Manufacturing a hitch for attachments to a walk-behind tractor. Cart for walk-behind tractor - we make a reliable trailer ourselves Universal hitch for walk-behind tractor

After purchasing a walk-behind tractor and checking its operating capabilities, the owner wants to supplement this useful car cargo trailer.

Having received one more wheel axle, the body and seat of the walk-behind tractor turns into a universal assistant that can be successfully used all year round.

A walk-behind tractor with a trailer will successfully replace not only a mini-tractor, but also a truck. And if the trailer has a tipper, then you don’t have to swing a shovel, unloading sand or crushed stone, black soil or manure.

A factory trailer for a walk-behind tractor can have a load capacity from 300 kg to one ton and different body sizes. It all depends on technical characteristics walk-behind tractor, so trailer manufacturers adapt their products to light, medium and heavy hand tractors (walk-behind tractors).

Today, therefore, there are many varieties of cargo adapters available for them. The size range of bodies of such trailers is presented in the following options.

For light walk-behind tractors, trailers with a body 1 wide and 0.85-1.15 meters long are usually used. The load capacity of such adapters does not exceed 300 kg. The cost of light carts is around 12 - 15 thousand rubles.

For trolleys designed to work with medium-power walk-behind tractors (4.8-8 hp), the body size is 1.0 x 1.5 m or 1.1 x 1.4 m with a load capacity of 300 to 500 kg. The cost of cargo adapters of this class depends on the configuration and the manufacturing company and can range from 19 to 40 thousand rubles.

For heavy machines with a power of more than 10 hp. use single-axis or two-axis trailer trolleys with a body 1.2 wide and 2 to 3 m long. They are capable of transporting loads weighing from 500 kg to 1 ton. The price of such adapters ranges from 42 to 60 thousand rubles.

The height of the sides of standard walk-behind trailers ranges from 30 to 35 centimeters. For heavy-duty trolleys, frame side guards with a height of 50-60 cm are used.

Trailers with a carrying capacity of more than 350 kilograms are equipped with a mechanical brake. This is required by safety regulations. When moving down a steep slope, you will not be able to extinguish the inertia of a loaded trailer with just the brake of the walk-behind tractor. Therefore, when choosing a trailer for a heavy hand tractor, be sure to pay attention to the presence of this option.

Standard tipper trailer for light and medium walk-behind tractors does not have a lifting hydraulic cylinder. The body is installed in such a way that the center of gravity of the load is on the rotating axis. Such central balancing significantly facilitates the process of manual tipping.

To increase the convenience of loading and unloading, some trailer models, in addition to the rear one, also have two side opening removable sides.

Trailer bodies are most often made of galvanized sheet metal, painted black steel sheet or made of impact-resistant plastic. The first option is the highest quality and most durable, although the most expensive.

Self-production of a trailer for a walk-behind tractor

The design of the cargo adapter for the walk-behind tractor cannot be called extremely complex. If you have an electric welder, an angle grinder and a drill, almost every owner of a hand tractor can make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor with their own hands.

The main structural elements, the manufacture of which will require a drawing or detailed diagram are the frame, carrier and body.

1 — mounting bracket for walk-behind tractor; 2 – rotary console, 3 – carrier; 4 – footrest; 5 — seat (20mm board); 6 – trailer frame; 7 - body side made of 25 mm board; 8 - support beam frames (bar 50×50mm); 9 – fixing bolt of the M8 hinge; 10 – rear hinge unit; 11 - wheel

Studying the design of the trailer for the walk-behind tractor shown in the figure, you will notice that the driver is connected through the swivel assembly and the console to the trailer module of the walk-behind tractor. The second end of the carrier is inserted into the central tube of the frame.

The “pipe-in-pipe” design forms a kind of long hinge. It allows the wheels of the trailer to change their position independently of the wheels of the walk-behind tractor while overcoming holes and bumps. This solution avoids deformation of the trailer structure.

1 - swivel unit; 2 – “drawbar” ( round pipe 60 mm); 3 – footrest frame (angle 25 mm); 4 – stiffeners

The articulated coupling of the walk-behind tractor with the trailer is made using a console - a steel axle. It stands in the rotating block of the carrier on bearings. A flange is welded to the top of the console, with which it is attached to the hitch of the walk-behind tractor.

To strengthen the junction of the drawbar with the body of the rotary unit, you need to use 4 stiffening ribs from a steel strip 4 mm thick.

When making a homemade trailer for a walk-behind tractor, its frame is welded using several types of rolled metal: angle, rectangular and round pipes. The supporting frame must be strong and rigid so that when moving with a full load, its structural elements do not deform.

1 - brace (corner 20 x 20); 2 - seat frame (corner 20×20); 3 — seat posts (corner 40×40); 4.5 - front struts (pipe 40×20); 6 — body frame strapping (angle 40×40); 7, 8 – wheel axle stands (angle 32×32); 9.10 - rear struts (pipe 40x20); 11 - reinforcing cross member (angle 40×40), 12 - central pipe 58×4; 13 - axle (30 mm rod), 14 - gusset (4 mm sheet).

To fix the carrier pipe in the central pipe of the frame, drill a hole through it and insert a bolt with a lock nut and a pin. In this case, you need to cut a long “window” in the central pipe.

In it, the fixing bolt passing through the carrier pipe will be able to move around the axis of the trailer without moving in the longitudinal direction. This is the final operation required to reliable operation the “pipe-in-pipe” hinge, which we described above.

To make a wheel axle, you need to take a high-quality steel rod with a diameter of 30 mm. It is connected to the central pipe of the frame, the platform frame from the corner and the struts by electric welding.

The fixed body can be made from 25 mm boards or its sides can be made from a steel sheet 1.5 mm thick, welded onto vertical posts from a 40x40 mm corner. If there is a need to open the sides, then several hinges need to be welded to the frame, to which the side frame will be attached. It is necessary to weld bolts to the corners of the frame, which will fix the sides in the transport position.

In a properly balanced trailer for a walk-behind tractor, the center of gravity of the load is located closer to the front side and does not extend beyond the axis of rotation of the wheels. This requirement must be taken into account when drawing up a drawing of a homemade structure.

You can use passenger car wheels as trailer wheels by purchasing them complete with hubs. Before installing the wheels on the axle, you need to carefully machine its seats to the inner diameter of the wheel hub bearings and equip them with a lock nut with a locking cotter pin.

The trailer hitch for a walk-behind tractor is an important component of its entire structure. By means of a hitch, almost all available attachments are attached to the motorized equipment, which seriously reduces labor costs when performing agricultural work. The design of this component from different manufacturers may have its own characteristics and differences, however, the most common is the universal U-shaped coupling device.

We will talk about how to independently and competently make and attach it in this publication.

Selecting a hitch

Any trailed or mounted device for motor vehicles, be it a trailer cart, a mower, a hiller, a harrow or any other equipment, is fixed using a hitch. If the base element is not suitable, the owner has a choice - buy a suitable one or make a hitch for the unit with my own hands.

Be that as it may, when deciding which of the mechanism options can best meet the functions performed by the unit, it is necessary to take into account a number of factors, the list of which includes:

  • distinctive features of a cultivator or walk-behind tractor;
  • scope of use of the unit - the duties it performs;
  • equipment that will be integrated with it;
  • loads;
  • need for versatility.

Based on this, it is necessary to carefully familiarize yourself with the most frequently used devices and choose, taking as a basis the properties of what is best suited in this case.

Varieties

When selecting a hitch for the unit, you should take as a basis the to a greater extent relevant element type.

There are several varieties.

  • Single and double– applies if available various models weight It all depends on which ones are practiced and in what numbers.

  • Reinforced– ideal for heavy motor vehicles. Distinctive feature it is that it is more impressive - it is longer and thicker, which allows the auxiliary equipment to sink deeper into the soil.

  • Customizable– which offers the option to change the angle of the shaft, through which you can adjust the level of fixation of attachments and thereby increase work productivity.

  • Universal hitch– involves aggregation with many modifications.

If a coupling device for a motorcycle of the required modification is not commercially available or there are individual requirements for it, creating it on your own will not be difficult, since we are talking about a rather simple mechanism.

Craftsmen, who make most of the “accessories” for motorcycles with their own hands, construct the “pipe-in-pipe” trailer coupling device from a crosspiece, from a cardan and other improvised elements preserved from various devices. The owners of such devices claim that you can create such a node without problems by sharing it on the Internet personal experience and drawings of the coupling device.

How to do it yourself?

When choosing a modification, you need to check the dimensions of the towing device (towbar) of the walk-behind tractor and attachments (harrow, trailer, plow, etc.).

The specialist’s task is to ensure absolute compatibility of components, ease of use and the ability to quickly configure equipment for a specific task.

The main component of the multifunctional hitch is a U-shaped holder. Through the holes on one side, it is fixed to the motor vehicle using pins; on the other side, a rack of the required attachments is attached to the casing of the device.

Required tools, materials and accessories

There is a certain set of tools that are needed to create a coupling device. Basically, everything that is necessary to assemble such elements is available on the farm of everyone who cultivates own plot land.

You will need the following tools:

  • angle grinder;
  • electric drill or drilling machine;
  • measuring instruments: square, tape measure, ruler;
  • welding machine;
  • set of wrenches;
  • fasteners (studs, bolts).

It should be noted that in this situation it is extremely important that the holes that will be drilled into the part coincide exactly with the studs and bolts. A gap in diameter is not needed, because it will reduce the operating period of the trailers and canopies used.

At the same time, during the work, it is important to first make holes in the element smallest diameter(from 5 millimeters), and then drill out with larger drills (up to 12-16 millimeters, in accordance with the diameters of the bolts). This method will speed up and simplify this part of the work, while at the same time allowing you to measure the holes as accurately as possible. To create the frame, you can use a channel of the appropriate size, and if it is missing, you can assemble an element from an iron sheet.

A very practical modification of the adjustable hitch is similar design will make it possible to connect attachments of different generations, classes and brands. Despite the fact that such a design is not in demand at the moment, we must not forget that various devices will gradually appear on the farm, and the possibility of convenient aggregation of each of them will seriously increase the choice, making it possible to proceed only from the necessary ones. functional features equipment.

Blueprints

Assembling a coupling device for motorcycles on our own involves the use of drawing materials. There are quite a lot various options, but it is better to take the most suitable one as a basis and adjust it, taking into account the characteristics of your own equipment.

The drawing should reflect the following elements:

  • 2 U-shaped parts, equal in all characteristics, but with a different number of holes - in the first 6, in the second 8;
  • housing containing 2 threads with diameters M12 and M16 and equipped installation structure for fixing with one of the units;
  • the adjustment element is a handle placed on the body of the element; its structure includes a screw connected to the holder and having a handle for comfort (it is important to calculate the exact direction of the holder - exclusively up or down and so that it does not interfere with the operation of the motorcycle).

Because motorcycles, under any conditions, require pairing with a hitch, you can find out the details of the location of the connection in its present instructions.

Step by step guide

To make a multifunctional connection, you need an extremely flat plane - a special work table. The plan for manufacturing a coupling device for a walk-behind tractor is as follows.

  • Make markings according to the drawing: mark the outlines of the elements on the workpiece.
  • Using an electric drill or drilling machine make holes according to the marks. Make sure they are correct by using a caliper and a pin (bolt) that will be used to fix them. Achieve a suitable hole diameter at which there is no backlash and the fasteners do not jam.
  • Weld the joints. It is preferable to use electric arc welding, in which heating occurs exclusively in the joint areas without any harm to the working properties of the steel.
  • Assemble the part. Connect the holder and channel with bolts. If the design has a setting tool, attach that too.

The fasteners by which the coupling device is attached to the walk-behind tractor through the holes in the units must be of the same quality and strength as the device itself.

Let us recall again that the detail is carried out so that the versatility of the walk-behind tractor is maximized. If you have an ideally suited coupling device, it is possible to comfortably aggregate and long-term effective operation of each suspended or trailed equipment, including: adapter, hiller, harrow, plow, trailer, all kinds of mowers, potato planters and any other devices.

And for the reason that the fixation components on different equipment may differ, which usually makes it difficult for them to interact with the walk-behind tractor, the successful design of the coupling device and the ability to configure it solve this problem.

Installation of attachments on motor vehicles

After assembling the part, the main thing is to connect it correctly. The installation techniques are quite simple, but it is important to follow them. In essence, docking equipment to a walk-behind tractor comes down to a rather simple action: you need to make sure that the holes of the coupling device and the hitch match and secure them with bolts or pins. Radial holes make it possible to adjust the position of the connecting device during operation.

Some owners of small agricultural machinery purchase it, initially counting on the multifunctionality of the unit, others buy it for one specific purpose, and over time they can expand the range of tasks that the walk-behind tractor can do. But in any case, performing most functions on arable or local area is provided by various attachments, which are attached using a part such as a hitch to the walk-behind tractor and, in fact, serves as the key to its versatility.

Often, owners of agricultural implements find that the factory equipment is far from perfect, the coupling design is not suitable for the current needs of the farm, or is simply not reliable enough. Fortunately, there is always the opportunity to equip your walk-behind tractor with a hitch that will provide maximum efficiency devices.

You can make the hitch yourself

Choosing a hitch for a walk-behind tractor

Any mounted or trailed device for a walk-behind tractor, be it a harrow, hiller, mower, trailer cart or any other equipment, is attached using a hitch. If the basic part is not suitable, the owner has a choice - purchase a suitable one or make a hitch for the walk-behind tractor with his own hands. In any case, when deciding which version of the unit can most accurately match the tasks that the unit performs, you need to take into account a number of points, including:

  • features of a walk-behind tractor or cultivator;
  • areas of application of the unit - the functions it performs;
  • equipment that must be aggregated with it;
  • loads;
  • the need for versatility.

Based on this, you should carefully familiarize yourself with the most commonly used designs and guide your choice based on the characteristics of the one that is best suited for your application. in this case.

In this video you will learn more about the hitch:

Kinds

When choosing a hitch for a walk-behind tractor, you should take as a basis the most suitable type details. There are several types:

  • single/double - used if available different options weights depending on which ones are used and in what quantity;
  • reinforced - optimal for heavy units; distinctive feature it is that it is more massive - it has greater thickness and length, which allows additional equipment go deeper into the ground;
  • adjustable - providing the ability to change the angle of the shaft, so you can adjust the level of fastening attachments and thereby increase work efficiency;
  • universal hitch - allowing aggregation with several models.

If the hitch for a walk-behind tractor of the desired design is not on sale or you have some specific requests for it, making it yourself is not so difficult, since we are talking about a fairly simple adaptation. Some craftsmen, who prefer to make many of the “accessories” for the walk-behind tractor with their own hands, make a “pipe-in-pipe” design of the hitch for the walk-behind tractor trailer, making it from a cardan, from a cross, from other improvised parts left over from various mechanisms. Owners of such devices note that making such a unit is not particularly difficult, and share their experience and drawings of a hitch for a walk-behind tractor.

Do-it-yourself hitch for walk-behind tractor

Big advantage homemade device the fact that the owner takes into account his requests and manufactures it based on the inputs he needs: the model of the walk-behind tractor, the load, the parameters of the attachments.

But the first thing that needs to be taken into account is that this unit will in any case bear an increased load, so it is important to pay close attention to the size, design and strength level of all parts of this part. Correctly specified parameters of the device will ensure the most reliable aggregation with the walk-behind tractor, the necessary mobility of the unit and the durability of its use.

When deciding on the design, pay attention to the dimensions of the towbar of your walk-behind tractor and the features of the attachments (those you already have and those you plan to purchase). The primary task is to ensure maximum compatibility of the unit with all necessary mounted and towed devices. Ease of use and the possibility of aggregation with equipment having different parameters are also important.

The main working part, as a rule, has a U-shape and serves as a bracket, which is fixed to the walk-behind tractor through the holes in it. The attachment stand is attached to its other side.

Before assembling the hitch, carefully read the instructions

Required tools and materials

There is a certain set of tools that are needed to make a hitch, but they do not include anything exotic. Usually, everything that is required to assemble such parts is available on the farm of any owner who cultivates his own land plot. The following tools will be required:

  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill or drilling machine, metal drills;
  • measuring instruments (tape measure, ruler, square);
  • keys;
  • fasteners (bolts, studs).

It must be emphasized that in this case it is very important that the holes that you will drill into the part coincide exactly with the bolts and studs - play in the diameter is undesirable, since it will shorten the service life of the attachments and trailers used. At the same time, during the manufacturing process, it makes sense to first make holes in the part with a smaller diameter (from 5 mm), and then expand them with wider drills (up to 12-16 mm, depending on the diameter of the bolts) - this approach will speed up and facilitate this part of the work, at the same time allowing you to align the holes as accurately as possible.

To make the body, you can use a channel of a suitable size, and if this is not available, you can cut the part out of a metal sheet.

The option of an adjustable hitch is very convenient - this design will allow you to attach attachments of different classes, generations and brands. Even if on this moment this design is not relevant, do not forget that over time, different devices, and the possibility of convenient aggregation of any of them will significantly expand the choice, allowing you to proceed only from the desired operating characteristics of the equipment.

Blueprints

Assembling a hitch for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands involves the use of drawings. There are quite a few different options available, but it is optimal to take the most suitable one as a basis and adjust it taking into account the parameters of your equipment. The drawing should show the following details:

  • two U-shaped components, identical in all respects, but with a different number of holes - one has 6, the other has 8;
  • a housing that includes two threads with diameters M12 and M16 and is equipped with a connecting structure for fastening with one of the units;
  • adjustment component - a lever located on the body of the part; its design consists of a screw connected to a bracket and for convenience having a handle; it is important to ensure the correct direction of the bracket - only up or down and in such a way that it does not interfere with the operation of the walk-behind tractor;

Since the unit in any case provides for a connection to the hitch, details of the connection placement can be studied in its standard instructions.

Step-by-step instruction

To make a universal connection, you need the most flat horizontal surface possible - a workbench or work table. The manufacturing diagram for a trailer (hitch) for a walk-behind tractor is as follows:

  1. Make markings in accordance with the drawing: mark the contours of the parts on the workpiece.
  2. Using a drill or drill press, make holes according to the markings. Make sure they are accurate using a caliper and a bolt (stud) that will be used for fastening. Achieve the optimal hole diameter, at which there is no play or jamming of fasteners. Finish the holes with a countersink - this will make it easier further work and will protect you from injury.
  3. Weld the joints. It is best to use electric welding, in which heating occurs only at the joints without much damage to the working qualities of the metal.
  4. Assemble the part. Connect the bracket and channel using bolts. If your design has an adjustment mechanism, fix it too.

Important! The fastening elements with which the hitch is fixed to the walk-behind tractor through the holes in the units must be of the same quality and strength as the part itself.

All elements of this mechanism must be steel

.
Let us remind you once again that the part is manufactured so that the versatility of the walk-behind tractor is maximized. With an optimally matched coupling, convenient aggregation and long-lasting performance are possible. efficient operation any mounted or trailed equipment, including a plow, harrow, hiller, potato planter, different kinds mowers, trailers and any other devices. And since the fastening elements on different equipment may vary, which often complicates their compatibility with the walk-behind tractor, it is the successful design of the hitch and the ability to adjust it that solves this problem.

After assembling the part, it is important to attach it correctly. The installation rules are quite simple, but it is important to adhere to them. Actually connecting the equipment to the walk-behind tractor comes down to a very simple action: you need to align the holes of the hitch and hitch and secure them with bolts or pins. Radial holes allow you to adjust the position of the connecting unit during operation. After installation, you need to tighten the threaded fastening elements of the unit with the walk-behind tractor. After this, the attachments are connected.

After the initial aggregation of devices, final fixation will follow, which must be done immediately before starting work. The adjusting components (screws) should be loosened, find optimal level fixation, then tighten with wrenches. Depending on the design, a removable threaded axle can be installed on the bracket, into which an M16 screw is screwed.

In conclusion, a few more recommendations should be made. To preserve the working qualities of the metal and increase the durability of the part after its assembly, it is advisable to coat it with an anti-corrosion compound or paint for metal.

Given the possibility of adjusting the structure in different ranges, it is possible to install radius grooves and fix them to zero. After starting work, it is necessary to carefully observe the connection during the first meters of movement and, if necessary, make additional adjustments. The presence of an adjustable lever allows you to change the level of fixation and secure attachment for greater or lesser plowing depth.

You can plow the ground with a walk-behind tractor, you can mow grass, and you can use your walk-behind tractor in winter to remove snow. You can also use a walk-behind tractor as a mini tractor, but one of the most common uses is for transporting cargo. But for this you will need a trailer. You can buy a trailer at the store, but not everyone can afford it. Nothing, you can easily make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.

How to make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands

Here we will explain how to make a homemade trailer for a walk-behind tractor, consider its components and drawings that will help you make your trailer.

A trailer for a walk-behind tractor can be considered as a combination of a frame, body, wheels and hitch.
The frame is made from steel pipes rectangular and round sections, fasten them with steel corners using welding machine.

All this is necessary for summer residents, because you will probably use the trailer on the farm, off-road.

For the bottom and sides of the body, you can use professional flooring, sheet metal 1 mm thick, or boards 20 mm thick. Using boards, you need to fasten them together with steel corners, and attach the finished body to the frame with bolts. For ease of loading and unloading, the sides are folding, we will mention this later.

The simplest trailer for a walk-behind tractor :)

Wheel axle and wheels for walk-behind tractor trailer

In order to make a wheel axle, you need to take a steel rod 1.07 m in length. This length of the rod is needed so that the wheels do not protrude beyond the dimensions of our homemade body. Make gussets and corners as steel supports. Using a welding machine, connect the side members and the body of the longitudinal hinge to the steel rod through the corners and gussets. You need to put the bracket axle and earrings on the side members.

Wheels for a homemade trailer can be taken from any vehicle, if, of course, these wheels are the right size. You can easily adapt wheels from a Zhiguli or an SZD motorized stroller. If you use the latter wheels, they already come with hubs and an axle sharpened to the diameter we need.

Also, those who understand technology say that you can easily pick up wheels from a garden wheelbarrow. Their 16-17 inch radius fits our cart (trailer) very well.

How to make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor yourself

How to make a trailer for a walk-behind tractor yourself? Everything is very simple, if, of course, you can distinguish a bracket from an earring and a board from a pipe, it will not be difficult for us to make the frame of the future trailer and connect them together.

The side of the trailer attached to the walk-behind tractor can be made folding only at the back, for the convenience of loading bags, but if you transport bulk cargo, you can make folding sides. Before starting work and assembling the body, frame, wheel axle and hitch, which we will look at later, it is necessary to examine the drawing in order to have an accurate idea of the parameters of our trailer.

Homemade trailers for walk-behind tractors video selection

Previously, we described how and from what materials you can make a homemade trailer for your walk-behind tractor. Now you can see how to do it homemade trailers for walk-behind tractors, a video showing homemade trailers, in order to get an idea of what you will end up with.

Motoblock trailer hub, how to choose

In order for the cart (trailer) to move, you need to attach wheels to it. You can take wheels from any inexpensive car. It was mentioned earlier that you can take wheels from an SZD motorized stroller.

They already come with the hubs we need. You can also buy separately similar wheels or a used rear beam from a VAZ2109, complete with wheels. Nowadays, the rear beam with the VAZ2109 is very often used due to its availability and low cost.

Do-it-yourself trailer hitch for a walk-behind tractor

Essentially, the trailer is connected to the towbar of the walk-behind tractor through the hitch. We will try to explain how to make a hitch that would fit a standard “ear” of a walk-behind tractor, but you should know that different manufacturers walk-behind tractors make different coupling devices on their walk-behind tractors, so you’ll have to think about how to connect your trailer specifically to your unit.

The top side of the hitch is an axis in two bearings around which the reversible unit moves. The anthers cover the bearings, and the space between them is filled with lubricant.

The console is connected to the carrier, which, in turn, is attached to the trailer frame using a tubular longitudinal joint housing. The connection between the carrier and the hinge is ensured by a thrust ring and an M8 bolt. This mount allows you to move effectively on any road. The wheels do not depend on the wheels of the walk-behind tractor when moving.
We provide you with a drawing of the console and carrier:

  • 1 — connecting console;
  • 2 — boots on bearings;
  • 3 — first bearing 36206;
  • 4 - body;
  • 5 — spacer sleeve;
  • 6 — second bearing 36206;
  • 7 — spacer sleeve;
  • 8 — washer;
  • 9 — nut M20x2.5;
  • 10 — oiler;
  • 11 — trailer carrier (drawbar).

The hitch is easy to make. You just need to take a pipe measuring 60x30 mm and attach it with one end to the side members, and the other (the ends of the beams - to the chain mechanism), that is, the console. This way you can make a two-beam carrier.

Preface

The benefits of owning a walk-behind tractor can hardly be overestimated - it helps to cultivate the land and do many other jobs. Equipped with a trailer with a seat, it turns into vehicle, capable of transporting loads weighing up to 1 ton. You can make such a cart for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.

We determine the main characteristics of the trailer - we focus on factory models

The design of the cart for the walk-behind tractor is not super complex. If you have an angle grinder, electric welding and a drill, almost any owner of a manual mini tractor can make a trailer on their own. The main thing is to correctly draw up a drawing or sketch before assembling the cart, and then, strictly according to it, carry out all the work. To do this, you first need to decide on the main characteristics of the trailer: load capacity, dimensions and some others. To simplify this procedure, it is recommended to focus on the factory, industrial production models of walk-behind carts.

Factory trailers are produced with a carrying capacity ranging from 300 kg and up to 1000 kg with bodies different sizes. These parameters depend on which walk-behind tractor the trolley is intended for use with, or, more precisely, on its technical characteristics. In accordance with this, there are 3 main types of trailers: heavy, medium and light manual mini tractors.

With heavy ones, power over 10 hp. Walk-behind tractors, as a rule, use single- or two-axle carts with a body 2–3 m long and 1.2 m wide. Such trailers are designed to transport cargo weighing 500–1000 kg.

For medium hand mini tractors - with power from 4.8 to 10 hp. – single-axle bogies with body sizes of 1.0×1.5 m, 1.1×1.4 and similar are oriented. Their carrying capacity is 300–500 kg.

With a power of up to 4.8 hp, single-axle trailers with a body 0.85–1.15 m long and 1 m wide are usually used. The load capacity of these carts is no more than 300 kg.

The height of the sides of factory standard trolleys for walk-behind tractors is 30–35 cm. Side guards are installed on heavy-duty trailers frame structure, whose height is 50–60 cm.

To make loading and unloading easier, the rear side of the trolleys is foldable and removable. On some models, in addition to the rear one, both side ones can be opened and removed, which increases the convenience of filling the body with cargo and emptying it.

All standard trailers are manufactured as tippers. On models for medium and light walk-behind tractors there is no hydraulic lifting cylinder and this function is implemented through the design of the trolley. The body on the trailer is installed so that its center of gravity and the load located in it is located on the rotary axis aligned with the wheel pair of the trolley. This balancing greatly facilitates manual tipping.

Carts with a lifting capacity of over 350 kg are equipped with a mechanical brake in accordance with safety regulations.

This is due to the fact that when descending a steep slope, it is impossible to extinguish the inertia of movement of a loaded trailer with only the 1st brake of a hand-held mini tractor. Therefore, trolleys must be equipped with their own braking system.

How to properly design a trailer structure

So, in order to avoid repeated recutting of parts, alterations and, as a result, damage to the material during the assembly of the trolley and its endlessly prolonged production, it is necessary to do detailed drawing. To be more precise, there should be several of them: for all trailer components and, moreover, for each of them in several projections - views from different sides. For complex and critical parts, additional separate drawings should be made. The design of all nodes and their elements must be carefully drawn. Each part should be signed: indicate its name and all dimensions.

Based on the finished drawings, it will be possible not only to visualize the volume and scale necessary work, but it’s also easy and quick to make a list of all the tools and materials you’ll need to assemble your trailer yourself. During the manufacture of the trolley, it may turn out that the prepared sketches initially missed some important nuances and/or parts and assemblies necessary for the design are missing. Therefore, before starting work, the drawings should be carefully studied, thinking through and taking into account the following points:

  • what main and auxiliary components will be on the trailer and in what way they will need to be connected - by welding, twisting with bolts and nuts or riveting;
  • how movement and coordination with stationary rotating elements will occur - through a hinge, bushing, bearing or axle;
  • is there a desire to make parking supports;
  • is a tipper needed to mechanically unload the body;
  • and so on.

After this, the drawings may have to be supplemented with some clarifications, details, or missing components and elements that were not originally provided for should be added to them. But having done this, it will be possible to draw up a complete, correct inventory of the necessary materials and tools.

Before you buy necessary materials, you should look at what is available on the site or in the garage. It may well turn out that there will be something suitable for use when assembling a trailer. For example, a frame and other strength and supporting structural elements can be made from any round or profile pipes.

Development of drawings for trolleys with a load capacity of up to 350 kg

This trailer is suitable for any walk-behind tractor. There is no point in attempting to make a more heavy-duty cart with your own hands, since, according to the above safety requirements, you will have to decide on equipping it with your own braking system. To construct or competently use a ready-made one, for example, from a light car, will simply be beyond the capabilities of most people. On the other hand, by and large, making brakes with your own hands is technically quite difficult to achieve required level traffic safety on a walk-behind tractor with a loaded trailer.

The choice of dimensions, body dimensions and the trailer itself primarily depends on the required load capacity. When determining them, one must proceed from the standards for factory trolleys given in Chapter 1. To make your own trailer with a carrying capacity of 350 kg, you can use the drawings that follow. The dimensions of both main and parts can be changed depending on the available materials. These drawings can also be used as clear example how to properly develop the design of a trolley if you plan to assemble another version of it.

The first drawing is general. It has all the main components - body, frame, wheels, carrier - and dimensions.

Then a detailed drawing of the frame, which should be made of rectangular or round steel pipes. They are connected to each other by welding.

Body in this option The trolley is made of boards, the thickness of which is 20 mm. The sides are all solid - they don’t recline.

Driver drawing. The main load is taken by the joint of the rotary unit housing with the drawbar. Therefore, their connection is reinforced by 4 stiffening ribs, which are drawn on the section B–B.

For the rotating unit, as a complex critical element of the trailer, a separate drawing has been developed with detailed detailing of its structure and elements.

If other materials are used in the design of this walk-behind tractor cart, the permissible weight of transported goods may change.

What materials and how can you use to assemble a trailer with your own hands?

The easiest way to weld a frame is from a corner, channels and profile pipe. I-beams and round pipes are also suitable.

A steel rod should be used as the wheel axle. Its diameter must be at least 30 mm, and its length must be at least 1070 mm, but the wheels must not protrude beyond the dimensions of the trailer. The rod is welded to the longitudinal hinge and corner supports of the frame.

The wheels are suitable from some kind of agricultural machinery or motorcycle stroller. The axle will need to be ground to fit the diameter of the bearings in their hubs.

It’s easier to make the body yourself from boards, fastening them at the corners metal corners. We fix it to the frame with bolts. Optimal thickness boards 20 mm. To make loading and unloading easier, it is better to make the sides folding. The underbody can be made from edged boards, but the trailer will be more reliable and durable if you use it for this sheet metal, better thickness 2–3 mm. A car seat is perfect as a seat.

We make the hitch (swivel assembly) of the trolley with our own hands from a piece of steel of suitable size, drilling or machined a hole in it into which the console can easily fit. It is advisable to make the rotary assembly according to the scheme proposed in the above drawing - using bearings of a suitable diameter. Their outer cage is tightly seated in the coupling body or welded to it, and the console is inserted into the inner one without play.
