How carpet is laid. How to lay carpet: methods and recommendations of professionals. Option # 2 - fixing on double-sided tape

There is nothing difficult in the process of carpet flooring. Consider in detail how to lay carpet with your own hands. You can easily cope with this work, you just need to follow some laying rules.

Conditions for the correct installation of carpet

 • Work should be carried out in a room where the humidity does not exceed 70%, and the temperature is from +16 degrees.
 • The floor surface must be clean, dry and level. Also, if the room performed repair work, they must be completed.
 • If the roll of carpet was brought into the room from the cold, then it should be kept for a day at room temperature.

You will need tools to install carpet. The set is small and it is better to have everything at hand in order to do all the work efficiently. Listed below are tools for all types of flooring, some of them may not be needed, depending on how you lay the flooring.

Carpet laying tools

Metal ruler. Needed for a straight cut.

Carpet knife. An indispensable tool, needed for cutting the coating into strips, for cutting off excess material, etc.

Roller or brush-brush. Required for applying adhesive to the floor surface. For thick glue, a notched trowel is suitable.
Scraper or regular spatula. Needed to remove excess or remnants of old glue.

Stretcher - a special tool that pulls the edges of the material on the gripper rails.
Other tools may be needed.

Carpet flooring materials

 1. Naturally, the carpet itself (read more about the material).
 2. Substrate. We talked about it on the page.
 3. Grip rail. Mounted around the perimeter of the room, the carpet is pulled over it.
 4. Glue for carpets. ( detailed information About,)

Methods for laying carpet on the floor

There are four ways to lay the carpet: with adhesive tape, with glue, using stretching technology and by fixing around the perimeter with skirting boards. Consider each styling method in more detail.

On tape

This type of carpeting is perfect for small spaces, where you can put the coating in one whole piece.

 1. Prepare the floor surface: remove debris, dust, dirt, old adhesive residue, etc. In general, the floor should be such that double-sided tape adheres well to it.
 2. Customize carpet covering according to the size of the room, cut off the excess. Roll up and remove material.
 3. Now you need to stick adhesive tape, this is done with a grid with a side length of a square of 50 cm. Also, strips are glued around the perimeter of the room.
 4. Carefully roll out the roll and glue it to the adhesive tape.

Important! Make sure that the floor surface is absolutely dry and the air in the room has a humidity of no higher than 70%. Otherwise, the tape may deform or even peel off before you lay the material on it.

Roll out the roll and stick it to the adhesive tape

Almost anyone can cover the floor with carpet in this way. Of course, it is better if the laying work is done by two people.

Free flooring (fixation around the perimeter with skirting boards)

Perhaps this is the easiest way to cover the floor with carpet.

 1. We roll out the coating around the room and leave 10 cm along the edges with a call to the wall.
 2. With a tamping roller (or a regular one), we pass from the center to the edges, so we will expel all the air and get rid of waves and swelling.
 3. We cut off everything superfluous.
 4. We install skirting boards, sills, etc.

This method is good because you can do the work yourself, saving on specialists. It is also not necessary to carefully prepare the floor surface, as, for example, with the adhesive method of laying.

There are also disadvantages: over time, bubbles and bumps may appear due to the fact that the coating is weakly fixed (skirting boards do not press the material tightly enough to the floor). In addition, it is not recommended to move furniture along the carpet and wash it with a washing vacuum cleaner.

On glue

Be sure to read our article: It will help you choose this consumable.

Despite the complexity, this method of flooring is the most popular. There are many reasons for this:

 • reliable fixation of the coating;
 • minimal risk of waves and bubbles;
 • the possibility of care with a washing vacuum cleaner;
 • suitable for large areas.

It is necessary to approach the laying of carpet on glue as responsibly as possible and follow all the recommendations, since the used material cannot be laid a second time.

Do-it-yourself carpet flooring in an adhesive way, step by step instructions:

 1. Carefully prepare the surface.
 2. We roll the roll around the room, while leaving 6-10 cm overlap on the walls around the perimeter.
 3. Let the coating rest for a day. Then we cut off all the excess.
 4. Now we fold one half on the other to the center of the room. We coat the freed area of the floor surface with glue.
 5. We glue the coating, pressing it well and smoothing it in different directions from the center with a roller.
 6. Fix the other half in the same way. When the coating is completely laid, we level it again, cut off the excess, mount skirting boards, sills, etc.

The surface of the floor can be covered with glue both completely and partially (mesh with squares 50 by 50 cm.)

The adhesive installation method is great for carpeting on concrete or wood floors. It is better to lay a coating on a laminate or linoleum with adhesive tape or with fixation with skirting boards.

Stretching (tension on special rails)

A method in which the edges of the carpet are attached to special gripper rails. What are the advantages? The floor does not need careful processing, as is the case with adhesive flooring. It is also worth noting reliable fixation, the absence of waves, bubbles, irregularities. In addition, the service life of the coating is extended.

There are also disadvantages, this is a complicated laying process (special tools are needed) and the need to purchase a substrate.

It is advisable to lay a substrate under the coating laid by the stretching method - it will increase softness and increase heat and sound insulation.

How to cover the floor with carpet using stretching technology

 1. Along the walls around the perimeter, special wooden gripper-slats are nailed to the floor, into which carnations are driven in two rows at an angle of 45 degrees. You can mount the rails on dowel-nails if the floor is concrete, or on self-tapping screws if the floor is wooden.
 2. We roll out the substrate, leaving an overlap on the walls. Trim off excess after complete installation.
 3. We do the same with carpet.
 4. After that, we stretch the edges of the carpet onto these rails using a special tool.

After laying the carpet, cut off the excess

If you decide to lay the carpet with your own hands, then do not miss our tips:

 • Measure the floor area as accurately as possible and buy material with a margin.
 • Carpeting always starts at the corner of the room.
 • To trim excess carpet, a level or even bar is useful.
 • Excess material, start cutting from the center.
 • If holes were made in the coating (for pipes, for example), then their edges must be carefully fixed with transparent tape.

What is the best way to install carpet?

Our answer is glue. Why? It's simple:

 • you will be able to move furniture freely on the floor without fear that waves and irregularities will appear;
 • increase the service life of the coating;
 • the original appearance will remain longer;
 • you will be sure of reliable fixing of the carpet.

A bare floor, even a very beautiful one, is not to everyone's liking. If the floor is laid with the cheapest materials without any decorative qualities, then it will be very nice to cover it with carpet. Do-it-yourself carpet laying is a simple matter, except for stretch laying. But first, let's talk about the requirements for the room under the carpet and preparing the floor for it.

Where is the best place to lay carpet?

It is definitely impossible to lay carpet where the temperature and humidity for one day and for more than three days go beyond sanitary norms: temperature from +18 to +27; humidity up to 75%. Also, if the microclimate parameters change within the normal range, but abruptly, within an hour or two, the carpet will also crawl.

But in a room where during the year the temperature changes from +16 in winter to outdoor in summer, the carpet will lie well: its material will have time to adapt to changes in the microclimate. A residential balcony can be covered with carpet either loosely laid (the floor area is too small for the flooring to go astray) or stretched.

But in rooms with a warm floor, it is impossible to lay carpet in any case. Firstly, the warm floor itself will cease to fulfill its function from this: naturally, there will be no convection of heated air through the coating; heat radiation as well. Secondly, the temperature gradient (difference) across the thickness of the coating will turn out to be such that it will definitely crawl.

How much carpet do you need

With any installation method, seams should be avoided. It's not so much about aesthetics. Due to temperature deformations, pieces of material will either crawl on top of each other, or a gap will form between them, and the edges will become ragged. Therefore, the carpet must be bought in one piece according to the size of the room with a margin of 30-40 cm on each side.

Floor and coating preparation

Carpet flooring will only lie well on a flat, smooth floor. Therefore, before laying, you need to check the floor for evenness and horizontality with a level and an even rail along the width of the room. The deviation within the room should not exceed 4-5 mm, otherwise the flooring will crawl with any method of fastening. If the deviation exceeds the specified value, the floor must be leveled with a leveler for the appropriate purpose: for stone or wood. On the wooden floor, you first need to walk cycles.

To check the horizontal level with a bubble level, it must be calibrated. This is done as follows: set the level on a horizontal surface. Then, a match is slipped under one end of it and slowly moved to the middle, holding the other end with your fingers until the lateral risk is in the middle of the bubble. Then, with a caliper or ruler, measure the distance from the hanging end of the level to the surface, and the calculation is carried out according to the rules of trigonometry for small angles.

For example: level 1 m long. The rise of its end during graduation is 2 mm. When setting the level to the center of the room 5 m long along the room, the bubble went a quarter beyond the risk. Then the deviation from the horizontal at the length of the level of 1 m is 1 mm, and at 5 meters of the length of the room - 5 mm. It's on the edge; carpet will need to be well strengthened throughout the area.

Preparation of carpet for installation is reduced to keeping it in the room intended for this for at least three days. thick roll heat-insulating material in the mass should warm up to room temperature, and the air between the villi should acquire its humidity.

Tools

For carpeting, you will need special tools: a knife and a roller. A carpet knife no longer looks like a knife, but like a hand sewing machine: this is a fairly solid unit in the form of an angle with a handle. The handle is pulled, pressing against the coating, and the cut off strip comes out on the side.

There are also light roller blades for carpeting. It is not recommended for beginners to use them: in inept hands, such a knife will inevitably splash sideways, and the whole piece will be spoiled. The same thing will happen if you cut the carpet with an ordinary mounting knife.

The roller for rolling out the carpet is similar to the paint roller, but wider and with a fairly hard coating of the roller. It is impossible to roll out the carpet with a paint roller: the particles of the roller coating will be packed into the pile, and there will be stripes that cannot be got rid of.

These tools are not cheap, and are unsuitable for any other purpose. How to be here? Very simple: rent.

True professionals of the "carpet" business often use knee pads for work, but for one time they, in principle, will not be needed.

How to make carpet joints

Imagine: you found a suitable piece of carpet for sale in the remnants, that is, inexpensively. But for the living room it is too big, but the seller does not want to cut it - there will be quite a lump left. But this remainder in terms of area, if cut into strips, will be enough for the hallway, where it will be necessary to change the coating often. Or you, in spite of everything, want to cover the apartment with multi-colored stripes. In any case, you need to know how to make carpet joints.

The joints on the carpet are made as follows: two pieces are laid with an overlap of at least 4 cm. Then two layers are cut along the joint line at once, to the floor, the ends are bent, the cut inner strip is removed, and released. There was a small tear - they bend it, release it in that place or roll it with a roller. Everything, the joint is ready.

For joints of carpet with other floor coverings, ordinary metal profiles-thresholds are suitable. Moreover, in most cases, the joint will fall on the doorway, where the threshold will come in handy.

Carpet installation methods

There are five ways to lay carpet:

 • Free styling.
 • Laying with fixation around the perimeter.
 • Attached with double sided tape.
 • Adhesive laying.
 • Stretch laying (stretch laying).

We will consider them in order of applicability to certain rooms and / or floors.

Loose styling

Laying loose carpet means simply laying the carpet on the floor like a carpet or rug. It is advisable to do this on a balcony, in a closet adapted for a dressing room or in another narrow room without movable furniture. But if a home workshop is equipped in the closet, the carpet is useless there: you can’t catch the dropped small details from the pile, but then they will definitely, according to the law of meanness, dig into the leg.

With free laying, a suitable piece is laid on the floor with a trough, V-shaped cuts at 90 degrees are made in the corners with scissors, and then cut around the perimeter. This is perhaps the only case when a light roller cutter for carpet can be recommended to an amateur master: the cut is carried out by pressing the cutting roller into a corner. That's all.

Laying with fixation around the perimeter

For laying with fixation around the perimeter, the skirting boards are first removed. The desired piece of coating is laid in the same way as with free laying, with a trough with a twist on the walls. Now the rays, from the center to the edge, smooth the coating with a roller. Then they are cut off, but the edges are left wrapped on the wall by 30-40 mm. Then the edges are folded under the bottom until the fold line coincides with the wall, and skirting boards are installed on self-tapping screws or mounting nails. The holes for the fastener heads in the baseboards close up liquid nails in the tone of the plinth.

This method is very simple and economical, but it is only suitable for rooms with ideal temperature and humidity conditions, a completely flat floor and non-movable furniture. A chair on rollers, even special for carpets, double and wide, sooner or later will bring down the coating. Option - if you need to somehow cover up a very unsightly floor before repair.

Tape fixation

For this fixation, double-sided tape is used. For 8 sq. m of the covered area will need 10 m of adhesive tape, regardless of its width. The width of the adhesive tape for carpet is from 63 to 180 mm. Adhesive tape 63 mm wide lasts 2-3 years; 180 mm - 5-7 years.

First, adhesive tape is glued around the perimeter along the walls and from the center with divergent rays, REMOVING THE PROTECTIVE TAPE ON ONE SIDE. The side of the tape facing up should be closed for now.

Carpet on such a "crate" of adhesive tape is laid, leveled and cut, as described above. Then half of the cover is wrapped on the remaining half inside out. Remove the protective tapes from the glued strips of adhesive tape and carefully roll the carpet onto the "crate". The same procedure is done with the other half.

Carpet on adhesive tape lies well on uneven floor as long as it is clean before installation. On such a coating, you can ride in a chair on carpet rollers and even drag dinner table. If it is planned to quickly or frequently replace the carpet, then laying on adhesive tape is the only acceptable option. But this work requires accuracy and certain skills: after the carpet lies on the adhesive tape, it will not be possible to smooth out the wrinkles. Therefore, when self-laying on adhesive tape, a beginner must first practice rolling out the coating simply on the floor, without adhesive tape.

With laying carpet on adhesive tape, everything is simple: mentally divide the room into squares and carefully glue the adhesive tape. The wider and better - the longer it will last.

Adhesive laying

There are two technologies for laying carpet on glue: with single and double gluing. Single sizing is applied on flat floors; double - on hilly and / or inclined at the limit.

When gluing, the role of strips of adhesive tape is performed by strips of special glue for carpet, which are also applied with a special notched trowel. The type of spatula recommended for this adhesive is indicated on its packaging. Glue from reputable manufacturers is sold complete with a spatula.

For adhesive laying carpet is laid on a clean, dry floor, as for other laying methods, and cut as for loose laying, without hem. Then half is wrapped, as when laying on adhesive tape, and glue is applied to the floor in the same way as tape strips: along the perimeter and with rays from the center to the edges. Lay the unfolded half, unscrew the other, and repeat the procedure. After that, the coating is leveled with a roller. You need to work quickly before the glue begins to set.

With double gluing, first a felt pillow or a special carpet underlay is glued to the floor, and then the actual coating is already on it.

Carpeting on glue is laid once and for all. The carpet torn off during replacement is no longer suitable for use, and traces of glue must be removed from the floor. True, there are adhesives for carpet, which after a certain time lose their properties, like adhesive tape, but they cost no less than adhesive tape. However, there is a certain sense in their use: wrinkles and bubbles can be smoothed out with glue that has not yet set.

Tension laying

And how to lay the carpet both forever and on an uneven floor, and so that it can be removed and then put again? So the carpet is laid in a stretch way, or with tension. Such laying is done with the help of special mounting elements - grippers.

Gripper - a thin bar with spikes sticking out of it at 45 degrees. On opposite sides of the gripper, the points are directed oppositely, i.e. along the same axis. The carpet must be designed for laying with grippers, and grippers must be suitable for this brand of carpet. For flooring, first choose a "gripper" carpet, and according to the specification for it - grippers of the appropriate type.

The floor in an apartment or room, even if it is of high quality, but does not have any decorative coating- Not everyone likes it. Therefore, I will tell you how to lay the carpet so that it is warm and comfortable.

Installing carpet is not difficult. Here the whole complexity lies in the stretch styling. But let's talk about the rooms where it is best to lay carpet and the requirements for them.

Where can carpet be laid?

I want to note that it is not recommended to lay carpet where there is humidity and air temperature during one day ranges from 18 degrees to 27 degrees Celsius. Even if the room temperature changes according to acceptable limits norms, but sharply enough, then the carpet can change its structure and “crawl”.

The apartment has the most favorable conditions for laying carpet, here it will lie well, and the deformation of the material will occur with a minimum error. The balcony can also be covered with carpet, since the area covered will be small for significant changes and the carpet can be fixed both on stretch and on the principle of free flooring.

In rooms where there is a warm floor, laying carpet is prohibited under any conditions. Because the warm floor will lose its direct purpose, since the heated air and heat radiation will not pass through the carpet. Secondly, temperature fluctuations will lead to deformation of the carpet.

How to calculate the amount of carpet needed

Using different technologies when laying carpet, you need to avoid seams, because when the temperature changes in the room, pieces of carpet can crawl on top of each other or, on the contrary, form a gap, in which the edges become ragged, and your carpet will look ugly.

We always buy carpet in a single piece for the size of the room, leaving a margin of 10 - 15 centimeters.

Cooking the floor

Carpet will look great only on a smooth and even floor. Before proceeding with the flooring, check the floor with a level and a level rail for unevenness and horizontality. The flooring of the base should not deviate from the norm by 5 - 7 millimeters.

If the curvature of the base for the carpet exceeds these figures, then this must be corrected. You also need to walk on the floor surface of the cycles.

Before laying, the carpet must be kept indoors for at least a day in order for it to acclimatize. If the carpet roll is thick, then it should warm up to room temperature, therefore, it is necessary to withstand the carpet in the room for more than one day.

Tools

When laying carpet, some special tools are needed, such as a roller and a knife. It looks like a corner with a handle. We pull the handle, pressing the knife against the carpet, and the cut off strip will come out on the side. Roller knives have also been developed, but I do not advise a beginner to use them, since with any inept movement it will surely slide to the side, and you will cut off an extra piece. I also do not recommend that you use a regular knife on the same principle.

A carpet roller is somewhat similar to a paint roller, but it is much wider and has a hard coating on the roller. I do not advise using a paint roller for carpet, as the coating of the roller will be packed into the pile and it will not be very easy to remove it. Of course, there is a minus that all carpet tools are expensive, but the best option is to rent them.

Carpet joint work

There are times when you want to cover the floor from different pieces of carpet, or the store has a piece that is a bit too big, and the seller refuses to cut it, so you can cover the remaining piece, for example, in the hallway. In this case, you need to know how to properly make joints so that they look beautiful and aesthetically pleasing.

We lay two pieces of carpet with a slight overlap of 3 - 4 centimeters. At the junction line, we cut two layers to the floor and bend the ends. We remove the inner strip of carpet and release the edges.

It turns out a small badass, which we bend and roll tightly to the floor with a roller. This completes the steps to form the joint of the carpet. If it is necessary to make the joints of the carpet with other floor coverings, then you can use metallic profile. Since the joints will mainly fall on doorways and.

Five ways to install carpet

 • Free laying carpet is the most common way.
 • Carpet flooring with fixation around the perimeters.
 • Fixing the carpet with double-sided tape.
 • Laying carpet on an adhesive basis.
 • Tensioned or stretch carpet installation.

Loose styling

Loosely lay the carpet on the prepared base - it resembles the flooring of an ordinary rug or carpet. This method is suitable for those rooms where you will not move furniture in the future. This is a closet, balcony or other narrow dressing room. When using the method of free laying carpet, we lay it on the floor with curved edges along the perimeter of the walls. Pressing the carpet into a corner, we make cuts along the perimeter of the room, keep in mind that it is necessary to leave about a centimeter from the edge of the walls in case of deformation.

With fixation around the perimeter

Before laying carpet with fixation around the perimeter of the room, remove the existing skirting boards. We start as described with the free laying method - we lay the carpet on the floor with curved edges on the walls, cutting the corners, bending the edges under them and rolling with a roller for sealing and twisting the baseboard with screws. This method is simple and economical, and is only suitable for rooms where the temperature and permissible humidity are ideal, where the floor is flat, for example, in an apartment.

Video. How to lay carpet under the baseboard

Tape fixing carpet

For this installation method, we use, of course, double-sided tape. If the room is eight meters square, then you will need about eleven meters of tape. Tape width varies. The wider the tape, the longer it will last you.

We stick double-sided tape around the perimeter of the room. We start laying the carpet from the wall of the room. We remove the protective tape from the adhesive tape and fasten the carpet near the wall. The carpet must be prepared in advance and cut around the perimeter of the walls.

Having fixed one side, we start from the corner to gradually peel off the protective strip from the adhesive tape and gradually fix the carpet, smoothing it from the center with a roller. And so we gradually move towards the opposite wall. I want to note that I do not recommend removing the protective tape from the adhesive tape in advance, as dust, dirt, and other elements construction debris, upon contact with adhesive tape, significantly reduce its effectiveness.

You can also lay the carpet on adhesive tape, which is glued throughout the room, as shown in the picture. In this case, the laying must start from the corner, while the carpet must be prepared and twisted diagonally across the room. It is necessary to unwind on adhesive tape gradually, pressing with a roller. Make sure that wrinkles do not form, since it is not possible to remove them later.

Laying the carpet on the adhesive base

Two ways of laying carpet on an adhesive base have been developed: single or double gluing. Single gluing, most often used if there are even floors in the room. Double gluing is used when the floor is sloping or uneven.

The principle of laying carpet with these methods resembles laying on adhesive tape. Lay the adhesive on the floor with a notched trowel. We lay the carpet on the floor and cut it around the perimeter. I want to note that before applying the adhesive, the floor must be clean and dry.

 • Next, we wrap half of the carpet on the other half and apply glue to the base according to the principle of sticking double-sided tape.
 • Carefully, we lay half of the carpet on top, while smoothing it with a roller.
 • After we turn off the second half and do the same. We do everything quickly enough, as the glue sets and dries quickly.
 • Bye adhesive base not yet dry, you will have the opportunity to smooth out wrinkles and bubbles with a roller.

Double gluing involves first gluing a felt pillow on the base of the floor, and only then glue the carpet on the pillow. I want to note that with the adhesive method of laying the carpet, you will not be able to re-lay another coating, since you will need to change the base of the floor. You come across cheap glue, which after a while will lose its adhesive properties and it costs much more than adhesive tape. Therefore, whether to choose this method of laying carpet is up to you.

Video. Laying carpet with glue

Installing tensioned carpet

If you are a lover of change and a creative person, and want to lay carpet on an uneven floor, and after a while remove and lay a new coating, then the stretch method is designed just for you. For stretch carpet installation, you will need grippers. This is a thin bar on which there are spikes at an angle of 45 degrees. Carpet must be purchased special, which is designed for this method styling, as well as grippers corresponding to the carpet.

Before laying, lay out the grippers around the entire perimeter of the walls, at a certain distance from the walls. When buying grippers - the distance is indicated on the package. The top points should look at the walls, and the bottom ones should rest on the floor from the walls. The base of the floor should only be wooden or linoleum.
We cut the laid carpet along the outer edge on the gripper and push the grippers through the carpet to the walls with a specially adapted tool. In this case, the upper tips of the gripper will hold the coating, and the lower ones will crash into the floor. This prevents the stretched carpet from moving back. We finish laying by installing wide metal skirting boards, which have a large hollow inside. These plinths will cover the mounds of the coating around the perimeter.

There are cases when it is advisable to use a felt backing. Usually, if it is necessary, then this is indicated in the instructions on the packaging of the carpet or grippers.

I think that you have made sure that when laying carpet different ways there are many subtleties. But at the same time, all methods, except for stretch styling, are quite accessible to an ordinary home builder!

Carpet is a fairly popular material that is used for finishing gender. It is pleasant, warm and, of course, is able to create coziness in the house, and it is also easy to care for. Therefore, many owners of apartments and houses appreciate it. In laying the carpet is also simple, but still there are a number of nuances that must be taken into account during the installation of the coating. How to lay carpet? Let's figure it out together.

Carpet - a cozy solution for your home

Carpet in its structure resembles ordinary carpets, but in general it has nothing to do with them. This versatile, durable, easy-to-clean flooring covers subfloors completely, while a regular carpet only covers a portion of the floor, with a regular topcoat underneath.

Do not think that the carpet is boring and monotonous - this is far from the case. All sorts of variations of coatings are now being produced - with long and short pile, soft and fairly dense.

On a note! Carpet can be installed in any room where it will not come into excessive contact with water. He is not afraid of temperature changes, and therefore can lie even in unheated rooms.

Carpet - operation and maintenance

Laying can be done on any type of base - the material feels great on a concrete or wooden floor, on plywood or gypsum fiber flooring, etc. Carpet is suitable for laying both in an office and in a residential building, its features help it not to lose popularity and often used for interior decoration.

 1. The material is characterized by increased thermal insulation, it retains heat well in the house.
 2. Carpet has soundproof properties. And the larger the pile, the quieter the steps while moving on this type of coating.
 3. The coverage is high fire safety, since during production it is processed with special compounds.
 4. Carpet absorbs dust, does not allow it to soar in the air. The smallest particles settle in its pile.
 5. The material is easy to clean - sometimes, to remove dirt, just use a vacuum cleaner.
 6. Carpets come in a wide variety of textures and colors.
 7. Installation of the material is very simple and can be done by anyone who is at least a little "friends" with the tools.
 8. Carpet provides warmth and comfort in the house.

Features and nuances of the material

Carpet is very durable, but in many ways, its life will depend on the correct installation and careful care of it. And the main disadvantage of carpet is that bright colors are used in the manufacture. chemical dyes, which in certain situations can cause allergies in residents of the house. Therefore, the material is not recommended for use in an apartment where people who are sensitive to the condition live. environment people. However, do not forget that the carpet itself is a good dust accumulator, and the resulting allergy may not be caused by dyes, but by these smallest particles of litter. With regular cleaning of the coating, there should be no allergies.

They say that the carpet is able to release substances that negatively affect the human body into the air. And here it is worth thinking, first of all, about what the material is made of. If it is made of pure wool, then you should not be afraid of inhaling toxic substances. And if the material is synthetic, then it is worth remembering that the same linoleum or laminate has in its composition much more toxic adhesives and substances than the same carpet.

Conditions for choosing a carpet

Pledge successful completion repair and beauty in the house, as well as achieving the desired result is right choice finishing materials. And this rule also applies to carpet. It must be selected taking into account all the features of the operation of the material. For example, you should not choose a floor with a long pile in an apartment where pets live. It will be difficult to clean it from wool.

Also, when choosing a material, the patency of the room is also taken into account. For example, long pile material is also not laid in the corridor or kitchen. It is best placed in the living room or bedroom.

On a note! Now carpet is produced with a variety of piles - with looped, split. And looped, in turn, is subdivided into two more types - one- and two-level. The length of the pile can vary from 5 to 40 mm.

Also, the material varies depending on the materials used to create it. Basically, it is made of synthetics.

Table. What is carpet made from?

Materiala brief description of

The most wear-resistant type of carpet. Service life can reach 15 years with correct operation. The material is very easy to clean.

Acrylic fiber carpet resembles wool in its structure, but does not have high elasticity. The pile is quite hard.

The only one natural material which can be used to make carpet. It is soft, elastic, environmentally friendly and does not electrify. The color saturation and structure are preserved for a long time, but such a carpet is more expensive than other types.

Another important aspect when buying carpet - the purchase of material in sufficient quantities. That is, before going to the store, it is worth calculating the area of the room and purchasing coverage in accordance with the measurements taken.

Attention! Carpeting is always bought with a margin necessary to fit the material during installation. The margin is equal to 10% of the total required coverage area.

Carpet installation methods

The service life of the material largely depends on the correctness of its installation. There are the following ways to lay carpet:

 • with glue;
 • double-sided tape;
 • free installation with fixing around the perimeter;
 • stretching.

With double sided tape carpet can be quickly fixed on a rough base without extra costs. The method allows, if necessary, quite simply to dismantle the coating. In this case, the carpet is attached to strips of double-sided adhesive tape, glued to the subfloor with a grid in increments of about 50-100 cm. The protective tape does not peel off. The carpet is laid rolled up in a roll at the far end of the room, fixed to the adhesive tape there, and then, rolling out, is glued over the entire floor area. But it is better to glue the material from the middle of the room.

Attaching carpet with glueperfect option for concrete or wood bases. In this case, you will need to use special adhesives that will be applied with a notched trowel to the rough base. The carpet is rolled out on the floor, then one side of it is thrown over the other (approximately in the middle of the panel). The vacant floor space is smeared with glue, on which the material is mounted, gradually unfolding. The other side is glued in the same way.

On a note! In the case of using glue to fix the carpet, it is important to properly join the individual sheets. To do this, they overlap each other by 5-7 cm to make a perfect joint. Further, the edges are well smeared with glue and rolled with a roller. Only in this case, the junction of the individual canvases will be invisible.

Method "stretching" will require the purchase of special equipment - the so-called stretcher. No adhesive components or materials are used here. You will also have to purchase gripper rails, which will be installed around the perimeter of the room, and the carpet will be attached to them. The material in this case is simply stretched and fixed.

Sometimes the carpet is laid without fixing at all, or rather, it will be held only by the skirting boards. But this option will be minimally reliable, it is not recommended to move furniture on the floor - the carpet will simply fold into folds. In rooms where high traffic is noted, this method is never used. Also, do not neglect the fixing of the carpet and in spacious rooms. But if necessary, the coating is easy to dismantle - just unscrew the plinth.

Attention! Whatever method of laying the carpet is chosen, in any case, you should carefully straighten the material on the floor surface. To do this, you can use a roller.

What to use as a substrate?

Under the carpet, as well as under the laminate, it is recommended to lay the substrate. It will help extend the life of the material, improve the performance of heat and noise insulation, and has shock-absorbing properties. Almost any material can be used as a substrate for carpet. It can be synthetic felt, polyurethane foam, rubber backing. The main thing is that the material is elastic, and this is quite simple to check - you need to crush a piece of the substrate in your hands and see if it returns to its original state.

Important! Underlayment must be installed if the carpet is to be installed on concrete base. In case of wooden floors it can be neglected.

Preparing for styling

To lay the carpet in accordance with all the rules, the rough base must be prepared. It must be clean and dry. But simply cleaning the floor is not enough. It is necessary to make sure that the base is even, and if necessary, carry out a series of work to correct the situation (if the floor is curved). The concrete floor can be leveled with a self-leveling mixture, and the wooden floor can be covered with plywood, chipboard or other dense and durable materials.

If the coating will be laid on a wooden floor, it is important to inspect the surface of the substrate for protruding nail heads. If there are any, then they are hammered into the boards as much as possible - they should not stick out.

Before laying the carpet, the baseboards are also removed, unless we are talking about a new house in which no repairs have been made. Now plastic skirting boards are widely used, which are easy to remove - just remove the protective bar and unscrew the screws that press the product against the wall. Wooden, nailed, will have to be dismantled by force. If necessary, they can be removed as carefully as possible and then used again after laying the carpet. But this is not always possible.

Also, floors, if they are wooden, are recommended to be treated with antiseptic compounds in order to reduce the risk of developing fungus, mold, and the appearance of colonies of microorganisms. Any rough surface must be treated with water-repellent preparations.

On a note! When laying carpet, it is important to maintain the correct temperature in the room. It should be more than +15 degrees. And the humidity of the air at the same time is not less than 75%.

The surface of the subfloor is recommended to be primed if we are talking about adhesive methods of laying carpet, that is, it is planned to use glue or double-sided tape. Then the material will hold much more reliably than in the absence of a primer layer on the base.

How to lay carpet with your own hands

Let us consider in more detail how the carpet is laid on glue or double-sided tape.

Step 1. Before starting work, it is recommended to purchase all necessary tools and materials. This is the carpet itself in the required quantity, double-sided tape, glue, scissors, a breadboard knife, a ruler and a tape measure, a tool for trimming the carpet border, a plaster knife, a notched trowel and a roller.

Step 2 Calculate required amount carpet is not difficult - it is enough to know the area of the room (so much material will be required). It is important to consider that the supply of carpet should be quite extensive. The material is purchased taking into account the fact that on each side 40 cm should be added to the total area of the carpet.

Step 3 The surface of the subfloor is cleaned of the old coating. Skirting boards are removed. The floor is cleared of debris and dirt.

Step 4 You need to make sure the floor is level. For this, it is used building level or a long rail about 2 m long - the gaps between it and the floor should not be more than 2 mm.

Step 5 If necessary, the floor is polished. In the process, small irregularities are removed. If the irregularities are large, the base should be leveled.

Important! The subfloor must be dry and free from grease. If there are any, then they are removed before laying the carpet.

Step 6 A day before laying the carpet is rolled out on the prepared base. It should settle down a bit and level out. You need to work with the roll carefully so as not to “break” it. Traces of fractures will be visible on the already laid coating.

Step 7 During the laying of the carpet are observed certain rules: the joints between the individual sheets should be perpendicular to the window. The direction of the pile should go towards the window.

Step 8 The carpet installation process begins. The material is already on the floor, but it is important to make sure that it is laid with an overlap on the walls around the entire perimeter.

Step 9 The coating rolls out from the center to the edges.

Step 10 The material is cut using a leveler or a breadboard knife. The carpet is cut along the junction of the walls and the floor of the room. The corners are cut on a piece of wood laid on the floor, on which the bent edge of the carpet is placed. If the coating will consist of several strips, then they are laid with an overlap of 10 cm.

Step 11 At the junction of two canvases, an incision is made about 5 cm from the edge of one of the segments of the carpet. Two layers of material are cut at once. For convenience, it is recommended to cut along the length laid on the carpet. metal rail. Thus, it will turn out to form a beautiful and neat joint of two pieces of carpet.

Attention! When gluing the material, it is important to pay Special attention cut places. They must be glued very carefully.

Step 12 Depending on the size of the room, the method of fixation is also selected. For example, if the area of the room is no more than 12 m 2, then it is enough to stick double-sided tape around the perimeter - it will hold the carpet. If the dimensions of the room are larger and the area varies from 12 to 20 m 2, then the adhesive tape is glued every meter and along the perimeter of the walls. Adhesive is used in rooms larger than 20 m2. Thanks to him, styling will be easier and cleaner.

Step 13 Laying with adhesive tape is done as follows: the spread carpet is folded in half. Along the perimeter of the room in the place where part of the carpet lay, and on each meter of the room pieces of double-sided tape are glued. The protective tape has not yet been removed from it.

Step 14 The adhesive tape is removed from the adhesive tape, and the carpet is carefully laid out on the floor surface onto the adhesive tape. The coating is glued from the center to the edges of the room.

Step 15 Laying with glue is done as follows: the carpet is also folded in half, and the floor surface under it is smeared with glue using a notched trowel. Before laying the carpet, the adhesive is aged for about 10 minutes.

Step 16 The carpet is laid out on a surface treated with glue, and smoothed in the direction from the center to the edges.

Step 17 To prevent the edge of the material from blooming, as well as for joining the carpet with other types of floor coverings, thresholds are used. At the same time, the nut is fastened in such a way that the screws do not pass through the carpet - it will simply be pressed by the bar.

Step 18 Skirting boards are installed around the perimeter of the room. They will additionally fix the material.

When installing carpet, some features should also be taken into account. It is important to know them in order to avoid mistakes.

So, quite simply and quickly, you can make an even and beautiful, and most importantly, a pleasant floor covering in the house. Carpet is an indispensable material for those whose feet are cold. And thanks to the wide variety of colors and lengths of the pile, you can always choose the option that you like and decorate the room.

Ease of use floor covering largely depends on its correct installation. Violation of technology will lead to earlier wear. Proper styling carpet is not difficult task and you can do it on your own. And it won't take that much time.

Carpeting may vary. The choice of a particular method depends on the purpose and size of the room. But in order to make a final decision, it is necessary to take into account the recommendations of the manufacturer. So, here are the laying technologies that exist:

There is one more thing. Under the carpet it is recommended to lay a special substrate. Even if a mat with a very short and dense pile is used, some underlays will give a soft feeling - when the foot is "buried" in the mat. But this is not the main thing. The main thing - when using a substrate under the carpet, the service life of the coating is almost doubled. And another plus is the increase in sound insulation.

Substrate under the carpet - types, choice

If you want to have a soft, cozy floor that you can not only walk on, but also sit and lie down, it would be nice to lay a substrate under the carpet. This layer makes it possible not only to get a soft floor, but also to make it easier to remove the coating and change it. And if a dense and thick substrate is laid, it will also improve sound insulation. Not drastically, of course, but it will be quieter.

The laying of carpet with underlayment takes place in two stages. First, a substrate is glued onto the prepared base. After it has dried, lay the coating. The method of fixing the carpet to the substrate can be any. Again, it depends on the load and the availability of furniture on wheels, the need for replacement, etc.

The substrate can be:

 • textile;
 • felt (natural felt or synthetic);
 • reinforced;
 • foamed vinyl;
 • polyurethane foam materials;
 • rubber (corrugated or flat).

In principle, it is necessary to select according to a set of characteristics, but it is important that the substrate is elastic. Checking its elasticity is simple: you need to crush it. If it crumpled without effort, it will not work. If it was possible to squeeze only slightly, and after removing the effort, it immediately took its former shape - it's normal. Some types of substrates (rubber, for example) cannot be crushed at all. But it also depends on the thickness. Optimal for houses and apartments - 0.65-1.00 cm.

By the way, if you have linoleum laid on your floor and it has not peeled off, has not gone in waves, but simply lost its appearance or is tired, it can also be used as a substrate. I mean, it doesn't have to be removed.

How to lay carpet on linoleum? Yes, by any means. Carpet with a rubberized layer can be laid by any method. Even if it's just duct tape. More soft options on a felt basis, it is better to stick, but not on glue, but on a fixative (read below).

Foundation Requirements

In order for the carpet to serve for a long time and not lose its appearance, it must be placed on a flat base. Since the coating is "hairy" and elastic, special requirements no evenness. The coating will repeat the outlines of the base. But in places of sharp drops, scuffs form after a while - here the coating is subjected to increased wear. To avoid this, here's what to avoid:

 • Sharp changes in height - steps, pits.
 • unstable base.
 • Dust, debris, sand.

All these shortcomings are easily eliminated. In general, everything is clear with dust and debris - thoroughly clean with a vacuum cleaner before laying. Irregularities are best eliminated. If there are noticeable differences in height, they can be sanded or filled with putty - if it is a plank floor or covered with a repair mixture - if the base is concrete. If you don’t want to buy a repair compound, you just need to mix cement (1 part) with sand (3-4 parts), add a little PVA and dilute with water. But the disadvantage of such a composition is that it must be left for at least two weeks so that there is no excess moisture in the base. Reminders work faster.

If you want to lay carpet on a wooden floor, you must first level it. For this, it is not necessary to do u. Under the carpet, you can sand the board or lay plywood. Plywood is now expensive, so any dense and durable will do. sheet material(GVL, etc.).

You can lay carpet on any dry and even base: on concrete, wooden floors, laid plywood, OSB and other materials

If you want to lay carpet on a concrete floor, then you can not put anything on the screed if it is dry and even. But for a more comfortable feeling, you can use a substrate or lay plywood. If so far only. If necessary, take care of waterproofing.

How to join carpet

First of all, try to make a joint not in the zone where they walk or which is constantly in sight, try to calculate so that most of the joint was under the furniture. If it doesn't work, it's not critical. You just need to make the joint neat. There are two ways to join carpet.

First way

The first option is suitable for covering without a pattern and with a short pile without loops. We carry out cutting already on the spot - after we have laid out the coating "at the permanent place of registration." The joint is perfect.

Next, glue the carpet at the junction. We turn the coating to the sides, apply glue or glue double-sided tape. We return the coating, smooth, press. When fixing, we try to make the connection without gaps at all. It has some elasticity, so everything is real.

Second way

The second way of joining two pieces of carpet is both simpler and more difficult. On the cover with drawings, only he is available. First, the edge of one piece is trimmed - between the loops. The factory edge is rarely normal. But if you have no flaws, you can do it without pruning. The second piece fits with the selection of the pattern (if necessary). If the edge somewhere does not fit again, we cut between the loops.

When joining carpet, the choice of method depends on the presence of a pattern.

This method is usually used for carpets with medium and long pile. Small errors are not visible, as they are covered with a pile. But there is still the possibility of achieving an almost perfect match when gluing. When laying the carpet on glue, fixative or adhesive tape, it will be possible to slightly stretch or tamp the coating to a perfect match. You know how to join carpet. To decide, you can try both techniques on small scraps. So you will understand what will be best in your case.

Free laying of carpet and fixation with adhesive tape

To lay carpet free way you need to know some tricks. First - if it is not possible to cover the floor with one piece, the junction is glued. Nothing without this. The easiest option is to fix the joint with double-sided tape. Two strips of double-sided tape on both sides of the seam.

Need to cut carpet sharp knife by laying down a board or plywood

Second. You can not lay only material brought from the store. We bring the carpet into the house and let it mature for several days - at least two for sure. Next comes the actual carpet installation. First, we measure the exact dimensions of the room. We proceed from the fact that there should be a gap of 5-8 mm to the walls. This is the so-called compensation gap. It allows the coating to expand and shrink with changes in humidity and temperature. If you lay the coating right up close, as the temperature rises, “waves” will appear on the coating.

The technology of laying carpet under the plinth

So, we cut the carpet to the required size, lay it out in the room. That's not all. There are a few more steps.

Loose-lay carpet suitable for rooms up to 12 square meters. With an area of up to 20 squares, you can glue it on adhesive tape. It must be glued around the perimeter and stripes every meter. Additional stripes at the junction.

We use adhesive tape

The technology for laying carpet on adhesive tape is not too different. We begin work after it has rested for several days, we cut it a little less than in size, we wait a couple of days. If the gap remains within the desired limits, we begin to fasten it. We turn away the coating from the walls to the center. We fix the adhesive tape in the intended places and along the walls. If you fix the coating with skirting boards, then glue at a distance of about 20 cm parallel to the walls. With free flooring “up to the baseboards”, we glue the adhesive tape just next to them.

Laying carpet under the baseboard is suitable for small rooms up to 12 squares of area

If necessary, we roll the coating and stick adhesive tape in the previously occupied area. Then remove the protective tape, roll out the coating. Everything is simple. It is important that when fixing the carpet, it is rolled out gradually, without waves. To do this, we smooth it with a board, pressing it with an edge. You can also use a large spatula.

How to lay carpet on a gripper

Laying carpet on the gripper is one of the types of free laying. It's just that the coating does not lie under its own weight, but is slightly stretched and fixed on the pins of the gripper rail. You need special tools to work. They cost a lot, so hardly anyone will buy them for a one-time use. In general, we will describe this method, rather, for review.

These are grippers. But this way of laying is now unpopular.

A gripper is a plank of wood with spikes sticking out at a certain angle. Reiki nailed to the floor close to the walls. The coating is cut out with a margin - on the curvature of the walls. The carpet is laid in the middle of the room and rolled out to the walls. With the help of another device, it is pulled and hooked to the protruding spikes. Excess is cut off by another special device flush with the wall. The edge is covered with a strip of the same carpet.

gluing

AT large rooms(more than 20 square meters) or with heavy loads on the coating, The best way carpet laying - gluing. But today, gluing can be different.

You can lay the carpet on glue or on fixation

Types of adhesive for carpet

A few years ago, gluing carpet was the main technique. The glue was used. But in this case, it is difficult to remove the coating. Often it delaminates - part remains glued to the base, part comes off. Today there is a compound called fixation. It does not dry completely, but forms a sticky layer. Like the one on the tape. That is, after processing with fixation, the entire floor becomes a huge adhesive tape and the carpet can be re-layed several times. How much - depends on the smoothness of the base. If it is felt, hairs remain on the glue. And "several" in this case- two three. If the base is rubberized, then you can peel it off up to a dozen times.

So, there are two types of adhesives for carpet:

 • Glue. Sticks to the base. During dismantling, part of the coating remains glued. It has to be removed somehow. When applying, use a spatula B1. The average consumption is 450-500 grams per square meter.

 • Retainer. Creates a sticky film (similar to adhesive tape) that simply holds the coating in place. When dismantling, the coating is removed completely, individual “hairs” may remain. If it is necessary to replace the adhesive composition, it is removed with a special remover. Fixation for carpet is applied with a velor roller or A1 trowel. Approximate consumption is 150-200 grams per square meter.

So laying on fixation is more reliable than on adhesive tape. If it immediately sticks "not very", you can re-lay it without problems. Or remove the dirty carpet and clean it, and then lay it again. But how to glue the carpet to the floor, you choose. Maybe you trust more regular glue. That's your business.

Locking technology

Laying carpet for fixing differs from ordinary gluing in that after applying the composition, you have to wait for some time - 20-30 minutes, until the composition dries and stops getting dirty. Easy to check - touch with your finger. If it sticks but stays clean, you can stick it on. And again, the brought coating should be aged at home for at least two days. Next, you can start styling.

Here is the technology for laying carpet on fixation:

As you can see, attaching the carpet to the latch is not too difficult. The best part is that if it doesn't work out, you can try again. So you don't have to worry too much. And there's no need to rush. Carpet installation can last as long as you need, since the fixing layer does not change over time. Comfortable.

Laying carpet with glue

When using the traditional adhesive composition the technology is different, but only in terms of working with the glue itself. The procedure - laying the carpet, trimming, rolling - all this is exactly the same. Only after applying the glue do not wait, but immediately roll out the coating and immediately smooth it out. The task is to press well so that swelling does not form.

When laying the carpet on the glue, you need to spread the base and roll out the coating

To glue the carpet to the floor well, you need to act quickly. The period of possible correction is far from infinite. Therefore, at a fast pace, we apply glue to the second half and glue it, achieving a match on the seam. While the glue has not set, you can try to tear off the previously glued edge, if necessary. But if the time has already passed, it is better not to take risks and achieve a match at the expense of a more “fresh” part. That is, all corrections are only later laid by half.
