In the photo below, the boards are connected using a groove method. The seat board fits into the grooves on the stand legs.
Here below the bench is made EXACTLY THE SAME - using the panel method. Only the material of the shield is rougher and unhewn. And here they added a back - it was also cut into grooves cut into the support panels.
- The fastening of the shields to each other can be GROOVED (as in the photo above) - where in some shields grooves are cut out, and other shields are moving down. Such fasteners are used only in panels made from a SINGLE PIECE OF WOOD. Glued boards are not suitable for this - they can delaminate in the places where they are glued.
- ADDITIONAL FASTENING ELEMENTS are also used for fastening – wooden(tsars, corner jibs, pro-legs), metal(angles, staples and perforated plates).
Village benches are made using the panel method. 2 side panels (these are the legs) - connected to each other by a long board (these are the legs). The board can be located in the lower part of the interleg, or in the upper part of the interleg - immediately under the seat board. In the photo below we see both of these methods of positioning the leg under the bench.
As you understand, the shields you work with do not have to have a name correct form. These may be fragments of an old gnawed board - in which you cut flat support lines for SEAT AND BACK REST.
In the photo below, the solid shield acts as a support for both the seat board and the back board.
The principle is the same here - a solid support for the seat and back of a country bench.
And this beautiful white bench for the dacha is made according to the same principle. Only it is made from evenly cut panels and painted.
Below we see a panel model of a bench with a back, where 2 panels play the role of support for the seat and back.
And these supporting SIDE PANELS are made at a slight angle of inclination. And so the bench turned out to have a seat with an inward slope and a slightly reclined back. It is very comfortable to sit on such a bench.
And agree to do it, cutting out such a bench with your own hands is very easy. Here the drawing does not have to be accurate. Just do it to your heart's content. Easy side angle choose by eye.
- The side support of the backrest is in the form of a long triangle (choose the angle of inclination yourself).
- The leg support for the seat is in the form of an elongated trapezoid (can be tilted or not).
- A piece of thick timber is smoothed under the leg supports so that the bench has height. But if you have a wide board, then the legs will be higher on the bench, then you can do it without timber supports
All parts can be mounted on ordinary nails.
So that the bench isn't so low(if you wish) you can make the foot beams higher - knock together several pieces of timber at once - put them on top of each other like a tower and secure them with inside with a board (to keep everything together) or without a board just on nails.
And such a bench can also be PUT ON LEGS - also in the shape of an elongated trapezoid. The pads are stuffed on the inside of the seat support.
BENCH SHIELDS may be KNOWN (that is, not solid, but consisting of boards connected to each other with a bridge). The simple country bench with the photo below demonstrates this method.

Benches FROM EDGED BOARDS

You can also make an interesting SLATT BENCH from the carved sides. They have a round seat with smooth outlines and a curved back line.

from foam blocks with a cavity.
Foam blocks (or gas silicate blocks) are sometimes made with through holes inside. This is done to save material and also to enhance the heat-shielding properties of such a building material.
And we can use this “leaky” feature of gas silicate blocks - for the good purposes of creating a bench for the dacha.
To do this, we install 2 two rows of foam blocks WITH THE HOLES DOWN, and on top we put more foam blocks WITH THE HOLES TO THE SIDE. And we insert timber of a suitable cross-section into these holes. To make it more comfortable for your butt to sit on top, you can put foam pillows on it. It is better to choose those that are lined with waterproof fabric. Or sew it yourself from oilcloth and thick foam rubber (sold in hardware stores and construction stores).
You can simply hammer the planks into a solid one to create a flat seat without holes.
It’s also good to coat the foam blocks with regular paint to create a bright, beautiful bench.

Having carefully cut off a couple of medium-sized stumps, they can be placed on the base of the bench. Use poles to make a bottom crossbar for structural rigidity. And for sitting, loosen part of the trunk on the circular. If there is no equipment for longitudinal sawing, then you can take an unedged board 75 mm thick.
In this example, the bench is already more comfortable - in addition to the seat, it also has a backrest. The model is a little more complicated, since you will have to find a higher part of the trunk and process it in two steps - first make a profile cut with a “ledge”, and then split the workpiece into two halves.
And to assemble the next bench, you will need:
- two short logs of the same diameter for the base;
- two medium-thick poles for back support;
- one long log, sawn into two halves (for the seat and back).
In short logs, you need to choose a groove so that the long log fits into it. Then the seat is secured in the grooves, and each pole is fixed at two points - to the base and to the seat. For fastening, it is better to choose powerful self-tapping wood bolts.
Another budget material for a country bench - pallets (wooden pallets). But not just any pallet is suitable for making garden furniture. Ideally, you need a good edged board, a so-called Euro pallet, which can be identified by the EUR marking.
Basically, standard width The euro pallet is somewhat large for the seat - 80 cm. You can shorten it to 67 cm by cutting it along the contour of the central bar. But you don’t have to do this. Here are some examples simple designs With different options bases and seats:
1. A bench made of four pallets uncut to width. Three serve as the base, and the fourth serves as the back. You will have to remove some of the support bars from the pallet for the backrest, and ensure the rigidity of the bench using wooden slats.
2. In this case, four pallets are also used, but already trimmed. Three ropes woven with a braid are used to secure the backrest, and wallpaper nails are used for decoration.
3. This bench is made from just two pallets. One is whole, and the second is cut and, as it were, bent at an angle - it serves as both a seat and a backrest. The design is good for its mobility - there are small wheels as legs.
Perhaps the only inconvenience of using Euro pallets as a source material is standard sizes 80x120 cm. They to some extent limit the possibilities for creativity. The use of ordinary lumber (boards, beams and beams) allows you to make a garden bench to suit every taste.

It’s worth saying right away that any bench drawing can be adjusted for specific conditions. The only limitation is that the thickness of the board and the cross-section of the beam are sufficient to provide load-bearing properties.

- long support (front leg).

The result is a stable structure with a triangle at the base and two transverse stiffeners.

This drawing shows the bench in a more complex design. To make it, you need a 40x140 mm board (supports, back and seat), a 40x70 mm block (short bundles of supports) and a 20 mm board (long bundle between the sidewalls).
And this is the same design, but using a board and a block 75 mm thick. Small differences in the base and attachment of the ligaments are not fundamental.
In principle, there is only one condition - the boards in the seat are fastened with a small gap, sufficient to compensate for the expansion of the wood under high humidity.
Large forms
Wooden benches in a “large format” look original.

Stone and wood
Stone, like wood, also fits organically into the landscape suburban area. Of course, a smooth slab is practically never found in nature, but you can use sawn stone.
The next option is easier to implement - the bench is made of small blocks wild stone. And since such a surface is not only cold, but also uneven, you can’t do without pillows.
Pillows add comfort, but you have to constantly bring them in and out. That is why wood is used for seats on garden benches, regardless of the base material. This is how this original bench uses a gabion (a mesh cage filled with stone, crushed stone or pebbles) at the base.
Concrete is no less popular for making the base of a bench. But it’s difficult to make a form with a complex contour for pouring at once, but small formwork is simple. And even a “cold seam” when poured in two steps will not affect the strength of the structure (such as in this photo).
Another option for artificial stone is hollow building concrete blocks. It is enough to fasten them together with good masonry glue, and lay a beam in the cavity, and the bench is ready.
Metal and wood
The simplest benches in design metal frame use a square profile.

The following example also uses solid wood as a stiffening element, but the supports are made in the form of a square with a cross member for attaching the seat.

Bench design with backrest
Such garden bench consists of several parts that perform different functions:
- Legs are support elements that allow you to stably place the product on the platform. To maintain the balance of the bench, even when no one is sitting on it, the legs on the back side are made wider. The height is taken into account in accordance with a comfortable fit - 40-50 cm.
- The seat is the horizontal surface of the bench that is attached to the legs.
- The backrest serves for a comfortable sitting position. This element is fixed to the upper parts of the rear legs or to the edge of the seat.
- Armrests are optional parts, but useful. They serve for a comfortable positioning of the hands of the person sitting and give the bench a more complete look. The connection can be made in different ways: with the seat and back, with one of these parts, or by moving the armrests away from the legs.
Wooden - the simplest
For work use a regular carpentry tool– manual or electric. The assembly elements most often are boards, slats and beams. Standard configurations and sizes of building elements help create the correct geometric shapes and securely fasten parts together. Metal benches
A pure metal garden bench is a rarity. Iron as a material for a bench has a number of disadvantages: cold surface, rigidity, difficulty in processing, and others. The only factor due to which metal is sometimes preferred to wood is its longer service life. The disadvantages of the material can be easily circumvented by using soft pads on the seat and back.
Metal product
The elements of an ordinary iron bench and the methods for making the structure are the same as for a wooden bench. Instead of boards and beams, rolled metal and pipes are used. The legs and intermediate transverse supports for the seat and back are made from corners, I-beams or profiles. Pipes with a round cross-section are also suitable. To form planes, it is better to use a profiled pipe: it is durable and creates an even, smooth surface.
Stone and combined benches
A garden bench made of granite, concrete, marble is a heavy and complex stationary structure that is difficult to make yourself using one material. Processing the bench may take several months.
Bench made of stone and wood
Stationary options have high aesthetic value, where stands (columns) made of stone are the legs of the bench. This kind of work is easy to do; the upper elements of the bench are more difficult to manufacture. In the countryside, instead of stone, you can use concrete, from which it is easy to create an interesting shape of legs with cutouts for the seat.
It is not necessary to increase the support area of a stone bench with a back - the concrete is firmly connected to the ground.
A combined option that also deserves attention is a garden bench made of metal and wood. This design has a number of advantages: the iron frame increases service life, and wooden elements the backs and seats are easy to replace in case of breakdown. Forged parts and shaped armrests add a special touch to the benches.
Wooden, metal and concrete benches with a back require surface treatment immediately after manufacture. Antifungal and anticorrosion agents, primers, enamels, paints, varnishes protect materials from damage by insects, mold and exposure environment.
