This adhesive is especially relevant when laying a foam-based coating, since hot welding not recommended for such materials.

Cold welding is sold in tubes equipped with a special needle nozzle, with which the adhesive enters the most hard-to-reach places and allows you to firmly glue the joints of linoleum.

Cold welding has many advantages.

Any novice master can handle the work of laying flooring using cold welding, since the method does not require skills and abilities.
Ideal not only for laying new linoleum, but also for repairing old flooring.
No special equipment is required, which significantly reduces the cost of finishing work.
The seam obtained by cold welding is characterized by solidity, accuracy and strength.

Gluing the joints of the flooring by cold welding does not require physical effort.

Types of glue

There are several types of adhesive used as cold welding. The choice of a suitable adhesive depends on the composition and type of finishing material, as well as on the nature of the work being carried out.

Type A

When laying new linoleum, type A cold welding glue is used. Due to the high solvent content, this adhesive has the most liquid consistency compared to other similar compositions, so it is advisable to use it to create joints no more than 2 mm wide. The main advantage of A-type glue is that the resulting seam is almost invisible and at the same time incredibly strong. Glue is best suited for hard linoleum with perfectly smooth edges.

Type C

This adhesive composition has a fairly dense consistency and is used for sealing joints 3–4 mm wide. Type C glue is used to glue the sheets of the old coating that have moved away from each other. Cold welding of type C not only glues the sheets together, but also fills the gap, as if creating an intermediate strip of linoleum.

Type T

This type of adhesive is rarely used by amateurs. However, professionals use it to connect PVC and polyester fabrics.

How to seal linoleum with cold welding?

The technology of joining the floor covering with the use of cold welding does not present any particular difficulties. The main thing is to carefully follow the instructions and carefully perform the work at each stage. Before you glue linoleum end-to-end at home, you need to prepare type A glue, adhesive tape, a knife, gloves.

Do not allow drops of glue to fall on the surface of the coating.

In order not to stain the linoleum with glue and not to plant a blot, which will be very difficult to remove, you must always use a soft cloth. When opening and closing a tube of glue, you need to hold it over this rag, protecting the floor from falling drops. If, nevertheless, a drop of glue remains on the linoleum, it is better to wait until it is completely dry and remove the dry film with a knife.

Work on gluing joints should be carried out with gloves and with open windows, as the glue has a pungent unpleasant odor.

Before sealing the joints, the first step is to prepare them for joining - blot moisture with a rag, remove dust and debris accumulated in the cracks with a vacuum cleaner.
The place of the future joint is protected with masking tape. This is necessary in order to protect the edges of the canvases from getting glue.
With a sharp knife, the adhesive tape is cut directly above the joint.
A needle nozzle is put on a tube of glue and the composition is squeezed into the gap between the canvases. Glue must be squeezed out so much that it protrudes 4 mm above the surface of the material.
Remove the tape after 15-20 minutes.
You can use the finished floor covering after an hour after the end of the work.

A perfectly flat floor is extremely rare. There will always be small bulges and depressions. If you make one long seam, then in uneven places it will bristle. Therefore, experts advise gluing joints in small segments up to 70 cm long. new site follows only after the previous one has dried. If you follow this technology, the seam will turn out to be more even and invisible.

When repairing linoleum, a thicker type C glue is used, so sticking tape is not necessary. Otherwise, the process of joining the canvases completely repeats the steps described above.
