How to properly store things in the attic. What can not be stored in the attic: did you know about it? The insulation is laid directly on the false ceiling

Helpful Hints

When all things are stored in their places, they are much easier to find.

If you know how to store compactly things , then you can save a lot of space, and this is especially important for small apartments.

When there are a lot of things at home and all of them need to be organized, it is worth considering how and where it is better to store these things.

Here you will learn a few secrets that will help you better organize your belongings.

How to store things

1. Use a regular plate rack to store all your clutches, purses and handbags in it

2. Use an empty container, such as wet wipes, to store small bags.

Such a container, if desired, can be decorated.

For this you will need:

Glue (for fabric or hot glue).

Measure and cut the desired piece of fabric, adding about 2 cm of margin. You can cut two pieces of the same size and sew them together - this way your fabric decoration will be more dense.

Where can you store things

3. Remote controls from the TV, tape recorder, air conditioner, as well as joysticks can be stored in one place. You can not just put them in a box, but attach Velcro to each remote control, and attach it to the cabinet wall, where you glued the second part of the Velcro.

You can use regular Velcro and double-sided tape, or use self-adhesive Velcro.

4. Tweezers, tweezers and other small tools can be stored in the locker, and so that they do not fall out or get lost, stick small magnets in the locker to which small metal tools can be attached. So they will always be visible.

To do this, you will need a basket with pins on which to hang jewelry.

In this example, such a basket is made by hand using wooden sticks and a drill, which makes holes of the required diameter in order to insert pins into them.

If you use not very thick pins or thick wire, then the holes can be made with a screwdriver.

6. The organizer for shoes can be hung in the pantry, for example, to store various things in it that you want to always have at hand.

If shelves are screwed to the inside of a wooden door, then various cleaning products can be stored in them.

Also in the pantry, you can screw a few double hooks to hang various tools.

Storage in the apartment

7. Rings from an old bathroom screen can be attached to a hanger and used to store all baseball caps, scarves and T-shirts (T-shirts).

8. To make it more comfortable at your desk, you can use LEGO parts. Some of them are attached with double-sided tape to the table, while others are already attached to them.

9. If you don't already have a place to dry your clothes, use a ladder or stepladder.

In this example, a small ladder was hung from the ceiling, but you can just lean it against the wall or buy a stepladder, on the steps of which you can hang clothes.

How can you store clothes

10. Conveniently store jeans and handbags.

Many do not want to get rid of old jeans and even wear them sometimes. Over time, these things accumulate and you can mix up jeans.

For convenient storage of jeans, you will need hangers, regular rubber bands and paper or cardboard.

Just hang each pair on a hanger, cut out a small tag from cardboard or paper and write on it the signs of each pair or where you usually wear these jeans. After that, make holes in the tags and use an elastic band to attach them to the hangers.

To know where to find the necessary handbag (if you have a lot of them), you can resort to a little trick - make your own catalog of handbags.

Buy a plastic basket and put all your handbags in it. You can put handbags of different colors and styles in several small baskets.

But first, take a picture of each handbag, and put the printed photos in an album. So you will know in advance which handbag you want to take with you and where it is stored.

The same can be done with shoes - take a picture of each pair and stick the photo to the shoe box so you know which box contains which shoes.

Where to store a lot of things

11. Use ordinary baskets to store books in them.

12. Cutting boards and grates can be stored in the basket.

13. If loops are sewn to the play mat and a ribbon and rope are threaded through them, then it will be possible to instantly fold all the toys that are on it.

We store small things

14. We store all the hairpins in one place.

You will need:

Small plastic box (like the one from tik-tak)

Acrylic paint (optional).

A small box can store all the hairpins, but if you want to decorate your box, you can use acrylic paint for this. In this example, the lid was also painted, but for this you need to use spray paint, and such paint should only be used outdoors or in a well-ventilated area with goggles and a mask (such paint is poisonous).

The attic in children is associated with a place for the most interesting games. In adults - with a great alternative to the pantry. However, can everything be stored in the attic? The place where you store things that are no longer very necessary is just an attic. But - subject to proper preparation of this room. And the exclusion of objects and things that will not endure the conditions in the room under the roof. We will talk about this in our today's article.

Due to its remote location, the attic often becomes a place to store unnecessary things. It is here that correctly laid out things do not interfere, do not deteriorate. They can always be taken and used again if necessary. You need to know what can and cannot be posted here. After all, the choice of storage location largely depends on the safety of things.

To store home inventory, stocks of vegetables, things here, you must first put things in order here.

After all, a neglected attic is inconvenient, it can become a breeding ground for rodents, mold, and fungi. And yes, it's a shame to be here...

Proper preparation of the attic for storing vegetables is the key to preventing spoilage. In particular, the article tells how to store garlic in the attic and prevent the risk of damage to the crop by rodents.

Why storage in the attic can be dangerous

However, not all things and objects need to be stored in the attic. The reasons for this limitation may be the following factors:

  • temperature changes. In the under-roof space, the temperature can change dramatically. And this affects some things sharply negatively;
  • lack of sufficient air movement. Stale air is a classic feature of most attics. Materials that easily absorb odors may acquire a musty smell;
  • paper worms. Yes, these also exist. And they love books and magazines in a slightly different way than we do. They feed on them;
  • dust mites. There is not often an audit and cleaning. Because the accumulation of dust leads to the appearance of these not very pleasant insects.

Not everything we keep at home should be put under the roof. These factors can make things unusable. And also become a real source of danger!

Let's list what should not be stored in the attic

Many people keep things they don't need for years. The attic becomes a real pantry. And it is good if an audit is carried out here periodically. However, it is recommended to remember the list of things that should not be stored in the attic.

Wooden products are more at risk when stored in the under-roof space. After all, changes in temperature and humidity, insects that spoil a tree, can quickly render them unusable.

Be especially careful with wooden furniture. Antiques, furniture made of delicate woods will quickly lose their original appearance.

Fabrics and bedspreads

The moth will only be glad of such a neighborhood! And you? It is unlikely that you will like to receive items eaten by moths after a while. Natural wool, silk will lose their external beauty. In addition to moths, wasps and bees can live here. Insects will quickly build their nests in bedspreads, carpets, bedding.

If you still store bedspreads and wool products in the attic, follow these simple steps:

  • pre-clean the products thoroughly. It can be laundry, dry cleaning;
  • then dry the thing, preferably in the sun;
  • now pack the product in polyethylene. This measure will help prevent the risk of insects and dust getting inside.

Technique: is it worth storing in the attic

Humidity in the form of condensation and high temperatures will damage the equipment very quickly. Tape recorders, cassettes, even discs - all this will deteriorate after several years of being in the attic.

Kids toys

Do you want to save your toys for children and grandchildren? When storing them in the attic, there is a high risk of dust mites settling inside them. Such a "house" they will definitely like. Do you really have to part with memorable children's toys? Not necessary. It is enough to fulfill the following conditions for their storage in the attic:

  • clean and dry toys;
  • soft toys should be washed or vacuumed;
  • pack toys in dense polyethylene or plastic containers.

Now you can be calm. In prepared form, toys are stored for years in an under-roof room.

How to store photos

A prerequisite for storing photos is to prevent direct rays from falling on them. Low humidity is also desirable to maintain photo quality.

Therefore, it is not recommended to store an album with photographs in the attic.

You can save the quality of photographs when storing them in the attic by choosing the right place. A place that is dark and inaccessible to direct sunlight, packing an album with a photo in polyethylene are the most important conditions. Thus, you can save photos for a long time.

Leather things: store properly!

Skin of any kind is susceptible to moisture. Therefore, products made from it can deteriorate when stored indoors under a roof. In addition to moisture, the skin absorbs odors. And with changes in humidity, there is a high risk of mold developing on such products. The smell will be absorbed, mold and fungus will spoil the skin.

It is better to choose a different place to store leather goods.

Candles and wax products

Under the roof, the temperature can seriously rise. And if ventilation is not sufficiently organized, then there is a high risk of getting a wax puddle instead of candles. Or at least the deformation of products.

These tips will help you figure out if you can store certain types of things in the attic. Considering our recommendations, you will protect yourself from the likely experiences of damage to things due to their illiterately organized storage.

". Founders - Konstantin Zakharov from Delivery Club and Merdan Durdymuradov from startup "Hunger" - compare "Attic" with cloud data storage. The client does not have to pack things himself, take them to the warehouse, unload them, put them on shelves and remember what is where. Specially trained movers come to the house and take care of everything. The client sees everything that was sent to the warehouse on the Attic website and can, if necessary, issue a return and call the movers again. At the same time, storage prices start at 399 rubles per bike. The Village editor Olga Karaseva decided to test the service and talks about her experience.

RENT: from 0.5 cubic meters ("Cabinet") to 18 cubic meters ("Attic")

price: 700–15,840 rubles per month

Minimum shelf life: 3 months

Delivery of things: the first time - free of charge, the next - 1,490 rubles per hour

package: there is

Access to things: online

Instead of a balcony and a summer house

According to the founders of the service, now in Moscow only about 50,000 families use self-service warehouses, the rest have a garage, balcony, summer house or grandmother's apartment for this. But in such premises it is not always possible to provide the necessary storage conditions. Konstantin Zakharov and Merdan Durdymuradov say that in the Attic, all things are stored in an A-class warehouse, where insect control is carried out regularly and air humidity is kept low.

I choose a few things that I definitely won't need in the near future. A Christmas tree in a box, a snowboard with other things for skiing, a box with winter clothes and a small wardrobe will go to the warehouse. You can’t deposit expensive items, such as jewelry or a batch of iPhones, items with a strong smell, and anything that is prohibited by law. Already several times they tried to send cages with live animals to the warehouse, but they, like stuffed animals, are not taken for storage.

Cheap and compact

All my things will fit perfectly on one and a half cubic meters, which corresponds to the Balcony tariff for 1,200 rubles per month. They pick up and return them for free, you will have to pay only if you want to add something else to the things already stored in the warehouse. Then calling the movers will cost 1,490 rubles. If you need to dismantle furniture and pack a large number of items, then per-minute billing will begin from the second hour.

I leave a request on the service website, and within about an hour the operator calls me back to confirm it. You can call movers in three time intervals: from 09:00 to 13:00, from 13:00 to 17:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00. Such intervals do not seem very convenient to me. For example, it would be optimal for me to give away things before lunch, but at the same time not get up too early to meet the movers at exactly nine in the morning. I choose the day option, but I ask the operator to pick up things at a maximum of three in the afternoon. "Gazelle" appears in my yard around six o'clock in the evening with a deafening roar - the driver did not notice the gate beam and demolished it.

Zen and the Art of Carrying Things

Konstantin Zakharov says that the idea of the service arose from his own negative experience. While moving from one apartment to another, the co-founder of the service used the services of a popular company. Two loaders came to him, and in the cab of their car there was a grill with traces of recent cooking. If it was still possible to turn a blind eye to such culinary preferences, then the laziness and unwillingness to work of one of the loaders outraged Konstantin. He had to carry things himself, while the loader complained of fatigue and back pain. Therefore, in the "Attic" they decided that they would even call the employees differently. If the loader is a lazy and gloomy 40-year-old man, then the mover is a well-mannered and sociable young man.

There are no TRP standards or psychological tests for movers; at the interview, they pay attention to what a person tells about himself. Mostly, students of the last courses or recent graduates who are responsible for their first job become the movers. But among the Attic employees there are also people who used to work as furniture assemblers at IKEA. While the company is rather small, Konstantin and Merdan have the opportunity to personally get acquainted with each of the 30 movers and even travel with them to order.

Indeed, although belatedly, three cultured young men came to me, probably also familiar with the principles of meditation. Neither the collision with the gate beam nor the crowd of active citizens gathered in the yard prevented them from doing their job at all. The most enterprising residents of the house, whose energy is usually directed at each other or at public utilities, rallied together against the movers, photographed them and threatened them with imminent retribution. However, the service did not refuse to pay for the repair of the gate, they only asked for the contacts of the master who installed them, and even offered to send their own welder.

About 1% of the proceeds from all Attic orders are sent to the insurance fund, from which damage to things that may occur is compensated. Usually, in order to avoid them, customers are asked not to pack things themselves, but to entrust it to the movers. They know how much paper they need to put in the box to get the service to the warehouse safe and sound. I don’t have anything fragile, so the movers simply transferred the winter things from the bags to the boxes, and then covered everything with airtight stretch film and stuck a barcode on each item.

Waiting for reality

With the onset of the first cold weather, I decided that I would soon need warm clothes. On the Attic website in my personal account there is a photo of everything that I sent to the warehouse, with a small description. I choose one of the boxes and mark that I want it back. Everything repeats itself: a conversation with the operator and a request to bring things before one in the afternoon, so that I can have lunch at the office by two. But something goes wrong again, and the mover returns things to me after six o'clock in the evening. Indeed, where the loader would have already cursed and spat, the mover apologized for the delay and intelligently handed me the box.

The creators themselves advise leaving a request about two days before you need a thing from the warehouse, but I would take one more day with a margin. For example, if I asked in the morning to return my snowboard to fly to a ski resort in the evening, waiting for the movers would be completely different. It would seem that the service was invented in order to spend less time - you don’t need to buy boxes on your own, put things in them and take them to the warehouse ... But all the saved hours are spent waiting for the movers when you can’t go further than a convenience store . Although if you work from home or sit with children, this option is still much preferable to independent trips to the warehouse and the hassle of loading and packing.

Despite the fact that the popularity of the residential attic is growing, many supporters remain in houses with a full second floor and a cold attic. This solution allows you to reduce the cost of. In general, a cold attic is structurally simpler, however, even here, designers and builders are not at all immune from mistakes, the price of which is a decrease in the comfort and service life of the building.

Most often you have to deal with improper insulation of the attic floor. The problem is that customers are trying to reduce the cost of materials to the limit, and builders perform work in the attic extremely carelessly, confident that the owner will not carefully inspect this non-residential premises. So, let's move on to an overview of possible shortcomings.

Mistakes when arranging the attic

1. The insulation is laid directly on the false ceiling

Water vapor will inevitably seep into the thickness of the insulation, which will negatively affect its properties. In addition, gaps in the ceiling are inevitable through which particles of insulation and / or chemicals released by it will penetrate into the rooms. Before installing the insulation, plank ceilings or rough rolls along the beams must be covered with a continuous carpet of thin-layer rolled vapor barrier with an overlap of strips of at least 10 cm.

2. The insulation layer is too thin

The same requirements for thermal insulation are imposed on the attic floor as on the attic. Accordingly, the thickness of mineral wool boards or spraying of cellulose wool or polyurethane foam must be at least 200 mm (if you focus on Northern European standards, then 300 mm), low density expanded polystyrene boards - at least 150 mm. By the way, when insulating with polystyrene foam, the joints of the sheets and their junctions with wooden beams must be sealed.

3. The insulation is not protected from weathering

This paragraph refers to fibrous materials, the structure of which is destroyed by air currents over time. Mineral or cellulose wool must be tightened from above with a vapor-permeable waterproofing roll.

4. Ventilation of the attic space is not provided

Water vapor somehow penetrates the attic, and in cold weather condenses on the crate, causing it to rot. And in the summer heat, the air under the roof heats up very much and through the smallest cracks and leaks in the ceiling “flows” into the rooms on the second floor, where it also becomes hot. To avoid these troubles, you need to organize intensive ventilation of the attic. Today, most experts believe that an attic roof, like a mansard roof, should be equipped with perforated cornice spotlights and a ventilation ridge.

5. Movement is possible only on beams and boards laid here and there

The attic space can be used for laying communications, installing engineering equipment (both sometimes need revision), and. But for this you need to make movement in the attic convenient and safe, which means you can’t do without a floor, for which edged and unedged boards with a thickness of 35 mm or more or durable sheet materials (plywood, OSB, etc.) are suitable.

6. Comfortable lifting not attic and lighting are not provided

Even if you do not use the attic as a pantry, you still sometimes have to go up there - to revise roof structures, chimneys or ventilation pipes. Moreover, the need to get to the attic may arise urgently (suppose you smelled burning and overheated metal near the chimney). Going to the barn in search of a stepladder, you will lose precious minutes. Therefore, it makes sense to acquire a stationary ladder or a special folding "invisible". And of course, we must not forget about lighting - ideally, it should turn on automatically (schemes with a motion sensor or a reed switch on the hatch).

A couple of years ago, we bought a "budget" townhouse in the Moscow suburbs. The footage was proposed to be small - about 100 meters of the total area. But there was the possibility of using the space under the roof, which the developer promised to insulate and prepare for finishing for a very reasonable amount. We wanted to make a children's room there for our 5 year old son. When planning, the engineers suggested that we install two skylights - the project did not provide for more. When the house was built, it became clear that these windows, located nearby, were not enough for the children's room. The child will soon have to go to school, the space for study and classes should be even and well lit. As a result, we revised our plans and made a room for a bedroom and an office there - the bed will be located in the darkest part of the attic, and the workplace will be in the illuminated area. In the side niches we placed a small dressing room and a shower room.
