Wood whistle. The simplest do-it-yourself sheet metal whistle How to make a do-it-yourself wooden whistle

homemade whistle

If you pass or drive with your young son past the willow bushes, do not forget to make a short halt in order to take the opportunity to strengthen your paternal authority. When in front of your son you cut out a real active whistle from a willow stick, showing him how it is done, he will respect you even more. An unsightly homemade whistle will be the pride of your offspring in front of their peers.

If you are a city dweller, you may not know how a wooden whistle is made, so read on.

We need a smooth willow branch with a cross section of about a centimeter. Why the willow branch? But because you can easily remove the bark from a willow wand without damaging it. And this is important, since a single piece of bark will be the body of the whistle. In addition, willow branches are brittle, with a fresh wind under the willow there will always be a bunch of suitable branches, and you will not have to harm a living plant.

We select a branch on which there is a section 5-8 centimeters long with intact and even bark without knots. Kidneys in this area are allowed, they will not interfere with our product.

We cut the branch at one end of the selected section. At its other end, we make an annular incision of sufficient depth, slightly clinging to the wood. We can even remove a narrow (millimeter wide) ring to make sure that the entire bark layer is cut through.

Then lightly tap the bark of the area with a hammer or knife handle over the entire surface. Instead of tapping, we can “roll” a branch. This operation will then make it easier to peel off the bark from the wood. After that, on the branch we make a cutout as in the figure on the right.

Now, with rotational movements, we carefully try to remove the bark without damaging it. We are not in a hurry: if the bark is not removed, we tap it again. She's bound to come out eventually.

From the section of the branch remaining without bark, we cut off a cylinder with a knife along the line of the transverse incision. We cut off a small segment (barrel) from this cylinder. We don’t try to cut absolutely exactly, if it turned out to be a wedge, it’s even better: it will be easier to adjust the sound of the whistle.

We insert the cropped cylinder into its original place, cut up. If the cut turned out to be a wedge, then we put it as a bottleneck to the hole.

It's about to be a whistle! We clamp the open end of the resulting tube with a finger or palm and with sufficient effort blow into it through the cylinder. We hear a distinct whistle. The timbre of the sound on the move may not be very pleasant, but this is fixable: we will adjust the sound.

Having cut off the remaining end of the branch, insert the resulting piece into the open end of our tube and, moving it back and forth, adjust the timbre of the sound. Having picked up the most pleasant timbre, we cut off the protruding part of the piece. The whistle is ready.

Give it to your offspring and warn him to whistle anywhere, but not in the apartment, as the whistle makes a rather loud sound. Let him whistle with his friends in the yard.

While making a whistle, you might have a desire to make a more sophisticated whistling instrument - a pipe. And you can do it! You just need to find a willow branch with a section of even bark 15 centimeters long. The pipe is made using the same technology as the whistle, only the open end of the tube is simply plugged with a wooden plug (which does not move back and forth). On the remaining part of the bark, 3-4 holes are made so that the fingers of the hand can plug them at the same time. By opening one or more holes in turn, you can play simple melodies. Of course, the resulting notes will not correspond to the natural scale, but there will be a semblance of a melody!

When planning an outdoor activity, it's always a good idea to have a whistle in your pocket. Now on sale there are a lot of plastic whistles. They are very good, reliable and light. In remote areas, this is a very good way to call in emergencies.

Six whistle blows one minute apart is an internationally recognized call for help or rescue. However, if one day you really find yourself in a survival situation and encounter willows in the area, you should be able to make a homemade whistle.

For work we need only a small knife and a freshly cut willow branch. The thickness of the branch should be approximately the thickness of your thumb. To work comfortably and safely, the length of the branch should be about 15 cm.

1. Remember, safety comes first! Get into a comfortable sitting position with your elbows resting on your knees. Place a piece of wood between your legs to serve as a cutting table. This position will help avoid serious injury.

2. Make a small diagonal cut at one end of the stick.

3. Now you need to make a vertical transverse incision in the bark.

4. After that, we make another cut in the bark so that both of these cuts form a hole in the bark in the shape of the letter D.

5. It should look like this. Let's make a mark on the wood in the place of the cut in the shape of the letter D. For example, put a cross.

6. Now you need to carefully remove the bark from the branch. To do this, we make a transverse incision along the entire circumference of the branch.

7. Make sure that the bark is well cut everywhere.

8. Now, using another stick, "softly but firmly" tap the entire surface of the branch, over all cuts and cuts, to loosen the bark. Do not hit too hard, so as not to damage the bark, because. we will need it later.

9. With the help of bthumbs, with a sharp twisting movement, try to remove the bark without violating its integrity. This may not be easy. Repeat if it didn't work the first time. If the bark does not give in, soak the branch in warm water for a while.

10. Once the bark begins to move, continue to carefully remove it with a twisting motion until the entire bark exposes the end of the stick.

11. The bark should come off in one piece, without cracking.

12. The next step is to make a cutout in the whistle. We begin to cut in the place marked with a cross.

13. We make a recess for the whistle using a series of small longitudinal cuts.

14. And several transverse cuts.

15. It turns out such a recess.

16. Let's start creating an air gap. We do it with the help of shallow "shaving" movements.

This is now, if you want to give a gift to your child, you just need to walk to the toy store - and here it is, a huge variety of everything that you can imagine, for all ages and tastes.

Our ancestors had it harder. To please the child, often had to do with simple home-made toys. But each of these homemade toys was a truly ingenious invention.

Like it or not, but if you trace the history of the development of any of the most sophisticated modern branded toys, you will certainly be convinced that some ancient “wooden” craft, as simple as it is ingenious, stands at its origins.

Like everything ingenious, ancient toys do not age and can always compete with their most successful descendants.

I remember once at the dacha I made a simple wooden whistle for my little son, which my father taught me to make in early childhood. And you should have seen what line of his friends instantly lined up to me with a request to make them the same. And the place of my little son in the hierarchy of the boyish flock has risen sharply.

So do not neglect the rich experience of ancestors and rely on modern technology. A simple and unpretentious toy that brought joy to many generations of our ancestors is still able to bring happiness to our children. And, believe me, no less happiness than an expensive branded toy from supermarkets.

And to make sure of this, we will now try to make with you the most simple wooden whistle. With my own hands, in the presence of a child. And even let him take a little part in the process. Believe me, for him to watch the process of the birth of a toy will be a real miracle!

So, we need an even willow rod, 7-10 millimeters thick. Why willow? Because it is very easy to remove the bark from a willow wand without damaging it. And this, as we will see later, is very important for us.

In addition, willow is a plant with brittle branches, which means that you do not have to spoil a living plant. It is enough just to take a walk under a willow tree after a fresh breeze to collect a bunch of branches, just the ones we need.

We select a branch with intact and even bark (this is a very important condition), if possible, without knots. Now we need to find on this branch a flat area 4-7 centimeters long. There may be buds in this area (this is common with willow), but in no case should there be any knots.

Now we cut the branch along the border of a flat area. At the other end of the section, we make an annular incision, as shown in Figure 1. The incision should be deep enough and slightly (precisely slightly) cling to the wood. To make sure that the entire layer of bark is really cut through, you can remove a ring 1-2 millimeters thick.

After that, we begin to lightly “tap” the bark with a small hammer in a circle in all places. Instead of a hammer, you can use a knife handle (Figure 2). Instead of tapping, you can also “roll” a branch. This is done with the aim that the bark subsequently peels off the wood more easily.

Fig 2

We make a cutout on the branch, of such a shape as shown in Figure 3. After that, carefully, with rotational movements, we try to remove the bark from the branch without damaging it. You should not rush, if the bark is not removed, you need to knock on it again and try again. In the end, it will definitely be removed (Figure 4).

Fig 3

Fig 4

Now, carefully cut off the “round” with a knife from the branch left without bark just along the line of our cutout, as this is done in Figure 5.

Figure 5

Then we cut off the round barrel (Figure 6).

Fig 6

Do not try to cut it absolutely straight, it will not work anyway. Yes, we don't really need it. If the cut turns out to be wedge-shaped, as in our drawing - this is only for the better - it will be easier to adjust the sound.

We insert the cut circle into its original place, cut up. If the cut turned out to be oblique, then we put it as a bottleneck to the hole (Figures 7 and 8).

Fig 7

Figure 8

Now, attention. We clamp the open end of the resulting tube and blow it strongly enough from the side of the round. The result will be a distinct whistle. True, its timbre may not be very beautiful.

Don't worry, we'll fix it now.

We cut off the remaining end of the stick, insert it into the open end of the tube, and moving the stick back and forth we select the most pleasant timbre of the whistle (Figure 9). Then we cut off the protruding part of the branch and the whistle is ready! (picture 10)

Figure 10

Attention! Our whistle gives a rather loud whistle. Therefore, the best place for exercise is a summer house or a country house, but not a city apartment.

And finally, one piece of advice. If you manage to find a willow twig with a fairly long section of even bark, 10-15 centimeters, then instead of a whistle you can make a simple home-made pipe. It is made in the same way as a whistle, but instead of choosing the timbre of the sound, just plug the open end with a wooden cork, and in the remaining space, make 3-4 holes in the bark so that they can be plugged with your fingers at the same time. By opening one or another hole in turn, we can reproduce the simplest melodies. Of course, our notes will not correspond to the natural scale, but we do not need it. The main thing is that the melody is pleasant.

The whistle is a simple, but so funny and fun children's toy! And if desired, it is quite possible to do it yourself.

How to make a whistle?

How can you make a whistle with your own hands? We offer several interesting ways.

Method one

You can make a simple but ringing whistle from wood. Here's what's required:

  • an even and neat branch of linden or willow (optimal thickness is about 1.2-1.5 cm);
  • sharp knife;
  • ruler.

The manufacturing process is quite simple:

  1. Cut a piece from the branch at least 10-12 cm long (a little more is possible).
  2. Step back from one edge about five to seven millimeters and make a circular shallow incision along the entire girth with a knife. Remove the bark from the edge.
  3. From the other end you need to make an oblique cut. On the same side, measure two or three centimeters and make another oblique cut, which will go to a depth of about a quarter of the twig. Next, make a straight incision deep into and remove the excess.
  4. Now with a small hammer or knife handle on all sides, gently, but not very weakly, tap the entire workpiece. At this point, the bark should separate from the wood, which is what you want. Do not tear the bark, you will need it later.
  5. Now, from the top of the edge with an oblique cut (where the sharp corner is), cut off a piece of rod about two to three millimeters thick.
  6. Next, place the wood back into the bark. The left hole will make a whistle when blown into the air.

If desired, the finished whistle can be painted, then it will definitely become a favorite bright toy of the child.

Method two

A very original whistle will turn out from an ordinary aluminum can. In addition to it, you will need sharp scissors and a tape measure.

Instruction:

  1. Cut off the bottom of the jar, and then cut out the side of the jar by making a longitudinal cut and separating the top.
  2. From the wall it is necessary to cut off a strip having a width of about 1-1.5 millimeters.
  3. Bend one edge of the cut strip into a ring with a diameter of about 15-17 mm.
  4. Bend the free edge near the ring, measure 25-30 millimeters from it. The remaining segment, if necessary, must be shortened to four centimeters.
  5. Wrap the edge of the first part with a free strip, slide it to the ring. Next, move this part apart with scissors or a thin knife to make a whistle nozzle.
  6. The product is ready. And its side parts will be your thumb and forefinger, with which you need to close the sections of the ring.

Method three

Using the origami technique, you can make an interesting paper whistle. You will also need a ruler with a pencil, scissors.

Description:

  1. For manufacturing, you will need a diagram, which is presented below. Cut out a piece of paper 6 cm wide and 16 cm long. Divide it into 24 equal squares with a side equal to two centimeters. There will be three such squares in width, and eight in length.
  2. Now cut off five millimeters from the bottom edge.
  3. Next, start folding the paper in accordance with the attached diagram.

If you do not understand the scheme, you can watch a detailed video.

Method four

A pen is sure to be found in every home, and you can also make a ringing whistle from it. Here's what you need for this:

  • the base of a sufficiently wide handle (for example, with several rods);
  • stationery knife;
  • ruler;
  • plasticine;
  • sandpaper.

Manufacturing:

  1. One end of the handle must be cut diagonally using a clerical knife.
  2. Next, measure about three to five centimeters from the oblique cut, make an oblique cut in the body, which will go halfway deep. Above the end of this cut, start cutting the body straight, remove the excess part.
  3. Treat the oblique cut with sandpaper so that it does not hurt the lips.
  4. Close the other end with plasticine.
  5. Try your whistle.

Tip: the thicker the handle you take, the louder and more sonorous the sound will be.

If the child requires a whistle, or it is needed for other purposes, then you can make it yourself.

We will now try to make with you the most simple homemade wooden whistle. With our own hands, in the presence of the child, and even let him take a little part in the process. Believe me, for him to watch the process of the birth of a toy will be a real miracle!
