Instagram was like an atomic bomb.”
We started together - me and my partner from Germany. I immediately took my wife as my assistant (now she is a creative director) to help me understand female psychology. It was a background, parallel project, and at first we did not believe in it too much: the turnover was not serious.
There were no borrowed funds. Although we were looking for an investor until last year, it turned out that half of the business had to be given away for a decent amount. We counted on the European market - I did not believe in the Russian one. Why? Our people are not ready to pay big money for children's products. And in the first months it was like that: in Germany we sold 30-40 beds per month, and in Russia - 4-5.
Everything went to the fact that we would completely switch to Europe, but then it happened to us Instagram. Everything changed at once, it was the explosion of an atomic bomb. We were noticed, orders went in, and I realized that we can develop here without leaving anywhere. It is clear that it would be cheaper to launch immediately in Europe, but I live in St. Petersburg, I wanted to stay. We sold the first large batch, earned 2 million rubles - things went well.
ComfortBaby currently has over 84,000 followers on Instagram.
Invested in production together with the Polish side 150,000 euros. Now the main facilities are located in Poland and St. Petersburg. When they decided to produce additional products - not only cribs - they transported equipment from a garment factory from Cheboksary to St. Petersburg. In Moscow and Belarus there is a little outsourcing, in Germany - a lot.
Why choose Poland? This is the best country for everyone involved in the production of wooden products: in terms of materials, in terms of personnel - everything is excellent there. In Russia it is very difficult to make a person work well for average money.
Probably, we could find one or two more production sites in Poland or Russia to play it safe and lay a good foundation for growth. Then we would have avoided many problems and costs, and completed orders faster. By and large, we underestimated our product.
“The mechanism of motion sickness was knocked out of us by clients”
In 2009, I bought a radius cabinet for a sky-high price ($1,700), and a couple of years later, when my son was born, a crib for 6,000 rubles, which broke on the very first night. The further, the more I was disappointed in domestic products, besides, the idea of \u200b\u200bcombining several things into one did not leave me.
We understood that the first product should be the driving force of the business, the locomotive of sales. We researched the market, assessed the competition: there were practically no transforming cribs with rounded corners in Europe. There were only 3-4 brands. Then we tried to make something of our own - the original shape, with other sizes and other colors. In general, release a product of a different tone. First, this was a "3 in 1" model, then "4 in 1". Now "6 in 1", but it is already obvious that "9 in 1" is not far off.
The most expensive to manufacture are semi-circular bed frames. To bend the tree correctly and accurately, a heat press and almost jewelry work are required. You need your own technology, experience, time and, as a result, more money, but the quality is better than that of veneer and glued wood. Moreover, all the technical details were already known to our Polish partners, there was equipment. In production, we use solid beech, willow, cotton, satin, bamboo, silk. From fillers - synthetic winterizer, for mattresses - holkon, holofiber.
How did the motion sickness mechanism come about? He was literally knocked out of us by our clients, expectant mothers. And we came up with. "Pendulums" were, but not for transforming beds, not for models of different sizes. We are the first to release swing cribs that can "grow" with the child. This is a joint development of domestic and foreign design laboratories - we essentially combined two different projects into one. It turned out to be a product that absolutely everyone likes, because it has maximum functionality - the crib can be adjusted for every age and the motion sickness process can be regulated.
1.5 million rubles were invested in the development of the “pendulum bed”, the work was carried out for 8 months, 100 products were made for the first batch.
The best-selling Smart Grow 6 in 1 crib, changing table, mattress and mattress covers, designer linen set, side cribs, sheets. In Europe, the main hit is the snow-white Smart Grow “6 in 1” with 3 in 1 mattresses. In Russia, it’s always with a pendulum, they take less without it. In textiles, the margin is three times more than in the production of cribs. You won’t earn much on transformers in Russia due to the large import component (35% of the price goes to cover the duty). In Europe, our Smart Grows cost less, but the margin there is higher.
“We will build a federal dealer network”
We are a manufacturer and seller, so the client can buy any product first hand - on our website or from an authorized dealer. Now we want to build a federal dealer network - something in between regional offices and franchisee partners. This will be one franchise per region. The partner ensures the search and equipment of the warehouse, store, bears all the costs, and we, for our part, guarantee regular deliveries and stable profits.
In fact, we will be just suppliers. Franchise prices will vary. Within 1 million rubles, but there is a second option - a franchise for an existing business, without an entrance fee. In the first option, our responsibility is greater, but it is also possible.
The launch of the ComfortBaby project cost 1 million rubles. Now the company's annual turnover is 100 million rubles.
I think that cities where we do not have large wholesalers will respond: megacities of Siberia and the Far East. If you look at the ComfortBaby shipment map, then this is mainly the European part: Moscow, Tver, Saratov, Vladimir. They provide about 70% of orders, Siberia and the Far East - 15% each. In the CIS, they are well represented in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus.
In Russia, the issue of buying a crib and, in general, everything for a child is decided by a woman, a mother, and in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, everyone must first “ask her husband”, consult ( smiling). But in general, there is not much difference in business.

Our audience is modern mothers aged 20-35 who actively use the Internet and gadgets, follow fashion and novelties. Businesswoman, housewife - in different ways. Once a girl came to the office in a Rolls-Royce Phantom - for a crib at the price of 20,000 rubles. I remember that after that we even wanted to do a joint project with Swarovski, because such an audience is ready to pay 150,000 and 200,000 rubles for cribs. Now everything is much simpler: I looked through several Instagram feeds of manufacturers and it is already possible to draw the first conclusions, it is already clear what you want to buy.
Previously, without exception, all customers wrote reviews: how they first chose a crib, then they waited for it, then they collected it, and now they can tell what their impressions are. It was a whole event.
"We warmed up this market"
We aim for the Stokke level ( Norwegian manufacturer of oval cribs). Let's go after him. In some ways, by the way, even more successful - in marketing, for example. We warmed up this market better. After we entered the market, their sales increased significantly. We are often asked to develop a similar mechanism for Stokke, but we refuse. They can invent their own system, but the trick is that our mechanism is suitable for all models. You see, the mechanism is still long and complicated, and most importantly, there are no guarantees that you will assemble something really interesting.
There is a SleepWell company in St. Petersburg - this is a secondary brand of the Fealta furniture factory, which makes everything in a row. They produce products similar to ours. But, in my opinion, they just take advantage of the fact that when we don’t have an item in stock and we can’t quickly fulfill a customer’s order, they quietly offer theirs to customers. When we have stock again, they stop selling.
And then there's Ellipse Bed, good guys. We can say we are friends. They showed up around the same time as us, maybe a month later. At the same time, they have their own "pendulum", their own technology, other dimensions, configuration. These are not those who copied us one to one and passed off as their own, but there are enough of them.
We have a "Our Star Clients" section where celebrities such as Vladimir Presnyakov, Pavel Volya, Anfisa Chekhova and Olga Buzova recommend cribs and post personal photos. The stars were reached through Instagram. Mostly pregnant celebrities were found by my wife.
