How to combine a toilet and a bathroom in Khrushchev. We are renovating a separate bathroom and toilet in Khrushchev. Proper bathroom lighting

Repairing a bathroom in Khrushchev is not an easy task, and this is due not only to the extremely small areas of the premises in these series of houses. The problem is also that over the course of many years of operation, all elements of the building's structure have worn out and require a special approach when carrying out certain alterations.

However, even such an old apartment can be put in order, bringing it as close as possible to modern standards of living comfort. The task in our time is somewhat simplified by the fact that in the construction market you can find all the necessary materials and tools, plumbing accessories and household appliances.

Problems of repairing premises in "Khrushchev"

The architects who once designed the series of these houses had a specific goal: to provide as many families as possible with separate, albeit very modest housing. Therefore, one could only dream of maximum comfort, but at that time, the residents who moved into such new apartments had no bounds for joy. Today, the demands of new homeowners are vastly different. Therefore, every family that has acquired an apartment in a Khrushchev-era building tries to repair it as soon as possible in order to “squeeze the maximum” out of the existing conditions.

So, the difficulties in carrying out repairs in the bathrooms of houses of these series are as follows:

  • One of the problems faced by the owners of such similar housing is the old one, designed only for installing a small bath, toilet, sink, and sometimes a gas column in it. Or divided, but its premises are so small that it is difficult even for a person of quite ordinary build to turn around in them. Nowadays, due to the increased needs of homeowners, the bathroom cannot do without various cabinets or shelves for cosmetics, as well as household chemicals. In addition, many owners are trying to find a place to place a washing machine.

  • The second problem that awaits new residents of old apartments is the dilapidated state of communication highways, since the youngest Khrushchev-style houses are no less than 40 years old. Therefore, pipes, both sewer and water, without any options need to be replaced. If you make a beautiful repair, leaving the old lines intact, then all efforts to equip the premises will most likely come to naught quite quickly, since leaks will begin to occur in one place or another in the wiring. Therefore, if a major overhaul is already underway, then it is better not to save on this and upgrade all engineering communications without exception.
  • The third problem is uneven, crumbling walls, which at best are lined with low-quality ceramic tiles, and at worst are completely painted with creepy green or blue oil paint. Therefore, in order to put such surfaces in order and achieve the aesthetic effect of the new cladding, you will have to make a lot of efforts to process and level them.

But all these obstacles on the way to comfort and coziness are quite surmountable even for a family with an average income.

bathroom project

General rules for drafting a project

In order to get the desired result and not make mistakes, before purchasing all the materials necessary for the renovation, it is necessary to have an idea of \u200b\u200bhow the reconstructed bathroom will look like. To do this, it makes sense to work hard on a future project. Moreover, it is desirable to make even several options, successively “trying on” various forms of bathtubs or shower cabins for a specific area. After making sure that the project fully meets the needs of the family, you can proceed to the next preparatory stages.

There are several options for rebuilding the bathroom, which are often used by the owners of "Khrushchev":

  • The first option is the simplest, and consists in rearranging plumbing accessories so that the available space is used most rationally.

  • Second option. If the toilet and bathroom are separated, then you can combine them into one room, which will increase the choice of design and placement of everything you need by increasing the total area.

  • The third option is more complicated, but also possible for implementation - this is the expansion of the bathroom through a corridor or hallway, if their area allows. How to expand the area, attracting not much needed corridor space, will depend on the layout of the apartment.

However, it must be remembered that any redevelopment in an apartment of a multi-storey building, associated with the dismantling or erection of walls, requires coordination with the organizations controlling the operation of buildings. Therefore, if a decision is made to carry out such actions, it will be necessary to go through difficult procedures for legalizing the planned actions.

Unauthorized redevelopment of the premises of the apartment is unacceptable!

Unskilled actions can drastically reduce the strength of building structures, disrupt the integrity or efficiency of engineering communications, endanger the lives of all residents of the house. What needs to be done, and who should be contacted with these questions, is detailed in the article on our website.

Some Tricks to Help with Bathroom Planning

If you do not want to violate administrative legislation and do not want to get involved in bureaucratic obstacles, then in order to expand the available space, you can use other methods.

Experienced designers are able to turn even a small bathroom into a comfortable room for use, rationally using every centimeter of space and special techniques. In addition, some manufacturers of modern household appliances and plumbing do not lag behind designers in their developments, providing for the installation of their products in the most unexpected places. It also saves a lot of space in tight spaces.

Naturally, given the large weight of the device and considerable vibration loads, the strength of the brackets or the base of the niche must correspond to it.

Another design that saves space is a wall-mounted or closable finish. The advantage of this complex is a narrow water tank, which has a width of half that of a conventional drain. And as a result, the toilet bowl located directly on the wall will take up much less precious space.

Of the design techniques that are acceptable for small bathrooms, we can distinguish:

  • Color game. Light and white shades will visually make the space more voluminous.
  • If a heating radiator is installed in the bathroom, it makes sense to change it to one that has a more presentable appearance and is more practical for this room.

  • The space under the bathroom can be used very functionally, especially since it will facilitate the task of decorating it. For this purpose, special screen shelves are sold, which not only decorate such a problematic area with aesthetic doors, but also allow it to be used rationally. If there are no such products in specialized stores, a creative owner will be able to make such a screen on his own. For example, by making a reliable frame and lining it with plastic clapboard.

  • The sink practically does not take up space if it is placed above the bathroom, choosing the shapes of these plumbing fixtures that are well suited to each other.
  • In some cases, it makes sense to abandon the sink altogether, that is, use a bath while washing. But this will not be the most convenient option. And not the most practical in terms of care.
  • Mirrors will help visually expand the space. In a small room, one large mirror will be enough, which will reflect the opposite wall of the room. And it, in turn, is best tiled with floral ornaments.

  • A suspended glass ceiling with lighting and a spatial pattern will also help make the room visually much larger.
  • To make the room look more spacious, a standard-sized bath can be changed to a more compact version. Fortunately, today there is no problem with the offer of these accessories in a wide range both in form and material. In addition, a small shower cabin is also suitable for this purpose, which will bring a modern accent to the interior. If a bath is needed for bathing children or doing laundry, then you can choose a shower with a deep tray.
  • You should not plan to install some large-sized pieces of furniture in the bathroom, as even one of their appearance will make the room small.

When drawing up a project, all efforts should be directed to the maximum preservation of free space. Having chosen an option that suits the organization of space, it is best to do it in color. This is important - the shades of the cladding play a significant role in interior design.

Materials for facing surfaces in the bathroom

For cladding the walls of the bathroom, several types of materials are suitable that meet the criteria for this room. These qualities include moisture resistance, safety, ease of cleaning their surfaces, as well as aesthetic appearance.

  • The most affordable material for walls and rooms is moisture-resistant paint. But it must be applied on a perfectly flat and smooth surface, otherwise the proper design effect will not work.

It is not necessary to make the surfaces plain. You can choose a few well-matched colors and apply them in the form of squares, stripes or other stylized patterns.

Another option could be a pattern applied by rolling onto a painted plain surface.

However, leveling work will also require certain costs. Therefore, choosing paint for cladding, in order to save money, it is still worth calculating all the costs. That is, including the cost of work to bring the foundation into perfect condition.

  • Another budget option for finishing are, which have recently become more and more popular. This is due to the affordability of the price, ease of installation and a variety of decorative design. The cladding does not require a perfectly smooth surface, but it must be smooth and durable. This will allow you not to install the crate, which will reduce the area of \u200b\u200bthe room, and the panels will have to be fixed directly to the wall, fixing them with glue.

This material is also suitable for arranging a false ceiling, the frame of which will level the surface and hide some communication details.

  • A more expensive, but also more durable material for wall and floor cladding in the bathroom is ceramic tile. She remains in the top of popularity for more than a dozen years. Today, the range of ceramic finishes is so large that sometimes it is difficult to choose it. Therefore, it is worth trying several color options in the project. Then it will be easier to navigate in the store, choosing the optimal collection.

To veneer the surfaces with ceramic tiles, they will also have to be put in order. Experienced craftsmen are able to even out small deformations of the planes of walls and floors with the help of tiles, adjusting the direction of the laying by uneven application of tile adhesive.

The advantage of this material is the ability to give the surface also good waterproofing qualities. But this effect can only be achieved with high-quality masonry and the use of hydrophobic durable

  • To finish the ceiling surface in bathrooms, innovative tension systems are increasingly being used, which are distinguished by the highest variety of decorative designs - from plain colors of the desired shade to photographs with excellent image resolution. Thanks to such a wide range, the stretch fabric can be matched to wall cladding made of any material and having different color schemes. The advantage can be called their high moisture resistance. A well-stretched canvas not only does not allow evaporation to pass to the main floor, but in the event of an emergency it is able to retain water that has spilled onto it from above, thereby preventing catastrophic consequences for the rest of the finish.
  • For the floor in the bathroom, a self-leveling one is perfect, which performs several functions at once - levels, waterproofs and decorates the surface. The cost of pouring such a floor is quite high, but it can be called “eternal” without much exaggeration, since it will not lose its qualities under any external influence. The coating is made on the basis of epoxy resins, which are considered an environmentally friendly material.

If there is a desire to save as much as possible on the implementation of repair work, it is necessary to choose those varieties of them, the installation of which you can handle yourself by studying the relevant instructions.

After it has been determined what materials will be used to level the surfaces and their cladding, based on the previously drawn up project, in which the exact parameters of the room should be set with the arrangement of all the necessary materials, you can proceed to counting everything needed for repairs.

Stages of repair work - step by step

In this section of the article, the stages of repair work will be considered with a brief description of their implementation. After studying this information, you can determine whether it is possible to reconstruct the premises on your own, or it is better to invite professionals.

So, a few words need to be said about the features of bathrooms in Khrushchev-built houses, which have not been remodeled and overhauled for a long time, sometimes even from the moment they began to operate.

As a rule, the walls of the room are still lined with Soviet-era tiles, the surface of which is covered with small cracks and chips, and some decoration elements have completely fallen off. The towel dryer is an ordinary steel pipe bent into a U-shaped loop, which is connected to the riser with unaesthetically looking welds, often leaking.

The wall separating the bathroom and the kitchen is equipped with the notorious, incomprehensibly necessary window, which many owners previously sealed with a matte film or, removing the glass, covered the opening with plywood.

As a rule, they have a terrifying look. Sometimes, when they are dismantled, they simply fall apart in their hands, since during their operation their internals have become thinner under the influence of corrosion and have lost all strength.

The plaster of the walls, especially in their lower part, under the constant influence of moisture, lost its strength and began to flake off and crumble, so dirt constantly appears on the floor in the form of a cement-sand wet mass.

If the bathroom is in such a state, then a major overhaul in it is simply necessary. In order to save money, repairs can be done with your own hands, choosing materials with affordable prices, which are plentiful in hardware stores today.

IllustrationBrief description of the operations performed
Bathroom remodeling begins with shutting off the water supply.
Then - a rather dirty and hard work to free up space from outdated plumbing accessories. The dismantled bathtub, toilet bowl and sink are removed from the room and usually melted down once, otherwise the rest of the work will be very difficult.
The next step is to clean the surfaces of the walls and floor from old tiles or other decorative coatings.
The tile is easily removed using a perforator, in which a special chisel attachment is installed. There is no such tool - you can remove it manually.
Usually this stage of work does not cause difficulties and passes quickly. True, there will be plenty of garbage, and the hard work of taking it to the landfill too.
If the walls are planned to be leveled by applying ordinary "wet" plaster, then after removing the decorative coating on the surface, it is recommended to apply notches. Most often, notches are applied with an ax.
The old coating, as well as the debris formed during the application of notches, should be immediately removed from the room, as deposits of bags will become a serious obstacle to the further process of arranging the bathroom.
Next, the dismantling of water and sewer pipes.
Quite often, having assessed the condition of the main section of the sewer, it is necessary to remove it completely. To carry out this work, you will have to make peace and agree with the lower and upper neighbors, since the new pipe will need to be cut into the common house main, and the connection of the riser elements, as a rule, is located just below the ceiling surface or 200 ÷ 250 mm above the floor.
When removing the pipe, a through hole is necessarily formed in the floor slab, which will subsequently need to be sealed.
In any case, it is best to change the entire riser at once.
If the hole turned out to be wide, then after installing the pipe, having installed the formwork from below, pour it with concrete mortar.
Small gaps remaining around the pipe can be easily filled with mounting foam.
It is important to correctly calculate the installation height of a tee in a new riser, with which a toilet bowl and a drain pipe will be connected to it - a line from the bathroom, sink and kitchen sink.
The next step is to replace the water pipes.
The old wiring is removed completely and a new one is installed, for which metal-plastic or polypropylene pipes are most often used.
If it is planned to hide all the “beauty” of the wiring, then grooves are cut in the wall, into which the pipes will be hidden. It is necessary to deepen the pipes so that their outer side is located at least flush with the main surface of the wall.
If in the future it is planned to level the surface with plasterboard sheets, then when chiseling channels for installing pipes, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of this “dry plaster” (12 mm), that is, make the chisels not too deep.
The process of replacing any pipes is quite complicated for a beginner, and if there is no experience in plumbing installation, then it would be better to invite an experienced specialist who will make a reliable hermetic connection of both the sewer riser section and the plumbing pipes.
If you plan to install a washing machine in the bathroom, or simply increase the number of sockets by spreading them in different places, then for installation of wiring in the surfaces of the walls and ceiling, wires are also equipped.
You don’t have to scratch the floor slab if the design provides for a suspended ceiling structure that will hide all the unsightly electrical wiring.
For fire safety purposes, all electrical cables should be enclosed in a special corrugated insulating tube.
Before proceeding to the next stage of work, the surfaces of the room should be strengthened with a deep penetration primer with an antiseptic effect.
The composition is applied with a roller in two, and sometimes three layers, each of which requires good drying.
Well, if old mold spots are clearly visible on the walls, then you will first have to carry out a “treatment” with potent compounds, then carry out a thorough cleaning of these foci, and then perform priming.
If the bathroom walls are in a deplorable state, they will have to be worked on by leveling them with plaster or “dry plaster” (drywall).
If a simpler, second option is chosen, then it is necessary to choose only moisture-resistant drywall and fix it directly on the wall using a special mounting adhesive. Some craftsmen use mounting foam with a low coefficient of expansion to fix the sheets. The use of this drywall installation technology is possible if the unevenness of the walls is no more than 20 ÷ 30 mm.
When leveling the walls, a box is usually immediately mounted, covering the vertically located pipes of the riser.
If the communication lines are already located in a niche, then it is also recommended to close it with drywall, fixing it flush with the main surface of the wall.
To equip a drywall box, you will need to mount a frame structure made of a galvanized metal profile around the riser pipes.
When installing it, do not forget to provide a special revision window - for access to water meters and taps that shut off the water supply.
Aligned walls (whether with drywall or ordinary plaster) should be well primed again.
In order not to waste time, a primer can be applied to the surface before installing the false ceiling frame.
While the walls are being prepared for further finishing, you can start installing the frame crate for the false ceiling.
The frame can be made from a bar 30 × 40 mm or a galvanized metal profile. Here it is necessary to take into account that the profile will be cheaper, but it is easier to fix the panel ceiling to the wooden elements of the crate.
Using the frame, you can not only mask the wiring, but also level the surface of the ceiling if it is not even enough. Therefore, before starting to fix it, it is necessary to make markings on the walls and beat off lines along it, which will also become the top level for wall cladding.
Some masters prefer to finish the walls first, and then mount the ceiling. In this case, the sequence does not matter much, since the junction of the vertical and horizontal surfaces will be covered with a decorative corner or a ceiling plinth.
The next step is leveling the floor.
Before proceeding with these works, the floors should also be primed with a composition, best of all - having the effect of penetrating waterproofing.
When the soil dries out, along the entire perimeter of the room, at the junction of the floor and walls, a damper tape is set, the width of which should be 25 ÷ 30 mm greater than the thickness of the future leveling screed. This material is designed to compensate for the required space for the solidified solution, with its thermal expansion.
If the floors are relatively even, then a self-leveling floor with a waterproofing effect can be used to level the floor.
If a steel bathtub is purchased for installation for reasons of economy, then while the bulk self-leveling floor dries, you can work on improving its characteristics.
In order for the water drawn into the metal bath to retain a high temperature for a long time, as well as to reduce the noise level from the water drawn into it, mounting foam is applied to the outside, which has an average coefficient of expansion.
It is not difficult to apply this layer, it will slightly increase the weight of the product, but add comfort during its operation.
When the screed dries and is ready for tiling, markings for laying tiles are applied to its surface. It is better to start the installation of this material from the door of the room, so it will be possible to avoid a large number of cut elements that will be in plain sight.
For flooring, it is recommended to use floor tiles with a relief surface, as they are safer for the bathroom - not as slippery when wet.
The seams between large tiles should have a width of 5 ÷ 7 mm. Compliance with a single thickness of the joints is achieved by installing special plastic cross-calibrators between ceramic products, or special elements of tile leveling systems.
The period of hardening of tile adhesive before the possibility of movement on the coating is indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging. After waiting for this time, you can proceed to grouting the joints between the tiles.
The joints are filled with a composition specially designed for this purpose, which, when solidified, guarantees the waterproofing of the coating.
The grout usually dries in about a day. After that, you can move on to wall cladding, which can also be made with ceramic tiles or PVC panels.
Before starting to finish the wall, it must be marked out by determining the height of the bath - this will be the line from which the facing of vertical surfaces usually begins. And even better - so that the seam is about 20 ÷ 30 mm below the level of the bathroom - then it will not constantly get wet.
Very often, in order to save money on the walls hidden by the bathroom, the owners do not lay tiles at all, although experienced craftsmen strongly recommend doing this. For example, for this purpose, you can use the old finishing material, even if it has an unpresentable appearance. This is not scary - it will be assigned not so much a decorative as a protective function.
To simplify the task, a guide profile is fixed along the broken line, on which the first row of tiles will rest.
It is clear that the guide is fixed temporarily, and it is removed after the glue under the tile on the top of the wall has completely hardened.
Laying tiles usually starts from the corner of the bathroom, which first catches your eye when you enter the room.
To determine whether it will be possible to lay out a row of whole tiles, they should be placed on the guide in compliance with equal seams, the width of which should be 1.5 ÷ 2 mm. however, all this can be calculated in advance on the diagram.
If the row will consist not only of solid tiles, but also cut ones, then it is better to place them in a less noticeable area of the wall.
It happens that it is possible to do without cutting tiles by applying decorative inserts of the desired width.
But this should also be thought out in advance, and not spontaneously, during installation.
Laying is carried out on tile adhesive, which is applied to the walls (some prefer to tile) and spread with a notched trowel. Having tiled the front wall, you can proceed to laying tiles on the side surfaces, also starting work from the corner. We will not talk much about this, since a separate very detailed article of our portal is devoted to the process in the bathroom.
It is quite difficult due to inexperience to cut round holes in the tile for sockets, pipe penetrations. About how correctly described in detail in the article on our site dedicated to this topic.
The opening for the inspection window is closed with a special door, which has a secure frame and an easy-to-open sash. You can “plant” this part on the “liquid nails” glue.
At the same stage, you can install sockets.
The next step in the example under consideration is the sheathing of the suspended ceiling frame with PVC panels.
The joint between the tiles and the panels can be arranged in two ways - by fixing the starting profile along the perimeter of the crate, into which the edges of the panels are pushed, or after fixing the lining to the joint, a decorative plastic corner or plinth is fixed with “liquid nails”.
Before installing the panels into which the lighting fixtures will be embedded, markings are made on them, and holes of the required size are cut out along it. They can be cut with a knife or an electric drill with a “crown” nozzle of the desired diameter.
After the glue and grout of the cladding are completely dry, all plumbing accessories are installed and connected to the water and sewer lines.
The bath takes its place first, as it still needs to be worked on, closing the unsightly space below.
This work also begins with markup. On the surface of the floor, under the outer edge of the bathtub, a line is beaten off along which the guide profile is mounted.
Then, vertical racks are fixed to the opposite walls, which, in the lower part of the frame being created, are installed in a metal profile.
Further, the resulting structure is covered with an upper horizontal profile, after which the crate is reinforced with additional three to four vertical posts. Additionally, they can be interconnected by an average profile, fixed to the uprights from the inside.
Instead of metal profiles, a wooden beam treated with an antiseptic can be used to create a frame.
In this version, an inspection window is provided in the bath casing to control the siphon.
If you plan to equip such an opening, then it must be provided for at the stage of creating the frame.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe finished frame is sheathed with moisture-resistant drywall, which is attached to the profiles using metal screws. After that, the surface of the skin is covered with a primer and dried.
The final stage of laying tiles is facing the plasterboard screen under the bathroom with it.
When the screen is equipped, it remains to install the toilet, fixing it to the floor with special fasteners that come with it complete with the product, and at the same time connecting it to the sewer.
Then it is necessary to install the sink, connect the faucets, drain tank and other plumbing equipment. A mirror, hangers and other necessary accessories are hung.
A towel dryer is connected to the hot water pipes brought to the surface of the wall, which is hung on brackets specially fixed on the wall.

As a result, the “zachuhannaya” bathroom in the old Khrushchev will find a “new youth”.

And, traditionally, at the end of the publication - a short video showing another option for repairing a bathroom in Khrushchev

Video: An example of a bathroom renovation in Khrushchev

To make such a restroom comfortable and beautiful, it is important to choose the right finish for the walls, floor and ceiling, as well as rationally arrange the plumbing.

Actually, the repair itself in the houses of the old Soviet construction is also carried out according to certain rules. Read below how to decorate a small Khrushchev bathroom, as well as how its design should be.

Bathroom finishing

You can decorate a compact Khrushchev bathroom with absolutely any moisture-resistant materials. Usually the walls are tiled or sheathed with PVC panels. Sometimes green drywall or mosaics are also used.

Tiling

Important: To make the surfaces even, plastering is carried out according to beacons.

The tile is glued with preliminary marking. First, the walls are finished, then the ceiling and at the final stage the floor. The adhesive is applied with a notched trowel.

Advice: It is better to lay tiles on the floor diagonally or at an angle of 30 degrees. This will visually expand the room.

Grouting is done with a matching color paste.

Finishing with plastic panels

The advantage of this material is that the alignment procedure before its installation is not necessary. This reduces repair time and reduces its cost.

Plastic panels are a great option for covering uneven surfaces in a Khrushchev bathroom

Repair of a combined bathroom in Khrushchev using PVC panels is done as follows:

  • A frame made of wooden slats 40x20 mm is attached to the walls.

Attach PVC panels to usually wooden frame

  • The ceiling plinth and corner elements are installed.
  • The floor plinth is installed.
  • To fix the panels, clamps or clips are used.

How to install plastic panels on clips

The same technology is used to repair a shared bathroom in Khrushchev.

Advice: The frame can be assembled not from rails, but from a special PVC profile. The risk of deformation of the crate as a result of exposure to moisture during its use will be reduced to zero.

Other materials

Mosaic is mounted in much the same way as tiles. Sticking is made on the leveled surface. GCR is sewn onto the frame. Plastering is done with a spatula in several layers.

The plaster is applied to drywall with a spatula in thin layers.

Arrangement of plumbing

In Khrushchev, it does not allow to turn around in terms of the placement of plumbing fixtures. Arrange them compactly, taking into account the standards of SNiP.

The minimum free space in front of the sink and bath is 70 cm, in front of the toilet bowl - 60 cm. The functional area next to the washing machine is 90 cm. The distance between the plumbing fixtures themselves is at least 25 cm.

Ways to install plumbing in a Khrushchev bathroom

If Khrushchev is located on a short wall, it is customary to install a bathtub or shower stall opposite it. If the entrance is arranged on a long one - a toilet bowl / sink group. The washing machine is usually placed in this case against the wall adjacent to the door.

Bathroom (design photo in Khrushchev). Opposite the door to the toilet, a sink and toilet are installed

Important: Moving the toilet from the riser is highly discouraged. Even a slight lengthening of the drain pipe will lead to frequent blockages.

The most suitable toilet option for a small Khrushchev bathroom is hanging. Bathtubs and showers are often installed in corners. The towel holder can be hung next to the sink.

Towel holder can be nailed next to the sink

In Khrushchev, separate from the bathroom, it is such that nothing can usually be put inside except for the toilet bowl. However, if the width of the toilet is more than a meter, you can try to hang the sink on the wall.

In the Khrushchev toilet, you can try to place a small sink

What should be the design

In Khrushchev, as well as separate, it is selected taking into account some recommendations. The main thing when choosing a design is to try to make the room as harmonious as possible.

The color scheme for finishing small bathrooms is usually light.

Idea: To keep the restroom from looking faded, you can use brighter colors. For example, orange, pink or blue. Often the bathrooms of Khrushchevs are also decorated with tiles of several different colors.

Photo design of a bathroom in Khrushchev. If desired, a small restroom can be decorated and brighter

It would be a good idea to decorate the interior of the combined bathroom in Khrushchev with a large number of mirrors. This will also increase the volume of the room. The lighting is bright.

The use of mirrors allows you to significantly increase the area of \u200b\u200bthe small Khrushchev bathroom visually.

Idea: To diversify the interior of a small restroom, you can use plumbing of an unusual shape or color. Bathrooms with mosaic or tiled panels on the walls also look very interesting.

You can decorate the Khrushchev bathroom in an original way by installing unusual plumbing or decorating the walls with panels

The most suitable design options for Khrushchev bathrooms are minimalism and hi-tech. If desired, you can arrange a compact toilet in Provence or retro style.

Decoration in the style of minimalism

The characteristic features of this direction are discreet colors (beige, brown, gray) and a minimum of decorative elements. For wall decoration, plain tiles of no more than two different shades are suitable. Light fixtures of a modest design will look very good.

Hi-tech style

When decorating such a restroom, a lot of mirrors, glass and chrome elements are used. The color scheme is usually not too catchy. Mostly grayscale. A great example of high-tech style restroom design:

Destination Provence

Shades in the "French" dressing room are used light, pastel. Walls are best finished with plain tiles, complemented by a border with a delicate pattern. Often mirrors and elegant lamps are hung in such bathrooms.

Idea: Put on a shelf under the sink or decorate plumbing "for porcelain". Hang curtains in a box or flower on the window.

Light colors, textiles and elegant decor are the characteristic features of the Provence style.

Retro style

The colors of such a restroom are usually dominated by brown, dark gray and white. In this case, the method of contrasts is widely used. For example, you can combine a brown wood-look hanging set with white walls, floors and ceilings. An example of a neat retro-style restroom:

Effective little bathroom. Photo of a combined restroom in Khrushchev in retro style

This method, by the way, is a good answer to the question of how to divide a combined restroom into zones.

Idea: If the set does not fit in the bathroom, you can simply harmoniously combine brown and white in the decoration.

When in Khrushchev, you should pay maximum attention to the selection of finishes, properly arrange plumbing and try to make the design in the same style. The result is a very beautiful and functional restroom.

We bring to your attention a report on the renovation of the bathroom and toilet in Khrushchev, in the house of series 1-515.

The bathroom is 1.35 by 1.5. Toilet 0.8 by 1.5.

The main idea of the repair is to put the bathroom and toilet in order, to give the premises a modern interior, to carry out all the roughing and finishing work with high quality.

Draft stage of repair

First of all, we clean the walls from the existing coating, remove the plastic from the walls, clean the walls from paint. There is an old small tile on the floor, we will also dismantle it.

In such old houses, plumbing is very often laid right in the wall. Access to pipes in this case is very difficult. We had a problem with a pipe for a heated towel rail - how and where to hide it. We did not begin to open half of the wall and move the pipe deeper. This is laborious, expensive and wrong (we violate the integrity of the supporting structure).

The best option is to close the pipe with a box. And access to the taps will be possible in the box in the toilet.

There were windows in the toilet and bathroom, we sewed them up with sheets of drywall.

All the walls were leveled and prepared for tiles and painting. In the bathroom and toilet, boxes were assembled for a sanitary cabinet with doors, for ventilation, and for a pipe for a heated towel rail. Before laying the floor tiles, a screed was made on the floor.

Tiles in the bathroom and toilet

Let's start tiling. Wall tiles in the toilet are laid out seven rows to the floor, then the walls are painted. In the bathroom, we start the tiles from the level of the bathtub, we also raise the tiles by seven rows, ending with a decorative ceramic border. The tile has a size of 15x40, from the Kerama Marazzi series Neapolitan collection.

wall painting

The walls in the bathroom and toilet are combined: ceramic tiles and painting. Before painting, the walls were primed and puttied twice, glued with a paint grid.

Any repair in Khrushchev apartments (and the bathroom is no exception) is a very responsible matter that will require rational thinking in addition to taste. Usually, bathrooms in apartments of this type have an area of no more than 5 square meters, and even not a very convenient layout.

All this greatly complicates the repair of the bathroom with their own hands to a non-professional.

The small area of the bathroom also complicates the process of selecting and arranging plumbing and furniture. About the same, to install a washing machine is often not discussed at all.

However, not everything is so sad, and even in a small bathroom you can create a cozy interior if you try hard.

The complex design of a beautiful bathroom in a small Khrushchev

Choosing a style for renovation

Thinking about the design of the bathroom in Khrushchev, do not forget about the design of the entire apartment. For example, a high-tech bathroom will look alien in an apartment with a classic interior, despite the fact that it will be very comfortable and beautiful in itself. Here it would be more appropriate to use elements of classical design and natural materials - a wooden cabinet or shelf, gilded sconces near the mirror, marble panels.

The sewer riser can be designed as a marble column, and the washbasin can be replaced with a ceramic or porcelain bowl, standing on a countertop made of artificial or natural stone. However, do not forget that classic design is primarily luxury and elegance, so a small room should not be overloaded with decorative elements. For examples of styles in design, you need to refer to the photos on our website and on the Internet in order to choose the direction you like.

Photo of a bathroom with a washing machine under the sink and tub

Country style for non-professionals is the most successful, as it involves extraordinary simplicity and closeness to nature. Pebbles, driftwood, natural fabrics and rough crafts can replace most of the finishing materials and decor elements.

The design of the bathtub is also better to choose in accordance with the chosen style - free-standing on figured legs will decorate both a classic bathroom and a country style one. If it is standard, you can simply add some characteristic detail, for example, the standard front panel can be replaced with a roughly painted wood or even a curtain made of canvas or linen.

A bathroom in Khrushchev in the style of minimalism, at first glance, seems to be the simplest and easiest to perform during repairs. Indeed, nothing superfluous is allowed here, and all constructions have their own functional purpose. But suffice it to recall that the origins of minimalism is the Japanese style, which has been developing its own rules for thousands of years.

Impeccable lines of surfaces and many other nuances create an elusive play of this style, and any mistake turns such an interior into an empty and uninteresting one. Little details create this simple style. However, a competent minimalist bathroom project is the best suited for Khrushchev apartments - the interior space of such rooms visually expands, and its functionality surpasses any other interior options.

Before choosing new plumbing and bathroom furniture in Khrushchev, it is necessary to determine the minimum that really should be in the bathroom. Indeed, many, if they have a bath, are ready to abandon the washbasin in order to put a washing machine there, or, on the contrary, they change it to a compact shower. In any case, with a shortage of space, you should not put bulky cabinets for storing things in the bathroom or try to equip it with all known plumbing at once, right up to the bidet.

Even the most modest size and area of the bathroom in Khrushchev allow you to place a minimum set of items in it - a washbasin, a toilet bowl, a small cabinet for storing detergents, and a place for bathing. The shower stall in Khrushchev is generally very popular.

Angled and asymmetrical plumbing fixtures and furniture are the best way to organize a tiny bathroom space. For example, an asymmetric hot tub with a volume of 300 liters fits perfectly in a small bathroom in Khrushchev, because its length is only 150 cm, and its width is 51 cm and 96 cm. It is important to plan such moments in advance during repairs.

Minimalism at its finest. Photo of real repair

Above the washing machine, toilet and door, you can use the vertical space of the walls. Hanging cabinets and shelves should not be very deep (up to 25-30 cm), otherwise they will visually clutter up the bathroom space. The same rule applies to the cabinet for the washbasin, and it is better to refuse shelves over a small sink altogether, since bending over the sink for shaving or washing in this case will be very inconvenient.

Color solution

Many bathroom design projects are done in pastel light colors that visually expand the space and make it airy and weightless.

Combined bathroom in bright colors

At the same time, white color can be the main or additional color both in finishing materials during repairs, and in furniture or plumbing. Light pistachio and lemon color patterns on the wall or furniture facades give the bathroom an extraordinary freshness. A delicate cream or peach shade creates a special coziness, while the traditional blue makes the room cool.

Often bathroom renovation involves the installation of an acrylic insert, while the color of the new border must be matched to the color of the enamel or acrylic material. It is generally better to abandon horizontal borders and patterns in a small bathroom in favor of vertical stripes or patterns. The use of two or three colors in harmony with each other is quite enough to create coziness in a small bathroom in Khrushchev.

In order for the repair of a combined bathroom in Khrushchev to give concrete results, often a complete redevelopment of the premises is required, which, of course, is quite expensive and troublesome.

  1. Area: when we hear the concept of "Khrushchev" the first association that comes to mind is a minimum of space. Of course, the option of a combined bathroom and bathroom is much more pleasant, but such happiness does not happen in every Khrushchev building.
  2. Communications: bathroom renovation in Khrushchev today requires a global redevelopment, because only in this case it is possible to achieve expansion and increase in space. However, such a plan is most often interfered with by laid communications, because plumbing is tied to specific places, which is not always beneficial for changing a room. In addition, during the renovation in the bathroom, there may be an unplanned need to replace communications or wiring, which is quite expensive.
  3. Uneven surfaces: one of the main problems of Khrushchev's houses is the rather rough and uneven walls. As a rule, during the repair of a Khrushchev bathroom, you have to level both the walls and the floor, which is quite expensive and takes a lot of time. It should also be noted that when leveling, mortar and putty are used, which occupy a considerable layer, and the reduction in space affects the bathroom area in a bad way.

Such difficulties are encountered on the path of any repair, and even more so in the bathroom of the Khrushchev house. However, any troubles can be solved, most importantly, it’s good to think everything through in advance.

Planning

Repairing a bathroom in Khrushchev, like repairing a bathroom, requires a detailed plan, because otherwise any little thing can ruin and complicate your actions. A preliminary plan will help to properly organize the space, increase the usable area, put all the little things in their places.

Such a project involves arranging furniture, plumbing, electrical appliances and even such trifles as a laundry basket and cup holders for toothbrushes.

Consider the options for finishing and its shades, because then it will be difficult to change anything.
The plan will help to organize the already scarce bathroom space in a functional and attractive way.

Description: Bathroom design in Khrushchev. TOP 15 bathroom design options.

In this slideshow, I have chosen the best options for how a renovation should look like in a small bathroom, which contains both a bathroom and a bathroom.

Often we are faced with such a situation that at the time when we are thinking about how to change the situation in the bathroom, nothing comes to mind due to limited maneuverability.

Photo of a water heater in the interior of a bathroom

Despite the general opinion of designers from every corner of the world, today even a child knows that a full bath takes up a lot of space. A reasonable solution would be to replace the bath with a shower or at least a corner bowl. If we exclude cardinal options with redevelopment, combining with a bathroom and removing the wall, such a replacement would be the most painless choice.

Advantages of a shower cabin:

  1. the amount of water consumed is reduced by 5-6 times,
  2. free space will be much larger,
  3. a place for a washing machine or a laundry basket is formed.

It is worth noting that replacing plumbing is quite simple with your own hands. A new shower stall is a little pricey, but it will pay off once you see your bathroom as spacious and comfortable.

  • Repair of a bathroom in Khrushchev will be functional and reasonable in case of replacing the USSR plumbing with modern design options. Consider the idea of a wall-hung toilet: when the cistern is hidden in the wall and the floor under the structure is free, the room seems spacious enough. The installation is quite durable and can withstand weight up to 200 kg.
  • Bathroom renovation in Khrushchev will also affect the sink. The cardinal method involves the complete removal of the sink, and the use of a faucet above the bathtub as a washbasin. Not everyone likes this option, so it’s better to get by with a modern hanging model. The free floor is the best effect on the spacious room.
  • Communications must be hidden, for which use a drywall box. Not a single toilet repair in Khrushchev is complete without this solution. In any room of the Khrushchev house, it is advantageous to use such an idea as additional shelves for bathroom accessories.
  • Of course, the bathroom in Khrushchev is unlikely to also accommodate a washing machine, but huddling in the kitchen is not the best idea. The device can be installed under a wall-hung washbasin, next to a new shower cabin, near a triangular bathtub with a narrow angle, or even make a special niche in the room. However, please note that the location of the washing machine must be considered in advance.

Having followed these tips in a complex, a new bathroom will not be recognized. The advantage of such solutions is that any replacement and redevelopment can be done by hand, and this will not hurt the family budget.

The big question is, how much does the repair cost? The modern market offers a lot of goods of various prices, both domestic and imported. It is very important not to chase the cheapness of goods, because bathroom renovation is not done for a year or two. Remember, no matter how much new plumbing costs, its service life should reach 10 years.

If you still decide to demolish the wall and radically change the premises, be patient and resourceful, because you will have to face the BTI service (you cannot make changes to the apartment plan without their permission) and a lot of related problems.

In favorable scenarios, do-it-yourself repairs will be a pleasure, not to mention the results.

Blue bathroom design

Choice of shades

As we have mentioned more than once, the primary problem of the rooms in the Khrushchev house is the minimum area. This issue is most effectively solved in two ways: the replacement of plumbing, which we indicated above, and the choice of light finishes.

Let's talk in more detail about the choice of lining and its shade:

The traditional choice of every second housewife is ceramic tiles. Repairing a toilet in Khrushchev, as well as in a bathroom, requires high-quality moisture-resistant and durable materials, such as tiles. Its plus is that you can do the styling yourself, it is resistant to ultraviolet radiation, extreme temperatures and high humidity.

Only tiles can protect the room from dampness and fungus, and, most importantly, it costs quite reasonably. The choice of decorative material is huge, so there is no need to worry about how much it will cost.

Design project of a small bathroom in Khrushchev in pink and white colors

  • the room only needs to be enlarged, with which only light shades have successfully coped for many years,
  • couples like yellow and orange, white and sandy green and turquoise, pink and purple look favorably,
  • tones should be soft and not irritating to the psyche,
  • saturated colors like red, black, blue, brown are best used as an addition to the main white, beige, olive and light gray,
  • to emphasize certain areas of the room, use mosaic tiles of the appropriate shade,
  • floor tiles should be slightly darker than wall tiles (example: white wall and gray floor),
  • the pattern or pattern should be minimal, better just a few tiles, a bathroom that ripples with polka dots or a flower is not the best choice for a modern do-it-yourself renovation.

In no case do not choose large slabs - they will divide the meager room in Khrushchev into even smaller zones. A medium-sized rectangular tile looks organic.

It is better to lay the material on the walls horizontally, so the bathroom will visually stretch in breadth. And diagonal masonry is perfect for the floor.

Find out how much tiles cost from various manufacturers, both domestic and imported. Do not trust single points on the market without a certificate and a warranty period.

Buy materials with a margin and in one store.

How to place a bath and a bathroom in a combined bathroom in Khrushchev

Problems of Khrushchev's bathrooms

As already clear, the main disadvantage of combined bathrooms in Khrushchev is their small size, as a rule, their area does not exceed four square meters. It should also be noted here that at the time when the Khrushchev houses were being designed, due attention was not paid to the placement of household appliances, which means that in order to fit a washing machine on four square meters, you will most likely have to resort to redevelopment of the premises.

Redevelopment, as you know, is not an easy task in itself, and before starting it, you should carefully consider where and how to place plumbing. In addition, not all ideas with redevelopment can succeed: difficulties arise with a sewer riser, which cannot be moved, and therefore, plumbing will need to be installed not where you want, but where the riser will allow.

And finally, you need to pay attention to the interior and decor of the bathroom in order to visually expand the space, and the walls of the room do not psychologically put pressure on the person in the bathroom.

Description: In the recent past, the bathroom was given the undeservedly cramped place in the room, and no attention was paid to its design at all.
The traditional color combination was considered to be a range of dark and light tones of ceramic tiles. Such an interior is not at all pleasing to the eye, and is unlikely to cheer you up.

Today, everything has changed, new trends in design art will help create a room full of comfort and style, and boundless imagination will turn your bathroom into a real paradise.

The modern world provides a rich variety of various products for the correct, harmonious and beautiful design of the bathroom.
Also, a wide range of various accessories allows you to give each bathroom, the design of which is taken even from a regular renovation magazine, a unique look for every taste.

With the right approach, any bathroom, regardless of its size, can shine with colors of individuality. The most important thing is beauty and comfort.

Photo of a bathroom in Khrushchev: toilet, sink, bathroom

The walls and ceiling must be light, if ceramic tiles are used for wall cladding, then it is better to avoid large bright patterns. A tile with a discreet or no pattern is much more suitable for a small bathroom.

The same applies to the texture - a smooth glossy surface will visually expand the space, but if textured coatings are preferred, then this should not be a pronounced and medium-sized texture.

We combine the toilet, washing machine sink and water heater

As for the ceiling: it can be whitewashed, finished with a light smooth panel, and even better to mount a stretch ceiling with a glossy surface.

And if we are already talking about mirror surfaces, then the mirrors themselves cannot be neglected either - due to the reflection of the wall, the bathroom in Khrushchev visually expands significantly.

We develop the interior - the best photos and ideas that work

When designing an interior, you first need to decide directly on the decoration of the walls, ceiling and floor. As mentioned earlier, the colors should be light, so the walls and ceiling can be made in the same color scheme: creamy muted tones, with the ceiling lighter than the walls and the floor darker to create a kind of gradient from light to dark, which visually makes the room appear higher. .

You can make glossy not only the walls and ceiling, but also the floor, the only drawback of such coatings is their soiliness, so it is better to immediately remove drops of water from the walls and floor. Acrylic bathroom liner will save you money, time and nerves. This is one of the fastest and easiest ways to refurbish your bathroom.

If you started a bathroom renovation and are limited in funds, an inexpensive way to finish is described here.

Bathrooms with light-colored tiles can give the impression of a cold operating room, so it makes sense to add a few color accents to the interior. For a long time, the accent was the horizontal division into the upper light and dark lower parts - such a classic technique is good for large rooms, and vertical lines are more suitable for bathrooms in Khrushchev.

Therefore, for decoration, you can lay out a narrow strip of darker tiles from floor to ceiling - additional lines will visually raise the ceiling.

It is worth stopping at the choice of ceramic tiles: for small bathrooms, it is better to choose medium-sized tiles - large square or rectangular details can focus on the fact that the area of \u200b\u200bthe room is small.

Photo of a small bathroom in Khrushchev. Combine washing machine and sink

The same rules apply to mosaics of small squares that are so popular now - the colorful design of the walls will narrow the room even more, so it is better to leave the mosaic exclusively for decoration, and with a calm monophonic color combination. As for plumbing, with today's variety, you can place everything you need in small spaces.

The most bulky piece of furniture in the bathroom, of course, is the bathtub itself - now manufacturers offer not only long bathtubs, but also non-standard ones with a reduced length, using which you can easily free up space for a washing machine.

Photo of the bathroom "rainbow"

With a small size of the room, sitz baths combined with shower cabins are practical - they take up a little more space than an ordinary shower room, but functionally it is much superior to them.

For the tiniest bathrooms, separate showers are perfect, and if you choose glass doors or shower screens, the space will be perceived as a whole with the entire bathroom.

Significantly save space in the room will help corner baths, which, among other things, are also functional - their design provides shelves for storing care products. There should be no difficulty in choosing a bathroom sink - now on the market there are extremely compact sinks with dimensions of no more than 55 × 40 centimeters.

Photo of the bathroom where they could fit the washing machine.

You can experiment with the placement of the sink, such as placing it overlapping the bathtub so that the rim of the sink partially overlaps the rim of the bathtub. For very small rooms, manufacturers have provided corner sinks that will not take up a single centimeter of usable area.

Models of toilet bowls are also very diverse now, for small rooms, toilet bowls with installations inscribed in a corner have long been successfully used - due to the hidden drain tank, the room looks modern, and at the same time additional space appears.

An effective technique for small bathrooms in Khrushchev will be the use of sinks and toilets attached to the wall and not touching the floor. Due to its "floating" in the air, such plumbing is not perceived as bulky, and the room retains space.

It is especially justified to use such “floating” sinks to place a low washing machine under it - now home appliance manufacturers offer automatic machines no more than 70 centimeters high, this design saves space very seriously.

Photo of the bathroom - strictly, concisely, beautifully.

With a competent approach, even small bathrooms in Khrushchev can accommodate all the necessary household appliances and plumbing, while the room will seem spacious.

To do this, just listen to our advice: choose the right tiles for walls and floors, combine plumbing and choose the right washing machine - and even such a problematic room as a combined bathroom in Khrushchev will become cozy, comfortable and functional.

Bathroom design ideas in Khrushchev

Khrushchev is not a sentence

With the advent of modern plumbing, the situation began to change, now even in such a small area that Khrushchev allotted for a bathroom, there is an opportunity to change its design for the better, make it more convenient and functional. When using compact modern plumbing, the bathroom expands not only visually, but also accommodates such devices that you could not even dream of before.

First of all, the design of the bathroom noticeably changes for the better when replacing a standard bathtub with its modern version, preferably a corner one. Such a replacement will immediately free up space that is quite sufficient for installing a washing machine, because Khrushchev has such a small kitchen that it is difficult to install a washing machine in it.

Competently "hide" the washing machine

Modern plumbing manufacturers offer interesting solutions, thanks to which the small area that a bathroom in Khrushchev has is used most optimally. There are two original models of washing machines on sale, each of which changes the design of the room in an original way, and a small bathroom gets more space.

Photo of the bathroom. Small but beautiful. Pink and beige colors

One of the models suggests its installation under the sink, which is sold complete with a washing machine, thanks to which the bathroom receives an improved interior design. The second model surprises buyers who saw it only in the photo. What to say about those who were able to see it in action!

The washing machine is called flop. Its installation saves not only a small bathroom area, but also water. It is installed above the toilet, combined with the flush function in it. This real miracle of technology has such an original design that only its presence in the bathroom gives the room a unique design.

Or maybe ... remove everything?

A revolutionary solution used in bathroom refurbishment is the installation of a drain in the floor and the complete elimination of a bath or shower. Only the shower device itself is installed, and an impact-resistant glass partition is installed to protect the bathroom walls from splashes. Glass can be frosted, which will give some intimacy to taking a shower, and for convenience and visual expansion of space, they are made sliding.

The photos of such a room arrangement presented in magazines amaze with the spaciousness that the bathroom has after reconstruction. Many simply do not understand how Khrushchev gets such space.

Everything is done simply - the pipes are hidden in the wall, and if it is impossible to hide them in the plane of the wall, they are closed with boxes ennobled with tiles. At the same time, the upper planes of such boxes serve as shelves for toiletries.

The toilet is placed either in a corner, which significantly saves space, or does not require a tank and is attached directly to the wall. The walls are made in light colors, and the floor is covered with tiles, the color of which is identical to the color of the walls.

The sink for washing is combined with a washing machine, or a glass one is installed, completely invisible against the general background. The interior is complemented by a large mirror, which gives a unique visual effect, and wall cabinets, merging with the walls with their color.

This design, complemented by shiny heated towel rails, and bright spots in the form of towels and other accessories, will make the standard bathroom, which Khrushchev once had, a room that is pleasant to visit.

In winter, unexpectedly, our forty-year-old Khrushchev house underwent a major overhaul. But still, as they say, whatever is done is for the better. Looking at how the plumbers changed the old cast-iron Khrushchev risers for polypropylene and PVC, I finally gathered my thoughts and realized that if I didn’t start a major overhaul in the bathroom and toilet now, I would never start it in this house.

Initial data and idea

The bathroom in my Khrushchev is separate. The dimensions of the bathroom in the light are 1520 * 1360 mm, but with certain manipulations they can be increased by 5-6 cm in each dimension, which I will discuss below.

The main idea of the new bathroom was to turn the tub 90 degrees and orient it along the far wall (opposite the front door). In my wife's opinion, this position is more rational, although we understood that we would lose ten centimeters in length.

Preparatory work

I took about two weeks to prepare for the immediate start of work in the bathroom in order to decide on the project of the future bathroom: draw up plumbing and sewage, ventilation, tile laying, etc.

So, what is a bathroom in a typical panel Khrushchev? In fact, this is just a cabin, which was cast somewhere at the DSC and already assembled in its place in Khrushchev during construction. The walls of the cabin have a meager thickness of 3-5 cm and they are made of reinforced gypsum concrete. The material is very weak and easily crumbles with a perforator or even a hammer. In the figure below, the walls of the “cabin” are shaded and, as we can see, they are adjacent to two load-bearing walls of the Khrushchev, in one of which (between the kitchen and the bathroom) there are ventilation shafts.

In repair practice, the most common option is the demolition of the Khrushchev partition between the toilet and the bathroom, which allegedly makes the bathroom more spacious and there is a lot of extra space. However, in my opinion, this is the most common misconception: no matter how much I tried to hypothetically design such a “spacious” combined bathroom in my Khrushchev, nothing came of it.

As I already said, the dimensions of the bathroom in my Khrushchev in the light are 1360 * 1520 mm. On the long side, we had a 150 cm bath, which we decided to replace with 140 cm and put it on the short one. For this, from the existing sizes, I lacked 4 cm, which I decided to get by demolishing the bathroom wall adjacent to the Khrushchev's load-bearing wall with ventilation shafts. This "gypsum board" was smashed with an ordinary mason's hammer in just three to four hours. The hardest thing was to take out almost two full baths of construction debris. The reinforcing mesh is neatly cut with a grinder.

Alas, I can’t demonstrate the old, pre-renovation view of the Khrushchev’s bathroom, but believe me, everything was very sad there.

I warn you that by demolishing the Khrushchev wall, you deprive the ceiling of one point of support. It is composed of the same gypsum concrete and is part of a solid "cabin". It can also be dismantled, but I decided to simply strengthen the bathroom ceiling by supporting it with a 40 * 50 mm beam and 10 * 100 mm dowels - this is quite enough.

Two of the four walls in the Khrushchev bathroom turned out to be crooked, with a blockage of up to 3 cm, so I had to deal with their alignment.

After I repaired the kitchen and corridor in my Khrushchev, I already had some plastering skills, but in the bathroom I decided to use a different method of leveling the walls, which I really liked as a result. Holes are drilled in the wall in several rows, self-tapping screws are screwed in, the heads of which are set according to the level and thus the reference points of a new, even and strictly vertical plane are obtained (in the first picture below, you can see the screws sticking out of the wall on the right). We prime the walls and wait 1.5-2 hours. Next, we take slabs of moisture-resistant drywall 1500 * 600 mm, which ideally fit the dimensions of our wall in Khrushchev (1520 mm) and are “glued” to the wall with a special adhesive solution for drywall. Unlike plaster, the adhesive composition hardens faster (up to 20 minutes), so the plates do not slip. The composition is applied with "buns" every 15-20 cm, on which the GKL plate lies and is tapped with a mallet or pressed with a rule so that the plane of the plate coincides with the plane of the previously set self-tapping screw heads.

The joints between the plates are sealed either with the same composition, or simply with plaster. The time for leveling the wall takes only 20 minutes, that is, exactly as long as the adhesive composition diluted in the bucket hardens.

Try to move 120 kilograms from the spot, and then take it out so as not to bomb half the apartment in Khrushchev (already repaired, by the way). I watched a video on YouTube of how these cast-iron bathtubs are cut with grinders, drilled with drills, even smashed with pound weights! (cast iron is a brittle material and can be chipped/broken). However, my wife's uncle stopped me in time and said that all these baths are easy to endure if everything is done correctly and skillfully.

While the uncle was at the entrance to the house, I managed to loosen the bath in one face, put it on the priest and remove the legs. Thresholds were covered with thick rugs, and on the way of our movement from the apartment soft tourist rugs were laid. In such a vertical position, we carefully carried the bath to the landing of the Khrushchev building and, further up the stairs, carried it outside without any problems. On this day, our apartment lost the last native element - the old Soviet cast-iron bath.

So, now I have nowhere to wash in Khrushchev, so I need to act quickly and efficiently so that the new bath is in place at least in three or four days. The first thing to do is plumbing and sewerage.

Water supply and sewerage

I changed the old cast-iron sewer in Khrushchev a year earlier, now I just had to change the layout of Khrushchev PVC pipes and do one very time-consuming piece of work - chasing the wall for sewerage and water supply in the future place of the sink (in the picture - this is on the right).

Chasing the load-bearing walls of Khrushchev is not a good thing, and it is doubly bad if it is chasing horizontally and not vertically. But on construction forums and a number of sites there was information that if the depth of chasing does not exceed a third of the thickness of the Khrushchev wall, then this type of work is still possible, or as the builders put it simply, you can chasing to the first reinforcement, no further.

Armed with a powerful hammer drill and a grinder with a diamond blade for concrete, I began this dirty work. Of the means of self-defense, it is imperative to have a respirator, goggles and gloves.

It took me a total of 4 hours to complete. The depth and width of the strobe is such that it is possible to install a sewer pipe with a diameter of 32 mm into it. Be sure to provide a slight slope of the pipe (5 degrees) on a horizontal section to ensure water flow. We remove the sewer pipe from the strobe using angled elbows (at 45 degrees) and put an adapter from a diameter of 32 mm to 50 mm (the main diameter of the sewer). This part of the sewer will already be hidden by the bathroom (blue mark on the wall), so there is no need to deal with further chasing.

We assemble the sewerage following the same rule - the slope towards the riser should be about 5 degrees so that the water does not stagnate in the pipes, but flows normally.

A little trick: in order for PVC pipes to easily join, lubricate them with liquid soap.

This is the wiring left behind by plumbers who changed the riser in the house.

I don't know if it could be done somehow more practical and easier? I think it was possible. Two polypropylene ball valves (32 mm) and a jumper between them are not a basic option. I asked the plumbers to make such a design so that I could install the heated towel rail myself, without involving anyone. Without a jumper, during the installation of a towel, I would have to leave my entire Khrushchev without hot water.

I drew a diagram of the future plumbing and sewerage of the Khrushchev bathroom on a piece of paper. It is necessary, including in order to correctly calculate the number of fittings and pipes needed to be purchased.

With such a scheme, I went to the construction market, once again consulted with the seller and bought everything I needed. From him, from the seller, I took a special soldering iron for polypropylene pipes for a week. I had no experience with such a tool, but I saw how plumbers do it, and YouTube is always at hand. For training, before the main work, I took a couple of extra couplings to indulge in - the soldering process is quick and not complicated at all.

What you need to know when installing a water supply system from polypropylene pipes:

Pipes come in a variety of diameters, but 16 mm (1/2 inch) pipes are most commonly used for water supply, and 32 mm (1 inch) for towel warmer pipes.

Pipes are available separately for hot and cold water supply. Pipes for hot water have internal reinforcement, which is visible on the cut (red).

The sellers may say that the water in our pipes is not so hot, so you don’t have to worry and install the same pipes for cold water supply, but in this case, depending on the temperature, they can and will definitely deform (stretch), which can be quite unpleasant. For example, in my case, plumbers who changed risers during the overhaul of Khrushchev managed one type of pipes (for cold water) and when hot water began to circulate in the system, these pipes simply spread and my jumper became crooked (look at the photo of the toilet above).

You can solder pipes in one person, but it is more convenient to do it together: one holds a soldering iron, and the second puts fittings on it, heats it up and joins it. My wife helped me to solder the pipes - it was the best March 8 for her)).

It is better to collect small elements and assemblies separately and then dock them to the main water supply. The picture above shows the nodes that will “go” to the kitchen: outlets for the kitchen faucet and outlet for the washing machine.

The pipes are cut with special scissors, but if they are not there, then this can be easily done with a grinder or a hacksaw, in which case you just need to process the edges of the pipes with sandpaper or the same grinder so that there are no notches and the cut is even.

The soldering iron must be heated to operating temperature. We tightly fit the fittings on both sides of it, which must be connected, count to 8 and then quickly remove the fittings and evenly join. The most important thing in this matter after the docking has taken place is in no case to correct or turn the fittings, even if they are not docked exactly as you would like. Such a loose connection can then leak.

It is also necessary to control that the pipe enters the fitting to a sufficient depth (determined by the inner boundary of the fitting socket).

Such a joint is considered ideal, where the rim / ring of molten polypropylene evenly bends around the pipe. Under no circumstances should you cut it!

Well, in general, and all the main recommendations. I don’t know if it’s right or not, but I soldered my plumbing in Khrushchev from the kitchen to the riser in the toilet, and not vice versa. It took me a whole day to dismantle the old and install a new water supply and sewerage system in Khrushchev. Plastic plugs (red in the photo) are screwed into the outlets for the faucets, so far there is only water in the kitchen. We turn on the water, open the faucet in the kitchen and check the system for leaks. Luckily, no leaks were found.

Another point regarding the piping to the mixers. For a washbasin faucet, the distance between the pipes does not really matter, because the connection will be made with flexible hoses, but the bathroom faucet has a fixed distance between the nozzles - 150 mm. Therefore, the distance between the centers of the fittings that are connected to the mixer must be exactly 150 mm. If you didn’t guess a couple of millimeters, then it’s okay - you can then adjust it with the help of “ducks” (special sleeves on which the mixer nozzles are screwed).

The next stage of work is laying tiles on the floor. I decided to veneer the entire floor of the Khrushchev, including under the future bathroom: the overpayment is insignificant, and the effect is much more pleasant.

I did not do any preliminary leveling of the surface, any self-leveling floors, etc. The rough floor of the Khrushchev in the evening was treated with the Ceresit CT16 coloring primer, and the next day in the morning my wife's uncle arrived - he is our tiler. He laid the floor under the level, and the irregularities were corrected by the thickness of the adhesive solution.

Tile "Keramin". Manhattan Collection (gray). We laid the same tiles two years earlier in the corridor and kitchen of our Khrushchev. We decided that everything in our little Khrushchev should be done in the same style - no Gzhel and gypsyism, which for quite a long time annoyed the facing uncle.

The tile left over from that repair lay in place under the bath, as you can see, it differs in tone from the new tile purchased.

After the glue had dried the next day, I hollowed out a niche in the gypsum concrete wall, which will be located above the bath and is intended for shampoos and other small bottles. Alabaster grabbed the water pipes in the gate and then plastered everything. Didn't do this before tiling because I had to adjust to the schedule of the tiler.

Bathtub installation and bathtub screen fabrication

While waiting for couriers with a new bathroom, I started leveling the second curved Khrushchev wall (wall with a door). The same slabs of moisture-resistant drywall were used, the joints between which were smeared with plaster. The corners that are visible in the frame were intended for attaching shelves to them for the entire width of the wall (for basins, etc.). In the course of the work, the tiler suggested a slightly different way of manufacturing and fastening such a shelf (I will describe it later).

I also brought out a socket with several degrees of protection (a special socket for bathrooms) and soldered pipes for a heated towel rail. Later, it will remain to screw the corner brass “Americans” into them and hang a “towel” on them.

Finally, the new bath has arrived. Be sure to arrange an inspection of the product together with couriers on the street, after which they bring it into the apartment and put it on the priest in the bathroom.

Here it is necessary to start a conversation about the eternal: what kind of bath should be - acrylic, steel or cast iron? You can argue and argue endlessly, but I will not do this, because this is the topic of a separate article. Personally, I liked the German steel bathtub Kaldewei Saniform Plus 140 * 70. Is steel noisy? Poor temperature control? Calm down dear, all this is not about her. On sale there are steel baths with a wall thickness of 2 and even 1.3 mm, and this one has a record 3.5 mm. literally after a month or two of operation ... Kaldewei Saniform Plus turned out to be the only bathroom about which there was not a single negative review, but on the contrary, the owners were satisfied with everything. So I bought it and did not regret it.

I made the installation of a 40-kilogram bath in one person, without assistants, which could not be done with a cast-iron product. I installed a siphon / semi-automatic device on it, put the legs,

and then carefully placed it on the floor. Two levels lay on the sides of the bath (long and short), on which, with the help of adjustable legs, I installed the product strictly horizontally. No bullying towards the drain!!! Absolutely all bathtubs have a bottom slope, which provides a normal flow of water. To eliminate the slightest staggering, the bath must be wedged: wooden wedges are hammered between the wall and the side.

A noise test showed that the noise of falling water in this bath differs little from what was in the old cast iron one. If you continue to be skeptical about this business, then buy a couple of sheets of car soundproofing and glue them to the bottom and sides of the tub.

Now that the bath is wedged and does not stagger, you can start making the screen. To start with the general points:

If you want to make a really good repair, then refuse any purchased screens under the bath.

The screen under the bathroom should be tiled - this is both beautiful and hygienic.

Forget about the last century and in no case do not make these miserable niches for the legs. Previously, when they washed in basins or in the bathroom, they may have been needed by the housewives, but today we live in the age of washing machines, so what the hell are these useless niches.

The screen should provide emergency access to the pipes, so a small part (near the siphon) should either be left open or laid with a piece of tile, which, if necessary, can be easily removed. It is not at all necessary to install inspection hatches made of steel or plastic.

And yet, make the screen strictly vertical, do not experiment with any inclined surfaces. They can easily spoil the geometry of the room.

Well, now let's start making a screen for a bath with our own hands. For the screen frame, we need steel profiles 27 * 27 mm for drywall. According to YouTube videos, I made a preliminary markup under the bathtub (at the bottom left of the frame you can see pencil marks and a long line for the entire length of the bathtub). In general, markup is done like this:

From the side of the bathtub on the wall, we draw a vertical line along the level to the floor - this is the first notch on the floor.

From the first notch, we retreat deep into the distance equal to the width of the bent edge of the bathtub rim and put the second notch.

From the second notch, we retreat a distance equal to the thickness of the tile and the adhesive layer (third notch) and, finally, we retreat another 12 mm (gypsum board thickness) and get the fourth notch.

The fourth notch will be the edge of our steel frame for the bathtub. With the help of a level and a ruler, we retreat the resulting distance on the other side of the bath. We draw a straight line between the serifs. On it we will fix the profile.

The steel profile is cut with a grinder, to stiffen the structure, two profiles are folded and twisted with self-tapping screws. To save myself from the unnecessary drilling of holes in the Khrushchev floor, I glued the lower profile with silicone sealant. The most important thing in this matter is to first reliably degrease the surfaces to be glued with white spirit or acetone. Then we apply silicone sealant and strongly press the profile to the floor. In about an hour and a half, it will almost not be torn off the spot. The upper profile is glued to the side of the bath in the same way. Bars can be inserted into the gaps between the bathtub and the profile, again to stiffen.

The vertical ribs near the wall already need to be planted on dowels (you can’t do without drilling here), and the middle vertical ones - on self-tapping screws.

Before sewing up the space with a sheet of drywall, we put a ground wire on the bath (attached to the black ear on the left in the top photo).

Finally, a sheet of drywall takes its place with a cutout for access to the siphon under the bath. The dimensions of the cutout are 260x400 mm. Drywall is attached with screws to the profile. So, the manufacture of the screen for the bath in my Khrushchev is completed.

Room cladding

Again, in the evening, I primed all the walls and the screen under the bathroom with Ceresit CT19 primer-paint. When working with it, I strongly recommend that you carefully cover the bathtub with an old bedspread or sheet and immediately wipe off the primer if it gets on enamel or tile - it will be too difficult to remove it later, after drying.

At the stage of preparatory work, I made a layout of tiles from the collections of Keramin "Manhattan" and the Italian Alta Ceramica (collection "La Petra di Volta". The apron in the kitchen is lined with Italian tiles and we are delighted with it.

The bathroom lining took two and a half working days. The most difficult job was in the diagonal laying of Italian tiles, but our tiler successfully completed the task.

The niche was eventually made not dark, as in the layout diagram, but light. The frame already shows the new Wassercraft faucet with a short spout, located not at the end of the bath, as usual, but on the side, so that it is convenient to regulate the flow of water without getting out of the bath.

And here is the shelf above the front door, already lined. It is made of two sheets of thin drywall (6mm) screwed to a wooden frame (boards 100x18 mm) with self-tapping screws. Basins and containers with clean towels are now stored on this shelf.

The wiring for the fan and hanging cabinet was pre-wired.

Well, this is how it happened. Upon completion of the work, even the wife's skeptical uncle melted - he really liked the result of our idea and his work. To the right, under the bathroom, there is a place for access to communications.

Installation of hanging cabinets and more

After all the seams were jointed, it was time to install the rest of the Khrushchev bathroom furniture. I liked the mirror cabinet from the Russian manufacturer Aquaton. All the small rubbish (deodorants, shaving products, wife's cosmetics) calmly fit into it, and there is even a place left. Visually, the locker practically does not eat up the space in the Khrushchev’s bathroom; because of the mirror, you can’t even immediately understand that this is a locker at all.

I bought a fan from the Spanish manufacturer Cataco - always with a cord. That is, the fan power is combined with the Khrushchev bathroom light switch, but it is always possible to turn off the device with this same cord.

The inspection hole was closed not with a poor hatch, but with a piece of tile, to which the reciprocal strips of furniture magnets were glued. The seam between the tiles was sealed with sealant in the color of the fugue. It turned out to be a seemingly monolithic screen under the bathroom, but in which case the sealant will simply be cut off, and the tile will be removed with a suction cup - access to communications is open.

Heated towel rail hung one of the last. In order not to damage the brass "American" when tightening the thread, I recommend holding some thick rag between the key and the nut. Well, yes, the threads are packed either with tow and unipack, or with a thick Teflon thread. For greater reliability, I recommend that you also buy a few gaskets for an inch pipe (I forgot what material they are made of, but they are not pressed through like rubber).

I put water on the towel - everything is sealed. Again, lucky.

For a long time we could not decide on a hanging cabinet and a washbasin for the bathroom, but at the very last moment we found a wonderful product from AM&PM Like 80 cm. -for this unfortunate centime, you have to take the cabinet already. But as it turned out, 80 cm is the width of the washbasin, and it protrudes beyond the dimensions of the cabinet by 1 cm in each direction, so the width of the cabinet is 78 cm, which naturally suits us. Tyutelka in tyutelka, you can say))

The choice in favor of a hanging pedestal was because visually it is not as bulky as a floor pedestal. Plus, again, there is always access to the siphon under the bathroom (remember the revision hole). The picture also shows a socket with a protective screen.

Wassercraft faucet from the same series as on the bathroom - cute, angular as we like)) The sink has a bottom valve with a click-clack system (pressed - you can draw water into the sink, pressed again - flushed).

This is the room we got at the finish line of the main work.
