How to cut drywall at home. How to cut drywall at home: consider the tools, the better to cut drywall How to cut drywall at home smoothly

It is necessary to cut drywall during repairs almost every 5-10 minutes. Why? Because the sheet of this material will be at least 2 square meters and without residues it is impossible to mark a wall, ceiling or any other structure. The smaller the structure, the more you have to cut, and it is not always necessary to cut it evenly (corners, uneven walls and no one canceled the ceilings either). What to do? There is only one way out - to learn how to quickly and efficiently cut drywall.

You will need to make not only cuts “under the ruler” across the sheet, but also cut out triangles, rectangular pieces, ovals or circles (for example, for lighting elements). It is advisable to consider several options for cutting drywall at once, from a regular clerical knife to an electric jigsaw. Now we will consider the most simple and quality ways cutting and processing the edges of drywall.

How to cut drywall with a mounting knife "without noise and dust"

hand tool this action is much easier and faster. The most interesting thing is that the quality of the cut will also be much better if you need to spread the sheet along or cut off an even piece from it. The theory is superfluous here, let's move on to practice and immediately cut drywall:

  1. We make the necessary measurements and draw a line. It is advisable to stock up on a marker so that it is convenient to look at the “fat” mark from any side.

    2. Along the edge of the line, you can attach a long metal ruler or a profile that is used to fasten drywall.

    3. We put the tip of the knife on the edge of the line, we begin to lead, exerting a pressure of 2-3 kg on the drywall mounting knife.

    4. After the line is cut, it is necessary to bend the sheet so that the cut is made with outer side. You can put the sheet on the floor, hold the edges with your hands and lightly kick with your knee at the cut, but on the opposite side, the sheet will crack and bend.

    5. You will have a drywall corner, now you need to take a mounting knife and cut the paper on the other side of the corner. We put the knife on top and stretch to the very bottom, we get quality cut.

This method is ideal when cutting long strips ONLY, because you need a large pressure arm for a good break line. If the lines are made oval or cut off a piece only 5-10 cm from the edge of the sheet, it may break unevenly, and the edge will crumble. After the cut, you need to use a drywall planer to “smooth the edges and remove the corner for subsequent plastering (then there will be no “eyebrows”).

It is convenient to cut on the table or on the floor, putting a sheet of drywall on 2 wooden bars next to the cut line. Keep in mind that gypsum often crumbles after a drywall break, so it would be better to put something under it if the cut is on a clean surface.

Features of cutting drywall with a hacksaw - an option for the hardworking

A hacksaw is better to use if necessary curly cutting when you need to cut drywall in a semicircle or make holes of various shapes inside it. With the help of a mounting knife, this cannot be done, at least with good quality. Now let's look at how to cut a sheet of drywall with a hacksaw and make holes inside it.

STEP 1: markup. It is necessary to draw a sheet of drywall on the back side, make holes in the corners of such a size that a hacksaw blade can fit in them (you can use a sharp knife or a drill).

STEP 2: sawing. We insert a drywall tool (hacksaw) into the hole and saw to the other extreme point, it is better to avoid turns.

STEP 3: when the cut has been made along all the drawn sides, and the figure inside the sheet has “fallen out”, you can process the edges. Use a planer or file if the hole is very small and no other tool can be placed there.

We looked at how to cut drywall and cut a hole in it with the desired rectangular shape, but there is an even more difficult task - non-standard or oval figures inside the sheet. Here it is already necessary to work with thin blades on a hacksaw, which will be convenient to turn during internal cutting. In such cases, it is better to abandon the hacksaw and use a jigsaw, since the quality of the edges of the cut hole inside will be much higher.

We cut drywall with an electric jigsaw - an option for the lazy

If you do not know how to cut drywall at home and are afraid to experiment, then it is better to entrust the processing of the material to an electric tool. A jigsaw is the best tool for cutting drywall, as it allows you to make a canvas of any shape and can make holes inside a sheet of drywall. Curved lines will be as accurate as possible, and the edge will be much easier to handle with a drywall planer.

Consider step by step instructions how to cut drywall with a jigsaw:
1. We draw a line along which it will be necessary to cut the material. It is better to use a black marker so that it is clearly visible.

2. We install a drywall sheet on several bricks or stools so that so that there are no objects under the cutting line(they can be hooked by a saw). The sheet should lie balanced, be not tense at the cutting points - the quality of the cut will improve significantly.

3. We install the jigsaw at the beginning of the line, turn on the laser sight (if there is one on the tool) and lead exactly along the desired path. Or we bring drywall to a tripod with a jigsaw.

4. We demolish the edges at 45 degrees, for plastering the surface. It can even be done with sandpaper if the processing area is not too large.

5. If you don’t have a planer or corners are bad, then a drywall cutter will become an actual tool. It can be put on a screwdriver or drill, set the cone between the sheets and draw along the joint. Cutting knives will remove the edges of each sheet at the same angle - very convenient for large volumes of work, where you need to quickly and efficiently process many sheets.

Perhaps you wanted to ask how to cut L-shaped drywall under a door or window opening? Here universal tool can not found, you must use both a hacksaw and a jigsaw, because with just a jigsaw or a hacksaw you cannot get inner corner 90 degrees.

The jigsaw will perfect tool for you, if there is nothing to cut a profile for drywall, since it is also suitable for metal. You need to buy a few files "for all occasions" and it will be possible to cut not only drywall, but also metal, wood, stone and other materials. Now let's see a video of cutting drywall with a paint knife without noise and dust:

Successful repair and pleasant work with your own hands!

Each of us has done renovations at some point in our lives. And many do it every couple of years. To insulate your home or create beautiful figures on the ceiling, in the bathroom or any other room, we often use a material such as drywall. And many of those who prefer to do repairs with their own hands, wondered if it was possible to make a drywall cut on their own at home, and how difficult it was.

Most often, the owners resort to help strangers(specialists), while spending large cash. This article will help you manage this process yourself, do not waste time looking for specialists, and help you get exactly the result you want.

Peculiarities

Drywall is a relatively young material used in the execution construction works. He gained wide popularity due to his harmlessness, versatility, good sound insulation. GKL itself, as the name implies, consists of two sheets of thick cardboard and plaster placed between them. Standard Width one sheet is one hundred and twenty centimeters. Since drywall is large, during construction work, you have to resort to cutting it.

For cutting on drywall, we need a tape measure to get the right sizes(a ruler can also be used), a pencil, a pen (or any other similar tool), with which we will apply the shapes we need on a sheet, a tool for the cut itself (hacksaw, grinder, jigsaw, cutter), peeling planer (for processing edges after the cut), a saw (may be a circular or annular one), or a drill with a crown. The section of drywall, although it does not present any difficulties, but its incorrect cut leads to a large overrun of the material, and, accordingly, to an extra waste of money.

The incision of the GKLV is not a time-consuming job, any beginner, with due desire, is able to make the incision himself, without resorting to the help of professionals.

A brief process for cutting drywall is as follows. First, drywall cutting is carried out, after a break. Also, the simple composition of drywall is easy to drill, which is necessary for making various holes.

This type material is divided into different kinds depending on the assigned functions:

  • moisture resistant;
  • standard;
  • fire resistant;
  • acoustic;
  • increased strength.

Moisture-resistant drywall is needed when used in rooms with an increased amount of vapor in the air. Fire-resistant drywall is used where there are fireplaces and near places with open flames.

Initially, drywall was used only for leveling surfaces.

There are three standard view sheet:

  • 3000x1200 millimeters;
  • 2500x1200 millimeters;
  • 2000x1200 millimeters.

Depending on the type of drywall, their thickness also differs, which affects the complexity of cutting.

Ceiling plasterboard has a thickness of 9.5 millimeters, wall - 12.5 millimeters, arched - 6.5 millimeters.

Consider a few features when cutting drywall:

  • It is necessary to place the drywall sheet on a flat and stable surface, as it is very flexible.
  • If the drywall sheet is large, then cutting must be done gradually.
  • Before placing the sheet on the work surface, make sure it is dry. A wet sheet will be unusable.
  • Cutting is recommended to be carried out from the side that will be located against the wall. This will subsequently hide possible shortcomings formed during cutting.
  • Needs to be protected personal protection eyes and respiratory organs.

When cutting drywall, do not use circular saw because of her ability to create a large number of harmful dust.

What is the best way to cut?

Drywall cutting is performed by various types of tools, some of them are:

  • mounting knife;
  • hacksaw;
  • An electric jigsaw is a hand-held power tool that cuts various types of materials using the reciprocating motion of the saw blade.

Let's consider each of them separately.

Mounting knife

In this method, we need a drill and, in fact, a mounting knife.

For cutting drywall mounting knife it is necessary to measure the required size of drywall in length or width. We will also need a metal ruler. We apply it to the cut line. Then an incision is made this material. The process itself is quite simple, it will not take a lot of time. The sloppy edge left after the cut can be corrected with a planer. It is recommended when the drywall is broken on the table so that the edge protrudes one or two centimeters, and when cutting on the floor, place any object resembling a bar under it.

When cutting drywall with one person, it is enough convenient way is the notch of the part on one side, after which the drywall is carefully turned over to the other side and continues to be notched on the other side. This method allows you to cut if necessary thin strips drywall with minimal damage.

Hacksaw

This tool will allow us to cut out only small shapes, such as a circle, square, rectangle, rhombus and others. For achievement best result It is recommended to use a hacksaw with a thin blade.

We draw the figures we need of the appropriate size, after which we use a drill to make a hole corresponding to the size of the blade of our hacksaw. Then we cut out the shapes we need. Just like the previous method, you can use a planer or file to achieve neat edges if your pieces are too small. It is recommended to use a hacksaw for metal, but in its absence it is possible to use a hacksaw for wood.

This process can be described in more detail as follows. A sheet of drywall is laid on flat surface(you can use a stack of drywall sheets). Next, the necessary measurements are made, and the dimensions are applied with a pencil (or any other object) to the sheet. Marks are applied on both sides of the sheet, starting from the edge of the sheet. Then they are interconnected, forming the desired line or figure. In some cases, a marking thread is used. Lines are marked on both sides of the drywall.

The next step is directly cutting drywall. The length of the blade of our tool should not exceed the thickness of the sheet. The sheet is cut with a knife (preferably several times to achieve best effect), turn the sheet over to the other side. Next, we knock several times along the cut line, and cut the rest of the drywall with the same knife.

Electric jigsaw

cutting electric jigsaw is the fastest of all, but at the same time quite expensive. Its price varies from 1500 to 10 000 rubles. The price depends on the quality of this product. But the costs are absolutely worth it. Our ability to use it is greatly expanded. It becomes possible to cut lines and shapes various forms, including curved, The amount of waste is also significantly reduced. When working with a jigsaw, safety precautions must be observed. And before starting work, check the integrity of the wires and the serviceability of the tool.

For achievement desired effect we apply correctly the necessary forms or drawings on a sheet of drywall. Next, we place it on two stools (or any other supports) placed on both sides of the sheet. Then, using an electric jigsaw, we cut out the figures we have applied.

When cutting round holes, it is recommended to draw them with a compass, and when cutting, drill a hole inside the circle. The edges after cutting drywall need minimal processing, which also saves our time and effort, which is a significant plus.

When cutting, it is not recommended to linger in one place for a long time, and also to press on the sheet, using great force, in order to avoid breakage of the jigsaw and sheet. It is necessary to carefully process the edges of the plasterboard before hanging, for example, spotlight or socket.

Process details

When cutting drywall, it is customary to follow some rules, such as:

  • placing the sheet on a flat and stable surface;
  • the surface must be dry and without excess debris;
  • use personal protective equipment for the eyes and respiratory organs, as cutting leaves a large amount of small debris and dust.

When cutting a profile, various types of tools are used:

  • Hacksaw. This type of tool, regardless of whether it is narrow or wide, has a high flexibility of the cutting blade, which allows it to deviate from a given direction. This reduces the quality of the work and also increases the time spent on cutting.
  • Bulgarian. The tool is one of the best in construction work, including when cutting drywall.

  • metal scissors
  • Jigsaw.

Also in our life, moments are not ruled out in which it is necessary to make a cut on an already established sheet drywall for a lamp, paintings or any other things. There is also a way for this case.

First you need to make sure that the drywall is secure, after which the small holes we need are carefully cut out with a jigsaw, a drill with a nozzle, or an electric drill. Large holes are recommended to be cut with a knife according to the markings. When getting uneven edges, they can be removed with sandpaper or a hacksaw.

When cutting circles, there are a number of nuances. Most in a simple way cutting a circle in drywall is applying its desired size to a sheet, then carefully cut it in a circle with a blade, and knock out the core with a hammer (with little effort with any similar object). There is also the easiest way that saves time and effort - using a drill with a special cylindrical nozzle. This type of nozzle is usually used when cutting into the door of the lock mechanism with a latch.

There is also a so-called two-sided cut, which is carried out when various obstacles appear on the way of the sheet, be it a door, an opening, a beam, or any other. When such a situation arises, you have to make a cut (or cut) from the right side and desired shape. This manipulation is quite simple, but requires concentration, accuracy and care. One side of the sheet must be cut with a hacksaw, and the other side should be carefully cut with a knife. After completing the work, making a break and processing the edge with a planer.

When cutting drywall, it folds. It is advisable to do this carefully, without damaging the sheet. There are three possible ways drywall bending. The easiest way is to attach the desired workpiece to the profile and fix it in the desired position with self-tapping screws. This method is used for small sheets of 20-30 centimeters in size and a small arc size.

When working with drywall, many people ask themselves the question: how to cut drywall correctly? This process will not be difficult if you properly prepare the tool and apply markings to the material. How to cut drywall at home so that the minimum amount of waste is obtained? Which one is worth having on hand? Let's consider in more detail.

Tools for cutting drywall

In order to correctly apply the markup, you need to measure the plane on which they will be fixed. Then, using a tape measure or ruler, it is worth transferring, outlining the line with a pencil. Check your measurements again before you start cutting. This will help you avoid making mistakes.

Tools and material

Before you start cutting drywall at home, you need to prepare a tool. For this you will need:

  • drywall;
  • roulette;
  • T-square;
  • stationery knife.

Important: it is better to cut drywall only with a new, sharp, clerical knife.

Cutting a sheet of drywall in a straight line

Drywall board is a sandwich in which the gypsum core is surrounded on both sides by thick cardboard. The material is quite durable, maybe. You can cut drywall from any side. It is not difficult to cut the material; with a rather sharp blade, cut through one layer of cardboard and break it.

It is worth remembering that the knife must be carried confidently and strictly along the line that was drawn earlier. If the first time it was not possible to cut the cardboard, then they carry out this place several times until the cardboard is completely cut through. The T-square must be stationary during cutting. It is pressed tightly against the material, otherwise the cut will be uneven. A layer of paper is cut through with a slight grip gypsum board. This will help break the material evenly, without chips.

Once you have cut one layer of cardboard on the plate, you can proceed to the next step - break the material along the cut. If you did everything right, then it will not be difficult, holding the sheet with your feet, fold it into opposite side from the cut.

You can attract a second person if the layer of material is large. In principle, it does not matter how the material is broken, the main thing in this matter is an even and high-quality cut. Once you have folded the drywall along the cut, you need to carefully cut the second layer of cardboard. In fact, cutting drywall is easy. If you doubt that this process will be carried out correctly - try cutting the material first on a small piece.

How to make a round hole in the plasterboard

It is important to learn how to correctly make holes in sheets of material, since during installation it is often provided or switches. In addition, sometimes it is necessary to repair damaged areas in drywall. For, you should use a special tool and have some skill. Consider how to cut drywall at home, step by step:

Advice! Do not rush and put a lot of pressure on the tool - this can lead to material damage, since the crown can simply be clamped in drywall.

Round hole without the help of a power tool

This is the second way, which will require more effort. Marking is carried out, as in the first option, while you need to draw a circle of the desired diameter with a compass. Once the markup is ready, you need to do small hole at the edge of the circle. It can be drilled with a brace. Then you need to take it with sharp teeth, insert it into the hole and start sawing drywall strictly along the line.

Cutting a rectangular hole

The first step is to determine on the drywall slab where the hole will be.

To do this, measure the desired distance from the left edge of the drywall sheet and put a mark. If it is supposed to make a hole for a bar for several sockets, then a bar is substituted for this mark and outlined.

After that, you need to set the geometry - the bar must be strictly level. Draw the sides of the future hole well.

Then you need to drill holes in the corners of the rectangle, it is worth remembering that the drill must be of such a size that the jigsaw saw freely enters the hole in the material. A saw is inserted into each hole and a cut is made. This must be done very carefully, without strong pressure. The file must go along the line.

Important! It is worth wearing a mask or respirator so as not to breathe dust. It is better to make the hole a little smaller. It's always easier small hole to make a large one, for this it is enough to walk along the edges of the hole with a rasp.

Once the job is done, you need to inspect the hole made. Take the bar and try it on, preferably with sockets, so you will know exactly how suitable the hole is. If there is a need, then a hole can be made in an already finished structure, you just need to know for sure that there are no communication systems at the installation site. In the video, the wizard shows how to do square hole in drywall.

Wavy cut

It is easy to perform with a jigsaw, the main thing in this process is the correct markup. If required, it is enough to draw a wavy line of the desired curvature over the entire surface of the sheet and carefully, from the edge of the plate, cut the material strictly along the line. In the case when a wavy cut needs to be made in the middle of the sheet, then the following algorithm should be followed:

Advice! If the curve has strongly pronounced waves, then you need to drill holes at a distance of 15 cm from each other, then the saw will go much easier, and making the cut will be easier. If the edges turn out to be a little uneven, then they can always be earned with a rasp.

Conclusion

Drywall has become a popular material with builders due to the fact that working with it is not difficult. It is enough to read the manual or watch video tutorials on working with the material and learn how to cut drywall at home.

How to cut drywall? How to cut drywall

Today, drywall is widely used in construction and repair. You can work with this material yourself. However, you should first find out how drywall is cut, so that there are no difficulties during the repair process. Below are the main ways to work and list the tools you will need.

Cutting tools

How to cut drywall? For its cutting, there are special devices that

are quite expensive. They are used in enterprises where work with drywall is carried out on a large scale. For home use You can use improvised means that can be found in every home.

First of all, you need to mark out a sheet of drywall to cut it evenly. This is done with the help of a tape measure. simple pencil and a long line.

Several tools can be used to cut material. So, how to cut drywall:

  • hacksaw for metal;
  • construction knife;
  • jigsaw.

In rooms with high humidity moisture resistant drywall is used. It differs from ordinary material the presence of antiseptic additives in its composition. Some people have a question about how to cut moisture resistant drywall. It is not much different from ordinary material. It can be easily recognized by its green color. When cutting it, you can use the same tools. We will tell you in more detail how to work with each of them.

What is the best way to cut drywall

A hacksaw for metal differs from the one that saws wood with a thinner blade

blades. With its help, drywall is cut very easily. The edges of the material remain smooth and practically do not have nicks. A sheet of material must be placed on some kind of support and cut along the marked line.

A construction knife with a double-sided sharp blade can easily cut a dense sheet of drywall. To make the edge of the sheet even, you must first draw a marking line and attach a metal ruler to it. An incision is made on it with a knife. In the case when the drywall is thin enough, you can replace the construction knife with a regular clerical knife, which is used for paper.

It is convenient to make curly cuts with an electric jigsaw. When working with drywall, it is recommended to purchase files with fine teeth, which are used for metal.

How to cut drywall

There are several useful tips to make your job easier:

  • Drywall is a flexible material. In order not to break it during work, you need to put the sheet on a stable, flat surface.
  • When cutting a large sheet, do it gradually.
  • There must be no moisture in the workplace, otherwise the material will get wet and become unusable.
  • Which side to cut drywall is not so important. However, it is best to cut on the surface with which it will be attached to the wall.
  • When cutting a profile, do not worry about jagged edges. They will subsequently be covered with a sheet of drywall.
  • When working with the material, it should be understood that it can crumble heavily and create dust. Be sure to protect your eyes and respiratory organs.

Cutting in straight lines

First you need to lay drywall on a flat horizontal surface and

mark on both sides of the line along which the cut will be made. After that, a metal ruler is applied to them and pressed by hand. We take a knife in the other hand and draw it along the line several times to make the cut deeper.

Some believe that they can do just fine without a ruler. However, it should not be neglected. It is quite difficult to make an even cut without it. Of course, it is possible, but you will have to spend time to get the edge neat. With a ruler, everything is done much faster.

When the cuts are deep enough, the drywall sheet should be placed on edge and tapped on the back side. Usually, a few weak blows will cause the drywall sheet to break along the line. Now it remains only to cut the cardboard layer with a knife.

Curly cutting

There are situations when you need not a straight cut, but a curved or round one.

For example, if you are making an arch or opening under lighting. In this case, it is best to use a jigsaw.

They need to work slowly, drawing clearly along the marked lines. The saw should be narrow with small teeth. It must run at high speed. With careful cutting, the edge will turn out to be even.

If you do not have a jigsaw, you can use a hacksaw or a construction knife and a hammer. Make deep cuts strictly according to the markup. Lay the drywall on a flat surface with a recess so that it is under the cut hole. Now hit this place with a hammer. After the unnecessary part falls off, turn the drywall over and cut off the excess paper.

Edge processing

When drywall is cut, its edges should be slightly aligned so that they do not have

notches and chips. You can do this with sandpaper. Gently go over all the edges until they are smooth.

The final stage of preparing the material includes its fascia. To do this, cut off a few millimeters of gypsum from each edge (about two-thirds of the thickness of the sheet). The chamfer is removed with a planer or knife at an angle of about 45 degrees.

After installing drywall, all the gaps between the sheets of material must be puttied. When the seams dry, you can start painting the surface or pasting it with wallpaper.

How to cut a profile

Drywall sheets are attached to a special profile. It is made from metal
for maximum structural strength. How to cut a profile for drywall? You can get this job done with:

  • hacksaws for metal;
  • jigsaw;
  • metal scissors.

It is not recommended to use a grinder at home, because it produces a lot of sparks. Metal shears will suffice. They are able to easily cut iron without creating unnecessary debris and chips.

The profile can be cut into small pieces. After fixing the drywall, it will not be visible. The main thing is to screw the profile well to the wall or other surface to ensure the strength of the entire structure.

Working with drywall is quite simple. As a result, it is in high demand for interior decoration premises. Now that you know how drywall is cut, you can change your apartment beyond recognition on your own without spending money on professional finishers.

How and how to cut drywall and make holes in it

From this material you will learn how to cut drywall, in addition, we will look at how to cut drywall and make rectangular and round holes in it. To do this, you will need a few tools and knowledge of the basic methods of how to do it. Plus, we'll show you how to use materials efficiently to reduce waste while still producing superior results. We know from our experience that although the cutting process is not very difficult, it takes patience to master it. An unsatisfactory result may be obtained due to inaccurate measurements, the use of the wrong materials and tools. To learn how to cut drywall the best way, read this article for tips on how to avoid common mistakes.

Preparing and marking

In order to cut drywall, you will need the following:

  • use a knife with a sharp blade only;
  • if it is supposed to fix drywall both on the ceiling and on the walls, then at the beginning it is necessary to sheathe the ceiling, and only then proceed to the walls;
  • if you need to cut drywall along a complex path, then first cut the length and then the width.

Remember that in the process of working and fixing drywall, it is very important to use as many whole boards as possible. So you will reduce the cost of materials, there will be less work, and the sheathing process will go faster. Therefore, you need to carefully measure and study the surface you are working with, and then draw up a plan for using the plates so that they have to be cut as little as possible.

If you need to attach drywall over a large area, we recommend using 3.6m boards instead of 2.5m boards. This will save you time and material.

Step 1. To professionally cut drywall, use quality tools. If the sheets are large (120 cm wide), then it is better to cut them, leaning against the wall at a slight angle. And small sheets (up to 60 cm wide) can be cut on the floor. If this is your first time cutting drywall, then it's best to practice doing it on the floor. First you need to decide which side to cut drywall. To do this, make sure the drywall sheet is facing you. It is on this side that the incision will be made.

If you do not know the best way to cut drywall, then from our experience we can tell you that in most cases, it is best to use a good clerical knife. But sometimes you have to use other tools. For example, a hacksaw for drywall, it is convenient to use for cutting holes of various shapes.

The minimum set of tools you will need when cutting drywall.

Smart advice. If you are cutting drywall by attaching it to the wall, then put a few wooden blocks underneath. This will facilitate the cutting process and protect your fingers from damage.

Step 2. First you need to use a tape measure to determine the size of the plate to be cut. Do this very carefully, otherwise the stove may simply not fit - it will turn out to be either too small or too large. Also make sure that the vertical edges are aligned with the center of the batten, otherwise the slab joints will not be rigid enough. Measure with a tape measure and make a mark in the right place with a pencil. In our example, we want to cut the slab in half, so we make a mark in the middle.

Plasterboard sheet layout.

Smart advice. It is very important to make accurate measurements, otherwise you will spend a lot of time and money to correct errors in the joints. Be especially careful when you work alone.

Step 3 Use a T-square to get the perfect straight cut. If you want to achieve results professional level and you have to cut drywall often and a lot, we advise you to get a large T-square and do not use homemade or handicraft tools.

Move the T-square across the drywall until it reaches the desired mark.

Using a T-square to cut drywall

Cutting drywall sheet

Step 1. Gypsum board consists of two layers of paper, which on both sides cover a thick layer of gypsum. This combination creates a relatively strong construction material which is also fire resistant. Therefore, in order to get an accurate and high-quality cut, it is enough to walk on the plate sharp knife and then break it in this place. To make an incision, run a knife over the drywall sheet from top to bottom several times. To make the right cut, you need to drive the knife confidently, without jerking and exactly along the marked line. When cutting through the paper layer, you need to firmly hold the T-square in one position, otherwise the cut may turn out to be uneven.

The same procedure must be performed if you rarely drywall not on the floor, but leaning against the wall. Holding the T-square down with your foot, run your knife across the drywall a few times from top to bottom. There is no need to cut many times, as you will only dull the blade of the knife.

A sheet with a cut paper base.

As you can see in the picture, the incision should be perfectly even. Otherwise, you will not be able to break the plate evenly. The goal is to completely cut through the paper layer and lightly grab the plaster.

Step 2. Now you need to break the slab along the notch. If you followed the previous steps correctly, then the drywall should break along the notch. Holding the sheet with your feet, simply fold it.

Of course, there are a lot of options for how you make the break itself. It is quite difficult to explain all these procedures in two sentences, but we assure you: in practice, it is very easy to do. The most important thing is to make the right incision. How you break it is not important.

But if you find it difficult to grasp big leaf hands to bend it, then press it down with your knee. If you are not sure that you can cut the slab well, then first practice on scrap sheets.

Breaking plasterboard.

Step 3. After the sheet is broken with a clerical knife, cut the paper layer from the back of the drywall board. If you've cracked the drywall correctly, then you shouldn't have a problem cutting off the paper layer from the back.

We cut a layer of cardboard from the outside.

Step 4. Place the cut plate on the attachment point to see how accurate the cut is. If the cut off plate turned out to be a little larger, then use a rasp to remove excess material. Remember that when working with a rasp, you will make a lot of dust. Therefore, try to make accurate markup.

How to make holes in drywall

Next, we will talk about how to make a hole in drywall. Learning how to drill holes in drywall is very important, as it is often necessary to install new outlets, switches, and other fixtures. In addition, cutting round or rectangular holes is necessary in order to repair damaged areas of drywall. Although cutting holes in drywall is quite simple, it still takes certain tools and some skill to do it professionally. Therefore, we advise you to work with caution and strictly follow our step by step explanation before starting work.

To make a hole in drywall, you need the following:

  • T-square;
  • pencil;
  • tape measure and stationery knife;
  • drill;
  • ring nozzle for a drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • hacksaw for drywall.
  • make accurate measurements for making rectangular holes;
  • be careful not to cut the holes to damage pipes or electrical wires;
  • to cut a hole in the drywall, put on a respirator mask.

Cutting a rectangular hole

Step 1. Determine the place on the drywall sheet where you want to make a hole. If it is planned to install a socket in this hole, then in the required place you need to attach the box from the socket and outline its outline. To do this, use a tape measure to measure the distance from the left side of the plate to the left and right edges of the box. Also measure the distance from the bottom edge of the plate to the extreme top and bottom points of the electrical box. Given these dimensions, use a T-square to mark the location of the hole for the box on the plasterboard.

We mark the sheet and determine the place for the hole.

Step 2. With a drill with a large diameter drill, make 4 holes on the sides of the rectangle. As you can see in the picture, the holes need to be made inside the rectangle and as close as possible to the cut lines.

We drill holes in the drywall under the saw blade of the jigsaw.

Smart advice. You can drill holes not on the sides, but in the corners of the rectangle. The holes must be large enough for the jigsaw blade to pass through.

Step 3. Inserting a jigsaw file into each of the holes, cut a rectangular opening. Do this with great care, making sure that the file goes exactly along the drawn lines.

Cut out a rectangular hole in the drywall.

Smart advice. Wear a respiratory mask to avoid inhaling dust. It is better to make the hole a little small than too big, as the excess can always be removed with a rasp.

Step 4. After you have cut a hole in the drywall, you need to check its suitability. To do this, insert the box from the switch or socket into the hole made to see if everything is well done.

Finished rectangular hole.

Smart advice. You can cut holes in already installed slabs, but there are a few things to consider here. Before starting work, make sure that there are no pipes, wires or other communications in this place.

How to make round holes in drywall

Step 1. First you need to determine how you can cut a hole in drywall. There are several ways to do this. To do this, you can, for example, use a crown, ballerina or a small hacksaw.

A set of bits that can be used to cut holes in drywall.

Before you start making holes, you need to make the appropriate markup. To do this, you need to determine and outline the center of the future hole.

We outline the center of the future hole.

Step 2. Choose a crown required size and fix it in the drill chuck. Now place the core bit in the center of the hole to be cut and start drilling. For a quality hole, we recommend cutting at medium speed and gently pressing on the drill.

Smart advice. Do not press too hard on the drill so that the tip does not get stuck in the cast. To make a hole of high quality, you need to be patient.

Making holes with a hand tool

Method 1. Cut through round hole in drywall, you can use a regular knife. First you need to outline the shape of the future hole. To do this, you can attach a box from an outlet, a switch, or any other round object to a drywall sheet and outline the outline of the future hole. Then the same contour should be marked on the reverse side of the sheet. Both the first and second circuits must match.

We outline the outline of the future hole.

Then, using a knife, you need to completely cut through the cardboard layer. After you have cut through the paper layer on both sides, lightly tap the plaster with a hammer. The hole is ready. Now check if the electrical box is included.

Method 2. If you want to make a hole in an already installed drywall slab, then you need to use a different method. Draw a circle on the drywall by tracing the outline of the switch or socket box with a pencil. Before cutting a hole in drywall, make sure that there are no pipes in this place and electrical wires. Also make sure that the box will be located in a suitable location.

Then, using a drywall saw, cut a hole in the board. In order to make the hole even, punch drywall in one place and, starting from there, start sawing.

Lesson 4

In this article, we will learn how to cut drywall at home. In the previous lesson, we completely made a frame to which drywall can already be attached. But the drywall sheets themselves must first be cut to size. How this is done, we will now understand.

How and how to cut drywall at home

The answer to the question of how to cut drywall at home is very simple - for this we need an ordinary sharp paint knife.

It is highly undesirable to use an electric jigsaw for cutting drywall.

How to cut off a part of a leaf

So, we put a sheet of drywall with the inner (back) side on the floor (table) or stand upright, leaning on the wall, with the inner (back) side to the wall, the outer (front) to ourselves. Using a tape measure and a pencil on the outer (front) side of the drywall, mark the distance to be cut. We make two marks on the top and bottom of the sheet with a pencil:

Then we take the rule ( building level, a flat rail) is applied to the applied marks and mark the line.

It is better to repeat twice.

After we have cut through the paper, we need to break the sheet along the cut made. To do this, take a sheet, turn it over to you inside. We clamp one part of the sheet in left hand, the second (cut off) to the right. Moderate movement right hand on ourselves (you can also help with your knee synchronously) we break the sheet along the cut made:

The sheet broke exactly along the cut line:

The straight cut is ready.

How to cut a sheet

But what to do if drywall sheet you need to make a cut:

or holes, slots, for example, under engineering Communication, pipes. After all, if you also simply draw a knife along each of the three sides of this rectangle, and then start breaking it out, then nothing will come of it. If we apply force, a fracture will occur that is not at all according to the outlines we need. So how to be? Here you need to act differently.

To do this, we take a drywall knife in the vernacular "Fox":

and saw through the two sides:

And we simply cut the third side with a paint knife - only paper:

Lightly hit in place:

It remains just to cut the paper on the other side with a knife:

Below is a link to a video about another drywall knife. I personally did not work with him, but judging by the video, he cuts quite interestingly. In principle, if you work with any tool for the first time, then, of course, you need to adapt:

In this article, we learned how and how to cut drywall at home.

Drywall installation work involves cutting sheets into parts of the desired size. At home, the master does not often face such a task, so it is not advisable to buy professional electric files for cutting HA. When working with large volumes of HA, cutting speed comes first, so for a master who is constantly engaged in installation, the purchase of such equipment is relevant.

A set of tools for working with GC

But in order to make a box for the ceiling or an arched opening in your home, the work on cutting the HA can be done with a conventional tool. general purpose available in the arsenal of any home master. And in order to understand how to cut drywall correctly, you must first figure out what kind of material it is.

In order to easily bend, cut drywall (GC) at home, both in a straight line and in a complex line, you must first understand the structure of this material. Its name fully speaks about it: in fact, it is a sandwich, the core of which consists of a fragile mixture based on gypsum, which is glued on both sides with cardboard. When preparing parts, the properties of drywall are used, due to its material and structure:

  • The core gives the drywall hardness, and the cardboard prevents it from breaking. If the cardboard layer is damaged, the HA easily breaks in this place. Making a continuous straight cut into the cardboard and then breaking the sheet - main principle fast cutting.

Sectional sheet
  • Like any hard porous material, HA is easy to drill and saw. Gypsum can be cut with any hand tool.
  • The porous mass of the filler is able to absorb moisture, while the material reversibly loses its hardness and can be deformed. After giving the required shape, the HA dries up and regains strength. This property is used to obtain solid arched parts with a uniform bend.

GK cutting tools

To work with drywall at home, you will need tools for marking and cutting:

  • Marking is carried out using a tape measure and a meter metal ruler. It is convenient to use a metal guide or carrier profile. With their help, the initial markup of a long sheet is performed. A ruler for drawing a longitudinal line on a 2.5 m long GK sheet will be short.
  • Stationery knife. It is better to use a drywall knife. It is stronger, and when working with it, you can make cuts with considerable effort without the risk of breaking the knife.

Knife - main tool for cutting GC
  • Hacksaw for wood. For sawing HA, a thin pass saw with a minimum set of teeth is suitable. AT construction stores a special narrow file for drywall is sold.
  • Electric jigsaw. This tool is today considered a universal assistant in household, so it is in the arsenal of any master.
  • Electric drill. It is used for drilling straight holes. For large diameters, pen drills or round crowns are used to insert the core of door latches.
  • A planer is used to process the edges of parts after cutting, cutting off irregularities, scraps of cardboard, and chamfering. It is not necessary to buy a drywall planer, a regular carpenter will do.
  • The metal profile is cut off with a grinder or metalwork scissors.
  • Needle roller for making curved parts.

Drywall cutting techniques

Proper marking of the workpiece is the basis for cutting the HA. If the part turns out to be larger than necessary, it can be cut, but the small workpiece will be completely ruined.

The time spent on rechecking the markup will be significantly less than on reworking or trimming parts.

The tool for direct cutting drywall is a knife. After marking two points on the surface of the sheet, a ruler or profile is applied to them. It is not necessary to draw a line. It is necessary to firmly press the guide and with pressure make an even cut of the cardboard. You can cut through several times, since the deeper the groove, the more evenly the drywall will break off. After that, the sheet is broken and all that remains is to cut through the cardboard evenly from the back of the sheet.

Curved lines are cut with a jigsaw.

A hacksaw is used for zigzag lines. Usually these are corner cuts. In this case, one line is cut with a hacksaw, the second with a knife.

Application of a hacksaw

To make blind holes, a circle is marked, a hole is drilled, a jigsaw file is inserted into it, and a sphere of the required shape is cut out in a circle.

If you want to make a rectangular hole in an already installed GK sheet (for an outlet), it is not always possible to use a jigsaw for fear of damaging wall communications. With absence professional tool with an adjustable reach of the cutting element, you will have to work with an ordinary knife, gradually cutting through the sheet to its full thickness.

Production of curved parts

The most time-consuming and lengthy process is the bending of drywall parts. Correctly bending the GK, profile is a task that requires accuracy and patience.

First, a rectangular blank is cut off. To correctly mark the part, using a flexible tape measure, the length of the arch along the bend is measured.

The front coating of drywall is denser than the reverse, therefore, the bending of the workpiece is performed so that the back coating is stretched.

After watching the video, you can understand without words how simple everything is:

Exactly bending a wide part is possible only with the help of a template. It is made from fiberboard, plywood or the same drywall.

One side of the part is rolled with a needle roller with such pressure that the needles penetrate into the thickness of the sheet by 3-5 mm. After that, the surface is moistened with water until softened. This is a long process, and you should not rush. In this case, according to the template, you need to gradually bend the part. After it lies completely in the mold, it is fixed and left to dry.

Bending on a template

For gentle arches with a large radius, where the steepness of the bend is small, wet arching can be dispensed with. Transverse cuts are made on parts with a uniform step, resulting in an accordion. After fixing, such a surface is puttied to hide the bending ribs.

For arched structures bending the profile will not work. To do this, it is cut with scissors in increments of 3-10 cm, depending on the steepness of the bend. Correctly make triangular cuts.

To work with drywall, you can get by with the usual tool that can be found in any home workshop.
