Make a roof from roofing felt. We cover the roof with roofing material. Roofing carpet on a concrete roof

Ruberoid has long been widely used not only as a waterproofing layer in the overall roof structure, but also as the main roofing material. Its use for roofing is especially relevant in cases where the need to create or repair a roof is very acute, and the owner of the house is short of money. It is also suitable for outbuildings that are invisible to the outside eye. In any case, if you have to resort to using such material precisely as the main roof, then the question arises - how to fix the roofing material to a wooden roof and other foundations.

Most often, gazebos, as well as outbuildings are covered with this roofing. But, in fairness, it should be noted that high-quality roofing material has no less operational resource than some modern roofing materials. However, how long it will be able to reliably protect the building from external atmospheric influences will depend not only on the correct choice of coating, but also on compliance with the technology of laying it on a certain basis.

Varieties of roofing material and its scope

The process of choosing this roofing material must be approached with the utmost responsibility, since there are many varieties of it on sale, and it is important to choose exactly the option that is ideal for flooring on a wooden roof base.

Roofing material can be made on the basis of roofing paper or fiberglass, which are impregnated with refractory bitumen on both sides. Many types of such rolled material can have a protective coating on the outside in the form of medium or fine abrasive chips.

Roofing material of different types has its own marking and its own performance characteristics, depending on which it can be used in a particular area of construction, as well as in different qualities, that is, as the main roof or only to create an additional one for it.

The main types of materials hiding under the term "roofing material"

Consider several different materials that are commonly called the general concept of "roofing material":

  • Tol- this is a rolled material that has been used for a long time and enjoyed wide popularity, but only due to the fact that there was simply no wide variety of waterproofing and roofing coatings in hardware stores. It is interesting that the name itself, apparently with a certain amount of irony, is borrowed from the French language: the word "tôle" means sheet roofing iron.

Tol is made on the basis of roofing paper, which is impregnated with tar shale or coal products, and is used as a waterproofing and roofing coating. However, only in comparison with other rolled materials, which are referred to as "roofing material", it has significantly lower performance and durability, and is most often used in the arrangement of temporary buildings that are not designed for a long period of use. At present, manufacturers have almost completely abandoned the manufacture of this material due to its impracticality - more modern and durable analogues have come to replace it.

  • "Steklomast" It is made on the basis of high-strength fiberglass fabric or polyester fabric, which are impregnated on both sides with bitumen-polymer compounds. The outer side of this roofing may have a protective layer consisting of a coarse-grained mineral dressing. Due to the qualities of these materials, the sheets of this waterproofing and roofing coating have high flexibility, which is not lost even at low temperatures.

The service life of this roll material, declared by the manufacturer, is usually about 15 years.

ruberoid

  • "Rubemast" - this is a modified version of the traditional roofing felt, featuring modern production technology and improved characteristics. The basis for this material is roofing paper, which is impregnated with special bitumen mixed with mineral additives.

Granite chips or quartz sand are used to sprinkle the outer side of the paintings. Thanks to production innovations, the density of Rubemast exceeds that of a conventional roofing material by almost 5 times.

  • "Euroruberoid" It is made on the basis of fiberglass, which is impregnated with a mixture of bitumen and synthetic rubber. Rubber components significantly increase the waterproofing qualities of the material and make it more elastic. Therefore, "Euroruberoid" is well resistant to low winter temperatures, and its durability under conditions of constant operation is 20÷30 years.

The upper mineral dressing of the material serves not only to protect the lower layers from mechanical influences, but also performs decorative functions, since stone or sand chips of various colors can be used for it.

It should not be assumed that the name "Euroruberoid" means exactly the import production of the material. It is, rather, a "collective image", more talking about the high quality of such a roofing. And it can also be produced here: a vivid confirmation of this is the widest range of high-quality rolled materials of the TechnoNIKOL company.

  • Another version of the roofing material is its liquid variety, which is a polymer-bitumen composition (PBC) and serves mainly for waterproofing roofs. It is used for application on concrete, wood and metal surfaces, as well as on old bituminous coatings during their repair.

The advantages of "liquid roofing material" include the fact that after drying it forms a seamless monolithic coating that will reliably protect the roof from leakage.

The mixture has high adhesion with any surfaces and is applied in two to three layers, with time intervals of one to two hours. Complete drying of the coating occurs in a day.

The advantages of all types of roofing material include the versatility of the material, as it is suitable for covering roofs installed at different slopes and having different designs. It is not difficult to lay roofing material on your own, since it is not particularly heavy and has good elasticity. When repairing a roof with a ruberoid roof, you do not have to dismantle the entire coating - it will be enough to remove only the damaged area, and then lay a new sheet.

Mineral toppings of roofing material

A few words need to be said separately about the outer top coating of the material in order to give a general idea of what it is like. As you know, in addition to a smooth surface, roofing sheets can have four types of protective coatings made of mineral materials - these are coarse-grained, fine-grained, scaly and dusty.

  • Coarse-grained coating is made from mineral stone chips, and granite is most often used for this purpose. Roofing felt, having such a topping, is considered universal, as it is suitable for both roofing and waterproofing roofs or other building elements. But its main purpose, of course, is the creation of a high-quality roofing that is not afraid of external mechanical loads.

  • The outer coating of fine-grained sanding cloths resembles coarse-grained sandpaper, as it most often consists of quartz sand. This variant of the material is suitable both for the outer layer of the roof and for laying under another roof covering, as a basic waterproofing.

Ruberoid is a waterproofing material made on the basis of cardboard impregnated with oil bitumen. Most often sold in rolls.

The use of roofing material involves not only its use for flat roofs, but also for pitched ones. In addition, roofing material is an excellent waterproofing material for foundations and roofs (upper and lower layers). A similar way to cover the roof is.

Roofing material, as a roofing material, is divided into 4 types:

  1. Simple (glassine). The coating composition, which has a special dressing, is applied to a cardboard base, which, in turn, is impregnated with bitumen;
  2. Built-up (rubumast). Unlike a simple roofing material, it is much easier in the process of work;
  3. Roofing felt having a synthetic or fiberglass base. The service life reaches 12 years;
  4. Surfaced (euroroofing material). The roof of a new generation, which is based on bitumen-polymer materials. Virtually indestructible. Service life - up to 25 years.

When choosing a roofing material, it is important to know what this or that type of roofing material is and how to make a quality choice.

When choosing and buying roofing material, you need to pay close attention to the abbreviation, consisting of a set of numbers and letters:

  • The first letter is the name of the material. "P" - roofing material;
  • The 2nd letter means destination. "K" - roofing, "P" - lining;
  • The 3rd letter(s) will show the type of topping. "K" - coarse-grained; "M" - fine-grained; "PP" - pulverized; "H" - scaly;
  • Numbers from 300 to 400 will report the density of the cardboard (1 gram per 1 square meter).

To make it easier to understand, let's give an example: RKK-400 will mean that this roofing material is a coarse-grained roofing material with a density of 400 g per square meter.

There are four types of material:

  1. Tol. It is based on roofing paper impregnated with a slate substrate or a coal substrate. On both sides sprinkled with stone chips. The use is universal;
  2. Rubemast has a fairly high viscosity of bitumen, which is applied to the underside of the cardboard. When laying the bottom layer must be melted or dissolved;
  3. Glass roofing material (glass mast). The basis is not cardboard, but fiberglass. The application is universal;
  4. Euroruberoid is a special built-up roofing material, the base of which consists of polyester or fiberglass, on which a layer of bitumen with polymer additives is applied. It is laid by melting the bottom layer.

In order not to be mistaken with the choice of high-quality material, you should definitely pay attention to the certificate, which must contain GOST and the brand of the product. For example - RPPP GOST 10923-93.

The nuances necessary for the correct choice of roofing felt:

  • The roll must be even, the protrusion of the layers cannot exceed 1.5 cm;
  • Should not stick together;
  • Without visible damage - folds, cracks, tears, etc.;
  • Impregnation must necessarily lie in an even layer;
  • Each roll is packed separately in paper from 50 cm wide, which must be marked;
  • The GOST stamp must contain information about the manufacturer, specifications, batch number and year of production of the material.

How to lay roofing material on the roof

In order to correctly and quickly lay roofing material on the roof, it is important to know the sequence of laying this roofing material:

  1. Ruberoid - rolled material. That is why a few days before the work, the roofing material is rolled out on a flat surface to allow it to straighten;
  2. On flat sections of the roof, roofing material must be laid in 4 layers, and on steep sections - in 2 layers;
  3. Before laying the roofing material, the surface must be prepared (it must be dry and even);
  4. Roofing work must be carried out in dry, calm weather;
  5. The material is glued using cold or hot mastic, which is determined by the materials from which the roofing material was made;
  6. You need to start work with the primer of the roofing.
  7. It is better to use ready-made primers. To make a primer on your own, you need to dissolve the bitumen in gasoline or kerosene.

  8. After priming the lining flooring, mastic is applied and only after that they begin work on laying the roofing material.

How is the installation of roofing material on the roof

Roofing material is laid in several stages:

  • Prepare the surface carefully. Remove debris and, if necessary, rinse and dry (in bad weather, you can use a blowtorch);
  • Heat up bituminous mastic, the consumption of which will entirely depend on how even the work surface is;
    Prepare primer and fill gaps, cracks and visible delaminations;
  • It is important to know that when making a soil solution on your own, gasoline must be poured into hot bitumen. Never the other way around, as this will ignite.

  • Lay down the mask. By fusing, the mastic is applied only to the edges of the roofing material. The thickness should not exceed 5 mm;
  • Ruberoid. The material is laid exclusively in the direction from the bottom up. If a burner is used in the work, then it is necessary to lay the roofing material so that when turning the sheets overlap by 15-20 cm;
  • Slowly unwind the roll, heat with a torch and press down. The service life of the roof will depend on how well this stage of work is carried out;
  • Next, another layer of mastic is laid. All subsequent sheets of roofing material should be perpendicular to those already laid;
  • Wrap the edges of the material and secure with nails;
  • The last top layer of roofing material should have a coarse powder and, in the same way, fit snugly enough to the base. The joints are overlapped, the edges are fixed with nails.

How to cover the roof of the garage with roofing felt

The roof of the garage, like any other, must be properly covered. The roofing material laying technology can be divided into several steps:

  • Prepare the surface;
  • Identify existing defects - delamination, cracks, holes;
  • Heat bitumen;
  • Prepare a primer (the method of self-preparation is described above);
  • Pour the primer into cracks and crevices, let it dry and level the roof with mastic;
  • Lay a lining layer of roofing material (it is possible that there will be several such layers) overlapped from the bottom up and again poured with mastic (it is necessary to fill in each layer);
  • Strengthen the edges with nails;
  • Lay the top layer of material and fix the edges.

Video instruction on how to cover the roof of the garage with roofing material

In order to qualitatively cover the roof with roofing felt, it is necessary to take into account several points that will be fully disclosed in the video below.

Roofing roof repair

In late spring and early autumn, that is, during the time when the rainy season ends or is about to begin, the roof covered with roofing felt must be inspected and defects identified.

Repair work will depend entirely on the quality and quantity of damage present:

  • Cracks. If the cracks are small, then initially the roof must be cleaned of debris and thoroughly dried. Then cover with mastic and a layer of bitumen, the consumption of which, in this case, will not exceed 1.2 kg per 1 square meter;
  • Holes. Thoroughly prepare the surface, clean both debris and the layer of old mastic. Very small holes can simply be puttied;
  • The parapet may interfere with the cleaning of the roof of debris, but its entry under the roofing carpet is unacceptable, as it will violate the waterproofing and integrity of the base;
  • Minor damage. This problem can be solved by applying a patch made of the same roofing material as the roof, and processing the edges with mastic.
  • If it turned out that the amount of mastic is more than necessary, the excess is leveled with a spatula in accordance with the thickness of the roofing material.

  • Through hole. When repairing this kind of damage, an incision (cross-shaped) is made and the corners are bent to the sides. The resulting recess is processed and closed with two layers of roofing material. One is glued to the roof, the previously bent corners are smeared with a layer of mastic and laid back on top of the first layer of roofing material. Then the 2nd layer is laid, which is also covered with mastic.

To avoid peeling of the patches, the repaired area of the roof is fixed with bricks, boards or heavy objects to achieve complete bonding and drying.

How is the calculation of roofing felt on the roof

The amount of material needed depends on the angle of the roof slope. So, if the angle is 45 degrees, only 1 layer of roofing material will be needed, if from 20 to 40 degrees, then 2 layers will be required, and at an angle of 5-15 degrees, 4 layers of material will need to be laid.

To determine the amount of roofing material, you need to know:

  • roof area;
  • The amount of material in a roll;
  • The required number of layers of roofing material.

It is worth noting that the average cost of material per 1 square meter with one layer of laying will be from 75 rubles. Two-layer laying can cost 130 rubles per square meter or more.

Roof waterproofing with ruberoid

Roof waterproofing using roofing material is the most environmentally friendly option for its arrangement. This type of work is carried out in full compliance with all stages, which will prolong the operation of the roof:

  • Training. Priming of a wooden covering, preparation of sheets of roofing material. After the complete drying of the soil layer - laying the roofing material;
  • Heat the bitumen (if necessary), apply a binder layer and lay the sheets of roofing material with an overlap (10-20 cm);
  • If at this stage cold mastic is used, then it is not necessary to preheat it and, accordingly, the need for additional preparation disappears.

  • After the roofing material is laid, all joints are heated to ensure better sealing of the joints;
  • With a small roof slope, experts recommend laying 3-4 layers of roofing material, and for large slopes, 2 is enough.

How much does it cost to cover the roof with roofing felt

For an approximate calculation of the cost of work, you need to know the amount of material for laying.

  • Do not forget that the minimum number of layers is two, which means the roof area must be multiplied by 2.
  • Provide a supply of material in case of improper installation and the need for replacement.
  • Buying mastic, or ingredients for self-preparation. On average, 1 square meter takes about 2 liters of mastic.

If it is necessary to cover a surface of 13 square meters:

  • 13x2=26 (since there will be 2 layers of roofing material);
  • 250 rubles x 2 = 500 rubles (250 rubles costs an average of 1 roll of roofing material 15 m long);
  • A package of 20 liters of bituminous mastic costs about 450 rubles. If you round the value and take 30 liters, then 30x2 = 60.
  • It will take 60 liters of mastic, which means 1350 rubles.

Approximate calculations showed that the approximate cost of work (produced) will be 1850 rubles. These figures are very approximate, so it is necessary to carry out calculations based on accurate calculations.

Many developers of country houses cannot afford to purchase high-quality, but expensive roofing materials. That is why more and more often they turn their attention to the time-tested roofing material. In addition, the service life of this roofing material is no less than 15 years.

In this article, we will talk about how to cover the roof with roofing material and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

How to cover the roof with roofing felt

Before proceeding directly to roofing work, it is necessary to calculate the possible loads on the truss system. If the value in the end is greater than the current rafter system can withstand, then it must be strengthened. You can also try to recalculate the load for fewer layers of roofing material. But still, the first option is much more preferable, because the smaller thickness of the roofing pie will negatively affect the durability and reliability of the roof.

Now you can move on to the next stage of work. In addition to reliable rafters, the roof must have a properly created crate. For its arrangement, it is recommended to use dry edged boards of equal thickness (at least 30 cm). Thin boards will not be able to withstand various dynamic loads (rain, snow, wind), and therefore savings can cause the entire roof to become unusable.

Boards on the crate must be laid tightly enough so that there are no gaps. However, some builders leave a space of 10-15 cm between individual boards. But still, it is better to avoid this installation method, since a solid base is much more reliable and protects the roof from leakage and damage.

It is important to recall that in the process of calculating the amount of roofing material, it is necessary to take into account side and butt overlaps of 10 cm each. For a ridge, the overlap of roofing material rolls can be 25 cm or more. If you lose sight of this nuance, then in the end there may be a situation with a lack of material.

Do-it-yourself roofing felt roof

In order to properly cover the roof with roofing material, it is necessary to remove all the filling from the sheets of material. This operation can be carried out mechanically, or you can clean the surface with diesel fuel. When laying roofing from roofing material, it is necessary to take into account the angle of the roof slopes. So, if it is 15 degrees or more, then the roofing material can be laid in two layers. With smaller roof slopes, it is necessary to lay the material in three layers - this will ensure greater reliability of the resulting roof.

For gluing rolls of roofing material together, it is necessary to use. You can also use pure bitumen, but mastics behave better at low temperatures and have higher heat resistance.

How to prepare bituminous mastic on your own?

By observing all the technological processes of laying a roofing material, it is possible to achieve an extension of its service life.

Therefore, it is so important to properly prepare the mastic:

After the roofing material is laid out on the roof, it is poured with a thick layer of the resulting mastic, which is sprinkled with coarse sand on top. This is necessary in order to strengthen the roof and extend its life.

How to properly cover the roof with roofing material

At first it may seem that such a lightweight material is easy enough to lay on the roof. But in fact, there are a number of nuances that are very important to consider. So, for example, for laying roofing felt on a concrete roof, it is necessary that its surface is clean and dry, there are no traces of vegetation and debris on it.

For proper installation of roofing felt, you can seek advice from specialists. They will undoubtedly prompt the order of work and help to carry out all the necessary calculations. Roofing material is laid in at least two layers. The first is called litter. It is allowed to put without sprinkling. As a second layer, it is better to use a modern euroroofing material. It has not only better reliability, but also fits more easily. In most cases, such material is sold together with granite dressing.

How to cover the roof with roofing material - the main subtleties

It is necessary to smear the roof area with bituminous mastic. Then it is warmed up. Roofing material is placed on top. A special skating rink is rolled over it. If you skip this stage of work, then airy areas may remain under the surface of the roof. This will lead in the future to moisture condensation in these voids and, as a result, to material rupture. High-quality roofing can only be ensured if there are no air pockets under the surface of the roofing material.

If the air is not removed even with the help of a roller, then it is necessary to carefully pierce this place. After the air comes out from under the surface of the roofing material, it is necessary to press it tightly until bituminous mastic flows from the puncture.

Comfort in the house depends on how to cover the roof with roofing material. That is why the following requirements are mandatory:

Ruberoid is a laminated plastic based on paper (roofing paper) and bituminous resin. Accordingly, it is a soft, flexible sheet (roll) material, strong enough, resistant to ultraviolet radiation, temperature changes, weather-resistant, lightweight and with good waterproofing and dielectric properties. As you can see, there are many advantages listed, so this article will tell you how to properly cover the roof with roofing felt for economical roofing and waterproofing (mainly foundations).

The disadvantage of bitumen it became that the cardboard base, although it is impregnated with low-melting bitumen, can eventually collapse or absorb moisture if the protective layer is broken. In addition, it is not resistant to puncture and tear; the material is dark, which means it gets very hot from the sun (although it is covered on top with a layer of refractory bituminous resin).

Cardboard for roofing material of different brands has a different density, which determines its purpose. The length of the roll is 15 meters, and the weight and strength are different for everyone. Before covering the roof, the roofing material in rolls must be rewound with the reverse side.

The letters in the abbreviation mean "P" - roofing material; "K" - for the roof of the roof.

The third letter is the type of top powder, for example:

  • "K" - coarse-grained
  • "P" - scaly
  • "M" - fine-grained

The numbers are the density of the cardboard, the larger it is, the stronger the roofing material.

Coarse-grained roofing materials - always for the outer layer. The most powerful waterproofing is provided by built-up roofing material, which has a thick top layer and an additional bottom layer made of special mastic. You can glue it using kerosene or white spirit, or by melting the bottom layer with a burner.

For the middle and lower layers of the roof roof, it is necessary to use roofing materials of the RKP brand, for internal ones with the RKM marking.

How many layers of roofing material need to be laid

For roofing with ordinary roofing felt, at least 2 layers are required

The number of layers of roofing felt depends on how long it is planned to operate the roof, on its slope and on the material used. Where euroroofing material can be laid in one layer, 2 layers of ordinary roofing material are required.

On slopes with a slope of 45 degrees to make a roof that will last for several years, roofing material is laid at least 2 layers: on the bituminous mastic glue the interlayer without crumbs, then the top layer with stone chips.

With a slope of 20-40 degrees and if the roof is needed more durable, for 10-15 years, 3 layers are laid. The two lower ones are lined, the upper one is covered with stone chips.

On roofs with a small slope (up to 15 degrees), 4 canvases are laid, three laying and finishing, they must be laid perpendicular to each other.

On flat roofs, 5 layers of roofing material are made, and everything is glued. Lay perpendicular to each other.

Preparing the roof surface

An important condition: your roof must be dry. In the rain, roofing material should not be covered!

Roofing material is laid on a flat base, rafters or support. All roofing work with roofing material is performed only in clear weather. If it rains, you can arrange a canopy and continue work, but only if the surface remains dry or damp from splashes, fog, high humidity. Otherwise, the material simply will not stick.

If you need to cover a flat concrete roof with roofing material(for example, from reinforced concrete floors), then a reinforced screed is made on top of the floor, 3-5 cm thick, with a slope (1 cm per linear meter) in one direction to facilitate snow removal or to the gutter. On a dried-up, cleaned screed with a brush or roller (an option is to pour a ladle of mastic, smear it with a mop), gently apply heated or cold (see recommendations on the bank) bituminous mastic. When it sets, you can glue the first layer of roofing material.

If the slope is small, the crate is needed solid (back-to-back boards or plywood, chipboard), otherwise the snow can push through the canvas and the roofing material will begin to collapse. A slope of more than 30-40 degrees will allow you to make a non-continuous crate, but the gaps are a maximum of 30 mm.

To make a pitched roof, it is necessary to stick a board from the attic between the farms and, attaching it from the outside, nail it to the farm. They begin to make the crate from below, when the crate is slightly larger than the width of the roll, it is smeared with mastic and a lining layer of roofing material is placed on it parallel to the lower edge of the roof. Fastened with slate nails. Then the next layer of the crate is made, and so on.

Laying roofing material on bituminous mastic

Making mastic

Bituminous mastic is sold in stores (now there is no need to melt bituminous resin)

Bituminous mastic- ready to use, sold in jars, does not require melting. It is possible to melt bituminous resin, but this is inconvenient and traumatic. It is easier to dilute the bitumen with gasoline to the consistency of jelly, flavor it with used engine oil (we ask at the service station). The mastic will not crack, it will stick perfectly. The only feature is that it is odorous and flammable until it dries.

The process of laying ruberoid

Ruberoid does not have to be glued. But if the slope is small, and the roof is made in winter, sizing with mastic is required. It is convenient to fasten by pressing with a metal tape (steel or aluminum) or slats, in steps of 50 cm.

The overlap of the sheets depends on the slope of the roof. The greater the slope, the smaller it is (7-20 cm, respectively). The roof must be covered from the bottom up, laying the sheets overlapping and gluing, then the water will not go into the seams. Previously, the panels are cut into pieces of the desired length.

Methods and technology for covering the roof with roofing material

  • Cloths across the slope. Laying on the roof from the bottom up, the top row is placed on the bottom row with an overlap of 10-20 cm. Water will not get into the seams.
  • Cloths along the slope. The overlap on the side is done taking into account the wind, also 10-20 cm. Laying from the pediment (we look at the wind rose, the wind should not tear off the layers!).
  • For the first layer across, and for the upper - along the slope.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Usually, the first layer of roofing material is placed on the bitumen of the prepared base, with an overlap of 15-20 cm, parallel to the edge of the roof, their ends are wrapped under the edge of the roof, fastened with a rail.
  2. Additionally fastened with slate nails (after 50 cm). Coated with bituminous mastic, the next layer is laid, with an overlap through the ridge (its canvases are perpendicular to the first), the edges are also wrapped.
  3. Bitumen is applied again and a finishing layer of roofing material is laid.
  4. Each next layer is placed with an offset of 1/3 or ½ of the sheet so that the seams of the top layer do not appear above the seams of the bottom: the first panel is folded onto the side of the fence or cut in half, the rest will move as a result.

It is necessary to lay the roofing material with an overlap of 5-15 cm

For roofing onneed a ladder, long enough to nail the batten boards on the highest part of the roof without any problems.

To roll out a roll of roofing material on an almost vertical crate, it is hung on a hook or pipe, like a spool of thread. The hook is hooked to the board of the crate and, moving it, the suspended roll is rolled out.

The last sheet must be fastened from the outside, since it is thrown over the skate. The second layer of roofing material can be laid with throwing over the ridge, across the slope, for this you need a ladder. For pitched roofs made of roofing material, ridge elements are not used.

Laying of built-up roofing material

There is a film on the welded roofing material on the heated side, it turns white and burns out when the heat is sufficient for gluing. It is impossible to overheat the sheets, they easily melt through.

The base preparation is the same.

Step-by-step instructions for laying built-up roofing material

  1. A roll of roofing material is placed in front of you so that rolling it forward and gluing it, go along it.
  2. They hold a burner in their hands, warming up part of the surface of the roll and the mastic in front of it for 20-30 cm.
  3. Then the heated sheet of roofing material with a burnt film (the adhesive base “boils”) is rolled out for about half a turn and glued, trampled down, and all the folds and swellings must be straightened out.
  4. It is better if the glued roofing material is rolled with a heavy roller. Then the next section warms up.
  5. So gradually, warming up and rolling, and glue the entire roll. It is important to roll, press the glued roofing material.
  6. The second sheet is glued with an overlap (by 5 cm) after complete cooling and gluing of the first.

Their popularity continues to be at a fairly high level. After all, laying roofing material on the roof of a wooden house, bathhouse, barn or garage is an easy and fast process. Only two people can complete it, and the price of this material captivates with its availability. It is for these reasons that owners of small country or village houses most often lay roofing material on the roof.

Preparing the roof for laying roofing material

In order for the roof covered with roofing felt to last as long as possible, it is necessary to pay as much attention as possible to the crate of the roof itself.

Since roofing felt is a flexible material, it can be damaged even by minor loads. For example, a cap of snow lying on the roof. And not so much in winter, but during the spring snowmelt - in those days when the snow cap slides down the slope of the roof.

A roof covered with tar paper does not require winter shoveling, so it will have to carry the load of the entire cap of snow all winter.

For this reason, it is recommended to arrange not so much a crate of boards (as is often done in increments of 10-15 cm), but a continuous underlayment of sheets of plywood, chipboard, OSB boards or similar materials. In a word, for the correct laying of the roofing material, it is necessary to exclude even the possibility of deflection of the roofing material itself between the boards of a non-continuous crate.

How to cover the roof with roofing material with your own hands

Depending on the slope of the roof, the roofing material is laid in several layers - from two to, in some cases, five.

The greater the slope of the roof of a wooden house, the fewer layers of roofing material must be laid. That is, if the slope is quite steep (30-45 o), then you can easily get by with two layers - the underlying and the outer.

But if the roof surface tends to be more horizontal, then the number of layers must be increased. So for a slope of 15-20 about, you need to lay 2, and preferably 3 layers.

The technology of laying roofing material on a pitched roof can be carried out in one of three ways. But no matter which method you choose, you need to take into account that you should leave the overhangs of the roofing material sheets to the sides, so that later they overlap on the gables and close the ends of the roof.

  • The first option, the most common, which can be seen most often on roofs, is the laying of sheets of roofing material from top to bottom, along the roof slope. With this method, the laying of sheets must begin from the pediment, which is located on the leeward side for most of the year, and consistently move to the opposite edge of the roof.

Depending on the roof area of a wooden house, it may well turn out that the length of each sheet will be enough to cover both sides of the roof at once.

If the length of one sheet is not enough to cover both sides of the roof at once, then each roof slope is covered separately, and the roofing material sheet overlaps through the ridge, 20-30 centimeters in each direction.

  • The second option involves laying roofing material across the roof slope, the so-called "herringbone". Laying starts from the bottom, leaving 20-30 cm in order to bend the roofing material along the edge of the roof and sew it on with slats or metal tape.

When laying the roofing material, they move from the bottom up, and the roof ridge is covered with one sheet of roofing material with an overlap on both sides of the roof at once.

  • The third method involves combined laying, that is, one method of laying roofing material is used as the underlying layer, and the second is used for the outer layer.

The edges of the sheets of roofing material are fixed with wooden slats or a strip of metal. The use of rails to secure the laid roofing material is not always justified, since over time the rails can begin to harass, and as a result, in some places they simply stop pressing the roofing material to the roof. Water begins to flow into these places, the wind blows garbage, sand, dust, dry leaves from trees there. As a result, the process of decay begins, and the roofing begins to require repair.

Often, wooden slats are used for laying roofing felt over an old shingle coating on rustic wooden houses. In such cases, the rail perfectly presses the roofing material to the irregularities of such a coating.

Therefore, for new houses with flat roof slopes, metal tapes - steel or aluminum - are more often used.

Also overlaps of sheets of roofing material on each other can be additionally coated with preheated mastics or bitumen for gluing them together.

Roofing repair

In order to repair leaky places on the roof of a wooden house covered with roofing material, you need to perform only a few simple steps.

What you need to have available:

Bituminous mastic, a roll of roofing felt, a carpenter's knife or scissors, a brush with hard bristles, a hammer, nails and pliers.

  • Bubbles with water or air are cut with cross-shaped incisions, the space of the bubbles is cleaned and dried from the inside.
  • Areas of rotten or torn roofing material are removed with a knife to even edges in large whole sections.
  • The edges of the old roofing material are cleaned with a brush from debris, sand, dust. You can also treat them with gasoline.
  • If necessary, remove a section of the metal tape and nails so that they do not fall under the new roofing material, which they can then easily tear from the inside.
  • A patch prepared in advance in size from a new roofing material is glued overlapping onto the repaired area on the heated mastic.
  • The edges of the patch are strongly pressed and smoothed out so that voids do not form in the places of gluing. Then the patch can be completely smeared again with mastic or bitumen.

Sometimes, after completing all the measures to clean the problem areas, dry the bubbles and remove the rails, tapes and nails, the entire roof is simply re-covered over the old roofing material, but in this case it is better to remove the old roofing material completely.
