And let the skeptics say “who needs gramophones and music boxes in our age of players, home theaters and computers” such a statement is refuted by all true fans of antique gizmos who have already used our services and restored broken mechanical musical products.
From the beginning to the middle of the 20th century, young people had great musical evenings, arranging dances to the gramophone. Most likely, our younger generation can hardly imagine how a gramophone looks and works, so we will briefly describe the device of a gramophone. The mechanical device, which was intended for listening to gramophone records, was called the "gramophone", which comes from the word "Pate" - the name of the company producing gramophones. The gramophone is a portable version of the gramophone, they differ in that the horn of the gramophone is small and built into the case itself.

The gramophone and gramophone operate without electricity, the drive is a spring motor, the sound amplification provides a funnel-shaped bell. In order to put the gramophone into action, you need to start it with a special handle. At the moment of each turn of the handle, the spring is compressed (the same phenomenon occurs when winding a mechanical watch), one winding of the spring is enough to listen to a musical recording with a 3-minute sounding time.

It is more understandable that more than half a century has passed since the time when gramophones and gramophones were in use, and now these mechanical devices have turned into antiques. Most collectors dream of getting a rare music box, an old gramophone or a gramophone in their collections.
But most often there are specimens that have become unusable due to careless care, dampness and as a result of long-term operation. In order to qualitatively restore damaged mechanisms, our craftsmen began to study the basics of restoring gramophones and other antique mechanisms.
In the process of repairing the gramophone and repairing the gramophone, the craftsmen discovered the similarity of these repairs with the restoration of watch mechanisms. Namely, when repairing the gramophone mechanism, the master completely sorts out all the details of the mechanism. After that, the master makes the missing parts of the mechanism, and restores the damaged parts, the old stretched or torn springs are replaced with new ones.

We accept for restoration music boxes and antique clocks with music, these wonderful inventions of the last century should not be forgotten. Music boxes are mechanical musical instruments, the melodies they play fascinate with their amazing sound. Greetings to all. A few years ago, I became interested in samovar business. Began to be interested in what are, what were in the old days and so on. And I was very surprised by such a wide variety of samovars. Gradually became interested in the issue of restoration of samovars. And now it has grown into a big hobby. Soon there was a question about his own workshop.

workshop photo

How it all started. The choice fell on the garage - it was decided to equip it as a workshop.

The first thoughts about the idea of how it will look like and where to start - this is a plan)) very symbolic and simple, but you can’t do without it.

At the same time, work was underway to insulate and improve the benefits in the garage, namely, the insulation of the gate and it was necessary to acquire a stove to heat the room. The choice fell on an almost antique potbelly stove 1956 release. It is without firewood and even then it warms the soul with its color.

Well, after they installed the potbelly stove and fired it up, you can drink tea from an electric Soviet samovar.

Gate insulation

The gates are also already practically insulated: It was decided to lay the penoplex on the mounting foam and then sew up the OSB gates.

Well, according to the tradition of the foremost at the samovar:

We will soon breathe new life into samovars

In the meantime, the samovars are already waiting for their turn and will soon go to work: what handsome men all the royal medals are - just a feast for the eyes.

Imperial coat of arms:

Meanwhile, the pipe smokes - the work is in full swing

It was decided to restore the old Soviet gramophone. Moreover, the situation at the stove with a spark just beckons to do something.

Gramophone restoration

In general, gramophones, gramophones have always attracted with their entourage - how old they are ... but someone enjoyed listening to their favorite songs with these wonderful musical instruments.

Restoration usually begins with a complete disassembly of the body and detachment of all elements of the gramophone.

To begin with, the cover opening mechanism will be removed, then the disc, tonearm, and so on ...

The disk will be cleaned, the cover for the record will be replaced - this one has already fallen into disrepair.

We unscrew all the screws, by the way they will all be for a flat screwdriver. And here is an unexpected difficulty - the screws from time to time do not lend themselves to a single screwdriver. And as a paradox, the old Soviet screws - they began to give up only before the Soviet screwdriver - that's still the quality of the products - even the screws were such that even twist into concrete. Screwdrivers licked off - but no screws. One screwdriver even turned along the axis and spun like a drill. As soon as a Soviet screwdriver fell into the hands, things moved.

Removing all attachments

The heart of the gramophone is the motor. It needs to be cleaned of old grease, because it has lost its properties and has become hard and dirty. And then apply a new special grease (CV joint grease is suitable) to all moving and rubbing elements, gears, worm shafts, and so on.

The inner tube of the gramophone - it must be cleaned of old paint and repainted.

Clean the body of the gramophone and, if necessary, replace the lining / upholstery (lederin / leatherette)

Well, according to tradition, now you can drink tea)

Workshop workbench

We digress a little. It's time to return to the construction of the most important thing - the workbench in the workshop.

It was decided to make it the entire length of the wall. Do some easy calculations. We marked the fastenings of the Soviet corner, very strong and thick metal.

They brought the material - a bar 200x50x6000 mm - this will be the base of the workbench. and 100x30x2000 - this is for all sorts of shelves and other things.

After we fixed the corners around the perimeter of the wall, now we put a beam measured along the length of the wall and put supports for the workbench and cross bars.

It was decided to put the supports in two pieces - now an elephant can sleep on a workbench))

We will add three supports along the edges along the walls along the support - in this way we get 5 support legs, two beams each per 6 m of the workbench.

I install new sockets and sew up the OSB:

Let's add a couple of shelves - the most elementary ones, so that the installation of these shelves would be as simple and quick as possible. One for a larger load with supports, and a small one for small things. We also launch shelves along the entire length of the workbench.

Well, during the breaks, such a birthday present was made for my brother:

Arrangement of the instrument, the most interesting "artistic" work

Now the easiest and most interesting job is to make everything convenient and at hand and every tool in its place.

A start has been made, I made a small shelf for screwdrivers and small things. Then the heavy artillery approached:

Concealed compact sharpener installation

In order to save space, time, money and not resort to buying special mounts and nets for the tool, it was decided to fasten everything to the OSB with screws and small home-made "devices".

For example, a small, but always necessary, grindstone was installed. In order not to take up space on the workbench, I made it on hinges with fastening under the workbench. Convenient, does not interfere and does not take up space on the workbench and is always at hand.

And now at the top:

We went for the material - Gadget's new friend:

Shelves under the workbench:

Workbench lighting

To save space on the working surface of the workbench, I mount the lighting fixtures on the walls:

Mount for the Soviet lamp from two corners - they fit perfectly. By the way, the USSR lamp is much better than modern ones - comfortable, reliable and looks colorful.

I fixed the tool, nozzles, etc. - everything is convenient and accessible, at hand.

Absorber for vacuum cleaner for garbage collection:

General view of the workbench, the picture is already looming towards the finish line:

Production of a grinding and polishing machine for samovars

Now you need to make a convenient grinding and polishing machine for the restoration of samovars. Based on what we have, namely: a motor of 3000 rpm 0.75 kW, I found a pair of Soviet pulleys: I will lower the speed to about 1000, thereby increasing power. A smaller pulley will be installed on the motor, and a larger one on the shaft. Bought two support self-centering bearings. Now you need to turn the shaft under the pulley, bearings and a seat for nozzles and felt.

Seat for nozzles and felt:

Motor spindle - a smaller pulley here, then a belt and onto the shaft:

The shaft should be sharpened from reinforcement, the revolutions will be small, strong accuracy is not required here, the belt will smooth out if there is a slight inaccuracy. All the same, not an aircraft turbine:

And here is the machined shaft with bearings and a pulley:

Now it remains to decide on the installation site and mounts for the motor suspension. I will do the tension by self-tensioning under the weight of the motor. The belt came from a classic Zhiguli - 150 rubles. Bearings, by the way, came out at 350 rubles. Quite acceptable. The shaft is made with an extension so that there is convenient access to the polishing wheel from all sides and the motor does not interfere. Therefore, simply attaching the felt to the motor is not a solution.

to be continued))

Installing the polishing machine

Initially, it was planned to install the shaft under the workbench, but after trying it on, it turned out that it turned out to be very low - so I had to make sacrifices - cut through a brand new workbench and install the shaft from above. But for convenience, it became the most.

The hole for the pulley and belt turned out to be not very large and, if necessary, you can quickly fix it, anyway, I plan to cover the workbench with a sheet of metal later. It does not spoil the aesthetics strongly - so far I decided to leave it that way.

The shaft was bolted to the support bearings:

Assembly design:

At the bottom there is a belt with tension on the bolts

And actually the first trials in action of the miracle of the unit. Samovar polishing

One of the works of my workshop is a complex repair of an old gramophone. Difficult - because the owner tried to fix it on his own. As a result, the gramophone was completely disassembled, and the spring was broken. The gramophone was brought back to life - and it's wonderful. Because its owner has a father in his eighties, for whom this gramophone is a memory of his youth. When we were young and carried beautiful nonsense ...

Gramophone repair

The gramophone is the younger brother of the gramophone, 50 years younger. In this case, it was made in the 1950s. Unlike the gramophone, it is devoid of a trumpet - a bell to amplify the sound. Her role is played by a snail hidden in the body of the gramophone. Another feature of the gramophone (however, the gramophone is not without this drawback) - the sound volume is not adjustable. He always plays to the fullest. And I must say, the volume of his hoo! All the neighbors start dancing.
During the repair, it was possible to get a replacement spring. Got it from another gramophone. Everything was cleaned of rust, moving parts were lubricated, assembled, glued the felt round and the body. The gramophone works like it did 70 years ago.

How to repair a gramophone with your own hands

The best way to repair an old gramophone with your own hands is to take it to my workshop with your own hands. It will be the fastest and cheapest. Probably someone is having success with such a repair. But what is brought to us after an amateur repair is more difficult and expensive to restore. This applies not only to the gramophone. The last samovar after a homemade repair was saved for two weeks. Initially, it was only a few hours of work.

Where can a gramophone be repaired in St. Petersburg?

Well, you already understood. Contacts in the section

Where in St. Petersburg to fix the gramophone quickly and with a guarantee?

If you ask this question to Yandex or Google, you will find that on every street there is a highly qualified specialist who will repair the gramophone in a couple of hours and give a guarantee for 2 years. Without touching on the issue of price, let's look at these promises in relation to the repair of gramophones and gramophones.

Repair of a gramophone in a few hours (option: a day or two)

Only mass standard repairs are made quickly. For example, the replacement of a heating element in a modern samovar from the Tula factory. We have a bag of different heating elements in our storerooms, you can replace the burnt one instantly. Repair of a gramophone is a rare order, often non-standard, and always with a fragile old product. Haste in such matters as in the manufacture of brandy (for women - as when visiting a hairdresser). But the main salt in the promises to immediately repair the gramophone - and spare parts from a product that has not been produced for a hundred years, are there also a bag in stock? In general, the longest process in the entire restoration is the search for a missing part or an adequate replacement.

Warranty for repairs year (two, three, ten ...)

Yes, even for life. But it's for renovation. And for used parts (and there are no others for the gramophone and cannot be) no one ever gives. And if this used part breaks down in a month, how much joy will you have with a lifetime warranty on its installation? That's it.
The list of these amazing promises goes on and on. In general, you can try. If it doesn't work out, you already know where to go.
