General description of the design of the workbench

This version of the workbench has the simplest design. It is attached to the wall on one side, has two support legs and can be folded (retracted) to a vertical position. Countertop manufacturing

A sheet of plywood will be used to make the countertop. It makes no sense to give dimensions, since in each case the dimensions must be selected individually for the needs of the master, the geometry of the room and the work that is planned to be performed at this workplace.   • Surface evenness. If the countertop shows signs of deformation and does not have flat surface, then working on such a homemade workbench will be difficult, to say the least;
  • Mechanical strength. The tabletop must be durable, that is, have greater resistance to mechanical stress. Since rather massive objects (machines or large-sized workpieces) can be installed on the desktop, the tabletop must withstand such loads and not deform during operation.
  • Surface strength. Surface resistance to external mechanical influences. So on the desktop are executed various works associated with the processing of materials, painting, etc., then the presence of a protective layer on the countertop will be an advantage and will save the surface from wear.

Frame - the basis of the future homemade workbench

The frame is the main load-bearing element of a workbench made of wood. It must be strong, as all the load will fall on it. We recommend making it from an array, for example, a bar 40x80mm.

The most common wood and less expensive is pine, so it is quite suitable, however, if you make the base and a denser material, such as beech, birch or oak, then the strength will increase significantly, although such costs are not justified.

To fasten the bars together, you can use different kinds fasteners, but the most simple and universal way- this is a fastening on self-tapping screws at the end. In this example, the method of secret fastening with self-tapping screws is used.

Yes, with this option, the screws are hidden and they are not visible, but this option is not recommended, since the strength of such a connection is not great. We suggest using it as fastening with self-tapping screws in the end, as well as using additional metal corners installed inside the corner and also on self-tapping screws. In this case, the strength will be sufficient.

The fastening of the frame to the tabletop in this example is also carried out with self-tapping screws that enter “into the edge” (at an angle) of the frame and then into the tabletop. The advantage of this fastening is the simplicity and concealment of self-tapping screws. Nevertheless, the quality of the connection suffers here, since there is a possibility of splitting the edge of the frame. It is still recommended to use one of the three mounting methods described below:

  • are being made through holes self-tapping screws pass through the tabletop and through the tabletop into the frame. With this option, there will be the maximum structural strength. The disadvantage is obvious - the caps of the screws will be visible on the countertop, although, of course, they can be easily drowned and hidden "flush".
  • WITH inner corner between the tabletop and the frame, several (6-9 pieces) corners are installed, which are mounted on self-tapping screws. The top surface of the countertop will not suffer and the view will be neat. However, mounting on self-tapping screws that do not go through the countertop is not so reliable. Below is a drawing of an example of using an inner corner.

Installation of the support element

The supporting element is a simple bar of the same section as the bars used for the frame (80x40mm), which must be attached to the wall and in the future it will be the main fulcrum of the future homemade locksmith workbench. The installation of the support element depends on the material of the wall to which we are attaching. If the wall is wooden, then it is difficult to offer something better than “planting” on self-tapping screws. If the wall is brick or concrete, then you can use dowels or lay anchors, etc. Of course, before installation, we will use the level for leveling.

The height must be selected based on the technological tasks for which this workbench is created. However, it should be noted that according to GOST 13025.3-85 standard height it is considered 720-780 mm from the floor level. Usually, office furniture has a height of 750 mm.

The fastening of the frame with the worktop to the supporting element can be done different ways. The easiest is to use a roll loop. This is what was done in our case (see photo).

In addition to the piano loop, you can use various options mobile connections - simple door hinges, "frogs", furniture hinges etc. It is important to note that their number must be sufficient to withstand the loads that are planned for our folding workbench, made by hand.

Installing the legs

In addition to the supporting element, our home-made metal workbench made of wood will rest on a couple more legs. They need to be made foldable so that in the folded position they fold easily and do not stick out. To do this, they need to be bolted to the frame.

Alternatively, in addition to the bolt, you can use a piece from the stud, fastening it with nuts on both sides. In order not to make a big variety in the list of materials used, the legs can be made from the same bar 80x40mm. In order for the legs to fold, they must have roundings on one side, which are easiest to do with a jigsaw.

Set the axis of rotation of the legs. It is quite clear that if you just tighten the bot, then it will press the leg against the frame and its further rotation will be difficult, so you need to install a couple of washers between the leg and the frame. Or maybe not a couple, but 3 or 4 for better rotation, since when the bolt is tightened, the washers will sink into soft wood and to ensure the gap just need a third of the washer.

When designing a workbench, you need to consider whether it will be permanently installed in the workshop or constantly assembled and disassembled. In the second case, it would be reasonable to lighten the structure due to a material of smaller thickness. In a collapsible workbench, you can make an unscrewing tabletop, or you can provide for folding legs.

It is better to have a workbench by the window, additional local lighting is also required. Directly next to the workbench, you need to provide several electrical outlets for equipment. All wires nearby working area must be enclosed in a box or corrugated pipe.

Selection of materials

The optimal material for the workbench is planed timber, from which the frame frame and legs will be made. For legs, you can take it with a size of 100 * 70 mm, and for jumpers - 100 * 50 mm. The tabletop can be made from even boards 5 cm thick. It can also be made from a single piece of fabric, for example, an old blank door or laminated chipboard with a fairly durable coating. For a workbench, it is better to choose hard rocks wood, preferably beech, oak or maple. Thicker timbers and boards will make the workbench heavier and more stable, and it will be more comfortable to work on it.

Fasteners for the manufacture of a workbench are selected taking into account whether it will be prefabricated or collapsible. Self-tapping screws, nails and nuts with bolts will come in handy.

Before building a workbench, you need to pick up a vice. It is convenient if there are 2 of them - on the right side and on the left in front. In the first, you can fix long boards, and in the second, you can clamp short parts. The most versatile jaw width is 175 mm.

The manufacture of the workbench takes place in 2 stages: assembly of the base and installation. At each stage and during each operation, you need to control the size of the parts and the evenness of their installation using a level.

The base is a frame of bars fastened in such a way that the structure is as rigid as possible. To do this, a horizontal jumper is placed between the legs of the workbench, and in the middle, along the length, a drawstring is provided. Lintels and drawers are placed 40-50 cm from the floor, then shelves for storing tools can be installed on them. The bars for the base are combined with the help of a tenon-groove connection, gluing it. In places where this is not possible, self-tapping screws are used. If it is assumed that the workbench will be disassembled, then you can connect the parts of the support frame using metal corners. Usually, grooves and spikes are first prepared, according to the drawing, and then the entire structure is assembled at once, gluing the joints with wood glue and fixing them with clamps.

A good option for a stationary workbench, if one or more parts support frames can be screwed to the wall, so the design will be even more reliable. You can increase the strength with the help of diagonal jumpers or wedge-shaped inserts between the legs and top frames from the same timber, which are fastened with self-tapping screws. Narrow ends the upper part of the frame must also be connected with a jumper.

Table top and useful accessories

If the countertop is constructed from separate boards, then they need to be properly driven to each other so that debris does not get into the cracks. The size of the countertop should be a few centimeters larger than the base, so that it is convenient to work and clean it. The boards are nailed or screwed to 3 bars located across the boards on the back of the table top. At the base, you need to provide grooves for these bars.

The board top is carefully sanded several times and coated with a protective solution, preferably oil or drying oil, to avoid injury from chips during further work. The tabletop is screwed to the base with metal corners.

A vise is attached to the finished tabletop, under them it is necessary to provide a recess in the end of the tabletop so that the vertical plate forms one plane with it. The underside of the workbench will also require a plywood gasket. The jaws of the vise should be flush with the table top. Applying a vise, mark the place for the holes and fasten them with bolts and nuts (M12 will do). The holes for the bolt heads must be pre-milled so that they completely sink into them. The vise should not be located in the very corner, so as not to disrupt it under heavy load.

In addition to the vise on the workbench, it is necessary to provide stops. You can fix the finished ones by drilling a hole of the desired diameter in the countertop, or make them yourself. It is not worth using bolts or round dowels instead of stops, since the bolts can damage the workpieces with their heads, and the dowels do not fix the parts well enough.

It is easier to make rectangular stops, or pegs, which are both height-adjustable for different parts and securely fix them. Under them, you need to make holes in the countertop or build it up with the help of bars of suitable thickness, screwed to its edge, and closed with a bar on the other side. The nests should be located at a distance of half from each other from the vise stroke so that any workpiece can be fixed.

The pegs themselves are sawn from hardwood, you can make them with a “spring” that is screwed to the base, or you can just make them rectangular. Rectangular stops can be slightly expanded upwards, then they will be fixed in the sockets more reliably.

Building a carpentry workbench with your own hands is not an easy task, but then it workplace can serve the owner for a long time, grow useful details and fixtures and adapt to the specific needs of each master.

  • The length and width of the workbench also depend on the area of ​​​​the existing workshop. Optimal sizes are as follows: length - 200 cm, width - 80 - 100 cm.

Materials used for self-construction of a workbench

For countertops, it is better to choose wood species such as: maple, beech, oak. You will need even boards with a thickness of at least 50 mm. After manufacturing, the countertop must be well sanded and coated with a protective solution (oil or drying oil).
In addition, you will need the following components and tools:

  • glue;
  • self-tapping screws and bolts;
  • hammer;
  • drill with drills;
  • mallet;
  • chisel;
  • square;
  • building level;
  • grinder or sandpaper.

In order to make sure after assembling the workbench that you can work on it, you can do the following: stand close to the workbench, stretch your arms and lean on it with your palms. If the dimensions are correct, then you do not have to bend your back.

Workbench equipment

Just have a desktop, because the workpieces must be fixed somehow. For this purpose, the workbench must be equipped with a vise. Usually they are installed on both sides of the table: on the right, in the end part of the table, one vice (transverse) is attached, and on the left - along long side tables - longitudinal.

The longitudinal clamp is mainly used to secure the part during planing. Its jaws should be at the level of the table surface parallel to its leading edge. On the underside, at the place where the vise is attached, you need to install a plywood gasket that will protect the bottom surface of the table from crushing.

The installation location of the vice and other equipment also depends on which hand is working - left or right. Basically, recommendations for the placement of equipment are given for "right-handed" craftsmen.

The working board is also equipped with a number of holes located at the front edge of the table. They are designed to install metal or wooden stops used when working with parts of various lengths. Metal stops last longer, while wood stops are safer for woodworking tools.
On the opposite long side of the table, a tray or chute is made into which you can put it while you work.

The underbench part of the table can be used to store workpieces and tools. It can be equipped in several ways, depending on the personal preferences of the master:

  • open shelves;
  • closed shelves with doors;
  • drawers.

The base of the workbench can be fixed to the floor, this will make it more stable. In addition to the vise, the workbench can be equipped with the following devices:

  • wooden clamps;
  • stationary drill;
  • turning and milling equipment.

At the same time, it is necessary for the reliability of all fasteners and the presence of safety devices.
