Grinding the walls of a log house from a log of hand-cutting

And again we are glad to welcome you, developers and customers SPK Russian hut. This time we will talk about such a necessary operation as grinding a log house. Why do you need to grind logs, if the wood is very durable and aesthetically attractive in itself, how difficult is this work, is it possible to do it yourself, and how much does it cost if you apply for grinding to an organization - we hope you will be given detailed answers to all of the above questions. and clear answers this article.

So, the first question that you are certainly interested in is -

What is the price per square meter for sanding a log house?

The total cost of work is determined taking into account the following factors:

  • the number of consumables per square meter or one pass of the tool;
  • prices for the services of specialists, which are determined depending on the area of \u200b\u200bthe walls;
  • the number of antiseptics, work on their application.

I will say right away: different construction companies and teams set their own price. They are guided by their own experience, the availability of a professional tool, ambitions and so on. Therefore, I can’t say exactly how much the builders will ask you, of course. But I can announce the prices for grinding in the SPK Russaya Izba.

On average, grinding in one pass costs the customers of SPK Russkaya Izba in 300-400 rubles per square meter, but prices in each case vary - depending on the total surface area, whether grinding is needed inside or outside, on whether the customer is applying for the first time or is our regular customer. In a word, everything needs to be clarified, what is called, on the spot. So - leave a request, call - we'll discuss everything!

If it seems to you that the prices are too high, we want to clarify that grinding is a rather complicated type of work. It requires not only a professional tool, but also considerable experience! In general, over the long years of our work, we have learned that the customer at the design stage of the future home does not even realize what a load of problems he is shouldering. And when all the problems are clearly looming, it is important that the performer he has chosen is reliable. After all, some may turn their backs! And reliable - and will do everything in good faith, and will give an answer to any question, even years after the construction of a log cabin, and will name the real price. So, without proper experience, a log house can be spoiled in order.

What does it mean? An angle grinder (or a grinder) is used for wood processing - we will tell you more below - and you need to be able to work with it! Yes, not just to know the principle, but to be able to smoothly move along the surface, so that the angle grinder does not jump at hand, crashing into a tree, making teases and waves. Most often, inexperienced masters and it happens. Here, firstly, the usual technique of work is important - not with the hands, but with the shoulders and forearms. And secondly, you need to choose the right nozzles with different grains. Let's talk about this too.

The main thing for you to understand is that if you don’t know how, it’s better not to take it. Spoil a bunch of material - for the same amount that professionals would take for work (we don’t exaggerate!), And already spend your nerves, but time ...

Now about the process itself.

Grinding and painting after grinding the walls of the log house

If you still do not understand why it is necessary to grind the log walls of a log house, we will explain. The main purpose of polishing is to give the building an aesthetic appearance. Wood, even the strongest, darkens with time. In order to make the walls light, you can see the unique pattern of natural wood on them, smell it, and you need to sand it. But it is no less important that with the help of this operation, the log is cleaned of mold, fungus, bark residues, scuff marks, cracks, and so on. Logs acquire smoothness, while not losing their protective resinous layer! And, of course, varnishes and paints fit better on a polished surface, their adhesion to the surface increases. Perfectly absorbed into smooth walls and antiseptics.

Grinding is carried out after the end of the shrinkage period (at least 6 months after construction) and before the start of all finishing work, installation of windows, floors, ceilings, laying communications. Moreover, keep in mind that errors in the decoration of the walls of a log cabin made of planed logs cannot be hidden, as in the case of a beam, for example, under the floor, insulation or lining. The sanded surface must be perfectly smooth. Another point - by the time the log house is processed, it must have a roof on it - otherwise the work will be useless.

It is important to think over and organize the order of work. If the blue already spoils the look of the logs, the wood must first be “whitened”. To do this, use an antiseptic, impregnating the walls with it, let it dry well, and only then proceed to grinding. The grinding process itself is best done in parts - immediately covering the cleaned surfaces with an antiseptic. Leaving the treated logs uncoated for just a few days, you run the risk of starting all over again - the logs will have time to darken again.

They grind in three stages - in two passes with a grinder, using sandpaper of different fractions, and a control pass - manually. They also do the processing of all hard-to-reach places with their hands. If the log house has two floors, work is carried out starting from the second floor. There will be a lot of dust - you need to prepare in time to clean it with a vacuum cleaner and a broom. For the same reason, take care of personal protective equipment in advance - respirator masks (preferably paper ones, they form less moisture when breathing), glasses and gloves. If, nevertheless, plastic windows have already been installed, it is better to protect the mechanisms in them with a film (by closing the windows with it), you can also line the roof membrane with a film. Although I remind you again - it is best to grind while there are no windows, floors and ceilings yet (here are the most difficult areas). It is very difficult to handle the corners of the cuts - the grinder does not reach there, and you will have to go through the chisel.

After processing the log house, it must be covered with antiseptics and fire retardants. Optionally paint or varnish.

And, of course, a very important issue that we must definitely consider -

How to choose a tool for grinding the walls of a log house?

We have already said that an angle grinder is suitable for a round log - an angle grinder, or a grinder. Whereas for a log house, belt grinders are used. You need to choose an angle grinder by power - the ideal option is 850 watts, it is no longer required. When buying, hold the tool in your hand - it must be light, otherwise after several hours of work you will no longer be able to raise your hands. And be sure to pay attention to reliability - the Chinese angle grinder will fail very quickly, you will only lose the money invested in it.

Nozzles will also be required - it is very important to understand the process here. Do not buy super sophisticated ones - with Velcro, rubber and others. A nozzle is needed, to which the grinding disc is attached with a bolt. Discs are different in diameter, in our case, we need a diameter of 125-150 mm, no more. They will need a lot - per square meter from 1 to 3 pieces! By the way, do you know how to correctly calculate the area of log walls? We make several control measurements, measure all the bends of the crowns. For example, you have a ceiling two meters high, and the actual height of the log house wall turns out to be three and a half meters! So count right.

For the first pass, you will need sandpaper with a large grain - fraction 40 (it will also go for grinding the ends of the log house). The second pass is performed with sandpaper of a finer fraction - 80 (or 60, in extreme cases). For manual operations, stock up on a hammer and chisel.

Keep in mind that the outer layer of a softwood wall, although it will dry out by the time of sanding, still has resins - therefore, consumables will clog quickly. On average, a linear log with a diameter of 30 cm will take 2-3 minutes to pass 1 meter (if a professional works!). To change the material - the same.

Professionals sometimes grind grooves with a special flat nozzle for a grinder, but it is not suitable for an inexperienced beginner. It is better for him to go through the grooves manually. After the end of the entire grinding process, be sure to blow off all the dust without residue from the walls, and especially the corner joints of the crowns.

We will separately mention such an important operation as

Grinding the ends of the log house

The fact is that the outer ends are subject to the constant influence of natural factors, and suffer the most. Sanding will help to clog the natural channels in the wood, reducing its absorbency. Ultimately, the log house will stand for a long time - and this is exactly what we need!

Grind the ends with coarse sandpaper, and then polish thoroughly! An unpolished end will absorb water like a sponge. And, of course, immediately process - no later than two days after grinding. The surface will become smooth and hard, without tangible pile, any composition will perfectly fall on it - even protective, even painting.

Well, perhaps, all the important aspects of the log house grinding process that we wanted to tell you about today. Of course, there are a lot of nuances in this work - however, as in any other, questions will definitely arise “along the way”. Especially considering that each log cabin - like a living being - is special, unique. But this is why we love Russian log houses so much!

But the result of good, professional work will certainly please you! Look again at
log houses and hand-cut bathhouses from the SPK Russian hut - well, isn't such a bright and spacious tower worth going through the difficult path of construction, with all its problems? And if you got a reliable performer - do not hesitate, he will take on most of the worries. This is exactly how we work.
