Effective methods of soundproofing sewer pipes. How is soundproofing a sewer riser Soundproofing sewer pipes in a toilet with your own hands

In multi-storey prefabricated houses, there is one problem that any owner has encountered - the noise coming from the sewer. There are many reasons for the occurrence of an unpleasant sound, as well as methods for solving this problem. Proper soundproofing of the sewer riser can not only protect against noise, but also add zest to interior design. In this material, we will try to consider all aspects of high-quality sound insulation of the riser, how to wrap it and what can be done.

Why you need soundproofing of the sewer riser

The issue of soundproofing sewer pipelines is quite relevant today, as many people use plastic components. A plastic pipe, unlike cast iron, is subject to the passage of various types of noise. When sewer drains from cast-iron structures were installed, there was practically no noise, and if something murmurs somewhere, then literally after a few days everything calmed down. Modern building materials differ in their cost and characteristics. The only disadvantage of plastic products is the low level of sound insulation, which leads to discomfort for households. Noise insulation of sewer pipes in the apartment must be carried out in the correct sequence.

Some developers, when building new houses, install soundproofing of sewer pipes, but there are very few of them. The only solution to the problem is to do the soundproofing of the riser in your apartment on your own. To carry out insulation work, you will not need special education, large financial costs or tools. Anyone with the ability to work with scissors will be able to do all the installation work with their own hands.

Despite the ease of the processes, there are a number of difficulties that the master may encounter. First, you need to figure out why and where the noise starts, after that you need to figure out the choice of components. Of course, a specialist can quickly and efficiently solve the issue of soundproofing sewers, but you will have to pay money for such work.

Causes of sounds from the sewer riser

Sounds in the riser can occur due to various factors. Depending on what is the reason, you can solve the problem as quickly and efficiently as possible. There are enough reasons for the noise of plastic pipes, they can be:

 • Percussion, if inside the riser some object beats against the walls;
 • Atmospheric, resulting from the passage of wind through a ventilated riser;
 • Resonant, when the pipe transmits an extraneous sound;
 • Vibrating, arising during vibrations of the building structure.

The trumpet itself is an acoustic object and bears some resemblance to a speaker from a music center. Even if something hit the pipeline on the top floor, the whole house will hear it well along the stand. It is problematic to protect the sewage system from objects or contaminants getting inside, and only the soundproofing of the sewer drain remains.

There is another type of sound that, compared to the rest, is absolutely harmful - this is infrasound. The main difference of this sound is that it is heard at a frequency of 7 Hz. Such noise can not only infuriate or drive you crazy, but even kill a person. When choosing sound insulation for sewerage, special attention should be paid to this aspect.

There can be a lot of reasons for the appearance of noise in the risers, and it is pointless to find out their appearance. If there is a problem, then it must be solved immediately, and for this the market offers a great abundance of goods. Properly executed soundproofing of sewer pipes in the toilet will allow you not to listen to unpleasant noises while visiting the bathroom.

Why don't cast iron pipes make noise?

If we compare the noise from plastic and cast iron pipelines, then the second material emits them much less. The whole secret is hidden in the composition of cast iron. It consists of microscopic grains, due to which vibration vibrations are reduced. In addition, the porous structure of the product contributes to the rapid fouling of plaque, as a result of which the mass increases, and the resonant vibration decreases.

Methods for soundproofing a riser

If it is not possible to replace a conventional pipeline with soundproof products, then a number of measures can be taken to reduce noise in the sewer. Cast iron pipes were installed in old houses, and there are those who are only thinking about replacing them with modern plastic products. When the question arises: how to soundproof a sewer pipe, there is no definite answer, only an integrated approach will help to do everything quickly and efficiently. If such thoughts are in the future tense, then the old metal structures can still serve, the only thing they need is a good cleaning. Today there are a lot of descaling products. It is necessary to carefully treat the internal parts of the structure with a chemical solution. Of course, it is impossible to completely clean everything, but the chemistry will destroy the plaque structure and in just a few days it will be washed off with water. The advantage of such purification is simplicity and low cost.

The appearance of cast-iron pipes is completely unattractive, so they often replace the pipeline throughout the house. Plastic pipes are the best value for money. Such a sewer will be prettier, but it additionally needs to be soundproofed with special soundproofing products. If the riser in the apartment is made of a single pipe without joints, then using special damper clamps, you can not only securely fix, but also soundproof the material. The glass holder has a rubber tab in its design, which is a vibration-insulating layer. It is this layer that contributes to minimizing vibrational and structural noise in the structure. To protect the room from noise, it is also important to treat the top and bottom of the riser with a soundproof sealant.

Foamed polypropylene can also be used as a soundproofing option. The principle of soundproofing the riser is similar to the previous one, and the difference lies in the cost of components. The second option is cheaper. Regarding the working process, the insulating tube has one seam, and due to the softness of the product, it can be easily wrapped around the noise generator and fixed with adhesive tape. All types of installation work can be done by hand, thereby saving on the call of the masters.

Important! If noise insulation of a plastic sewer pipe is used, then products with a diameter that fully correspond to the size of the product should be selected, the quality of the insulating layer depends on this.

Some "masters" argue that the sound insulation of water supply pipes can be carried out with construction foam. In fact, the effectiveness of this method is minimal, and there will be a lot of garbage, and the appearance will suffer greatly.

There are people who use mineral wool as a soundproof building material. Such an insulator is not desirable to use in the open. Microparticles of fibers can get into the respiratory system and bring a lot of problems. In addition, the effectiveness of mineral wool extends to airborne noise, but it does not cope with infrasound, so it is better to protect yourself and your family from negative impacts.

Decorative insulating box

For audible noises in the sewer channel, special polyurethane foam pads can be used, which are made to the appropriate dimensions and diameter. These are a kind of decorative and insulating boxes, which, in addition to insulating properties, complement the overall appearance of the structure. The insulation consists of two halves; when assembling the structure, it is fastened with grooves. The main advantage of such soundproofing of the riser is the speed of work. In just a few minutes, you can put on a cover, and additionally wrap it with construction tape. Such products can be used if there is a space between the main wall and the riser for connecting the casing. If the pipeline fits snugly to the surface, then such sound insulation will be ineffective, but it will be able to keep a certain level of noise.

Often communication connections are located in the corner of the room. Such an arrangement is beneficial and convenient in its own way. If you install a box in the corner of the room, you can completely hide all communications, and give the room a more aesthetic appearance. In the corner it is convenient to make a box from two walls. Not only will a minimum of work be required, but such a change will have a good effect on the overall look.

To make such a box, you need to install two supports on the wall at the top and bottom. It is necessary to install the mount in such a way that the canvas completely covers the corner. Any type of building material can be used as a panel, from plywood to acoustic plasterboard.

Even if the trumpeter itself is not carefully silenced, the panel will hide all the shortcomings. You can make sure that access to the corner remains. Fixing the panel can be done using decorative fasteners. Thus, if necessary, the structure can be dismantled for repair and technical processes.

Silent pipes

The best sound insulation of the drain pipe in the toilet is considered to be its content and design. Today, the market offers products with sound-absorbing characteristics. In terms of sound retention, such products are comparable to cast iron. The composition of the material contains various additives, making the product immune to various kinds of noise. Such tubular products are able to neutralize even infrasound. The composition of the plastic includes a special powder made on a mineral basis. In appearance, such products differ in the thickness of the pipe walls. Basically, such designs are made in white with applied red and green stripes. The manufacturer's logo is applied to high-quality products. Sound-absorbing pipes, as well as cast-iron pipes, are capable of damping various types of noise, including infrasounds. The only drawback of such components is the high cost and relatively short service life, which is twenty years.

If we consider silent pipelines for the sewer system, then they are considered the best option. Despite the rather expensive product, there will be no problems with communication for two decades. The installation method of such communications does not include anything complicated, the main thing is to assemble it correctly and make additional waterproofing in advance. By installing silent pipes correctly, you can ensure comfortable conditions, and if you also perform soundproofing of the entire apartment, then the level of comfort will be maximum.

Use of noise-absorbing films and coatings

Due to the abundance of soundproofing materials on the market, it is possible to choose relatively inexpensive and simple options. For an economical option for soundproofing sewers, you can use a film coating or soundproof tape. The cost of such goods is low, and with proper sound insulation, the noise level will decrease significantly. The only drawback of this method is that it does not look very attractive, but this issue can be dealt with much easier than effectively and inexpensively protecting the sewer pipe.

How to choose soundproofing material

Of course, the proposed range of building materials causes some difficulties with its choice. How to soundproof a sewer riser at minimal cost. First, when you come to the store, you need to initially understand what kind of budget it has for these purchases. It is important to choose in such a way that there is enough insulating material. It makes no sense to purchase expensive products if there is only enough money for part of the structure. Also, the selection criterion is the method of installation and the location of the riser relative to the walls. If communications are located in a separate niche in the wall, then in this case it is necessary to isolate not the riser itself, but the entire place reserved for the pipeline. In this case, it is necessary to create a false wall with the possibility of access. Quite often, such niches are laid with bricks, leaving a small revision window. By installing audit doors with soundproofing, you can simultaneously hit two birds with one stone. Get rid of noise and add neatness to the interior.

Of course, the main selection criterion is the cost of the material, and only after that they look at the characteristics. With the use of modern noise insulation, good results can be achieved even with minimal thickness. Everything entirely depends on the owner of the apartment and his financial capabilities.

Mounting

When the choice is sorted out, you can proceed with the installation work. Before doing anything, it is imperative to prepare tools and accessories. Everything should be at hand, but in no case interfere with the work process. It is also important to know that preparation is done before any installation work. The surface of the pipes, the riser must be cleaned of dirt and dust. Such a procedure is necessary, since almost all dust, cobwebs and other defects accumulate on it, which negatively affect the fixation of components. To begin with, you can wipe it with a rag, and then degrease it with a special solution, the main thing is that the product does not collapse from direct exposure.

The required size of the canvas is measured and cut in accordance with the design of the drain. If the material has an adhesive base, then you need to wrap the soft side outward, and glue to the pipeline. The soundproofing qualities of the entire structure depend on the correctness of the cut. If the product is used without an adhesive base, then glue or silicone is applied to the surface of the pipeline. The wrapped insulation sheet can be overlapped to improve the insulation performance. On top of the noise insulation, you can stick adhesive tape for additional fixation of the insulating layer. Tight-fitting insulation will effectively and reliably protect not only the pipe, but also the bathroom itself from extraneous noise.

Silent pipe laying

Silent pipes are quite popular today and they are installed to replace the old cast-iron or even plastic ones. Despite the slightly high cost of products, its popularity does not decrease, but all thanks to its performance.

To lay a silent pipe runner, certain recommendations must be followed:

 • When measuring length, it is important to consider product tolerances. The plastic structure is cut to the desired size, and the cut edge should be filed to remove the burr, as it can affect its tightness.
 • At the joints, it is necessary to install the sealing rings in accordance with the grooves intended for them.
 • Pipes are connected by inserting a socket into the fitting. Before insertion, the joint is treated with a sealant for better sealing and sound insulation. Inserted shaped part until it stops, but when installing, you need to move the pieces so that a small gap is formed if there is thermal expansion.

By the nature of the work, it is not difficult and any owner can perform it, the main thing is to correctly measure and install. If necessary, the product can be fixed using special holders with rubber tabs. In addition to fixing, such fasteners minimize vibration noise in the riser. By using soundproof pipes it is possible to minimize the noise generated from the sewer system.

Using such a sewer design will save you from noise and repair problems for at least twenty years, so it’s not a pity to spend money on communications, it’s much more profitable than repairing individual sections in the future.

Soundproofing works

Noise insulation of plumbing pipes should be carried out comprehensively. In addition to the riser, there are also other communications and thin walls. As for the walls of the bathroom, depending on the area of the room, the optimal sound insulation is selected. The pipeline must be prepared before starting insulation work. All dust and contaminants are removed from the surface. You can also additionally degrease the surface for maximum adhesion to the adhesive base. The material is selected in accordance with the requirements for sound insulation.

If a sheet canvas is selected, then it must be marked and cut to size. Correct measurements guarantee a reliable soundproofing effect and an exact match. For an economical method of insulation, you can use: foamed polyethylene, polyurethane foam, plastic shell, soundproofing tapes and roll insulation.

Such a heater as mineral wool is not suitable for open sound insulation, small particles of fibers can be deposited in the lungs or on the skin, which will lead to a deterioration in well-being and health in general. Also, do not use construction foam, which is helpless for soundproofing the fan pipe.

Good soundproofing of a budget type will be rolled. The drain is wrapped with a dense layer of overlapping insulation. For better fixation, several layers of construction tape or crimping collars can be wound over the insulation. It should be noted that an increase in the mass of the structure helps to reduce the resonant sound.

Advice! If at the end of the soundproofing the maximum effect is not achieved, it can be done as an addition using a drywall box. It is also possible to increase efficiency by using plastic structures. At the end of all work, effective and reliable protection against sounds in the bathroom is obtained.

Soundproofing by infrasound

As you know, a person cannot hear ultrasound, since its range is 7 Hz. Such sound is extremely dangerous for human health and even life, as it creates a negative impact. Even in the last century, weapons were developed at low frequencies. You can protect yourself and your household from such sound using polyurethane foam or silent pipes. It should be noted that such soundproofing materials as mineral wool absolutely do not retain such sounds.

Partial riser replacement

With partial replacement, cast-iron structures with crosses are used. Such elements are not dismantled, but cleaned of various growths and formations on the inner side of the surface. Cleaning is done using various chemicals that unhook scale and growths, making them loose and porous. Over time and under the influence of sewage, the crosses will be cleaned, and they can be used for more than one year. The main advantage of partial replacement of the riser is that the pipe is divided into separate pieces, which means less acoustics. Also, one of the advantages of such work is that you do not have to dismantle the floor and ceiling in order to completely change your riser. Today, cast-iron pipes are no longer installed. If it turns out to find a suitable pipe, then many difficulties will arise with its processing and installation.

Partial replacement of the riser, unlike complete dismantling and installation from scratch, does not require significant material costs, in addition, all the work can be done independently without seeking help from specialists. Modern materials are of high quality, and they can be used both in a separate design and in combination with cast iron elements. Thanks to this feature, it is possible to save money and your own strength.

Riser damping

When a sewer system is installed, it will not work to use partial installation and everything must be done from scratch. In the place where the floor riser will be installed, insulation must be made. For such work, it is necessary to make a sleeve, which has a larger diameter than that of the riser pipe, but at the same time it must pass into the hole between the ceilings. In the case of an uninstalled riser, the sleeve is inserted in its entirety, and when everything has already been delivered, it is necessary to cut the insert and put it on the main pipe. When the sleeve is in place, the void should be blown out with mounting foam. It is not recommended to use mineral wool as a heater. Slipper soundproofing option is the best solution for the initial preparation of the apartment.

There is another option for damping the riser, it involves the use of special clamps that attach the pipe directly to the wall. If there are no special damped mounts, then simple clamps with inserted pieces of porous rubber are suitable as an alternative. Such fixation will not only make the riser stronger, but also more reliable.

Pipe insulation with polyurethane foam

PPU can have two types of insulation: a cylinder and a shell. Such isolation is used for noise isolation of the main sewerage routes. Due to the characteristics of the material, the products can be used at temperature extremes. Also, the product may have a foil surface. The period of use of such material is about thirty years, while it does not lose its characteristics and properties.

Installation of the product on the pipe is very simple and does not require special skills or knowledge. Two elements on the riser are connected into a single structure and fixed at the seams with glue. Tape and clamps are also suitable as an alternative. The clamps are taken with the expectation that two plastic holders are installed per linear meter of the pipe. The joints are fastened with a special tape, which is installed two pieces per linear meter.

How to close the pipe with soundproofing material

As a rule, sewer and water pipes have a nondescript appearance and spoil the entire interior. Using the manufactured box, you can hide all the flaws in the room. It is worth noting that the casing for pipes will not only be used as a decoration, but will also improve the quality of sound insulation. For the manufacture of the box, a construction made of drywall or plastic is suitable. Both of these materials have a flat surface, which will eventually give the correct shape of the structure.

If drywall is used in the manufacture, then a frame is required. You can make a frame using an aluminum profile or a wooden beam. Dimensions are measured directly in place to minimize the possibility of error. The box may have a different shape. If we consider the simplest options, then the square is the optimal solution.

Sometimes in apartments there are niches for communications and in this case it is possible to make a false wall as a solution. The niche opening is bricked up or a plasterboard partition is made. In the place of access to taps and counters, an inspection window is made into which a door is placed. Inspection doors can be additionally soundproofed, thereby minimizing the penetration of noise. The finished design will perfectly hide communications and protect the room from extraneous noise.

In most old-style apartments, the bathrooms are not located quite correctly. As a rule, they are located near the kitchen or opposite the living room, and when the family is having dinner or guests arrive, it is problematic to go to the toilet due to the poor soundproofing of the room. If all the work is done correctly, then the next day the result will be noticeable and tangible.

When you plan to soundproof your riser, it's important to pay attention to the little things. The thing is that even the smallest detail can affect the quality. According to experts, before you start choosing, the soundproofing of the fan pipe must be carried out with the right materials, which means it does not hurt to compare the pros and cons. The fact is that if it is necessary to change old cast-iron pipes in an apartment, then it is advisable to initially choose the right materials. For long-term use of the riser without unnecessary problems and noise, preference should be given to silent pipes, which are not inferior to cast iron pipes in terms of characteristics. However, it should be understood that the use of such materials is quite expensive, so not everyone can afford it.

Even in old brick houses with massive cast-iron pipes, you can hear when the upstairs neighbors flush the toilet. What can we say about modern "sockets" with thin-walled plastic sewerage! If you are nearby, in the bathroom, kitchen, corridor, it seems that a stream of sewage can fall right on your head. At night, from the back bedroom, it is also clearly distinguishable when the neighbors visit the closet. To remove these annoyingly indecent sounds will help the complex sound insulation of the sewer riser.

There are special sewer pipes, only they cost, alas, an order of magnitude more expensive than ordinary, thin-walled ones. Noise-absorbing pipes have a multi-layer structure, the outer shells are made of high density polypropylene, the inner layer is a composite of polypropylene and mineral fibers. A special vibration-damping mount has also been developed for them.

If you already install a noise suppression riser, then the fastening to it should be selected appropriate

It is impossible to say that silent pipes completely solve the problem. However, there is definitely some sense from them. If the riser in a multi-storey building is made of plastic pipes with rubber cuffs, it is technically possible to replace it within one floor with noise-absorbing elements, fortunately, they have a standard connection. True, neither the material itself nor the work can be called cheap. The vast majority of customers, having received an estimate for noise-absorbing risers and comparing it with the cost of conventional pipelines, refuse in favor of standard solutions. In the construction of private residential buildings, where the load and volume of discharge into the sewer is not so large, it can be advised to use high-quality pipelines from well-known manufacturers, for example, the Wavin concern, for risers. On the residential floor, you can also put "quiet" ones, if funds allow.

Basic soundproofing methods

Actually, it can not be called soundproofing. These are the basics of laying engineering communications that every plumber should know. But, unfortunately, in our country, knowing the rules does not mean following them.

All pipelines (not just risers) must be securely fastened to building structures. On the riser, the attachment points should be located at least two meters apart. It is better if each element less than one and a half meters long has at least one mount, longer - at least two. Do not use self-made wire clamps as a pipe holder. Only regular elements are used, and preference should be given to steel fastening systems with an elastic rubber gasket. The owners of private houses have the full opportunity to secure the pipelines in the process of laying, but it is also possible to install additional fasteners in the apartment, if necessary.

"Correct" fasteners of the riser, the rubber ring dampens vibration

Seal holes in the ceiling to pass the risers requires accuracy. Building foam will not give the desired result, and the hole may be too large for this. Building codes prescribe the passage of polypropylene pipelines through ceilings in polymer sleeves, the inner diameter of which should be 5-10 mm larger than the riser itself. The gaps are filled with non-combustible material that does not interfere with the vertical movement of the pipe. This is important as it is subject to thermal expansion. Stone wool can serve as such material.

The "correct" design of the passage of the riser through the ceiling, prescribed by the standards

When building a private house, you can do it easier: put an insulation shell on the pipe or wrap polyethylene foam around it so that the layer thickness is 4-5 mm. And monolith.

According to the norms, it is supposed to carry out risers in sleeves through the floors, but an elastic sheath 3-5 mm thick on each side will give no worse effect

Alas, in city apartments you can’t always get to the places of passage through the ceilings. In this case, the builder's best friend is polyurethane foam.

It is not always possible to get close to hard-to-reach places. In this case, it's better than nothing.

At the design stage, it must be taken into account that drain lines should not be adjacent to living rooms. In typical apartments, this rule, fortunately, is respected.

Soundproof sewer tuning

By correctly installing the pipes, we minimize the possible vibration, but we cannot completely solve the problem. To help us - modern methods and materials of sound insulation, "shumka". Good sound insulation of the sewer riser can be achieved by insulating the pipes themselves (which is not always possible to do completely) or the cabinet in which the communications are located (if any). And best of all, both.

 • Closed heat and sound insulating shells for pipelines. They come in different diameters, including the size of the sewer. It is difficult to use rigid foam and mineral wool shells inside the house, they have too large a diameter and are more suitable for outdoor installation. Foamed polyethylene insulation is best suited, while different manufacturers give their products all sorts of beautiful names, but they have the same essence and characteristics. The soft tubular sheath has a longitudinal incision, it must be opened completely, put the insulator on the riser and seal the incision with reinforced construction tape.

Polyethylene foam shells come in different diameters. It is recommended to sound and heat insulate not only risers, but in general all pipes (including plumbing and heating) in a house or apartment

 • The riser can simply be wrapped with rolled polyethylene foam, this is inconvenient, although it often costs a little less.

If you have already decided to wrap the pipes in rolled polyethylene foam, do this with all communications

 • Rolled mineral or glass wool will also work as an external soundproof shell. The only problem is to fix it well.

Glass wool will also do, but it should be fixed better than in the photo, soft material tends to settle over time

 • Soundproof cabinet. In most new apartments, the area where the vertical pipelines are located is separated from the toilet by a frail frame, sheathed at best with chipboard, or even two-millimeter fiberboard. Not surprisingly, the audibility is excellent. During repairs, even cosmetic ones, most owners remodel or strengthen the frame (we do not recommend laying bricks or blocks), sheathe it with plasterboard, tile it or sew it up with plastic panels. Regardless of the type of finish, we recommend soundproofing the cabinet by laying insulation between the frame elements. It can be mineral or glass wool, foamed polyurethane foam, ordinary foam.

Glass wool is a soft material, prone to sagging over time. It should be placed in frame sections with a height of no more than a meter or attached to rigid structures

We especially note that the inspection hatch must also be well soundproofed; it is desirable to place rubber gaskets along its contour, as in the door leaf.

Responsible builders work at this facility: all pipes are carefully sound and heat insulated, a foam sheet has already been inserted into the hatch door frame

Video story about soundproofing sewer pipes

Noise isolation of a sewer riser - in general, the work is simple, it can be done with some diligence on your own. But, as you can see, the problems of noise reduction are associated with the quality of plumbing installation and with carpentry in the process of sewing up communications. Probably the best solution would be to entrust the work to qualified specialists and not forget to monitor their activities.

It is difficult to imagine a modern house without communications that create coziness and comfort. However, in some cases, they can bring some inconvenience. For example, a sewerage system made of plastic pipes is considered an excellent and modern solution, but unlike cast iron pipes, plastic makes more noise. This is especially noticeable if you live in a multi-storey building on the lower floors. However, this is not a reason to refuse the use of such pipes. Soundproofing sewer pipes will help solve this problem. This is exactly what we will talk about in this article.

The reasons

If you understand the cause of the noise of sewer pipes, it will be much easier to fix the problem. Discharged effluent flows from above the riser are the main cause of noise. However, there are a number of other reasons:

 • Sewer pipes are made of a material that is highly conductive to sound.
 • The sewer riser is poorly fixed and dangles under the action of drains.
 • There is an interaction between the flow of air and water inside the pipe.
 • Quick drain.

Noise can be of three types. Each type of noise differs in the nature of the sounds it makes:

 1. Impact noise. This type of sound is caused by loose pipes hitting an adjacent water pipe or wall.
 2. Airborne/atmospheric noise. In this case, the noise is formed when the air flow comes into contact with the moisture droplets that form inside the riser. In another case, pipes make noise when a stream of water falls through a stream of air.
 3. Resonant, vibrational or structural. This type of sound is characterized by the vibration of the entire sewer system. The reason may be a poorly installed system or outdated pipes that need to be replaced. Moreover, fast water flows can create natural vibration in the revision, walls, well and pipes.

It is for these reasons that noise is generated, which can sometimes even be annoying. In some cases, it is enough to simply fix the pipe if it hits the next one. To do this, you must use reliable fasteners such as clamps. If the noise is air/atmospheric, then soundproofing is indispensable. By wrapping the pipe in soundproofing material, you will get rid of unpleasant sounds once and for all.

The noise level of sewer pipes depends on the nature of the sounds emitted.

What determines the volume

The volume of noise depends not only on the speed of draining water through a vertical pipe. This factor is influenced by the material from which the pipe is made. For example, some sewer pipes made of polymer material produce much less sound than others. As for cast iron pipes, they do not make any noise at all. They have a lot of weight, for this reason you will not hear a rumble from them. The greater the wall thickness and the mass of the pipe, the less noise will come from. Why? This is explained by the fact that in this case a large force of the shock wave is needed, the drains will not be able to provide this in any way.

The same cannot be said for plastic pipes. Their weight is small, and the walls are very thin. Therefore, you can often hear resonance with the flow of air and the fall of water. It is for this reason that some decide to use old technologies for the riser and install cast-iron pipes.

Some manufacturers make pipes from noise-absorbing material. Pipes with thicker walls are also produced, which protect against high noise. Such pipes do not need additional wrapping with soundproofing material. So, what to do if the pipe is noisy, we will consider further.

Methods and materials

There are several options for eliminating noise from sewer pipes:

 • structural absorption. Achieved through the laying of silent pipes.
 • Full soundproofing of a single riser.
 • Infrasound cancellation.

The most effective means of combating structural sounds is the installation of sound-absorbing pipes. In all other cases, it is necessary to use sheet or roll materials, for example:

 • piece tiled or patchwork;
 • synthetic roll;
 • soundproof tapes;
 • special mats.

To work with such materials, you do not need to purchase expensive equipment, it is enough to have a sharp knife and adhesive tape. However, a problem arises in cases where sewer risers are carried out outside: soundproofing material will spoil the whole appearance. In this case, you need to think about making a box that will hide the pipes.

Noise-absorbing material can have different types: rolls, shells, cylinders. In addition to sound insulation, modern material also performs another function - thermal insulation. For example, this applies to soundproofing tape. It is sold in roll packs. Piece materials are made from foamed polyethylene, which has the form of pipes. They must be pulled over the pipe, due to which seamless sound insulation is performed. In addition, foam shells and foam casings are used.

For work you will need:

 • insulating material,
 • sharp knife,
 • scotch,
 • mounting clamps with rubber seal,
 • wire.

Depending on the material you purchased, the tool kit may differ, but not significantly.

plastic pipes

Ideally, sewer pipes should be soundproofed during their installation. But you can perform soundproofing work after installation.

Instructions for soundproofing work

If soundproofing is urgently needed, you can use clamps with rubber seals.

 1. If you purchased soundproofing material in the form of pipes, then cut them according to the desired dimensions. It is important that they envelop the entire pipe along the entire diameter. If the material is sheet, measure the sheets so that after wrapping they overlap.
 2. When using soundproofing tape, simply wrap it around the entire riser. If there are gaps, the tape will not fulfill its main purpose.
 3. When using sheet material, it is necessary to use adhesive tape, which will fix the sound insulation.
 4. If the soundproofing material is dense enough, you can use soft wire or plastic fasteners, such as ties, for better fixation. They are installed in increments of 250 mm.
 5. If you plan to build a drywall box, then after wrapping the pipes with soundproofing material, the empty space between them can be filled with polyethylene foam.

Noise insulation with glass wool, mineral wool is unacceptable, since this material cannot be installed in residential premises - it adversely affects the respiratory system, and mounting foam is ineffective!

Roll materials

When using roll material, perform the work in the following order:

 • To determine the amount of material needed, calculate the area of the entire pipe.
 • Cut the material so that it can completely encircle the pipe.
 • The edges should meet end-to-end along the entire length.
 • Fix the material with tape or wire.
 • Wrap the pipe with tape in three layers. A snug fit of tape will reduce resonance.
 • For the best effect, make a drywall box. Fill the empty space with sealant.

Advantages of soundproofing with polyurethane foam

Unpleasant sounds of grumbling and gurgling sewer pipes can be eliminated with polyurethane foam sound insulation (shell). The most important area that needs soundproofing is the cross. It is it that must be isolated with polyurethane foam. Although the price of this material is quite high, the work process will be easy, and the end result will please. Using polyurethane foam, it is possible to soundproof pipes in the most inaccessible places, including bends. Polyurethane foam can also be sold in mats or rolls. Using a foam shell, you cannot achieve the same good sound insulation.

Soundproofing by infrasound

Infrasound is a natural phenomenon that is directly related to low frequency sound waves. This level of sound cannot be perceived by humans. A sewer riser can also make such a sound, especially if the inside of the pipe has growths due to prolonged operation. There are two methods of soundproofing by infrasound.

 1. Partial replacement of the riser.
 2. Artificial noise suppression in pipes along the entire length of the riser.

If you are unable to replace the entire riser, a partial replacement would be ideal.

This work is carried out in the following order:

 • The middle of the pipes is sawn off with a grinder, and the cast-iron crosses are left.
 • The resulting plaque is removed with special chemicals.
 • The plastic pipe is mounted using special transitions.
 • It is recommended to immediately wrap the pipe with soundproofing material.

This technology is also applicable to plastic pipes. But the difference is that the replacement of the riser is carried out completely, including crosses, sockets and knees, starting from the ceiling and ending with the floors.

It's good if your neighbors are also ready to replace the pipes. In this case, the replacement is carried out through the overlap. Although this method is complex and painstaking, as a result you will achieve the best result in the manufacture of a silent sewer system.

Installation of silent pipes

Silent pipes have a number of differences from ordinary plastic pipes. Their structure consists of a three-layer heavy-duty material. Their design provides for a heat and sound insulating layer.

1 layer. Consists of smooth polyurethane. It contains particles of minerals that localize the noise. Such pipes have high strength, and the polyurethane layer prevents corrosion, as well as the negative impact of an aggressive environment.

2 layer. Made of polypropylene with reinforced mineral particles. It is this feature that allows you to block the gurgling and murmur of water pouring from above.

3 layer. Made of heavy-duty polymer material, such as PVC, polypropylene or low-density polyethylene.

Silent pipes are laid using the following technology:

 • The first step is the design and calculation of the desired material. Measurements are taken with a tape measure. Pipes are cut to a given size with a hacksaw.
 • Cut edges should be carefully filed on both sides at an angle of 150°. This will allow easy installation without breaks or dents in the O-rings.
 • When connecting pipes, pay attention to the sealing ring. It should lie flat and in its place.
 • The pipes, both inside and outside, must be completely free of fibrous substances or other contaminants.
 • The valve of the socket is performed using silicone grease, which is applied to the smooth part of the pipe. The pipe is put on until it stops.
 • It is important to mark the points of contact.
 • The pipe extends back by 1 centimeter. This must be done, since under the influence of cold or hot flows, the length of the pipe may vary slightly.
 • Shaped elements are retracted to the stop.

After completing these steps, the pipe is installed vertically. It should be fixed with clamps to the wall so that it does not hang out. The mount can be floating or rigid. The rigid mount must have a rubber o-ring.

If it is necessary to allow a slight movement of the pipe in the longitudinal direction, a floating fixing is used.

This technology allows you to completely eliminate the unpleasant noises that are heard in the sewer riser. But it is used only as a last resort, when all methods for the manufacture of independent sound insulation do not bear fruit or cannot be fulfilled.

Watch a video that tests silent pipes:

If you do the soundproofing work yourself and for the first time, without knowing some of the nuances, you can make simple mistakes that will lead to poor results.

 1. Wrong choice of soundproofing material. For example, some decide to use only mineral wool. As a heater, this is an excellent material, but it is not suitable for soundproofing.
 2. Poorly tightened adhesive tape or other fasteners. Because of this, a small gap is formed between the pipe and the material, which will provoke sound resonance.
 3. Use of clamps without rubber seals.
 4. Installation of a pipe without a sealing gasket.
 5. A small layer of soundproofing material.

All this is very simple, but failure to comply with at least one point can nullify efforts.

Organization of sound insulation using K-phonic material:

Specialization: master in the construction of plasterboard structures, finishing work and laying flooring. Installation of door and window blocks, facade finishing, installation of electrics, plumbing and heating - I can give detailed advice on all types of work.

If you live in an apartment building, then you know firsthand how noisy the sewer riser is when drains pass through it. Some tolerate extraneous sounds for decades, while you can literally get rid of them in a few hours, reducing the noise level at times. I will talk about this in this review, read the article to the end - and you will have a step-by-step action plan in your head.

Description of the workflow

I will talk about all the activities that you will need to carry out, for greater clarity, a diagram is presented, and below I will dwell on each of the aspects in detail:

Preparatory stage

First of all, you need to carefully examine the structure, or rather that part of it that passes through your apartment. Sometimes it may turn out that problems are caused by the fact that the pipes “led” during operation or a lot of deposits accumulated inside. In this case, the best solution would be to replace the old elements with new ones.

When replacing, I advise you to choose special soundproof options, such a pipe is called silent, as it dampens sounds very effectively. The diagram below shows the structure of the product, the inner layer is smooth polypropylene, the middle polymer layer with mineral inclusions to dampen sound waves and the top layer is polypropylene with increased impact resistance.

It is easy to distinguish such a pipe - this type of product is marked in white, you do not need to be a pro to understand that you have a silent option.

If the pipes are in good condition, then you need to check the reliability of the fasteners, the presence of rubber gaskets on the clamps and sleeves in the partitions. Sometimes it makes sense to replace the elements, because over time, the rubber loses its elasticity and becomes hard, which leads to a loss of soundproofing properties.

When the check is done, you can make a list of the necessary materials and components, pay special attention to the choice of soundproofing material, below I will talk about each of the options.

Interfloor ceilings

In practice, the most common situation is when the passage through the interfloor partition is at best clogged with mineral wool or foam, or even not isolated at all. Mineral wool does not dampen sounds very well, and foam is not a noise barrier at all. As for the work on isolating this section, the process looks like this:

 • If you change pipes, then during installation you need to put on a special insulating element, which is a rubber ring that prevents contact of plastic with concrete floors. This seemingly simple element makes it possible to greatly reduce the transmission of sound vibrations to the structure;

 • When the system is installed, it makes no sense to disassemble it.. In this case, you can cut the ring and insert it into place, fixing it either with tape or a piece of twine. It is important that the element does not move and is securely fixed in the right place;
 • Another option is special elements called shells.- they consist of two halves, which are easy to install on an existing system;

 • If you do not have a coupling, then you can get out of the situation by wrapping the pipe with several layers of rubber or other material with good soundproofing characteristics. It is important to exclude contact between plastic and concrete, as well as to soundproof the surface.

Installation of special fasteners

Since sound vibrations are transmitted through metal very, very strongly, this factor must also be excluded if you want to achieve maximum silence. The process of carrying out the work is simple, it will not be difficult to do it yourself:

 • First you need to purchase special clamps, most often a pipe with a diameter of 110 mm is used in the sewer system, it is under it that fasteners are selected. The elements are fixed to the wall by means of stud screws, which can have different lengths, you need to measure the distance of the pipe from the wall in order to determine the optimal size of the connection;

 • Next, you need to drill holes for dowels or anchors, I advise you not to save on clamps, it is better to put more of them, there should not be a distance of more than a meter between the elements, and sometimes the location step is even smaller. Remember one simple rule: the pipe must be held as securely as possible, so as many fasteners are installed as needed for rigidity;
 • The clamps are fixed on a stud screw, after which you can fix them on the pipe, if everything is done correctly, then the riser will not move even with great effort. That's the way it should be.

Do not overtighten the clamp on the pipe. Firstly, you can deform the plastic, and secondly, which is much more likely, crush the rubber gasket and there will be no sense from it - the vibrations from the sewer system will spread along the walls.

Pipe soundproofing

In fact, this is the main stage of work, but it is impossible to achieve the maximum effect without the two stages described above. Only after they can proceed to the insulation of pipes. First of all, you need to decide on the type of materials. I offer you one of three options for your consideration:

Roll materials There are different types of soundproofing coatings on the market. They have a multilayer structure, most often a foamed polymer material is located inside, and the outside surface is covered with foil. This option is good because you can cut off the desired piece and wrap it around any section of the pipe
Polyethylene foam insulator This is a pipe made of soft material, which is simply stretched over the surface of the sewer riser and, tightly adhering to it, provides good sound insulation. Naturally, this solution can only be used when installing new pipes; dismantling an existing riser is at least unreasonable
Styrofoam elements Among builders, this option is called a shell due to the fact that it consists of two halves. This allows you to install insulation on pipes without disassembling them, which is very convenient and practical. The joints are made in the form of grooves to ensure a tighter fit of the halves to each other.

Soundproofing sewer pipes is quite simple, the workflow depends on the material chosen. As for the main recommendations, they are as follows:

 • First of all, free up the space around the pipe, nothing should interfere with your work. Also wipe the pipe so that it is free of dirt, debris and dried pieces of mortar, which often get on the surface during plastering and puttying;
 • If rolled material is used, then a piece is cut off of such a size that you wrap the riser and make a small overlap. The soundproofing material is located with the shiny part outward, it can be fixed either with adhesive tape or plastic clamps, it is important that the material is held very tightly;

 • When using a sound insulator made of polyethylene foam, it is carefully stretched over the pipe before it is installed, after which the elements are produced and the material is spread over the surface. For the best connection, I also advise you to use plastic clamps, they will fix the insulator on the pipe;

 • Finally, the shell-shaped insulation is the easiest to use, you take two halves, carefully combine them with each other and fix the element with tape or a collar.

As you can see, the instructions for the work are extremely simple, it is important to do everything carefully and use high-quality materials. If you don’t like the look of the pipe, then make a drywall box, for this a metal profile frame is made around the riser, then it is sheathed and you get a column. The main thing - do not forget to make a hatch or door at the location of the revision, otherwise, if you need to clean the pipe, you will have to destroy part of the finish.

The space inside the box can be filled with soundproofing material, the same polyethylene foam or foam sheets, cut into pieces of the desired configuration. This will allow you to achieve just a great effect, the sound will be extinguished almost completely and the room will always be quiet.

What not to do when soundproofing a pipe

I decided to dedicate a separate section to errors, since they are very common and most often this is caused by the fact that people simply do not know the properties of some materials and perform poor work. So remember a few simple rules:

 • Mineral wool, as well as mounting foam, are not suitable for soundproofing work. These materials are great for insulation, but they do not hold sound well, so their use has a minimal effect;

 • All insulating elements must fit snugly against the pipe. It was not for nothing that I wrote about fixing with clamps or tape, try to ensure that the material fits as well as possible, the level of sound absorption depends on this. Do not spare the adhesive tape and wrap the riser as much as necessary;
 • There should be no gaps between the soundproofing elements, try to completely cover the surface. If necessary, you can fill in the voids either, or cut out pieces of soundproofing material and glue them with any composition that is suitable for this purpose.

Do not save on the quality of soundproofing material. Yes, its price is higher than that of simple heaters, but it also performs its functions many times better. Such savings will lead to the fact that you will spend the work in vain - spend time and money, and the noise will remain almost the same.

Conclusion

Any person can soundproof a sewer pipe, you don’t need to be a plumber, everything is simple and clear, the main thing is to follow all the recommendations from the review and use good materials. The video in this article will help you understand the topic even better, and if something is not clear to you, then feel free to ask questions in the comments.

Soundproofing a sewer riser in a multi-storey building is quite feasible, but even before starting any work, you need to clearly understand that completely getting rid of the sounds emitted by a sewer riser is a rather troublesome event. Most often, noise isolation does not mean getting rid of noise, but only reducing it to an acceptable, comfortable level.

Noise isolation of the sewer riser methods

In fact, the set of such methods is very limited and, depending on the specific situation, only one of them can be applied, but the most effective soundproofing of the sewer riser is when combined, mutually used, all methods or their combinations.

Soundproofing the sewer riser with noise-absorbing pipes

Unlike standard sewer PVC risers, with dimensions of 110 × 2.7 mm, such pipes are distinguished by a thicker wall (3.4-5.3 mm), greater weight (due to the use of mineral filler), color (from white to light gray) and cost (830-1300 rubles / m) Here are the well-known manufacturers of these products - Politek, Rehau, Waving, Ostendorf.

According to the manufacturers, compared to a polypropylene pipe, the noise level will decrease from 4 to 12.8 dB, but this does not mean at all that the riser will stop making sounds, and there is still the problem of structural noise. You can read about the difference in noise and their assessment in this.

additional materials

Although we talk about the sewer riser as a free-standing pipe, in fact, this is not the case. In addition to the pipe itself, the design of the sewer riser consists of at least: a three-bell cross, a revision with a socket, 1-4 clamps for plumbing pipes.

Given the location of the sewer riser, the choice of such materials is limited. The most convenient for installation are soft products made in the form of: tapes, rolls, individual segments. I will list the materials used: polyethylene foam, pierced fiberglass canvas, extruded polystyrene foam, various mineral-based cotton wool, construction felt, acoustic foam rubber.

Unfortunately, all the advantages of these materials are limited by ease of installation. Possessing good thermal insulation properties, sound insulation is more of a side effect. This is indirectly recognized by the manufacturers themselves, for example, the Energoflex company, in good faith promises only to reduce the noise level.

The application technology is simple. The material is applied, wound, excess is removed. Mounting perforated or adhesive flexible tape is used for fixing. That, in fact, is all. Not very beautiful, not effective enough, but better than not at all.

Soundproofing the sewer with a coverboxes

This approach allows us to solve two problems at once: to reduce the level of noise coming from the sewer riser and to hide the aesthetically unattractive part of the plumbing equipment. It is not difficult to make a box using metal profiles. The technology has been worked out and differs little from the manufacture of soundproof partitions. It is more difficult to think over a successful configuration and design of the fence, organically fitting into the interior of the room.

For those who forgot or did not know, let me remind you

 1. The use of an independent frame.
 2. Filling the interior space with sound-absorbing material. When choosing a filler, keep in mind that mounting foam, polystyrene (polystyrene) are transparent to airborne noise, and mineral wool (any) can cause other problems, but with health.
 3. Double or triple cladding. For sheathing, you can use moisture-resistant gypsum board or moisture-resistant plywood, but it is better to use a glass-magnesite sheet (SML), whose sound insulation index is much higher (44 dB for GKL 32).
 4. The use of vibrosuspension and elastic pads at the interface of the structure. Most often, you can get by with pieces of rubber or unused pieces of linoleum.
 5. Seal joints and cracks with sealant. For this, it is not at all necessary to buy a special acoustic sealant, a regular silicone sealant will do.

Soundproofing sewers with closed soundproof shell

This design is arranged on the principle of "pipe in pipe". As an outer casing, you can use a polyethylene pipe with subsequent refinement, cutting into pieces convenient for installation and making a vertical cut to put on the riser. Alternatively, use polyethylene foam pipe insulation, such as Energoflex Super 160x20.

Unlike the second method, the outer pipe is taken larger. So, if the insulated pipe has a diameter of 110 mm, then PE SDR 21 160 × 7.7 mm is suitable, and the resulting volume (7.3 mm per radius) is filled with a moisture-resistant mineral filler, ordinary quartz sand.

As the practice of manufacturing and operation has shown, this approach is different: absolute efficiency, low cost and the best adaptation to specific conditions. Unfortunately, when making soundproofing for a sewer pipe in this way, it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to maintain the integrity of the structure throughout, and this significantly affects the result.

How to deal with structure-borne noise

Structural noise is transmitted through the structural elements of the building. I will show this using the example of a working power tool, in an apartment located two floors above yours. In a chain: sound source → floor slab → sewer riser, the sound will appear in your apartment in the form of howling, rattling noises, reproduced by a pipe for no reason.

Partially eliminate structural noise will help the correct installation of the riser. Here, the concept of “correct” means the use of vibration decoupling in places where the sewer riser passes through the floor slabs, and for this, at least you need to enlist the goodwill and readiness for interaction of neighbors in the riser.
