Components must be of the appropriate quality, like all fasteners. The wood is not used at the highest density, then the product will be light.

Metal structure bed

bed making process

First you need to prepare sketches for making a bed with your own hands. Consider the process of assembling a classic double bed.

It will be based on natural wood, it is not difficult to process it at home. In extreme cases, you can use the services of the workshop. They will help to make a high-quality cut of a tree.

For a double bed, you will need the following set of materials:

  • The legs and box are made of pine. You will need a beam section of 50x50 mm, and a length of 2200 mm (15 pcs);
  • 22 pieces - boards. Length, width and thickness of each - 2000x100x20 mm;
  • Adhesive compositions - PVA furniture, carpentry glue;
  • Fasteners - self-tapping screws;
  • Metal corners - width 50 mm.

The internal size of the main box should be 2100x1700 mm. After downloading from the Internet the drawings and dimensions of the beds made by ourselves, we proceed to the assembly.

Assembly sequence

The height of the box should be up to 200 mm, and its width of the sidewalls should be 50 mm. Therefore, you need to glue a few bars. Carpenter's glue is applied to each side, and each blank is fastened in a group of up to 4 pieces.

Glued bars are adjusted to the desired dimensions. Side blanks should have a length of 2200 mm. Central longitudinal jumper - 2100 mm, and two end panels of 1610 mm.

Corner joints are made according to the type of lock. To do this, the upper and lower bars of 50 mm are cut off. On the end blank, a cut of the central bar is made. Next, the docking points are treated with glue, and driven into the groove. The stages of manufacturing and assembling the bed should be carefully observed.

Then the central transverse jumper is mounted - 2000 mm. Stop bars are installed on the underside of the box. The central longitudinal partition will rest on them.

Legs are mounted in the corners, fastenings are made using self-tapping screws and bolts. To prevent the center from sagging, a few more supports are attached to the jumper located in the middle.

Additional shelves are mounted on the sidewalls of the frame in order to lay overlapping boards on them. After them, the flooring of the crossbars is made, but so that they do not lie tightly to each other.

The last step is surface treatment. This is a brief instruction on how to make a bed with your own hands.

Finally

In order for the bed to turn out to be of good quality, and to serve for more than a dozen years, you need to select the right materials. A novice carpenter should know what is best to make a bed frame. Larch or birch can be used as a reliable and durable material.

In the process of making furniture at home, you need to have good tools. The installation of parts should be carried out carefully, and slowly, then you can enjoy the process, and the end result will be pleasing to the eye.

  1. Attach the resulting quadrangular product to the wall with a perforator;
  1. Fix the lifting mechanism and gas springs with the sides of the cabinet;
  1. Connect the bed frame to the lifting mechanism. It is very important to use strong bolts and fasten the materials as tightly as possible, since this place has the greatest loads;
  1. Fix the lamellas;
  1. Install the base of the bed from a chipboard sheet. On the reverse side, it can be pasted over with special paper, wallpaper or painted. This surface will look like a regular cabinet;

Finish the edges and remove any excess with a damp cloth. Make blind holes in the top of the legs and screw 1 1/4″ bolts into the top support bar. Glue the joints and make sure the corners are square. Drill holes (blind) on both sides of the bottom pieces (including the 2x6 crossbar) and attach them to the legs with 2 1/2″ bolts.

Next, attach the 1x2 planks to the headboard. Drill holes (blind holes) on both sides of each plank and attach them to the frame with 1 1/4″ bolts and glue. Arrange the planks parallel to each other at the same distance and make sure the corners are square.

Next, attach the 1x6 bars to the headboard, making sure they are evenly spaced apart. The recommended width of the bottom and top rails is 4″ (10.16 cm). Sand the edges with sandpaper and drill blind holes on both sides. Take the 1 1/4″ bolts and use them to attach the crossbars to the frame. Glue the joints, remove the remaining glue with a damp cloth.

Make a 2x2 wood footboard for a double bed. Make blind holes in the top of the legs and attach them to the top support bar with 1 1/4″ bolts. Make sure the corners are square and the edges are flush before inserting the 2 1/2″ bolts. Cut the 2x6 crossbars to size and drill blind holes on the sides and top. Position the crossbar in relation to the frame and secure it with 2 1/2″ bolts and glue.

Position the 2x8 side supports on the sides of the bed frame. Make blind holes in the crossbars, align the top edges and screw in 2 1/2″ bolts to create a fixed connection. Add glue to the joint, remove the remaining glue with a damp cloth.

One of the last steps in the project is to install 1x6 bracing bars on the inside of the bed frame and 2x6 supports in the middle of the frame as shown in the bed drawing. Drill blind holes on both sides of the fixing strips and attach them to the frame with bolts and glue. Position the fastening strips 3/4″ (1.91 cm) under the top edge of the side supports.

Attach the 1x4 support bars to the rungs using 1 1/4″ bolts. Glue the joints, remove the excess. Make sure you place the support bars evenly spaced, make sure the corners are 90 degrees.

And the last - finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood filler and let dry. After that, sand the wooden surface using fine-grained sandpaper, remove the residue.

Tip: Coat the wood components with a few coats of paint to protect them from rotting and improve the look of the double bed.

Now in furniture stores it is possible to choose any model of bed, but there are many reasons why many non-people cannot purchase the model they like. So the question often arises of how to make a bed with your own hands and at the same time save quite a good amount.

Varieties of bed models

Before you settle on a specific bed model that you want to make, you need to know about some of them. This is necessary so that you can evaluate all the nuances of the design and evaluate your strengths and capabilities. Furniture designers and builders have developed a large number of variations, and most of them you can do yourself.

The main difficulty of the self-assembly process is mainly hidden during the preparation and processing of all structural elements, because for such operations it is often necessary to have a special tool. But in any case, in order to start creating such furniture, you need to familiarize yourself with different models made from various materials.

Bed with drawers

A bed equipped with pull-out drawers can be:

  • double;
  • single;
  • one and a half.

Such models of beds are especially in demand in children's rooms, where there are always a lot of toys and other items for classes. This design is convenient, as it does not take up free space in the room, and helps create a place to store various items in the room. At the same time, by pulling out such a drawer, you will immediately see what is in it, and you will not need to go deep, for example, into the depth of the closet, where it is so hard to find the right things.

The design of such a bed is not particularly difficult compared to a regular bed. The main thing here is to draw up good drawings, and correctly enter all dimensions into them, competently process the parts that will be intended for assembly, also assemble them well and choose convenient and high-quality fittings. Drawers should open easily, that is, move freely, for this you can use guide-type mechanisms on the sides or attach wheels to the bottom of the drawer.

hanging beds

This interesting option for a bed is not as difficult to manufacture as you might think. One of the most important requirements that must be observed in order for this design to function effectively is a large amount of free space, because the bed is designed to swing in a certain range.

The sleeping place has a frame, which includes a frame and lamellas, but here it should be borne in mind that all elements should be made of high quality material and securely fastened to each other. For such a design, it is necessary to use only light wood so that there are no heavy loads on the supports. The mattress, which can be overweight, should also have the same qualities.

Metal beds

Beds that are made from metal corners, strips, rods and fittings can only be made by experienced welders, but this version of the bed can last you a long time and will not require repairs, and will not bother you with its squeak. Especially well a metal bed will fit into a certain style of your interior, for example, modern, retro or empire.

Heavy in weight and stable design has a light appearance and even seems weightless, so it will perfectly fit into any interior and become its decoration. For most, metal is associated with negativity - it is rust, which can leave stains on a mattress or bed linen. Do not be afraid of this, since in our time the technologies are well developed, with the help of which paints and varnishes have been developed that protect not only your bedding, but also metal from corrosion. On this design, the mattress will never sag and will always be well ventilated, because the frame has a high level of rigidity.

Transformer: bed-wardrobe

A bed that can be turned into a closet at any time is an indispensable piece of furniture in small apartments, and this design can also be made by hand, you just need to buy a lifting and supporting mechanism. Here you can easily clean the bed and turn it into an imitation of a nightstand or wardrobe.

A transforming bed can be of different sizes, it becomes an imitation of a large closet or become a compact chest of drawers with a table top. The latest model can be used in the children's room as a main bed or as an extra bed if guests arrive. In addition, in some cases this design is placed on a loggia or on a balcony with insulation, since in the summer it is always nice to relax in the fresh air.

The most difficult moments in the manufacture of such a model are the choice of lifting mechanisms, and, of course, the high-quality processing of all components so that it can be easily assembled and disassembled, and at the same time there were no jamming and distortions of the structure.

Bed-podium

Another variation of the bed that will help you save space in a small room is a podium bed. The essence of this design is that the place to sleep does not take up extra space in the room, because the bed can be removed during the day under the podium, which the child can use for games or for classes.

New design solution: podium bed

Such a bed model is not difficult to produce, but for such furniture it is necessary to prepare only high-quality materials, and the work will take a lot of time. But in the end, you will get an excellent result, because you will have a comfortable place to sleep and an interesting design solution.

In addition to those models that were listed from the most popular and frequently selected models, one can distinguish such as:

  • bed with lifting mechanisms;
  • with orthopedic frame;
  • bunk;
  • with frames made of wooden lamellas;
  • sofa bed and many others.

We will consider some of them in more detail.

  • pine timber for legs and boxes, having a section of 50 by 50 mm, their length should be 2200 millimeters in the amount of 15 pieces;
  • wood glue or PVA for furniture;
  • self-tapping screws 40 and 65 mm;
  • metal corners with a shelf width of 50 mm.

The frame that will be produced is intended for a mattress that has dimensions of 2000 by 1600 mm, so the space inside should be of such dimensions 2100 by 1700 mm, and the dimensions on the outside should be 2200 by 1800 mm.

Carrying out work

Because the box for the bed frames should be 15 cm or 20 cm high, and the walls should be 5 cm wide, the timber should be glued in 3-4 pieces. To do this, the sides of the bars are smeared with glue, then they are laid one on top of the other, pressed with clamps and left to dry.

After that, the blanks that you glued should be adjusted to the dimensions you need. Thus, in order to assemble the box, you will need panels for the sides (sides), having a length of 2200 mm, one strip of 210 cm for the jumper in the middle, and two jumpers for the ends of 161 cm long.

In order for the corners to have a secure locking connection, 5 cm are measured along the edges at the top and bottom, and these fragments are carefully sawn off and removed without reaching the middle bar. After that, the parts that protrude from the sides are smeared with glue and placed in the gap between the bars on the end panel of the box. Then they are compressed with clamps and left to dry.

You can do it differently by using a connection like a binding of bars. Here the bars are glued into the box already trimmed. The bars of the first row are laid out on a flat floor, which form a rectangle. The sides on the sides should have a length of 210 cm, the end 150 cm. The parts of the bar of the panels on the sides are smeared with glue, and the bars of the end side of the box are pressed against them, and then they are fastened with self-tapping screws. The corners in the rectangle are set using a construction square and checked by measuring the diagonals, which must be of the same length. Then it is necessary to glue the middle row to the row below, the length of the bars on the sides should be 220 cm, and the part from the end 170 cm. The ends are smeared with glue and placed between the other two bars on the sides, then the whole structure is fixed. Then a row in the middle, in addition to glue, is also attached to the bottom row with self-tapping screws. In the very top and last row, the bars should have the same size as the bottom row and it is fixed with self-tapping screws under the sweat and left to dry. This assembly method is more difficult, because if the master does not have certain experience, the corners can turn out to be skewed.

The next step is to fix the element in the middle of the structure. The part is a jumper that is glued together from 2 bars with a length of 200 cm. Before fixing the jumper, the bed box should be turned over, the end sides are marked so that you can accurately determine the middle. The jumper at the bottom must match the level of the entire box. After that, on the row below the box, where the places were marked, it is necessary to fasten the bars of the persistent type, which are 15 cm long. They will become a support for the main partition. In order to join these supporting elements in the lower bar of the jumper, 5 cm from the edge are selected. Parts are fixed with glue and screws. As a support, you can use a metal corner with a shelf of 5 cm, it is necessary to drill holes in it for fixing to the walls of the box and to the cross bar. The already finished jumper will serve as an additional basis for the boards that will be laid on the box.

This model is equipped with 4 legs in the corners. They should also be bolted or self-tapping now while the box is upside down. As legs, pieces of timber with a dimension of 5 by 5 cm are taken. The legs are attached to the structure first with glue, and then with self-tapping screws or bolts through, and as an additional fastening, it is recommended to use metal corners on both sides. You choose the height of the legs yourself, but in most cases it is 20-30 cm. The lower the legs, the more stable the bed will be, but a small height will complicate the cleaning process.

Also, in order for the central part not to sag, additional supports must be attached to the lintel in the middle, so the bed will be more reliable and will not lose rigidity. Support legs in the middle can be fixed in different ways.

After the glue is completely dry, you can turn the box in the correct position and put it on its legs.

Then, on the panels of the box, lines are marked on the sides along which the beam or boards will be fixed, having a width of 3 - 4 cm with a thickness of 2.5 - 3 cm. This beam will become a support for installing floor boards. These boards should be positioned so that they are flush with the lintel in the center. Masters are guided by the lines of gluing the timber from above, if you did everything correctly, then the overall level will be accurate.

The next step is laying boards on top of the supporting shelves. The boards should not rest against the sides of the box, otherwise squeaks may appear during operation. So between the box and the boards there should be a small gap of 4 - 5 mm on both sides.

It is not necessary to lay the boards with a solid shield, they are laid in such a way that there is a distance of 2–4 cm between them.

The boards are fixed at three points, from the edges to the supporting shelves, and in the center to the longitudinal support. At each of the points, two self-tapping screws are screwed, having a length of 4 cm. To prevent cracks from appearing, holes for self-tapping screws should first be drilled at the fastening points with a drill with a diameter of 3 mm.

When the installation of the boards is completed, it is necessary to view all surfaces of the structure. If necessary, remove large burrs, glue leaking from the seams and other shortcomings.

After that, the finishing processing of the assembled structure begins. Initially, all surfaces should be brought to an even state. For such wood processing, it is best if you use a grinder, on which sandpaper with the required grit is installed, sandpaper 80 - 100 is used first, and then 280 - 400.

If you do not have a special tool, then you can use an electric drill by simply placing a nozzle designed for grinding on it. After such processing, it is necessary to look at all the details of the product and, if necessary, process some places manually. Then the entire structure is cleaned of dirt and dust and small sawdust, in other words, the product is being prepared for coating.

Before varnishing the wood, it must be covered with primer. If you are going to use stain, then the soil is not necessary to use. To do this, use a sprayer or brush.

Then, if you are going to highlight the texture of wood, then after the stain has dried, you need to once again process all surfaces with sandpaper.

All sides of the structure should be covered with stain, even those that are not visible. This is necessary, since the stain is an antiseptic and protects the tree from pests.

The next process is varnishing the product. A water-based varnish is the best choice here, especially if you are doing all the work indoors. This type of varnish does not have an unpleasant odor, is environmentally friendly, and after complete drying, your bed will acquire a pleasant matte sheen. In order for the bed to look beautiful, you need to apply several layers of varnish and at the same time remember that the next layer is applied only after the previous layer has dried.

In between drying layers of varnish, you can make a decorative headboard for the bed. You can take 3 boards with a width of 100 - 120 mm, with a length of 160 cm, and 12 pieces of boards with a height of 40 - 46 cm. A lattice is constructed from them and processed in the same way as a bed, and then nailed to the wall.

Double bed with lifting mechanism

Another variation of a double bed is a model made using chipboard. In this design, compared to the previous one, there are no legs, and this makes it much more stable. The positive side of this bed is that you can use the space under it, because it is equipped with lifting mechanisms that make it possible to raise the frame without removing the mattress.

Double bed made of chipboard with a mattress that rises

The disadvantages of this model include its massiveness, it does not allow you to install it in a small room. In addition, a material such as chipboard cannot be called completely environmentally friendly, because it is produced using binding elements that can emit harmful fumes, which negatively affects people.

It should be borne in mind that when choosing furniture to be made from DPS, it is necessary to create all conditions so that the room is effectively ventilated where the furniture will be located. And for the production of a bed, it is necessary to buy chipboard boards that have an E1 formaldehyde emission class.

Thus, for the manufacture of a bed with the usual dimensions of mattresses 180 by 200 by 20, the following materials should be prepared:

  • DPS plate with a thickness of 1.6 cm and dimensions of 350 by 175 cm;
  • two sheets of fiberboard with a thickness of 0.5 cm, the usual size is 2745 by 1220 mm;
  • timber with a section of 5 by 5 cm, 18 meters long;
  • a board having a thickness of 10-15 mm, a width of 6 cm, a length of 20 m or plywood of 1 cm, with dimensions of 1525 by 1525 mm;
  • lifting mechanism equipped with shock absorbers;
  • bolts and screws;
  • metal corners;
  • fabric to sheathe the structure, which has a width of 150 cm and a length of 500 cm;
  • synthetic winterizer width 160 cm, length 500 cm;
  • two sheets of foam rubber, thickness 1 cm, dimensions 300 by 100 cm;
  • staples for stapler 8-10 mm.

Having prepared everything you need, you can begin to make the entire structure.

From chipboard having a thickness of 1.6 cm is produced:

  • headboard with dimensions of 1080 by 2130 mm, it can be made rounded or with right angles;
  • side panel design 2 pieces, dimensions 2330 by 350 mm;
  • one end panel with dimensions 2130 by 350 mm;
  • the partition inside is one with dimensions of 2010 by 280 mm.

Elements made of timber 50 by 50 mm, which are fixed in the box:

  • longitudinal parts, they are fixed on the panels on the sides 2 pieces, have a length of 2010 mm;
  • cross member, for end panel one 1810 mm long;
  • racks with a height of 10 cm 4 pieces.

Elements from a bar 50 by 50 mm produced for the lift frame:

  • longitudinal parts for the crate inside five pieces with a length of 2005 mm;
  • transverse elements for the crate inside 2 pieces with a length of 1805 mm.

Lamella sawn from plywood or boards measuring 60 by 15 by 1805 mm - 11 pieces.

Sheathing the bottom of the box 2 sheets of fiberboard with dimensions of 1650 by 2330 mm.

Having prepared all the necessary elements in order to assemble the structure, you can start trimming and assembling all the parts.

Step by step work

If you are going to make a rounded headboard, then the template must first be made on paper, and then transferred to chipboard and cut out with a jigsaw. It is important to take into account the fact that the headboard must be pressed against the wall, so the whole structure will be stronger. Usually at the junction with the floor and walls there is a plinth, which has a different width. Thus, from above in the center of the headboard, a support element is specially fixed from a bar or a piece of chipboard, which has the same thickness as the plinth. With it, you will provide an emphasis for the back against the wall. You can, of course, remove part of the baseboard in the place where the bed will be located.

After that, you should try on the details of the box to the headboard in the place where the installation will be carried out. Then, the delivered panels of the chipboard box are fixed to each other in the corners using a piece of bars or metal corners. The headboard is not attached yet, because, as initially, it must be upholstered with a cloth. And on the attached panels they try on elements from the bars.

Lamellas are tried on across the already laid bars and their location is marked.

The next thing to do is to sheathe the head of the bed with foam rubber. Here you need to use a stapler and staples. The foam rubber is aligned and initially fixed in front of the panel.

Then its edges are wrapped and attached with staples on the back of the panel.

The fabric that you have chosen for this is stretched over the foam rubber. It is better to buy a dense fabric that repels dust.

The sheathing work begins at the bottom of the panel, and then the fabric is carefully stretched and attached in the same way as the foam rubber at the back of the panel.

Now you can fasten the already upholstered headboard to its location.

Then you need to make a frame for the lifting frame. All parts are assembled and fixed using metal corners. All the bars, there are five of them, must be placed at the same distance, it is worth starting from the middle of the entire structure. The beam in the middle should rest on a chipboard partition, which in turn is fixed in the box of the bed itself. After you have assembled the frame, it is temporarily removed to the side.

Then, both inside and outside the walls of the box, it is necessary to sheathe using a stapler, the synthetic winterizer is initially fixed, and then the same fabric with which you sheathed the headboard for the bed.

The next step is the fixing and marking on the frame of the parts that relate to the lifting mechanism.

After all these manipulations, it is necessary to try on the frame to the box and mark the place where the beam will be installed on the side panels of the box, on which the second part of the parts of the lifting mechanism will be installed.

After that, the beam is fixed, and the fixed elements of the lifting mechanism are screwed to it, and the design is tested. The timber is fixed on the chipboard with the help of self-tapping screws, which are 5 cm long. The caps of these self-tapping screws should be recessed into the tree by 0.5 - 1 mm.

Then, lamellas are attached to the frame transversely to the bars with the help of self-tapping screws.

When the bed is folded, the lifting mechanism is located in a special niche between the bars. A semicircular cutout is cut out on the partition, where the element of the lifting mechanism will be located.

Now the entire structure is installed on the panel on the side, so that it is convenient to carry out subsequent work.

The next step is to prepare the chipboard sheets with which you will sheathe the bottom of the bed box. This will make it possible to build a space where you can store different things.

Sheathing can be done using brackets or self-tapping screws with a small length and diameter, but they must have wide caps.

After installing the bottom, the bed can be lowered and set in place.

Wooden elements are installed on the beam on the side inside. They are necessary in order to ensure the rigidity of the structure when the bed is folded. In addition, similar elements are located in the corners of the box.

In order to ensure a comfortable lifting of the frame along with the mattress, fabric loops or a kind of handle are fixed in front. They are screwed with self-tapping screws, which have wide caps to the bar from the end of the structure.

The furniture market in our country is quite saturated with models of domestic and foreign production, in the manufacture of which various materials and components are used. Nevertheless, there are situations when, for some reason, there is a desire or need to make some thing with your own hands from improvised or initially required materials. A do-it-yourself bed made of wood - step-by-step instructions for making single, one and a half and double models, as well as a house bed and using a lifting mechanism - this is the topic of this article in the HomeMyHome online magazine.

Wood is an environmentally friendly material, so it is in demand in the manufacture of furniture for various purposes.

When making furniture yourself, a very important point is the correct selection of wood species, because. not all of them are equally good both in work and in further use. All tree species are divided into three categories:

  • Soft - coniferous, linden, alder and aspen.
  • Solid - birch, oak, beech, ash and larch.
  • Particularly hard - acacia, yew and boxwood.

In addition, different breeds differ in cost and availability, therefore, when making furniture yourself, you should also pay attention to this point. Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the required tools and fixtures, material and necessary fittings, as well as mechanisms, if any. The next step will be the development of a sketch or drawing of the manufactured product with the study of the connection points of individual elements, as well as options for decorating wooden surfaces.

DIY wooden bed - step by step instructions

All work on the independent manufacture of a wooden bed can be divided into several stages: preparatory, manufacturing and assembly, decoration and decoration.

Preparatory stage

During this period, the dimensions of the manufactured piece of furniture are determined, and since a mattress is placed on any bed, its perimeter must correspond to its dimensions.

Note! The dimensions of factory-made beds are regulated by the requirements of GOST 19917-2014 “Furniture for sitting and lying. General technical conditions".

Based on the requirements of GOST and the dimensions of manufactured mattresses, the dimensions of the manufactured bed must comply with the following values, namely:

Important! Custom-made furniture may differ from standard sizes, in which case the mattress and bedding must also be ordered (made) individually.

Production of a wooden bed of a special design

Sometimes there are such cases that it is necessary to have a bed of a non-standard shape or design, these include the following: and a bed-house, with a lifting mechanism and other technical devices.

How to make your own bunk bed at home

The steps for making a bunk bed are exactly the same as in the case of a conventional design, the only difference is that two beds are located one above the other.

As a rule, a bed of this design is intended for children, therefore, during its manufacture and installation, special attention should be paid to such points as:

  • the quality of the materials used - they must be able to create a solid and reliable design;
  • fastening the bed to the floor and, if necessary, to the wall must prevent the possibility of tipping over during use.
Note! To climb to the second tier, a different staircase design (attached, attached, etc.) can be used, which depends on the location and availability of free space, as well as the author's abilities of the developer.

Making your own bed-house

A bed-house is also an option for arranging a sleeping place for a child, which can be single or bunk, depending on the number of children in the family, as well as the design idea for such a piece of furniture.

There can be a huge number of design options for this type of bed, and only the financial component of this process and the design abilities of the design developer can become limitations. Depending on the gender of the child and his interests, the bed-house may include sports equipment and playgrounds, a work or school corner. Due to the significant overall dimensions, it is difficult to place beds of this type in a room of standard sizes, therefore, as a rule, owners of suburban real estate and large-sized apartments turn to such furniture.

Features of making do-it-yourself beds with a lifting mechanism

For owners of small apartments and studio apartments, the issue of effective use of usable space is very important. One of the options for rational use in this case is the purchase and operation of a bed with a lifting mechanism.

Note! The lifting mechanism installed in the design of the bed allows you to expand its functionality by adding one more thing to the main purpose (rest-sleep) - storage of things and bedding.

A bed with a lifting mechanism can be made independently, while you should be aware of some of the nuances of the work, which can be formulated as follows:

  • the dimensions of the internal space must comply with the requirements for them (the volume depends on the height of the legs and the width of the side walls of the product);
  • the convenience and reliability of its operation depends on the type of the chosen lifting mechanism;
  • the strength of the lifting mechanism must correspond to the size and weight of the bed;
  • the design of the fixation of the lifting mechanism (vertical or horizontal) must comply with the requirements for the bed.
Note! Lifting mechanisms of industrial production are of three types: manual hoist, spring system and gas shock absorber hoist.

When making it with your own hands, the master doing the work chooses the type of lifting mechanism, as well as the materials used for the load-bearing elements of the structure, and its decoration.

  2. Assembling a double bed
  3. Headboard Assembly

The furniture market offers a large selection of beds, but you can make this element of the interior on your own.

The article describes how to make a double bed from available materials and components. Solid wood furniture can be inexpensive.

If you are a fan of the old fashioned style and at the same time have welding skills, you can make a bed for a country cottage, a private house or a city apartment from a profile pipe, and decorate the headboard with decorative forging elements. We will consider a more affordable and simple option for creating bedroom furniture, and we suggest you make a wooden bed from materials that are absolutely safe for health. Below are the drawings of the simplest options, which even a novice master can easily handle.

Materials and tools

You will need:

  • assembly diagram;
  • sheet plywood;
  • PVA glue;
  • wooden beam;
  • slats;
  • self-tapping screws (70 pieces).

You will need glued pine timber with a smooth, flawless surface, 4 x 5 x 200 cm in size (14 pcs.). The size of the planed rails is 2 x 10 x 200 cm (20 pcs.). Before making a bed, you need to buy a sleeping mattress 160 x 200 cm, already make a base for it.

Assembling a double bed

The rectangular frame is assembled from beams. It is necessary to take three bars on each side, fasten them together in height. You will get an equilateral rectangle. If there is concern that the mattress will not fit, it is recommended to assemble the frame with an allowance of 1 cm on each side.

2 bars with a section of 4 x 5 cm, 162 cm long (ends) and the same parts 201 cm long (sides) are laid out on the floor, coated with PVA glue. Immediately after this, the second row of bars is laid on top. Then all the details are fixed with self-tapping screws. The crowns of the bed should not be skewed, they should turn out to be perfectly even.

At the corners, the parts are connected with metal ties. When tightening the self-tapping screws, the glue that did not have time to grab will show through the holes outward, so the wood must be cleaned of its excess.

The assembled frame can be set aside, you can start creating an orthopedic slatted base from processed boards 2 cm thick. The slats must be reinforced with a stiffener, it must run in the center of the bed along its entire length. There should be at least 2-3 legs. It is also necessary to make 4 legs for the frame. In the future, they are installed in the corners, securely fixed with fasteners.

For a bed made of boards, you need a base made of slats or slats. Supports are made of wooden beams. The beam is cut into segments corresponding in length to each side of the bed. The support bars are attached at the level of the second row of the frame along the entire inner perimeter. The thickness of the supporting element is sufficient to ensure that the thin rack base is located on it firmly and reliably.

It is recommended to plan the length of the rails with the expectation that a deformation gap should form between them and the frame, preventing cracking of the natural material, excluding its creaking. It is better to mount the slats at a distance of 20-30 cm from each other. The step between them should be the same, a template may come in handy. The slats are fixed with self-tapping screws, which are twisted along the edges to the base and in the center to the stiffener. After that, a homemade bed should settle for several days until the glue dries completely.

Next, decorative processing is carried out. First, all parts are polished with a grinder or grinder, including a nozzle with a large grain. Then, with the help of fine-grained emery, fine grinding is carried out along the wood fibers.

After grinding and polishing, they get rid of the dust formed during the processing. In the room in which work with paint and varnish material will be carried out, it is necessary to do wet cleaning.

The furniture is covered with a primer designed to protect wood. Lacquer is applied on top in stages in 2-3 layers with an airbrush, providing a uniform coating.

You can also use a fine-bristled brush.

In the process of varnishing, the bed must be turned over, allowing each layer to dry.

Headboard Assembly

To work, you need a sheet of thick plywood. The result is a plywood element, which is not subject to a special mechanical load. Its strength is sufficient. You also need a dense upholstery fabric, foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, a furniture stapler with staples.

A rectangle of the required size is cut from the plywood sheet with a jigsaw. A layer of foam rubber of any thickness, similar in size, is laid on top of it. Foam rubber can be covered with synthetic winterizer. Then the headboard is pulled up with furniture upholstery fabric.

The piece of fabric should extend at least 15–20 cm onto the back wall.

When fixing the upholstery with a stapler, it is necessary to provide the fabric with a uniform stretch, without creases, ugly folds on the front surface. The headboard is attached to the wall or bed frame. In the first case, the part is equipped with special eyelets-loops. They are hung on self-tapping screws installed in the wall. If the headboard is fixed to the back of the bed, holes are made in its lower part, as in the base of the furniture. Screws are tightened in them, clamped with nuts.

According to the same scheme, a single bed can be equipped with a headboard. Figured headboards decorated using the carriage tie technique will look good. In this case, you will need a stencil, furniture buttons, decorative nails.

There are many types of carriage ties, if you wish, you can choose the one that will decorate the bed, emphasize the style of the room, make it more expressive.
