Blue-eyed American-Australian Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson is one of the most popular actors in Hollywood, having an American-Australian origin. He also works as a director, screenwriter and producer. Winner of two Oscars and a Golden Globe Award for directing the film Braveheart.

Australian childhood

Mel Gibson was born into an Irish family and became the sixth of eleven children. The boy was nicknamed Chalk in honor of the saint, who is the patron saint of Ardag, the motherland of the future actor's mother, and the second, double name Colm-Kille, the man received in honor of the Irish Saint Columbus.

In 1978 the family emigrated to Australia.. It was here that they decided to have five more children. Thanks to the 145 thousand dollars that Mel's father sued from his own company, in the near future it was possible to forget about financial difficulties. Gibson graduated from high school already in Australia, and after that he decided to enter the Sydney National Institute of Theater Arts.

First film roles

For the first time on wide screens, the actor came out in 1979.. First he got a role in the film "Tim", and then in "Mad World". By the way, already for the first roles, Mel was awarded several awards in different categories. Soon the young actor met his future wife Robin. It is also known that Gibson met his chosen one through a swear agency. Mel and Robin married in Adelaide in 1980. They had seven children during their married life.(two daughters and five sons).

Mel Gibson became an actor quite by accident. He was forced to audition at the insistence of his sister. On the eve of the casting, he had a good fight, and the producers just needed a guy who looked great in the frame with a mutilated face. One day in 1981, Mel Gibson woke up a real star. It happened after the release of the second part of today's cult action movie "Mad Max". After such a successful role in the film, Mel began his Hollywood career. Here, in 1984, he made his debut in the film The Bounty.

The beginning of directing

Already in the early 1990s Mel Gibson created his own film company and called it Icon Productions. The actor, despite his little acting experience, decided to try himself as a director. The new role has become quite successful for the celebrity. He made his film debut with The Man Without a Face. The second directorial work was even more successful. The young director, under the direction of William Wallace, made an epic drama about the struggle of the Scots for independence called "Braveheart". This work by Mel Gibson was nominated for ten Oscar nominations, but won only half of them.

Shot from the film "Braveheart"

In 2004, Mel Gibson directed the shocking film The Passion of the Christ. The tape literally caused a scandal among the public. In it, the director was able to recreate in detail Palestine at the beginning of our era using Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin languages - which were spoken in time by the life of Jesus Christ.

The chalk depicted the last twenty hours of the life of the son of the Lord. There are many violent scenes in the film. Despite this, "The Passion of the Christ" was highly appreciated by Pope John Paul 2. And even despite the devastating reviews from critics, the film was a resounding success at the box office.

Mel Gibson's latest "author's" film is "Apocalypto"(2006), that is, "Apocalypse". It tells about the period of civilization of the Mayan tribe. The picture received good reviews from both critics and viewers.

Next The 2002 action movie The Patriot was a landmark film for Mel Gibson's career. In it, Mel Gibson again reincarnated as a father who lost his son and wants to take revenge on ill-wishers. Good fees and rave reviews from the audience allowed the actor to move one step up the career ladder and receive six-figure fees.

Recent films with the participation of the actor

Drama "Beaver" starring Mel Gibson

Among the latest works of the Hollywood actor, it is worth noting drama "Beaver" 2010, in which Mel Gibson successfully played the role of a depressed businessman talking to a beaver , action movie "Machete Kills" 2013, which did not become successful both in the box office and in terms of estimates, as well as "The Expendables 3" who were not even saved by the star cast. The film collected a good box office, but at the same time it was nominated for the Golden Raspberry anti-award.

The scandalous antics of Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson's father was a traditionalist Catholic, respectively, had fairly conservative views. This was the main reason for moving to Australia. So, the man said that the Second Vatican Council is a common consequence of a conspiracy between the Jews and the Masons, and the Holocaust was invented by the Zionists. Gibson himself has been criticized more than once for not challenging the views of his ancestor. The actor answered all the condemnations: “my father is my father, and the fact that someone does not agree with his views is not his problem.”

But the criticism of the correspondent of the New York Times made Mel Gibson react very violently: “I want to finish him off. I want to hang his insides on a stick. I want to shoot his dog." About the same words were sounded to Gibson's biographer: “I think God will allow him to stand in my way. He deserves to die."

In 1984, Gibson was fined $400 and had his driver's license suspended for driving under the influence of alcohol. By the way, as the actor himself declares, his addiction to alcohol almost drove him to suicide. Nonetheless , in 2006, the star was again arrested for drunk driving. The actor acted quite brazenly, because he drank a bottle of tequila right at the wheel. And during the arrest, Mel shouted out anti-Semitic remarks. The man shouted that the cause of all wars in history is the Jews.

Mel Gibson seems to be a bit over the top

Such statements once again surprised the public: the Hollywood colleagues of the actor, television commentators and, of course, the Jewish communities began to criticize him. The actor received serious and fair comments from several major film companies at once. Mel Gibson later publicly apologized and said he found his behavior "ugly" and that he then "temporarily lost his mind".

In 1992, for obscene gestures and statements in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Gibson was accused of homophobia. However, this time Mel did not apologize for his words to homosexuals, but only confirmed his dislike with a flurry of swear words.

The actor is known to support traditionalist Catholics. In particular, he opposes stem cell research. At the same time, the actor is quite religious. After the release of The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson said that "he sees signs, signs that can be understood in the same way as traffic lights." By the way, Mel answered the following questions from Catholics about the filming: “The Holy Spirit, who acted as a traffic controller, helped me film.”

Personal life

In the spring of 2009, foreign tabloids began to spread information that Gibson had not lived with his wife Robin Moore for three years, whom he met in his youth . After these gossip, the star's wife filed for divorce, and a few days later, at the premiere of the fantastic action movie X-Men Wolverine, the director came in the company of Oksana Grigorieva. But this did not become a reason for gossip, since the actor had already been seen more than once with a girl from Russia. A little later, Mel announced that Oksana was pregnant and was about to give birth to his eighth child (by the way, at that time the Russian woman already had a son, Alexander, the child of Timothy Dalton).

In the fall of 2009, Grigorieva and Gibson had a daughter, but the couple could not become a full-fledged family. Six months later, information appeared that the most talked about couple in Hollywood intends to leave. However, because of their daughter Lucia, the former lovers agreed to maintain a warm relationship. In June, legal proceedings began between Gibson and Grigorieva. The reason for the dispute is the daughter. Parents could not decide who would raise the child. Oksana constantly accused Mel of false testimony, the court, in turn, ordered the star to pay child support to the girl's mother in the amount of 60 thousand dollars and pay for the house in which they live.

But the conflict was not settled on this - the media began to actively talk about the fact that Gibson punched Oksana twice in the face and even knocked out her tooth. Doctors confirmed this and found that Grigoryeva also had a slight concussion. In the spring of 2001, the actor was sentenced to three years' probation and a $400 fine. In addition, Mel worked 16 hours - almost a day he was forced to take care of children and attend a psychotherapy course to prevent domestic violence.

Interview with Mel Gibson (video)

Today there is practically no one who would not know who Mel Gibson is. A talented actor, director and producer not only starred in many films that became popular thanks to his talent, but he himself shot more than one famous picture.

In his life there were many film awards and prizes, and he also managed to become the father of a huge family. He learned to appreciate the family hearth from his parents. His biography and the first experience of acting are the moments that the actor himself narrates.

The Irish family of the future actor consisted of eleven children. Mel Colm-Sille Gerard - the real full name of the actor - was the sixth child in the family, born in the city of Pixill on January 3, 1956.

The Gibsons were immigrants. They came to the United States of America in search of a better life. A large number of children in the family is due to the religious views of his parents. They were Catholics. Father - Hutton, was a railway worker, mother - Ann, sang in the opera.

When Mel was twelve years old, a family with six children migrated across the ocean to Australia. The reason for the move was the injury received by the father at work. He could no longer continue working, but he managed to sue compensation for damages, the amount of which was one hundred and forty-five thousand dollars.

Parents did everything to ensure that the children did not need anything and were surrounded by warmth and care. Australian land became their new home, where the Gibson family was replenished with five more household members.

Graduation took place in a small provincial town in Australia. One of the school hobbies of young Mel was playing in an amateur theater. After studying, he dreamed of a big career as a journalist. However, fate decreed otherwise. One of the sisters sent an application on his behalf to the institute.

Some time later, the Sydney National Institute of Theater Arts opened its doors to him. Mel spontaneously went to the audition, which he passed thanks to his battered image the previous day in a fight. This became one of the main elements of the image that the admission committee liked.

The student life of the actor took place in one of the dorm rooms, which he shared with another future Hollywood actor - Geoffrey Rush.

Gibson's acting skills were quickly noticed. However, successful studies were hampered by the constant skirmishes that the young student got into because of his violent nature. One day after another skirmish, the future Hollywood star reconsidered her behavior and radically changed her attitude to life. This was the start of his acting career.

The first creative successes

1977 gave Mel Gibson his first film role. It was the Australian series "The Sullivan Family", and later shooting in the film called "Hot Summer". Along with roles in films, Mel was actively involved in theatrical activities (role in the tragedy "Oedipus" and the drama "Henry IV".

Two years after his acting debut, Mel Gibson landed his lead role, which made him famous for starring in the post-apocalyptic action movie Mad Max.

Profitable roles in box-office films at this time weren't Mel Gibson's only acting career at the turn of the decade. Along the way, he starred in a melodrama called "Tim". This is a love story of a mentally retarded man, played by Mel, and a woman who was much older than him.

Films with Mel Gibson reach a huge number. The role in each of them in its own way reflects the true character of the actor. Honesty, intelligence, beauty, family values, charm - this list of personal qualities can be continued for a very long time. Heroic roles make him the idol of a large number of men, and women adore him for his charm, smile and tenderness.

Mad Max Series

A successful start at the dawn of his acting career coincided with the filming of the serial film Mad Max. This is the first role that brought Mel Gibson the first worthy fee of fifteen thousand US dollars. The main thing is that thanks to the role of a brave and fearless law enforcement officer who challenged a gang of bikers, he became famous.

The story waited for continuation of only two years. And now, in 1981, George Miller releases the second film about a desperate policeman - Mad Max: Road Warrior. Not only the success and popularity of the actor grew, but also his fee, which has increased tenfold since the first film.

In 1985, the next part of the picture "Mad Max: Under the Thunderdome" was released. Mel Gibson shared the lead role in this film with Tina Turner.

Lethal Weapon Series

The next film that became a worldwide breakthrough in Hollywood cinema, starring Mel Gibson, was Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon. This is the story of the fearless police officer Martin Riggs. For the first time, this series introduced the world to the tactics of behavior of "bad" and "good" cops. The admiration of fans is tireless until now. The film became a box office hit.

The film also had a sequel that was no less entertaining than the Mad Max story. The popularity of the actor grew along with the fees.

"Brave heart"

The historical drama film Braveheart is the second film directed by Mel Gibson himself in the title role. This is the story of the Scottish people who fought for independence. The superbly played role not only earns millions in popularity, but also tells the true life of the Scotsman William Wallace.

"What do women desire"

The picture of 2000 with the participation of a Hollywood handsome man in the title role revealed to the world community the whole essence of the female soul. One day, a callous ladies' man, who never cared about a woman's soul, becomes a woman's ears and recognizes the true thoughts of the women around him.

The picture at the global box office has gained immense popularity, collecting millions of dollars.

Receiving big fees for leading roles in Hollywood films, Mel Gibson decides to try himself as a director and opens his own studio, Icon Productions. His first own picture is the drama "The Man Without a Face". The picture was not very popular, but received very positive reviews among film critics.

"Apocalypse"

In 2006, the world was presented with a new historical film under the direction of Gibson "Apocalypse". Mel took over the role of screenwriter in the film. Describing the history of the Mayan tribes, the Hollywood actor almost ruined his entire directorial career. The film received a lot of criticism, and Mel Gibson disappeared from cinematography for a whole decade.

"Passion of the Christ"

Another directorial creation under the direction of Mel Gibson is the film The Passion of the Christ. The result of the show at the box office was stunning. Until that moment, no picture had been taken that so realistically and believably narrated the life of Jesus in the last hours before leaving.

The picture received the blessing of the Pope, which has never happened in the history of American cinema. The film was released in 2004.

Personal life

The popular actor turned to family life quite early. Family values were instilled from childhood, and at the age of 18 he starts his own family. Robin Moore, one of the candidates of the marriage agency, whose services were used by Mel Gibson, became his chosen one. Struck by Cupid's arrow right in the heart, he almost immediately proposed to the girl. A year after the marriage, the family was expected to replenish.

In less than thirty years of family life, Mel Gibson became a father seven times. The large family last replenished in 2000. But happiness was short-lived. Misunderstanding began to grow between the spouses, and as a result, the actor, constantly involved in the filming, started an affair on the side. The children could not glue the pieces of their former love together, and the family broke up in 2006.

Three years after the break, Mel Gibson became interested in Oksana Grigorieva. But this romantic story also did not have a happy ending. The daughter, born in 2010, became a stumbling block, and former lovers fought for the child in a series of legal battles.

At the moment, Gibson legally has the right to regular meetings and visits to his daughter.

Despite his addiction to theatrical activities, Mel Gibson wanted to pursue a more sought-after profession. Thanks to the perseverance of his sister, he got to audition at the theater institute.

An ardent disposition and agitated consciousness more than once dragged the actor into various troubles. One of them influenced the further fate of the actor.

Gibson has been accused of anti-Semitism many times. In fairness, screenwriter Joe Esterhaz, who worked with him, stated that the Hollywood star repeatedly allowed himself offensive remarks about Jews.

Awards and nominations

Unequal love in the film "Tim" brought the actor the first award of the Australian Film Institute.

The second directorial picture under the direction of Mel Gibson "Braveheart" brought the actor not only world recognition as a talented director, but also several awards. In 1996, the film took half of the declared nominations (there were exactly ten) at the Oscars.

Best Film and Best Director at the same time is a rare occurrence for this film award, but the actor deserved these awards.

In 2016, he presented a picture based on real events - "For reasons of conscience." This picture receives the main awards of American cinema - "Oscar" and "Golden Globe". The award for restoring reputation after a failed picture also found its hero.

Mel Gibson

In the last couple of years, most of the news related to the name is not so much about his professional achievements, but about problems and regular proceedings with the former lover of the actor Oksana Grigorieva, who is stubbornly trying to sue Gibson for more money. A few days ago, another appeared in the media, associated with a loud breakup of the couple - this time it became known that Mel would have to give Oksana $ 14 million less than she had hoped. Having looked at the last photos of Gibson on this occasion, we realized that in recent years the actor has noticeably aged and changed. So we remember and look at how the image of Gibson has changed over time in our today's column "Evolution".

Mel Gibson was born into a family of strict Catholics in the United States, as a child he moved to Australia with his parents and ten brothers and sisters, where, after graduating from school, he entered the National Institute of Theater Arts in Sydney. While still a student, Gibson played his first role in the film "Summer City", and a couple of years later he appeared in the second part of the "Mad Max" tape, which brought him worldwide popularity, so Gibson's path to fame was quite fast.

Among the other most famous paintings by Gibson, in which he acted as an actor - "What Women Want", "Patriot", "Signs", "Maverick" and others. But Mel Gibson, over his long career, tried himself not only in acting, but also in directing, which brought him no less fame: Gibson made the films "The Man Without a Face", "Braveheart" (the film received 10 nominations for "Oscar" and won five of them), "The Passion of the Christ", "Apocalypse" and "Conscientious Reasons".

From 1980 to 2011 (but in fact until 2006), Gibson was married to Robin Moore, who bore him seven children. In 2009, it became known about Mel's affair with Oksana Grigorieva, who in 2010 gave birth to his daughter Lucia, and in the same year, legal proceedings began between Mel and Oksana, which are still ongoing.

Although Mel's career developed quite successfully from the very beginning, this did not save him from harmful alcohol addiction, which, most likely, influenced the fact that over the years the former charm and beauty of the actor began to disappear. If in the same film "What Women Want" in 2000, a fresh and fit man looked at us from the screens, but now, unfortunately, Mel has lost ground. Perhaps a healthy lifestyle will still restore his former strength and beauty?

In the choice of clothes, Gibson has always been very conservative, so you will not see leopard coats and pink hats in his wardrobe. But there are more than enough classic suits and jackets, and they suit Mel, it should be noted. In the 90s, the actor, of course, also sometimes appeared in front of the cameras in leather jackets and more relaxed looks, but still most often the celebrity gave and still prefers trousers and jackets.
