How to choose the best durable waterproof laminate. How to choose laminate: tips and mistakes. How to turn regular laminate into waterproof

In all the variety of floor coverings, laminate stands out with its moisture-proof and water-resistant properties. If at first glance it seems that these are one and the same thing, then upon closer study some differences in their structure and functions become clear.

These floor coverings are suitable for installation in any room and environment. This high-tech finishing material has a high wear resistance class and excellent performance characteristics.

This laminate will be an excellent solution for installation in the kitchen, while creating an atmosphere of comfort and coziness in the home.

Moisture-resistant laminate will last a long time in high humidity conditions. It will be a good alternative to ceramic tiles in a bathroom or shower.

Its surface will withstand heavy loads with dignity, while maintaining its original appearance. Due to its density, moisture-resistant laminate will become a reliable sound insulator and provide protection from damage caused by objects falling on the floor.

The components included in the coating protect the laminate from swelling when exposed to liquid. This is the most important advantage of this flooring.

Moisture-resistant laminate

For the production of moisture-resistant laminate, it is used particle board, as a base (HDF board). The figure shows that main plate has a green color. For better moisture protection, wax treatment is applied to each joint, including locks.

  • A - wear-resistant coating;
  • B - decorative layer;
  • C - moisture-resistant HDF board;
  • D - protective moisture-resistant layer

This ensures complete exclusion of moisture penetration into the laminate board. In addition, the laminate is impregnated with an antibacterial composition, which does not allow mold and various bacteria to multiply.

Waterproof laminate

This is where you can understand the main differences between moisture and waterproof laminate flooring. Waterproof laminate can withstand not only high humidity in the air, but also liquid spilled on the floor.

Important! He owes these results latest technology pressing slabs on specialized equipment under high pressure.

To achieve this effect, laminate panels are treated with heated wax. The next layer is a water-repellent film. The result is a board with absolutely sealed connections between parts (joints).

The polymer film increases the wear resistance of the laminate and protects it from scratches.

Selecting and installing laminate flooring with special properties

Selection of material:

  • In order not to buy a regular laminate when purchasing, it is important to carefully read the product description on the packaging. It must necessarily contain the word “ aqua ». The label must also contain special markings indicating the identity of the floor covering. Icons in the form of an umbrella in the rain or a tap with a drop of water will help you choose a moisture- and water-resistant laminate.
  • An important characteristic that shows the strength of the future coating is the degree of load that the floor must withstand.
  • Therefore, you need to opt for laminate of class 32 and higher. It is necessary to choose only products from well-known and time-tested manufacturers,
  • whose technologies keep up with the times in order to obtain a guaranteed reliable floor. For example, we can say that class 32 laminate from a well-known German brand is often better in quality than class 33 laminate from domestic or Chinese manufacturers. .

  • According to many experts, a laminate with a waterproof coating of the highest reliability class cannot always meet the buyer’s expectations.
  • All this happens because such a class 34 laminate costs an order of magnitude higher than its lower counterparts, and such coating is intended for use in commercial establishments
  • In addition to all of the above, it is necessary to take into account the density of the load-bearing HDF board. Its indicator and the degree of resistance to liquid influence are directly proportional to each other, i.e. the higher the density, the higher the stability.

Another important criterion is the swelling coefficient of the material. This is done using a special test, during which the laminate board is immersed in water for a day. The norm for this coefficient is no more than 18%. There is one compromise option if you do the repairs yourself. Initially, the flooring is installed from a cheaper laminate. Then, after a few years, it is replaced with a high-quality and moisture-resistant coating.

The length of the factory warranty is also important. Many manufacturers are so confident in the quality of their products that they claim a service life exceeding 25 years.

It is necessary to carefully inspect the locks. The panels must be firmly attached to each other, without gaps. To avoid damaging the boards during the inspection, you need to study the brief instructions in pictures, which clearly show the entire procedure.

Laminate flooring tends to become very slippery if it gets wet. To avoid this being an inconvenience, it is better to choose options with a textured or rough surface for the bathroom and kitchen.

Some rules for laying waterproof laminate

  1. In the main part, the technology for laying waterproof laminate is the same as for conventional coating. Laminate panels are laid on a well-leveled surface on top of the selected substrate.
  2. Each laminate board should fit snugly to the base and not sag.
  3. During the installation process, you can use a sealant. It is applied to the locks of the laminate. It serves as additional protection against moisture penetration deep into the coating through the joints. But disassembling such a floor without damage will be much more difficult.

When purchasing laminate flooring, you should definitely remember about the necessary reserve of material. This is especially true for rooms with complex geometry. The reserve is usually 5-10% of the total volume.

During installation, it is important to always consult the manufacturer's instructions, which often provide useful installation tips.

In conclusion of the article

The video will help you understand the issue better self-installation laminate It shows everything clearly and in detail. As a result, it will be possible to begin the preparation and actual installation of the floor covering, which is not only reliable, but also resistant to moisture.

The kitchen is an area of high humidity and traffic. Therefore, laying a regular laminate on the kitchen floor is clearly not the most best idea. Large manufacturers of flooring have long been offering the use of a special coating in the kitchen, which is commonly called moisture-resistant laminate.

How does moisture-resistant laminate for the kitchen differ from ordinary laminate, how to choose a high-quality moisture-resistant floor covering, how much does a good one cost? kitchen laminate, read our review.

Laminate is valued for its beautiful appearance, but this coating has one significant drawback. He is afraid of water. The reason is simple: this coating is essentially a multi-layer “sandwich” of fiberboard(HDF boards), a decorative paper layer with a wood, stone or tile pattern, and a protective transparent film.

If you fill a laminate floor with water and leave it for a while, the laminate quickly swells, swells, loses its appearance and quickly becomes unusable.

Moisture-resistant laminate resists moisture much longer. Of course, it will not become water resistant. But it is quite capable of withstanding high humidity and is perfect for use in the kitchen.

How is moisture-resistant laminate different from regular laminate?

To increase the moisture resistance of a laminated floor, flooring manufacturers have come up with the idea of using a more durable HDF board as a base, which has an increased density and absorbs moisture much less.

Another weak point of a laminated floor is the joints between the panels. If moisture gets there, the laminate begins to get wet from the inside. The internal structure of the coating is disrupted and it becomes deformed. Even after complete drying, the laminate will no longer look the same as before.

Special treatment and waterproofing of joints after laying with a special mastic helps prevent moisture from getting inside. In addition, flooring manufacturers treat the sides and locks with special wax or silicone-based compounds. This is another feature of moisture-resistant laminate, which significantly extends its service life.

Also used is more durable upper layer, protecting the laminate from moisture and other negative influences. To strengthen it, special impregnations are used, for example, with microscopic particles of corundum.

Moisture-resistant and waterproof laminate - what are the differences?

These two coatings are often confused even by sellers construction stores. Many people believe that these are the same floor covering. But they have one main difference - in a real waterproof laminate, instead of an HDF board, a PVC base is used. Unlike fiberboard, the plastic base does not absorb water at all.

However, many craftsmen claim that under normal conditions you can safely use high-quality moisture-resistant laminate for the kitchen, and this will be quite enough.

7 rules for choosing moisture-resistant laminate

Moisture-resistant laminated coatings are offered today by all major manufacturers. How to choose a truly high-quality coating?

  1. The word aqua is often present in the description of a moisture-resistant coating. For example, Aqua-Protect (Witex) or Aqua Resist (Alloc). The markings on laminate packaging usually show a faucet with a drop, an umbrella with a drop, and similar symbols that help you understand which laminate is moisture resistant.
  2. A popular criterion for assessing the quality of a coating is the load class. Choose a laminate of at least class 32. The best option for the kitchen it is considered class 33. It is not only more durable and wear-resistant than coating grades 31 and 32. Many buyers note that the moisture resistance of class 33 laminate is noticeably higher than that of its “younger” brothers.
    Purchasing class 34 laminate for home use, according to many experts, is not always justified. First of all, it is intended for commercial premises, and it is more expensive than coatings of other classes. However, if funds allow, it can be placed in the kitchen, where the floor is constantly under increased load.
  3. The strength and durability of laminate often depends on the manufacturer. Experienced craftsmen claim that a German laminated board of class 32 may be better in quality than Russian or Chinese laminate 33 classes.

  4. To understand which laminate of similar types is better, look at the density of the supporting HDF board: the higher it is, the stronger the coating and the less resistant to moisture. Another important indicator is the swelling coefficient. It is determined using tests when the laminate is kept in water for 24 hours. The approximate norm for this indicator is 18%. The lower it is, the more moisture resistant the laminate is.
  5. Prices for moisture-resistant collections are noticeably higher than for regular laminate. And this is justified.
    The more expensive the coating, the better its characteristics. It’s definitely not worth saving on quality by buying cheap laminate from unknown brands for your kitchen. Expensive laminate from a well-known manufacturer will serve you for many years.
    A compromise option (inconvenient, but sometimes justified) is to first install an economy-class laminate, and after a few years replace it with a more durable and high-quality moisture-resistant one. Good styling modern laminate with locks - the process is quick, relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive.
  6. Pay attention to the warranty period. The best laminate manufacturers offer a 25-50 year warranty.
  7. If you want to buy a laminate that is not afraid of water, be sure to look at the connecting locks. Ideally, they should firmly fix the panels to each other without gaps. If the locking mechanism is good, after installation there will be practically no gaps between the boards, and moisture will have no chance of getting into the joints.
  8. Laminate is a rather slippery floor covering. Especially when water gets on it. To avoid accidentally slipping in the kitchen, choose flooring not with a smooth surface, but with a slightly textured structured surface.

It is important that when laying moisture-resistant laminate there are no gaps. Good leveling of the floor before installation is a mandatory step. One more point: experienced craftsmen recommend placing it under the laminate. good substrate, for example, cork. If these conditions are met, the laminate will not creak and sag under your feet over time.

Manufacturers and collections of moisture-resistant laminate

Let us mention only some of the most large manufacturers laminate flooring, the range of which includes collections with moisture-resistant properties.

The most famous on Russian market brands: Alloc, Witex, Pergo, Kronospan, Tarkett, Classen, Quick-Step.

Laminate directly from Europe, made in Norway, Sweden, Germany or Belgium, enjoys a good reputation. It is considered to be of higher quality and more durable. Many buyers claim in reviews that such laminate lasts longer, is less scratched and can withstand even significant “floods” and “floods”.

However, laminated coatings Russian production more affordable. Many well-known European brands have been producing their products at their Russian factories for a long time. Therefore, pay attention not only to the brand, but also to the address indicated on the package.

Prices

Moisture-resistant laminate in economy class format costs in online stores from 500 rubles per square meter. The price for European-made coatings, as a rule, starts from 1,300 rubles per square meter.

In the comments to this article you can leave reviews about moisture-resistant laminate. Is this flooring really as good as the manufacturers claim? Share your experience!

Provide for the use of laminate as a floor covering. This is more than understandable, given the impressive list of advantages that this material has. These include, in particular, its excellent aesthetics, strength, reliability and durability.

Of course, different types of laminates have different characteristics. Thus, products of class 31 are quite “delicate” and are used mainly in homes. Moreover, in those rooms where traffic is quite low (bedroom or office, for example). Class 32 laminate can be used even for finishing small offices. Classes 33 and 34 are considered the most durable and reliable.

As for the moisture-resistant properties of the product in question, everything is not so simple here. Manufacturers often assure that their products are not afraid of moisture. Should we believe such promises, since many consumers have seen from their own experience the harmful effects of liquid on laminate slabs?

In fact, it should be understood that there are a huge number of ways to protect the floor from destruction by moisture.

The top layer of the laminated board is not afraid of it. Another thing is that if water gets into the joints of the lock joint (and it is one of the most popular today), problems can occur. Often in this place the board swells and swells. Such damage is visible even to the naked eye. Of course, if you remove the liquid from the floor in time, this will not happen. That is why many happy owners of the coating in question react very sharply to spilled tea or “pranks” of animals.

At the same time, technology does not stand still. Today, the construction of houses from timber, logs and other wooden materials It’s no coincidence that it’s so common. There are a huge number of special impregnations that can significantly increase the resistance of wood to moisture. Laminate manufacturers also use similar materials in their work.

Some of them cover the joints of the boards special compounds, others use them to process the base of the board. Another way to increase the moisture-resistant characteristics of the floor is to use a special glue when installing it. Of course, in this case we're talking about not about the lock method, but about the glue method.

But all this applies to ordinary laminate, which has increased moisture-resistant properties. In addition, there are also so-called waterproof products that can be used in rooms where exposure to liquid is not accidental, but regular. For example, in the pool, sauna, bathroom and kitchen.

Laminate is universal look flooring found everywhere. Shopping centers, apartments, offices, brick and wooden houses often have just such a finish.

And, if you choose the material wisely and responsibly, it will serve its owner faithfully for many years. Even under difficult operating conditions.

Does laminate flooring deteriorate from exposure to water?

When choosing flooring for the kitchen, residents of multi-storey buildings begin to think about the fact that sometimes small troubles related to water happen. Either the friendly neighbors above will begin to flood, then over time the hose of the sink mixer will burst, or a saucepan or kettle with hot water. And as you understand, all this will be reflected in the flooring. Of course, you want the floor in the kitchen to look presentable, and for this you can offer many materials, for example:

  • waterproof special from the category of waterproof;
  • linoleum;
  • ceramic tiles;

All these materials will look great on the kitchen floor, since the range, colors and manufacturers are widely represented on modern market building materials. But there are too many complaints about linoleum. Firstly, he is faster than others flooring materials, fading, fails. In addition, it perfectly absorbs fat and other liquids.

Secondly, after flooding, linoleum swells, and there is no way to restore it to its previous form. Parquet also has poor resistance to water and other liquids, so it is best not to install it in the kitchen. Ceramic tiles would be ideal option for the kitchen, but it belongs to the category of cold materials, moreover, dropped dishes usually break immediately, which most often upsets the owner of the house.

Laminate brands that are not afraid of water

Waterproof laminate is practically not afraid of moisture

So we brought the conversation to the point that better than laminate Today you can’t find anything to cover the floor in the kitchen. But the kitchen is a very capricious room in terms of high traffic, heavy loads on the floors and the constant presence of water and humidity. What can laminate manufacturers offer today? They offer three brands of this flooring material that can withstand water.

Moisture-resistant laminate

The first brand is a moisture-resistant laminate. Manufacturers tried to add components to the composition of this type that could increase the unique abilities of the material regarding the effects of liquids on it. In addition, the locks of this product are treated with hot wax. During the installation process, the wax fills all the joints and gaps that remain in the locking system.

This is a kind of sealant that does not allow water to penetrate under the laminate, leaving its base always dry. But it is the foundation that first of all suffers from water falling on it.

Waterproof laminate

The second brand is a waterproof laminate. How does it differ from its moisture-resistant brother? And there is only one difference. This brand can be completely immersed in water and does not change its properties for six hours. Only then can the waterproof material begin to absorb moisture or water. This is the indicator. New production technologies help increase the resistance of such material. Hot wax is also used here, but the methods of applying it have been changed, and the number of layers has also been increased. By the way, waterproof laminate can be installed not only in the kitchen. It will feel great even in the bathroom.

Today, a completely new type of product has begun to appear on the market, which is not afraid not only cold water, but also hot. This is a breakthrough in the modern production of flooring materials, especially laminate. In addition, such plates are made using a completely unique technology. Currently on the market this type of laminate represents domestic manufacturer with its brand AQUAPOL.

If moisture gets on the laminate, be sure to wipe it with a dry cloth.

This type has a number of excellent properties and qualities:

  • Firstly, it is thinner - its thickness is only 3.8 millimeters. Compared to the traditional one which lies in the range of 8-12 millimeters.
  • Secondly, as mentioned above, this laminate is not afraid of hot water.
  • Thirdly, when conducting installation work no backing needed.
  • Fourthly, AQUAPOL can be laid on any surface. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of the new material. It costs, however, a little more.

So, after everything that was said above, you will have to decide on the choice of material. But, as you can see, there is a choice.

With the advent of moisture-resistant and water-resistant types of laminate on the market, the scope of application of laminate flooring and, as a result, its popularity has greatly expanded. However, at the same time, the choice of material has become more complicated. The situation is aggravated by the fact that most buyers do not know the difference between them. Many believe that this is the same coating that is impervious to water. Having chosen a moisture-resistant laminate for the bathroom, buyers then wonder why it almost immediately begins to lose its aesthetic qualities. Actually it's two different types material, and scope of application (as well as technical properties) they are quite different.

When purchasing flooring for a wet room, you first need to decide whether you need a waterproof or moisture-resistant laminate. Let's try to figure out which coating is simply not afraid of dampness, and which is completely impervious to moisture. But first let's answer the question...

How is moisture-resistant laminate different from regular laminate?

The main difference between moisture-resistant laminate and conventional laminate is the production technology, which allows you to create a material with increased resistance to moisture and dampness. Overall, it is not very different from the production method of conventional laminated boards.

To improve its moisture-resistant properties, the product is equipped with a high-density HDF board impregnated with a special water-repellent composition. Received load-bearing part boards absorb moisture much less than standard coating. In addition, the top protective layer can be added waterproofing film. After pressing, it is not visible at all, and this does not in any way affect the decorative properties of the material.

Additionally, the panels are treated with an antiseptic compound that prevents the formation of fungi and other microorganisms on the surface of the product. The side and outer parts of the waterproof laminate are coated with resin or wax impregnations to improve the water-repellent qualities of the material.

Thus, the introduction of certain features into the production technology related to the raw materials and equipment used made it possible to produce a laminate with the required moisture resistance.

After laying the coating, many installers additionally treat all joints between the panels with water-repellent mastic. The resulting moisture-resistant laminate compound has increased waterproofing properties.

All these measures together increase the resistance of the coating to moisture. This coating is excellent for use in the kitchen or hallway, where there is periodic contact with water and high humidity.

However, moisture-resistant laminate is not suitable for installation in bathrooms, saunas, verandas, unheated rooms and other similar rooms with the constant presence of water and temperature changes. This requires the use of a waterproof coating.

Waterproof laminate, as opposed to moisture resistant, is a product that « not afraid of water » V literally words. This is due to the fact that the base of the material is made of polyvinyl chloride (plastic or just vinyl), which is completely inert to water in any form. The panels repel water, allowing it to evaporate naturally. The structure of the product does not deform even with prolonged contact with moisture, for example, in a bathhouse or on a veranda, where precipitation (rain, snow) and temperature changes are possible.

When testing, some manufacturers immerse products in water for several days, which does not affect their technical properties.

Moisture-resistant and waterproof laminate: similarities and differences

Similarities:

  • Identical installation technology (using a locking connection);
  • Effective protection against water droplets, vapors and moisture;
  • High sound and thermal insulation characteristics laminate (just like a regular laminated coating).

Differences:

  • The waterproof laminate is based on a PVC board, the moisture-resistant laminate is based on wood fiber;
  • Moisture resistance is higher for laminate with a plastic base;
  • Moisture-resistant material is more affordable. However, this should not be a reason for purchase: why buy such a coating for a bath if it is not intended for these purposes at all!?

Main classes

There are 7 main classes of material: 21, 22, 23, 31, 32, 33 and 34. The first digit in the class number indicates the group of coating loads that can withstand:

  • household premises – 2;
  • commercial premises – 3.

Household classes have lost their popularity, and it is almost impossible to find them in a store.

The higher the second digit in the class, the higher the wear resistance of the coating.

You can read more about the classes of laminated coatings in the article “What is a laminate class?”

This classification, in accordance with GOST, is valid for both conventional coatings and moisture-proof ones. The class does not affect the moisture resistance of the laminate in any way. Models of laminated coating with increased protective properties against water exposure can belong to any commercial class.

IN last years Class 43 laminate flooring appeared on the market. It is not included in the official classification according to GOST 32304-2013. However, in this way manufacturers are trying to show increased operational properties of its product, in particular the water resistance of the laminate.

8 rules for choosing moisture-resistant laminate

  1. Determine the humidity level of the room in which you plan to lay the flooring. For a kitchen, corridor or hallway, it is enough to use a moisture-resistant laminate. For more humid rooms (bathroom, bathhouse, sauna) and rooms with frequent temperature changes (veranda, unheated room in the house) you should choose a waterproof coating.
  2. When purchasing, you need to pay attention to the product labeling. The box of the material usually contains the word “aqua” or “water resist”, which means the coating is resistant (to a certain extent) to moisture. Pictograms of a tap, umbrella, or water drops may also be present.
  3. Correctly determine the required material class. This is an important parameter, since it determines how wear-resistant the coating is, that is, in which rooms it is recommended to be used. For the kitchen and hallway, class 33 is suitable; for other premises it is advisable to choose a class of at least 32. You should not overpay for class 34, as it is more relevant for industrial and commercial premises with high traffic. For a bath or sauna, choose class 43 - waterproof PVC-based products.
  4. To choose a laminate with good moisture resistance, pay attention to:
    • density value of the supporting HDF board: the higher it is, the more durable the coating and less susceptible to moisture;
    • swelling coefficient - the degree of decomposition of the material when immersed in water for 24 hours (standard indicator is 18%, if it is less, the coating is more moisture resistant).
  5. The cost of moisture-resistant products is higher than conventional coatings. But in most cases, it is more advisable to buy such a coating, since it has better characteristics and will last longer.
  6. Product warranty. The manufacturer gives a guarantee of 25-30 years or even a lifetime for a good moisture-resistant laminate.
  7. Pay attention to the quality of connecting locks. They must ensure that the panels fit tightly together, which is one of the main factors in the effectiveness of waterproof panels, otherwise water will get into the joints, destroying the structure from the inside.
  8. Products with a smooth surface are not the best option for constant use. You can slip on them, especially if there is water on the surface. A more practical solution is an option with a relief or structured surface.

Rules for laying moisture-resistant laminate

If you do not have experience in laying such flooring, this does not mean that you need to contact specialists in specialized companies. The choice, of course, is yours, but you can do all the work yourself. The technology for laying moisture-resistant or waterproof laminate is no different from installing conventional laminated coverings.

Required tool:

  • Pencil and ruler-corner;
  • Electric jigsaw or circular saw;
  • Hammer;
  • Doboynik;
  • Stationery knife;
  • Roulette;
  • Scotch.

Some collections do not have a bottom soundproofing layer. In this case, before starting installation, you need to cover the floor with roll sound insulation (to prevent the material from moving, you need to tape the joints with tape).

Installation is carried out on a pre-leveled floor. The orientation of the panels should be parallel to the light flows coming from the window:

  • First, the left front (farthest from the entrance to the room) corner is laid;
  • The first row of panels is installed in such a way that the space from the tiles to the walls is at least 8 mm. To maintain a constant distance, wedges can be installed.
  • The second row is laid with an offset of the transverse joints by 30-60 cm. Fastening of the lock joints is carried out in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations (look on the box) depending on the type of lock. You need to try to ensure that there are no visible gaps at the joints. This can be achieved by tapping the panels together.
  • After installation, the wedges are removed, and the gaps to the wall are masked with plinths. In this case, technological gaps must remain so that the coating does not deform during thermal expansion.
  • Next, you can use water-repellent grout (putty) for the laminate, which is used to treat all the joints of the panels. This significantly increases the moisture resistance of the laminate and its durability.

Manufacturers of moisture-resistant laminate

Most modern manufacturers (domestic and foreign) have collections of moisture-resistant laminate. Among them are the following brands: Alloc, Classen, Kronospan, Pergo, Quick-Step, Tarkett, Witex, etc.

If we talk about waterproof laminate, then best manufacturers are located in Germany, Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden) and Belgium.

What is the price?

The cost of flooring plays an important role in the choice. On the one hand, if you are going to buy laminated panels, then you are ready for higher prices compared, for example, with linoleum. On the other hand, the price of waterproof laminate is significantly higher than regular laminate.

Moisture-resistant laminate in the budget category can be purchased at a price of 500 rubles/sq. m. Usually these are domestically produced products, which differ in different levels of quality, but on average are of lower quality than their foreign counterparts. Products from European companies are more expensive.

Prices for waterproof plastic laminate start from 1000 rubles per square meter.

Be careful when purchasing: sellers often indicate that the material is waterproof, although in reality it is just a moisture-resistant laminate. But now you already know how to distinguish one from the other.

Conclusion

To make a high-quality and high-quality laminated floor in rooms with high humidity, you should focus on three fundamental factors:

  1. accurately determine the level of humidity in the room;
  2. choose the right type of coating with necessary and sufficient protection from water;
  3. carry out installation of the coating in compliance with all norms and regulations.

Even inexpensive coating can last quite a long time if it is suitable for the space and installed correctly. If you doubt your abilities, it is better to entrust the work to specialists or at least learn the intricacies of the process from professionals.

Just a couple of years ago it was impossible to imagine laminate flooring being installed in a bathroom or in a swimming pool. It seems that the tandem of the wood from which this coating is made and the water that inevitably gets on the floor in such rooms is impossible. However, today in the production of laminate they use innovative technologies, which make it possible to make such a solution a reality. Today we will talk about how to choose a moisture-resistant laminate.

Features of moisture-resistant laminate

Today, decorative finishing of housing is simply impossible without the use of various floor coverings, among which laminate occupies a special place. Such material is at the same time very attractive, easy to use and affordable when compared with parquet and other floor coverings.

Modern laminate is used not only in living rooms(bedrooms, children's rooms, living rooms, hallways and kitchens), but also in bathrooms and showers. Some types of laminate that imitate ceramic tiles, slate and natural stone are even installed in saunas and swimming pools.

Water resistance is the weakest point of any laminate. The top of any such floor covering is usually capable of preventing moisture. But, if water gets into the junction of two laminate slabs, it will penetrate further inside, so swelling threatens in the future. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to install waterproof laminate.

The technology for producing moisture-resistant laminate is similar to the manufacturing process for a standard coating. But the slabs are not made from shavings, but from solid wood fibers. It's already on at this stage allows the material to become more water resistant. The process of pressing and special processing of wood fibers occurs under high pressure and high temperature.

As a result of such manipulations, the material becomes very dense; it no longer allows the smallest drops of water to pass through. In addition, after pressing, the slabs are covered with a special solution, which does not allow the development of fungus and mold when laying the laminate in rooms with high humidity (bathroom, bathtub, bathhouse), and then a substance containing resins and wax is applied to it in several layers, which repels water. Therefore, all cracks are perfectly sealed, without allowing moisture to pass through and without destroying the wood material itself.

A moisture-resistant laminate consists of the following layers: a corrugated top layer, a waterproof reinforced layer, a decorative film with a pattern, a main base that is also waterproof, a fastening system and a stabilizing backing. The main characteristics of a waterproof laminate are as follows: moisture resistance, impact resistance, absence of deformation from temperature fluctuations and slipping, antistatic properties(dust does not settle on the surface), mold protection and environmental safety.

Waterproof and moisture resistant laminate

When choosing a laminate, you should pay attention that there are moisture-resistant and water-resistant laminates on sale, which have some differences between them. The difference is fundamental for those consumers who decide what to cover the floor in the kitchen or bathroom, where there is an increased level of moisture. Although modern moisture-resistant laminate has high wear-resistant characteristics!

Waterproof laminate is resistant not to simple moisture, evaporation and dampness, but to direct contact with water. All the cracks that exist between the laminate slabs are closed in the most reliable way - using heated wax. Some manufacturers guarantee the safety of such a laminate even after it has been in water for several weeks, since a plastic base is used instead of wood fiber. The best manufacturers of waterproof laminate are two German companies Grande and Castilia.

Moisture-resistant laminate is treated with paraffin and various compounds that can only prevent the effects of moisture for a while. The basis of such a coating is a high-strength fiberboard, but it cannot withstand prolonged exposure to water and begins to rot and swell. In addition, moisture-resistant laminate is able to change its volume with temperature fluctuations.

Based on the properties of the water- and moisture-resistant laminate described above, the following conclusions can be drawn. Moisture-resistant laminate is not afraid of dirt and wet cleaning, prevents the development of bacteria and fungus, and therefore is excellent for installation in the hallway and kitchen. However, as a covering for a bathroom, sauna, bathhouse, swimming pool, balcony and veranda, it is better to take a waterproof laminate, which resists prolonged exposure to water and atmospheric conditions, and almost does not deform or wear out.

In order for a moisture-resistant laminate to retain its properties, you need to properly care for the coating. If water gets on the surface, you should wipe it off immediately without checking the water-repellent properties of the laminated board. Problems only arise when moisture passes through the panels, damaging the base of the laminate flooring. As a result, the panels pick up moisture, begin to rise and become deformed, and the floor acquires relief. Therefore, long-term interaction with water of even the highest quality waterproof laminate is not advisable.

Choosing a moisture-resistant laminate

Moisture-resistant laminate flooring is offered today by almost all major manufacturers. Therefore, it is so important to know how to choose truly high-quality material.

The description of a moisture-resistant laminate usually contains the word aqua. For example, Aqua-Protect or Aqua Resist. On the packaging of the laminate, the markings depict an umbrella or a faucet with a drop and similar symbols that help to understand which laminate is moisture resistant.

Even a non-professional consumer can easily distinguish moisture-resistant laminate. It contains a specific green HDF board that is noticeable when the material is cut. It is this layer that is absolutely resistant to moisture and dampness and prevents the proliferation of fungus and bacteria due to antibacterial impregnation.

Load class

A popular criterion for assessing the quality of a coating is the load class. It is recommended to choose a coating of at least class 32 - for example, moisture-resistant Dumafloor laminate. The optimal solution for the kitchen would be class 33, which is stronger and more wear-resistant than coatings of class 31 and 32. Many buyers have noticed that the moisture resistance of class 33 coating will be much higher than that of its “younger relatives.”

But purchasing class 34 laminate for home use, according to experienced specialists, is not always justified. It is primarily intended for commercial premises, and its price is much higher. The durability and strength of the laminate will often depend on the manufacturer. For example, a German laminated board of class 32 is better in quality than Chinese or Russian laminate of class 33.

Properties

To figure out which is the best moisture-resistant laminate from several very similar options, it is recommended to look at the density of the load-bearing HDF boards: the higher this parameter is, the more durable the coating is and the less susceptible it is to moisture.

Another important indicator is the swelling coefficient, which is determined using tests when the laminate is kept in water for 24 hours. The approximate rate is 18% for this indicator. The lower the swelling coefficient, the more moisture resistant the laminate is.

To check the quality of the laminate at home and its moisture resistance, do this. Saw off a small piece of laminate or take one already finished sample for tests, put it in water room temperature for 8 o'clock. During this time, it should swell by no more than 18%. For example, if the thickness of the laminate is 8 millimeters, then the thickness after such manipulations should be no more than 9.5 millimeters. Practice shows that low-quality laminate will swell by 30-40%, and maybe more.

Price

Remember that prices for moisture-resistant collections will be significantly higher than the cost of ordinary flooring. And this is quite logical: what more expensive laminate, the higher quality it is, and its characteristics are better. You definitely shouldn’t skimp on quality by choosing cheap laminate from an unknown brand.

Expensive laminate flooring from well-known manufacturers will serve you for many years: the best laminate manufacturers issue a guarantee for 25-50 years. Economy-class moisture-resistant laminate, but of tolerable quality, costs from 500 rubles per square meter in online stores. Remember that there is no 32nd class laminate cheaper than 380 rubles per square meter. Very often it is written on the price tags of such laminates that it is made in Belgium or Germany, but in fact it is made in China or Russia. Price for moisture-resistant laminate High Quality from European manufacturers, as a rule, starts from about 1,300 rubles per square meter.

This solution is a compromise option, inconvenient, but sometimes justified. You can lay an economy-class laminate on the floor, which in a few years will need to be replaced with a more durable and high-quality moisture-resistant one; you will have time to raise money to buy such a thing. Fortunately, installing modern laminate flooring with locks is a quick, relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive process.

Connection locks

When buying a laminate that is not afraid of exposure to water, you should definitely look at the connecting locks. They should, ideally, firmly fix the panels to each other without creating gaps. If the locking mechanism is good, then after laying the laminate there will be almost no gaps between the boards, and water will have no chance of getting into the joints. And if, when laying a moisture-resistant laminated board, you make a good leveling of the floor and place a cork backing, you can completely forget about your fears.

Laminate locks that are vulnerable spot coatings can be impregnated superficially or deeply. Deep impregnation, like Tarkett’s moisture-resistant laminate, can well protect the surface from the harmful effects of moisture, while surface impregnation can only provide water-repellent properties. And it’s up to you to find out which is which!

When purchasing, look at the product: with shallow impregnation, locks look quite wet and slippery, but if the treatment is done efficiently, then trying to scrape off the wax with a fingernail will lead to nothing. If some of the wax remains on the nails, this indicates a good level of surface treatment, however, such a laminate will cause some problems in the future, such as deformation of the floor.

Appearance

Laminate flooring is quite slippery. Especially when the same ill-fated water hits it. To avoid accidentally slipping in the kitchen, you should give preference to a floor covering not with a smooth surface, but with a slightly embossed and structured surface.

The best choice for a bathroom is laminate, which resembles ceramic tiles in its structure and is distinguished by the following features: non-standard shape - small slabs, the dimensions of which reach 400 by 400 to 400 by 1200; a pronounced shine that allows the bathroom to be embellished.

Manufacturers and collections

We will mention only some of the large manufacturers of laminate flooring, whose assortment includes collections with moisture-resistant properties. The most famous brands on the Russian market are: Pergo, Alloc, moisture-resistant laminate Witex, Kronospan, Classen, Quick-Step, Tarkett. European-made laminate, which is made in Germany, Belgium, Norway or Sweden, has a good reputation.

This laminate is considered more durable and of higher quality. Many buyers claim in their reviews that it lasts longer, scratches less and withstands even large “floods” and “floods” perfectly. It is recommended to buy waterproof laminated coating only in closed pavilions and specialized stores where all the quality certificates for such products are available.

Domestic laminated coatings are more affordable at a price. In addition, many famous European manufacturers They produce their products at their own Russian factories. Therefore, you need to pay attention not only to trademark, but also to the address indicated on the package.

It is wrong to think that only bad laminate is produced in our country. For example, some types of Tarkett moisture-resistant laminate are made from European boards, and the characteristics of these collections are very good. Quick Step laminate is made at a Russian factory from boards produced in Belgium. And the laminated boards they produce in our country are successfully sold in Europe or the States. The factory guarantee will equally apply to both Europe and our country.

How to recognize Chinese laminate

If you are wondering how to choose best laminate How to recognize Chinese material and not confuse it with European material, you should use our recommendations. First, check the laminated board for odor. High-quality E1 class flooring has virtually no odor.

After that, pay attention to the size of the laminate. If the board is 1215 millimeters long and 12.3 millimeters thick, then it is 99% Chinese. Such characteristics of the laminate are determined by the factory settings of Chinese manufacturers of moisture-resistant laminate, since laminate with similar parameters is produced the cheapest.

You should also check the labeling of your laminate flooring. Very often nothing is written on the board of moisture-resistant laminate of Chinese origin. In Europe and Russia, there is always a marking and the country of origin is indicated. In this case, the manufacturer is never written in an abbreviated version. It is not correct if the packaging of the laminate states: “made in EU”. Must be marked: “made in France”.

In addition, there is another way to distinguish the Chinese analogue from the European one. quality laminate. Look at the color of its reverse side. The back side of laminate made in China is brown, while that of Europeans is beige. But recently, cases have become more frequent when the Chinese have the reverse side also beige.

In addition, you can go all-in on checking the quality of moisture-resistant laminate. You just need to check the repeatability of the image on the boards. All manufacturers of expensive laminated flooring are trying to achieve such an effect when the laminate, which imitates a wooden floorboard, is as similar as possible to it. Remember that each plank of wooden flooring has its own unique individual pattern.

Therefore, self-respecting manufacturers of laminated coatings try to produce as many boards with different patterns as possible. The minimum repeatability of boards is 1:6. for example, if you opened 4 packs and found that there were no more than 6 boards with different wood patterns, then the manufacturer was trying to save as much as possible. And if the company saves on this, then it is unlikely that it did not save on more significant characteristics. Now do you understand how much good quality moisture-resistant laminate flooring costs?

Let's give an example. Manufacturer Unilin in the production of Quick laminated boards Step collections Largo adheres to the unique 1:60 image repeatability! But Chinese manufacturers, as a rule, make moisture-resistant laminate with a pattern repeatability of 1 to 4 or even 1 to 3. Don’t fall for this trick!

Fiction or harsh reality?

Many have heard a strange, and even absurd statement - " If you pour water onto a laminate floor, after a few minutes the laminate will begin to swell and deform, eventually deteriorating completely.".

Is laminate flooring really afraid of water? How much is laminate flooring resistant to liquid? Bathroom and kitchen for laminate - taboo? - There are a lot of questions.

In fact, you need to know that laminate comes in different varieties. In fact, these can be completely different floor coverings, primarily distinguished by their class.

Laminate classification

Each laminate has its own class, which determines its most important properties. Of course, the higher the class of the laminate, the thicker, stronger, more durable and reliable it is:

Laminate of low class and quality is really afraid of water and moisture. A small puddle will be enough. to render your floor unusable;

Laminate of middle class and quality is also afraid of water and moisture. But compared to low-end laminate it is a little less. Half an hour is the deadline for mid-range laminate;

High-end laminate is distinguished by the fact that it can withstand exposure to water for a long time, for example, for several hours. However, this laminate is also afraid of water and moisture, and its protective properties will only last for a few hours.

A special class of laminate is waterproof, which can be installed in the kitchen, bathroom and even in the pool. However, the price of such a laminate can be steep.

Laminate is a popular floor covering, the areas of application of which were limited by its low moisture resistance. Even wet cleaning gradually led to swelling of the slabs and deformation of the seams. The appearance on the market of products with increased moisture resistance has made it possible to install laminate flooring in rooms with increased level humidity - in kitchens, bathrooms, corridors - and frequent wet cleaning.

What is the difference between moisture-resistant laminate and water-resistant laminate?

Which laminate is moisture resistant?

This type of flooring includes laminate, which can withstand moisture in the air and short time withstand direct exposure to water. Moisture-resistant floor panels include fibreboard high density, to which they add:

  • special resins– from 4% to 8%, their specific amount is determined by the percentage of hardwood and softwood in the raw material;
  • pectol– designed to increase strength characteristics, its presence allows you to reduce the thickness of the panel without loss of strength;
  • water repellents– rosin or paraffin – they increase moisture resistance;
  • antiseptics– increases the resistance of the floor covering to mold.

Not only the slabs, but also the seams between them should be moisture resistant. To do this, the locking joint is impregnated with paraffin or wax under high temperature conditions. This protective layer prevents moisture from penetrating the wood fibers.

Moisture resistance of seams is an important detail.

Attention! If the slab has swollen as a result of exposure to moisture, drying it is useless. It is necessary to replace all or part of the coating.

Which laminate is called waterproof?

This type of flooring can be divided into two groups: limited water resistance and water resistant. The first group includes panels, which, like moisture-resistant ones, are made on the basis of high-density fiberboard with a complex of additives of various functionality. Manufacturers clearly indicate the maximum allowable time of direct contact with water. This coating can be used, for example, when decorating a kitchen.

This waterproof laminate is made by extrusion from high-density polyvinyl chloride. In addition to the water resistance that allows this flooring to be used in the bathroom, this waterproof laminate has other positive characteristics, among which:

  • environmental friendliness and compliance with hygienic requirements - even direct contact of such products with food is allowed;
  • ability to withstand contact even with hot water without loss of performance;
  • resistance to chemically aggressive detergents;
  • good wear resistance;
  • embossed anti-slip coating;
  • relative non-flammability;
  • reinforced locks;
  • long operational period.

Structural components of a waterproof laminated panel:

  • top transparent anti-slip layer;
  • decorative layer;
  • polyvinyl chloride plate - a load-bearing layer in which there are air chambers;
  • hydrophobic base;
  • tarred paper that acts as a stabilizer.

Thanks to the supporting layer with air chambers, waterproof material is characterized by:

  • good sound insulation characteristics;
  • high heat-saving properties;
  • small mass.

Classification of laminate according to moisture resistance

There is no clear classification of laminated panels based on moisture resistance. Manufacturers usually indicate optimal applications on the packaging.

Manufacturers usually indicate optimal applications.

Approximate division of laminated panels by functionality, depending on the degree of their water absorption:

  • Regular laminate, not intended for use in conditions of high humidity. Has water absorption in the range of 8-16%.
  • Water absorption in the range of 2-8% is typical for moisture-resistant materials and coatings with limited water resistance. Such products can be used for corridors and kitchens. The time of direct contact with water is no more than three hours.
  • Waterproof laminate is the best option for installation in bathrooms and unheated rooms. It has a very low level of water absorption - less than 2%. This material is quite suitable for installation in bathrooms, bathhouses and other rooms, which are characterized not only by a high level of humidity, but also by the likelihood of direct contact of the floor covering with water, including hot water.

Let us consider in more detail the features of choosing moisture-resistant or water-resistant products for premises of various functional purposes.

Which moisture-resistant laminate is better to choose for the kitchen, corridor, hallway?

For installation in the kitchen choose moisture resistant material with non-slip surface. The thickness of the slabs must be at least 8 mm. The moisture resistance of the floor covering is increased by treating the seams with moisture-proofing compounds. Therefore, for this purpose it is recommended to purchase panels with a small chamfer along the edges - 1-2 mm. The chamfer holds moisture-resistant compounds well. The chamfer can be V-shaped or U-shaped, two- or four-sided. The U-shaped bevel is visually more attractive.

How to choose the most waterproof laminate for your bathroom?

The bathroom requires a floor covering with the highest level of moisture resistance - waterproof polyvinyl chloride. A board with a load-bearing PVC layer, thanks to its honeycomb structure, has not only high moisture resistance, but also strength. Manufacturers offer Decoration Materials with a reinforcing layer of mineral chips, which have uniquely high wear resistance. In terms of variety of textures and colors, PVC-based laminate is not inferior to panels based on fibreboard. Additional benefit for such products there are no restrictions on use with underfloor heating systems, regardless of the heat source.

The joints are impregnated with a special hydrophobic composition. Saturated glossy color usually indicates deep impregnation. Such products are optimal for installation in the bathroom. A more transparent protective layer is a sign of surface treatment.

Advice! Glossy waterproof panels go well with ceramic tiles. You should choose laminated products that match not only color, but also shape.

Even high-quality waterproof laminate cannot be used under prolonged exposure to water. Even the highest quality waterproofing of seams will not be able to prevent water from getting under the laminated boards, which will lead to the appearance of mold and unpleasant odor. The best option for a bathroom is a coating with detachable connections. If the floor is flooded with water, the panels can be disassembled, the base can be dried, and individual sections can be replaced if necessary.

For a bathroom located in multi-storey building above the first floor, it is advisable to use only laminate that is resistant to direct exposure to water. In case of accidents in heat or water supply systems, it will be able to completely or at least partially protect the lower floors from flooding.

How to distinguish moisture- and water-resistant laminate from regular laminate when purchasing?

When purchasing panels for flooring, the humidity level in the room is first determined. Moisture-resistant panels can be used in the kitchen, hallway and corridor. In the bathroom and rooms with frequent and significant temperature changes (veranda, unheated room), it is recommended to install waterproof products.

How to determine whether a laminate is moisture-resistant or not? On the packaging of products with low water absorption you will see the words Aquastop, Aqua+, Waterresist. Also, the level of resistance to moisture can be expressed by pictograms in the form of water drops, an umbrella, a tap. The lack of moisture resistance is indicated by the “crossed out bathtub” icon. The box with panels may indicate the base material:

  • HDF (HDF) - high-density fiberboards, are the load-bearing layer of moisture-resistant and limited water-resistant materials;
  • PVC (PVC, polyvinyl chloride) - serves as the basis for waterproof products.

The swelling coefficient is important, characterizing the degree of decomposition of the material after its daily stay in water. For non-moisture resistant products it is 18%. Pay attention to the warranty period provided by the manufacturer if operating conditions are met. It is indicated on the packaging of the material or in the accompanying documentation.

Pay attention to the warranty period provided by the manufacturer if operating conditions are met.

The best manufacturers of moisture- and water-resistant laminate

Companies that produce high-quality and reliable panels with low water absorption:

  • Egger is a powerful Austrian concern, whose production facilities operate in many European countries and in Russia. EggerAqua+ products are designed for use in bathrooms and other areas with high humidity.
  • Vinyl coverings from the manufacturer Berry Alloc
  • Kronotex Robusto brand panels (Germany) are moisture-resistant products of guaranteed quality, made on the basis of high-pressure fiberboard. On a surface- various options embossing. These products are well suited for rooms with high humidity. Due to the absence of phthalates in the boards, they can be installed in rooms where children are constantly present.
  • All laminate produced by the manufacturer Kronospan has maximum moisture resistance Aqua Stop

The price of moisture-resistant laminate made from high-pressure fibreboard depends on the thickness of the board, wear resistance class and brand. And the cost of a waterproof plastic laminate is approximately 2 times higher than the price of products based on fiberboard - it ranges from 1.3-5.0 thousand rubles. for 1 m 2.

In fact, these are two different types of material, and their areas of application (as well as technical properties) are quite different.

The resulting load-bearing part of the board absorbs moisture much less than that of a standard coating. In addition, a waterproofing film can be added to the top protective layer.

Waterproof laminate, as opposed to moisture resistant, is a product that « not afraid of water » in the literal sense of the word.

  • Identical installation technology (using a locking connection);
  • Effective protection against water droplets, vapors and moisture;
  • High sound and heat insulation characteristics of the laminate (however, like a conventional laminated coating).

Differences:

  • The waterproof laminate is based on a PVC board, the moisture-resistant laminate is based on wood fiber;
  • Moisture resistance is higher for laminate with a plastic base;

  • household premises – 2;

In recent years, class 43 laminate flooring has appeared on the market. It is not included in the official classification according to GOST 32304-2013. However, in this way manufacturers are trying to show the increased performance properties of their product, in particular the water resistance of the laminate.

    • density value of the supporting HDF board: the higher it is, the more durable the coating and less susceptible to moisture;

  • Pencil and ruler-corner;
  • Electric jigsaw or circular saw;
  • Hammer;
  • Doboynik;
  • Stationery knife;
  • Roulette;

  • First, the left front (farthest from the entrance to the room) corner is laid;

If we talk about waterproof laminate, the best manufacturers are in Germany, Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden) and Belgium.

  1. accurately determine the level of humidity in the room;
  2. choose the right type of coating with necessary and sufficient protection from water;
  3. carry out installation of the coating in compliance with all norms and regulations.

Even inexpensive flooring can last quite a long time if it is suitable for the room and installed correctly. If you doubt your abilities, it is better to entrust the work to specialists or at least learn the intricacies of the process from professionals.
