Floorboards or laminate, which is better? What to choose: parquet board or laminate. An important fact is that the tree does not fade or fade over the years, but, on the contrary, becomes more beautiful. In this case, minor mechanical damage

The floor experiences very heavy loads, for this reason the coating has to be replaced quite quickly. Today, the construction market offers a huge range of finishing materials for floors. The most popular are laminate and parquet. Both materials have many positive qualities. Parquet is environmentally friendly, reliable and looks expensive, while laminate is relatively inexpensive and does not require special care. When planning to change the floor covering, you need to thoroughly study all the main characteristics of the materials presented.

Before choosing a floor covering, you should familiarize yourself with its main characteristics. Laminate flooring is very similar in appearance to parquet, but is completely different in its parameters. Today, manufacturers produce laminate boards with a variety of patterns. Laminate boards are inherently a multilayer material, where each layer plays its own role.

If you take a cross-section of the board, you will notice the following components:

  1. The bottom layer is called stabilizing. Its function is to increase the rigidity of the material, and it also performs protective functions. Many manufacturers quite often place a substrate under this layer, which serves as sound insulation.
  2. The second layer is called the load-bearing layer. This layer is the most important in the entire structure. The ability of the material not to allow water to pass through depends on it. Thermal insulation and sound insulation properties depend on the quality of this layer. The middle layer is made of HDF dense wood fiber board. Also in this part of the laminate there is a connecting lock.
  3. Next comes the decorative paper layer, which is responsible for the pattern of the floor covering.
  4. The topmost layer is called protective. It protects the coating from rapid abrasion, fading and deformation. This layer is made of resin based on acrylic and melamine. The thickness of the layer determines the class of the laminate.

Locks on the laminate allow you to speed up the assembly process. Also, thanks to this system, the laminate can be easily dismantled if necessary without damaging the coating. The lock system is divided into two types: Click and Lock.

The first type of lock is suitable for people who have no experience working with laminate flooring.

The lock works on the principle of joining two boards at an angle of 45°. The locks snap in place without much effort. The second type of connection is also simple and economical. The principle of its operation is to insert a tenon protruding on the adjacent board into an existing groove. To increase the strength of the connection, the tenon is equipped with special combs, with the help of which the lock is firmly locked.

Laminate coating is divided into classes that determine the main purpose of the coating.:

  • 21-23 is suitable for use only in residential areas as it has low strength;
  • 31 is intended for use in domestic premises;
  • Class 32 can be used in rooms with increased load;
  • 33 is intended for finishing the floors of public and office premises with high traffic;
  • 34 has increased strength.

Depending on these parameters, the choice is made.

What is parquet flooring

Parquet boards are in good demand today due to their technical characteristics. This type of flooring is a material that can be panel, piece or typesetting.

There are several types of parquet on the market.:

  • Natural;
  • Massive board.

Parquet is made from different types of wood. Manufacturers mainly use oak, maple, merbau, beech, cherry, bamboo, ash and walnut.

The types of parquet differ in:

  1. Block parquet is wooden planks with a small width, where the end and side edges are equipped with grooves and tenons for easy assembly. Piece coating requires special skills when installing.
  2. Panel parquet is a square multi-layer structure, which includes a coniferous backing and glued strips made of valuable wood.
  3. Solid parquet boards have an oil or gentle finish.
  4. Stacked narrow parquet consists of planks of the same width. Using this coating you can create a variety of designs. The bar is wide enough.

Also, types of parquet differ from each other in color and texture.

Features of laminated parquet boards

In other words, it is an engineered board that looks like parquet with a special design and structure. The base of this material is plywood, and the top layer is veneer. Laminated parquet boards are easy to install without adhesive. This floor covering will last for many years. Before choosing one or another material, it would be a good idea to compare their positive and negative properties and weigh the pros and cons.

Advantages of laminate flooring:

  • Does not attract dust;
  • High strength;
  • Resistant to mechanical damage;
  • Resistant to ultraviolet rays;
  • Suitable for installation of heated floors;
  • Simple rules for care and use.

The disadvantages of laminated flooring include the fact that it cannot be used in rooms with high humidity, without the use of a substrate, noise insulation is reduced, laminate flooring cannot be repaired, and in appearance the laminate does not resemble natural wood flooring.

Which is better: parquet board or laminate

Unlike laminate, parquet has a higher cost due to the following characteristics: parquet protects well from the penetration of extraneous noise, does not attract dust, and the varnish with which parquet boards are coated is completely harmless. This material can be repaired many times; in appearance, parquet looks expensive and sophisticated.

The disadvantages include the following qualities::

  • Parquet does not tolerate moisture;
  • The top coating of parquet tends to wear out quickly;
  • The longevity of parquet directly depends on the correct temperature control in the room.

In order to choose which coating is best suited for the floor, you need to compare all the parameters and characteristics: the ability to withstand loads and shocks, withstand temperature fluctuations, appearance, special care conditions, and the cost of the coating. If the room is made in a classic style, then a parquet model is best suited for it.

It will look perfect alongside a marble fireplace, elegant gilding and decorative stucco, in harmony with classic paintings on the walls and antique furnishings.

If the apartment is inlaid in one of the modern trends (modern, high-tech, eco-style), then a laminated floor is appropriate.

What is the difference between laminate and parquet boards (video)

To summarize, it can be noted that parquet compares favorably with laminate for the reason that an aged parquet board can be repaired, but a laminated floor panel cannot be repaired. But laminate is much cheaper than parquet. Having studied all the positive properties and main characteristics, you can accurately choose the appropriate coating. When choosing between laminate and parquet, you need to take into account all the nuances of subsequent operation.

Laminate flooring first appeared in the 1980s in Europe as a cheap alternative to expensive parquet. Externally, a high-quality laminate conveys the pattern, color and structure of natural materials, while possessing more advanced technical characteristics - increased performance and wear-resistant properties. The price for this type of flooring is much lower than for parquet, parquet and wooden (floor) boards.

Modern laminates are very diverse - the material can imitate natural wood, tile, stone and marble, be textured and embossed, as well as silky-glossy or waxed, reminiscent of an aged or country surface.

But do not forget that even the highest quality laminate is an artificial material, so despite all its beauty, it does not have the properties of wood (or stone).

In any case, the quality of such products used in residential premises must be high - laminate is often used not only in living rooms, corridors and kitchens, but also in the bedroom or children's room.

Depending on the characteristics of each room, a laminate of a certain class is selected - the higher it is, the lower the degree of abrasion and the less susceptible it is to mechanical damage.

Batten

Not so long ago in our country it was believed that floorboards (sometimes called solid wood) were an attribute of country houses, camp sites, and gyms. The wear resistance of a floorboard floor primarily depends on the hardness of the wood from which it is made. Today, plank floors are made not only from pine, as in the past, but also from traditional hardwoods and exotic woods.

The requirements for the quality of the floorboard, no matter what type of wood it is made from, are very high - this allows it to be used in residential interiors. This coating tolerates changes in humidity and temperature well and is resistant to mechanical damage.

Typically, solid wood with a thickness of 15-20 mm is used to produce floorboards, although in some cases the thickness of the boards can reach 50 mm.

The resistance of wood of different species to mechanical loads varies greatly, so wood species with medium resistance are suitable for living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens, and wood species with low resistance are suitable for a bedroom or office.

A big plus of solid floorboards is the variety of sizes, allowing you to take into account the configuration of the room and its design. For example, long solid boards visually reduce the size of the room, while shorter planks make the room visually more spacious. Wide boards will give the room solidity and respectability, while narrow boards will give intimacy and a certain privacy.

Unlike their predecessors, modern solid boards are equipped with special fasteners, with which you can achieve a tighter joint. The gap between the massive boards is almost invisible.

A wooden floor will look like a single whole, and if installed properly, it will last as long as parquet. Installation of such a covering will require slightly less time than parquet. And after laying the boards, they must be treated in the same way as parquet.

Parquet board

There is also a flooring option such as parquet boards. Unlike a floorboard made from a single piece of wood, a parquet board is glued together from several layers (two or more often three). Accordingly, parquet boards are cheaper than flooring and the question often arises: what is better – floorboards or parquet boards, laminate or parquet boards?

In the first case, it’s a matter of money - if you can afford solid wood on the floor in your house, feel free to choose this option. If after 20-30 years you are ready to change the floor or are running out of finances, choose parquet boards. Well, if money (more precisely, saving it) plays a key role, your choice is laminate!

The decorative floor covering must meet such criteria as high wear resistance, reliability, long service life and ease of use. When choosing between modern products - laminate and parquet boards - weigh the pros and cons.

Laminate parquet belongs to the category of multi-layer thin floor coverings. The slats consist of four layers (from top to bottom):

Top protective or overlay

It is a high-strength transparent film made of rigid polymer. Using a variety of processing technologies, factories produce laminate with a smooth or embossed overlay. The degree of gloss also varies: mirror, semi-gloss, semi-matte and matte surface.

Decorative paper

This layer is a sheet with wood, stone, marble, textile and other designs printed on it. The high-precision printing method used allows us to achieve a perfect imitation of texture, which is most often emphasized by the so-called register embossing.

Carrier board

The base of the laminate is high-density HDF board. It is a durable sheet of compressed fine chips mixed with thermosetting resins. The thickness depends on the class and category and varies between 6-14 mm.

Stabilization layer
Consists of paper impregnated with melamine resins. Its purpose is to protect the lower part of the planks from moisture, as well as to prevent deformation processes.

There is an opinion that the laminate locks should also be separated into a separate element. There is one significant objection - the “tenon and groove” is an integral part of the load-bearing slab and such a division is inappropriate.

Laminate flooring is laid in a floating manner. The products are available with a Click or Lock connection system, which greatly facilitates the assembly process.

To ensure water resistance of the flooring material, some manufacturers apply wax protection or polymer impregnation to the locking part. For use in wet areas, special sealing compounds or rubber seals are added.

Let's summarize: laminate has many advantages, but there are probably also disadvantages. For clarity, let's collect all the data into a single table.

Advantages Flaws
Presentable appearance. Tactilely cold, unpleasant to walk barefoot in winter
A huge variety of decors and shades. Not water resistant
Can be used in residential, commercial and public spaces. Requires protective measures: pads on furniture legs, dirt-proof mats, etc.
Quick installation. Factory defects cannot be corrected
Easy to use and maintain. Large amount of waste
Resistant to fading, staining, and animal claws. Careful preparation of the base is required before installation
Long service life - 7-30 years. May accumulate static electricity
Low water absorption coefficient (up to 9% for European brands, no more than 12% for Russian flooring, 15-18% for Chinese products). Paul belongs to the “voiced” category. When installing on floor slabs, sound and sound insulation is required
Maintainability Lack of standardized sizes
Possibility of use on water floor heating systems. Hand and foot prints remain on laminate flooring with a glossy surface.
Damaged strips can be quickly replaced The certification systems of the Russian Federation and the EU do not coincide
Cost – from 300 rub./m2 Many fakes and low-quality products from East Asian countries

Features of parquet boards

An analogue of classic solid parquet, as well as laminate, refers to multi-layer floor coverings. Structurally consists of:

Protective topcoat

To create a wear-resistant and stain-resistant surface film, the parquet board is coated with varnish, a mixture of natural oils, wax compositions or an oil-wax mix composition.

If the varnish creates a fairly strong and durable coating, then the last three types of protective agents must be renewed every 2-3 years.

Valuable wood veneer

A thin cut of durable wood from oak, beech, ash and other species is classified as a decorative part. The layer can be solid (single-strip) or prefabricated (two- and three-strip). Thickness – from 3.5 to 6 mm.

Surface shades: natural, dark and light. Toning agents are used for staining, and bleaching agents are used for lightening. The texture is smooth and structured. The latter means that to create volume and effectiveness, special processing techniques are used: brushing, thermal smoking, antique and much more.

Supporting base

The board is formed from coniferous wood. For premium products, technical oak is used. The fibers of this layer are located transversely to the upper layer, which ensures the stability of the structure. Thickness – 6-9 mm.

Stabilization layer
Cut from solid or spliced pine. The cross-section does not exceed 1-3 mm, the main function is to compensate for the stress of the layers and ensure the stability of the geometric dimensions of the lamellas.

Connecting locks of the Click (snap) and Lock (groove-joint) formats are formed on the supporting base. Laying is done in several ways:

  • "Floating";
  • Glue;
  • Fastening. Studs, screws and even clamps can be used as fixing elements.

In any case, the surface of the assembled floor will be flat and smooth, so sanding and varnishing are not required.

Advantages Flaws
Aesthetic appearance High levels of humidity in the room and contact with water are unacceptable
Suitable for apartments, houses, offices During installation, waste up to 1.5 m2 is generated
Operational life – 15-20 years A large number of fakes
Acceptable installation time Before laying, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work on the base
Pleasant, warm to the touch surface A set of care products is required
Shades change over time. Depending on the type of wood they darken or turn yellow Wax and oil coatings are not resistant to shock loads, are quickly pressed through, and are scratched.
Can be used in combination with a water floor heating system Special equipment is required for restoration work
Maintainability and complete restoration by grinding without replacing planks and bulkheads – 2-6 times. Wax or oil coating must be renewed periodically
Cost – from 1200 rub./m2

Laminate or parquet flooring

A unique comparative analysis of floor finishing materials according to the main criteria will help determine which decorative coating to choose:

Wear resistance

The most durable protection for the surface of a parquet board is polyurethane or urethane-alkyd varnish. Forms a water- and abrasion-resistant film. The laminate overlay boasts similar characteristics. Both types are approved for use in commercial, retail and public buildings.

In contrast to the varnish layer, oil and wax do not differ in similar qualities. They are absorbed into the wood, seal the pores, that is, protect against the harmful effects of water, and allow you to enjoy a warm, lively surface. There is an opinion that this is the most environmentally friendly coating for residential and office premises. However, the top layer is not protected from scratches, chips, dents and other defects. Therefore, when purchasing a parquet board that has been oiled or waxed, it would be a good idea to purchase a repair kit in advance.

Appearance

Visually, high-quality laminate is practically indistinguishable from parquet boards. And the presence of a chamfer and structural embossing enhances this similarity. In addition, the product line of laminated parquet is significantly wider; the choice is not just large - it is enormous.

Operating Parameters

High-quality parquet boards or laminates last at least 10 years; periodic dry cleaning is recommended, less often wet cleaning. Stains are removed with special compounds, minor defects are restored with furniture wax or retouching agents (markers, correctors).

Parquet boards have a significant advantage - its surface can be restored by sanding. This will not work with laminate - you will have to replace damaged areas, which is accompanied by certain difficulties. After all, every year the collections are updated, the shapes of the locks are improved. Therefore, you won’t be able to buy exactly the same design in 2-3 years - you will have to select something similar in thickness, color, texture. Accordingly, in such a category as practicality, parquet boards win.

4. Cost
What to choose if you have a limited budget? Of course, laminate. A multilayer array, even an economy class one, costs 3-4 times more.

To summarize: laminate flooring is a coating in the mid-price segment, quite durable, presentable and resistant to various damages. Parquet boards are an elite, but capricious finish that requires constant care and attention. But it will delight you with the warmth and beauty of natural wood for years.

Parquet board or laminate, which is better?

How is parquet board different from laminate? What to choose: parquet boards or laminate? Almost everyone, faced with such a choice for the first time, thinks that laminate is a short-lived, cheap imitation of parquet, that it is easily scratched, dents remain on it, and the edge at the joints swells very quickly after any interaction with water. In contrast, there is an opinion that it is much more durable and harder, can be restored, and several layers of varnish protect well from scratches and dents.

This opinion is quite understandable; it is formed under the influence of various factors.

Many people have seen scratched laminate flooring with swollen, frayed edges somewhere in an office, cafe or store, or heard reviews from acquaintances or friends that they bought class 32 laminate flooring, but after a month it was full of cracks and with bent edges. And finally, it seems quite logical that parquet boards are more expensive than laminate flooring, because their technical characteristics are better.

But in reality everything is different.

Your acquaintances or friends most likely bought laminate not 32 classes, but on the packaging of which the manufacturer wrote a lie. The fact is that if the manufacturer is not a member of the Association of European Manufacturers of Laminate Flooring, he can indicate on his packaging any class he wants and does not bear any responsibility for it.

Laminate wear resistance classes are an association standardEPLF.

In fact, today our market is 90% flooded with Russian and Chinese products, which are cheap laminated MDF boards. This type of coating is simply not suitable for flooring, although it is often sold quite expensively.

What is the difference between laminate and parquet boards?

In fact, compared to laminate, parquet boards are much easier to scratch, they are more capricious and less durable. If you have a medium or large dog, the parquet board will quickly become unusable, since claw marks remain on the parquet board with any number of layers of varnish. Not a single dog, even the largest one, can leave scratches on laminate flooring. If we consider moisture resistance, then laminate is much less afraid of dry rooms or high humidity. This fact can be observed in winter, when the air in the apartment is very dry. At this time of year, the parquet board dries out and cracks appear, but the laminate will not have them.

The fact is that laminate was originally developed to imitate parquet, but at the same time it was planned to significantly improve its technical characteristics compared to wooden floor coverings. That is why the first types of laminate were much more expensive than parquet boards. And only then, thanks to the development of technology, it was possible to reduce the cost of production. That’s when cheap laminate class 21 appeared, which contributed to the formation of a negative opinion about the low technical characteristics of the laminate.

Today, the market mainly offers laminate of 31, 32, 33 and 34 classes. In terms of technical characteristics, such a laminate significantly surpasses parquet boards, since, unlike it, it is based on an HDF board (high-density fiberboard). HDF board, compared to a regular board, expands more evenly and much less, so there is no formation of cracks. Also, thanks to the melamine protective film with the addition of corundum, it is much more difficult to leave scratches on the laminate.

Why is parquet board better than laminate?

It would seem that laminate is easier and cheaper to install; it has higher strength and wear resistance than parquet boards. He is less afraid of water and dry rooms with low air humidity.

Then why does parquet board cost more? Why is parquet board better than laminate?

The answer is actually simple.

Why is a copy of a painting by Rubens or another famous artist never more expensive than the original? Why does an Arabian horse, which is inferior in technical parameters to most cars, cost significantly more than them?

Yes, because a fake is always a fake, and comparing an Arabian horse to a car is blasphemy.

How is parquet board different from laminate? Because the parquet board is a natural product, a real wood pattern. And a parquet board under oil gives the feeling of incomparable natural wood.

Myths about laminate and parquet boards

There are opinions that:

- laminate is less environmentally friendly than parquet boards.

It is not true. European laminate flooring for the home, like parquet boards, belongs to the E1 environmental class. You may be surprised, but solid boards, once laid, are, in most cases, a very unhealthy floor covering. And all because the massive board is joined with toxic two-component glue and coated with an equally toxic varnish. There are, of course, safe adhesives and varnishes, but they are very expensive, and when choosing, many are guided by the rule: the better the adhesive and the less it costs, the better. But such varnishes and glues are very harmful to our health.

- laminate is echoing, but parquet boards are not.

This is also not true. It all depends on what kind of underlay you use and how smooth the floor is. You can put laminate on a perfectly smooth floor and a cork backing, and a parquet board on an uneven floor and a cheap polyethylene backing. After this, the laminate will be quieter than parquet boards.

The main problem with the floor design is that it resembles a drum. Only by making maximum contact with the sound absorber or thickening the floor can the noise be reduced. For example, you can now knock on the table with your knuckles, and then on its end. You will hear that the sound is much quieter when you tap on the end.

Therefore, the only way to significantly reduce the noise is to glue the parquet board to the base of the floor, which in itself is very expensive, and makes it pointless to purchase a parquet board with a lock.

- parquet boards can be restored, but laminate flooring cannot.

This is true, but in fact, it is a marketing ploy, since it is a very rare master who undertakes to restore a parquet board if it is not glued to the floor. A floating floor is too problematic to sand, since the board will sag by half a millimeter at the locking joints during sanding, which leads to “waves” after the work is completed. Or you will need to sand it manually, which is significantly more expensive. You also need to take into account the fact that during the sanding process all paint and brushing will be removed from the parquet board. After which it will be ironed like an ordinary cheap board. It is also impossible to qualitatively restore a three-strip parquet board after use for more than 5 years, due to the peeling of the lamellas. It will not be possible to glue them back like a new parquet board. As a result, the meaning of restoration is completely lost, since it is better to buy a new parquet board, if only because it will be cheaper. By the way, the second and very significant factor is that during the restoration you will need to remove all the furniture from the room, and also wait several days for the varnish to dry.
