Before you start making a homemade motor for a boat, you need to decide on the choice of base from which the engine and other important parts for assembly will be taken. On a gasoline mower, it has a large number of revolutions due to low torque. For boating, the exact opposite is needed. However, this is easily fixed. But this requires tools (everyone has them) and drawings.

Manufacturing process

Creating an engine for a boat based on the above materials can take place in different ways. Either all the main components that must be present are bought, or they are made on their own (does not cause difficulty) using improvised materials

Calculations must be made, according to which it is then necessary to draw up a drawing of the screw. It is done on the basis of many parameters, the main ones are the size and weight of the boat.

It is easier and better to make a motor if you choose a lawn mower model that has a straight shaft. Otherwise, it will take a lot of effort and expense to convert a curved bar into a straight one.

If the screw is made by hand on the basis of calculations and drawings, then the edges must be sharpened well (almost at an acute angle). The propeller blades are usually made bent by about 10 mm. Since the material for manufacturing is still the same duralumin, in the case of poor screw performance, you can safely bend it, since the material is very elastic.

The screw is mounted in place of the trimmer head, which is removed when disassembling the mower. Be sure to use a nozzle in the form of a ring, as it is possible that the blades at high speeds can damage or even tear the material of the boat (if it is rubber). Adapters that allow you to connect the main motor shaft to the propeller can be purchased online. They are very cheap.

A rope starter can also be used from a lawn mower. However, if they are uncomfortable to start, you can use a speed bike from an old bike. After the entire assembly, it is enough to fix the resulting structure on the boat itself with a clamp.

Quick assembly of a boat motor using a chainsaw

Using a chainsaw engine to make a boat motor is a very effective solution. First, at the stage of its disassembly, you need to pull out the tire and the pump that supplies oil to the chain, the lever that allows you to adjust the speed and the gas tank (not suitable due to the design of the motor).

Using textolite material, it is necessary to make an attachment point for the main part of the engine, in which the starter and the entire clutch mechanism will be located, to another part of the engine (this design will make the engine work most efficiently).

In the lowest part of the entire structure, it is necessary to insert a steel sleeve by pressing, which will be attached to the deadwood. Deadwood will be made from an inflatable paddle (cheap), which is made from duralumin. The clutch responsible for the clutch must be connected through a special shaft to the gearbox.

The gearbox can be made from the constituent parts of the grinding machine. It is filled with oil used to lubricate the car's transmission. The structure is still fastened with a clamp or vice. The steering wheel that performs maneuvers can be made from a duralumin pipe (the rest of the oar).

For the gas handle, as in the case of a trimmer, a speed bike from a bicycle can act. The screw, as the main part of the motor, can be made in the same way as in the case of a trimmer, using duralumin. In this case, the calculations carried out to determine the size of the screw remain the same.

A water jet outboard motor is a unit that sets the watercraft in motion by the jet force of the water flow created by it.

The principle of operation of the water jet is that the water sucked in by the impeller through the intake grate passes under pressure in the narrow body of the propulsor and, leaving through the narrow nozzle, creates a jet stream that propels the boat.

Such a motor consists of the following parts:

  • Air-cooled or water-cooled four-stroke gasoline engine with 1 to 4 cylinders. Engine power on jet engines ranges from 2.0–2.5 hp. on budget models up to 100–150 hp on premium engines.
  • Controls - tiller with throttle. Used to change the speed and direction of the boat. In premium models, there is no tiller, and the motor is controlled remotely using a remote control specially located next to the angler.
  • Deadwood (leg) - a casing located between the propulsor and the engine with a shaft enclosed inside it, transmitting rotational movements from the engine to the propulsion impeller. Also on the deadwood there is a clamp (clamp) for mounting the motor on the transom of the boat.
  • The mover is the working part of the jet motor, which includes a body with a water intake grate and a nozzle located at different ends. An impeller located inside the propulsion body creates a jet stream of water - a propeller located vertically or at a slight angle, driven by a deadwood shaft. When the engine is running, it sucks water through the intake hole and when it passes through the tunnel inside the body, it accelerates the flow to high speed, eventually throwing it out through the nozzle. Thus, the jet stream of water obtained during the operation of the impeller moves the boat forward.

Advantages and disadvantages

This type of motor has both advantages and disadvantages.

The benefits include:

  • Ability to quickly maneuver, turn and turn around
  • The ability to overcome shallow waters, overgrown with grass and snarled sections of reservoirs.
  • Safety - the impeller is located inside the propulsion body and cannot damage a swimmer or spearfisher who is near the boat in the water.
  • The stability of the watercraft - due to the constant injection of water by the propeller, the boat, as it were, sticks to the surface of the reservoir, thanks to which it withstands sharp turns even at high speed.

In addition, this design of the water jet avoids the winding of algae and grass on the impeller, its damage by branches and snags.

The disadvantages of this kind of motors include the risk of damage to the propulsion body with frequent movement in shallow and cluttered areas, reduced efficiency at high speeds, high cost and expensive repairs of the unit in specialized workshops and service centers.

Application

Water cannons are used by fishermen and lovers of river walks in areas with medium and shallow depths and a large amount of grass, snags, stones. Thanks to the use of a closed screw in the design and a water intake hole protected by a grate, it is protected from jamming when large branches, stones and grass get inside. Small grass and algae that get inside the propulsor along with the flow of water through the water intake grate are crushed by the impeller and do not affect the operation of the motor.

When properly positioned, the plane of the intake grate should be slightly above the level of the bottom of the boat. Jet nozzles

Homemade motors for boats based on lawn mowers have a built-in tank, shaft and gearbox. You can look for a special conversion kit, which will have a propeller and a stainless steel drive, as well as a set of adapters to the trimmer shaft. Often there are kits with a clamp for installation on a transom, so there will be no problems with fastening to a watercraft. If you act according to the attached instructions, then the outboard motor from the lawn mower can be done in 20-30 minutes.

More skills will be needed from the angler if he decides to radically change the design of the trimmer. In this case, there is a huge scope for imagination and ingenuity. One option involves the manufacture of a vertical leg.

You can cut the screw with a grinder and a chisel. The edges must be filed. Putting the plate on a flat surface, bend both blades to a height of 1 cm.

Manufacture of mounting and installation on the boat
